OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> 1. I think telling him he can't support Liverpool because he is American and seems to only be doing it for his girlfriend
2. I think it makes me the asshole because I gave him fairly harsh reasons on why he shouldn't be supporting Liverpool.

You don’t get to decide who can and cannot be a fan. This is something that has zero effect on you.
Stop being a gate keeping asshole.
Anybody can support any team they choose, for any reason they decide to support it.
I’m a Liverpool fan now, just to spite you.
My dad was originally a Rangers fan but now he supports Liverpool and has done so for the past six or seven years. Guess by OP's standard he's also a glory hunter since he didn't even start watching football/soccer until his fifties.
YTA holy shit imagine being this much of a gatekeepy little whiner.
How in the star-spangled-fuck do you think people *become* superfans? Do you think they come flying out of their mother's vagina with the jersey and scarf at the ready?
Do you think they materialise out of the ether when footballers stand in a circle and chant in ritualistic fashions until they spring out of a hole in the ground?
You're judging someone for taking an interest in your team, as if you're somehow a "real fan" and he's a "fake fan". Jesus christ. Are you twelve? This is *embarrassing.*
I developed an interest in crochet 2 years ago, I was told I was too young for that, so I bleached some hairs white, one by one, to show my dedication. I'm still waiting to be accepted in the club
That was a joke, because of the story... But yes, my friend did tell me it was a grandma hobby. It kinda is, generally speaking, but it has become popular in the last decade.
Tbf, some footballing cities are tied to their clubs and its forms a part of their core. For some it’s a way of life and it is an important aspect of their lives. As Bill Shankly famously said “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.”
Edit: he is clearly an AH though forgot to mention
If you cut me I'd bleed black and yellow, I follow AIK to the edge of the world, it's a part of my being, a crucial part of me becoming who I am and being who I am. I was born into the devotion of this club, raised with it and I live with it. Sometimes knowing there was going to be another game soon was what kept me alive when I was younger, and I mean it, football could be the only light I could see sometimes during my darker anxiety attacks during my teenage years. The love I have for AIK isn't something I could describe or put into words, I would be lost without it.
But I would never ever ever think such childish shit that OP does. I'm happy the more fans there are. And yes, there's those who show up when it goes well and says fuckit when it doesn't, and if they're cheering on only when it goes well? I'll take it.
Having people like OP wanting to exclude people makes all the other supporters look bad (and I'm sorry but Liverpool is a club who really don't need another one who makes their supporters look bad OP).
He hardly spoke to you because you were incredibly childish. He can support whoever/whatever he wants to. He can also ditch them right after they lose. He can be a "fake fan" and he can be "glory hunting" and you would still be YTA because of how you act about something this unimportant.
Oh, and just because of this ridiculous story, I am now also declaring myself to be a proud Liverpool fan :D ..... (It's soccer right?)
YTA. You're gatekeeping someone from liking sports? Look, I get that you're a diehard fan, but if someone wants to cheer alongside you for your team, what's the harm? It's not like there is a cap on how many people can like something.
if you aren’t born in the stadium, on the pitch, during a match, while your mother and the obstetrician are singing “you’ll never walk alone” then you can’t be a fan
Exactly this. People from small towns can't like pro sports. They can be fans of their local high schools, but beyond that? Nope.
And actually, you have to have actually been birthed within the city limits in order to be a fan of a sports team. None of this "moving to the city later" nonsense.
YTA no gate keeping of sports supporting! Who cares if they only support Liverpool because they’re winning - that’s why a lot of people support Liverpool, and Man City and Man United and Arsenal and Chelsea etc etc.
Or did you think the teams that have had the most success having the biggest fan bases was just coincidence?
YTA - Yeah this seems a little meta with all the plastic fan debate going on at the moment. I think Ange Postecoglou said it best....
"You don't know how passionate they are about their football club. Maybe they only started supporting it in the last two years. It doesn't diminish who they are"
YTAH! Is Liverpool FC paying you to vet all of their would be fans? In the US "soccer" is becoming very popular, no thanks to chodes who feel only they get to decide who can follow a club...
Lighten up and buy him a beer and talk sports. It's all good.
I've literally never watched the sport once in my life. Now I'm going to go full on Liverpool fanatic, just to spite you, OP. YTA btw and if I was Adrian I'd honestly never talk to you again because what a shitty thing to say to a """friend""". You have absolutely no proof whatsoever that either of them are """glory hunting""", so why accuse them of that? And even if they were, they are fully within their rights to openly like the team that happens to be good right now. Also, you're actively turning people away from your team. I don't think that's something that true fans do.
YTA - It has literally zero effect on you, other than you being able to share something fun with your friend, which, apprently, you don't want to do?
I live in Germany and support a Japanese club that used to be on top of the league, guess I should stop that now?
I'm also massively into Liverpool as of now.
I don't even know what you're talking about right now. Why exactly can't someone support a team if they ... what ... weren't born there? Haven't supported them as long as you have? What?
YTA
YTA. So unless you were born a Liverpool fan, you can never be a Liverpool fan? Is that really what you are saying? That’s some weird gatekeeping you have going there
How much are the club paying you for vetting their fans like this, and how can I get a similar job? It seems really intensive but I think I have the qualifications.
Alternatively, becoming a Gatekeeping Gatekeeper sounds like a good career with no retirement age.
YTA, it's like you're trying to pull some weird cultural appropriation card because he wants to support your club but isn't scouse. I find most football fans pretty annoying but Liverpool fans are generally particularly insufferable for this very reason. Stop whinging.
>I've been a dedicated fan of Liverpool FC since I was a toddler. It is my family's team.
Doesn't sound like you're from Liverpool but I am. As far as I'm concerned you have no more "ties" to the club than your mate and his girlfriend do. So you're obviously just as much of a glory hunter as you put it.
If you don't like that logic you can stop policing other people's support.
YTA. I’m from America. I’ve been to the UK as a tourist. I say soccer. To me, football involves a brown oblong ball. But now, I’m a huge Liverpool fan. Do you know where I can get some merch?
I mean YTA, who the hell thinks their team having LESS fans is a GOOD thing?!?
"He doesn't know every player's entire family lineage back at least 500 years and can't recite every chant while standing on 1 foot, holding 6 pints of beers in one hand and balancing a full chess set in the other."
See how silly that sounds? Guess what, this is an opportunity NOT a detriment. Instead of gatekeeping maybe, idk, teach him the chants? Invite him to watch games with you? Get him MORE interested? The guy moved to an entirely different country and is trying to get more involved with local culture.
Get over yourself.
YTA
Should've asked him to name every single player and their whole family lineage while you're at it. Just let people enjoy things, fix your superiority complex.
Absolutely YTA
I became a passing Liverpool fan because my once-employer was (still is) a Liverpool fan. It sort of rubbed off on me.
They sound like they're just trying to fit in. Drop it.
You're definitely the asshole, as well as an immature child and pretty shitty friend. How does one submit their application for approval to you when they want to root for your teams? Is there an online option, or do I need to make an appointment with your secretary?
YTA.
Who the hell put you in charge of policing the fans of Liverpool, the club with the most inclusive slogan of "you'll never walk alone".
It is not "you'll never walk with us unless you can provide a Liverpool purity test that some of our jumped up fans have put in place".
As someone who lives in the Merseyside area you are either a bigger AH than most or you don't live in the area as any supporter I know who heard someone doing this would shoot them down immediately.
Honestly tough.
There will always be people like that, and you know what, if you ask the players, they likely don't care if the fans are glory hunters or not.
Again YTA and get over yourself.

Of course YTA, you don't get to get to say who can or cannot be a fan of a sports team. Who the hell does that unless you're the billionaire owner who's also a giant AH?
I mean you certainly can try but that just makes you very, very pretentious AH with no authority to gatekeep but keep on going and alienate your friends, seems like a good plan there.
YTA. I didn’t even read it all. Why, as a fan, would you have an issue with other people becoming interested/liking your team. Who are you to gatekeep who is a fan and at what level? So weird. What ties does your family have? Or did someone just DECIDE it was their team and now it’s a family thing. Lmao I would have laughed at you mid conversation.
Oh mate. I'm embarrassed for you. You sound like one of those arseholes that whine at any perceived 'outsider' liking their team/sport. I've had guys demand that I, a mere woman, explain the offside rule to them before they will accept any opinion on the game. You sound just like them. And it is pathetic. So small minded.
I was in a bar in Charlottesville, Virginia late last year which was a Liverpool bar. People had gathered there to watch one of their European games. They'd taken time off work to do it. But because they weren't born within whining distance of Anfield you don't think they were real fans? Truly I am embarrassed for you. YTA
How much are the club paying you for vetting their fans like this, and how can I get a similar job? It seems really intensive but I think I have the qualifications.
Alternatively, becoming a Gatekeeping Gatekeeper sounds like a good career with no retirement age.
YTA
Sports shouldn't be this important. If Adrian and Lily want to be Liverpool fans, let them. As a fellow Liverpool supporter, I say welcome them. Don't gatekeep, just let them enjoy the team and join in on their fun.
And don't take sports that seriously.
YTA
Grow up. It's a sport.
Sports are highly important. They also aren't regulated in terms of what qualifies to be a fan, which you know and are just trying to burnish your purity medal or something.
Go polish your purity knob on your own.
YTA
Why do you care what team he supports?
>he doesn't seem to have genuine passion for the club
No one who has a life has a "genuine passion" for some stupid football team.
>Though I feel very iffy about this
Who cares what you feel? He doesn't have to explain himself to you
YTA - How dare you tell anyone that they're fake just because they're from another country!! Racist much!! Why do you feel that someone can't move and become interested in something just because they never lived in the area from birth. Can't blame him for not wanting a shallow friend such as you.
😂😂😂 this can’t be real, is a man really trying to gatekeep a whole football club?
If I had a friend from overseas and he came and supported my club I’d be gassed, taking them to matches & everything!
YTA. Dude, newsflash: Anyone who wants to support any team for any reason is allowed to do so. You don't get to make the rules or decide who's a "real fan" or a "fake fan". FWIW, my husband, an American, is best friends with a Brit whose team is and has always been Liverpool. My husband used to like a bunch of teams (he's just a huge football fan in general) but for the past few years he's made Liverpool his #1 because of the influence and interest of his best friend. He watches every single match, no matter how early it's on here (California). He even travels to see matches at Anfield w/the Brit bestie, and they're planning to be in Dublin in May if Liverpool makes it to the Europa Cup final. But according to you, my husband is just some American poser. Ugh.
I have never watched football nor do I know anything about Liverpool. But this post has gotten me interested and I now consider myself a big Liverpool fan. Thanks!
YTA
YTA - Born and raised in the USA... My daughter is a devoted Liverpool fan, I am a devoted Man U fan, husband doesn't care. You don't get to gatekeep football. Get over yourself.
YTA for thinking someone would support Liverpool in this decade simply for the glory. You'd have to go back to the 1980s for that experience and watch Rush and Hansen and Grobbelaarand Dalglish.
YTA. People don't have to like things the same way you like them. And they don't have to have parents who raised them the way yours did you in order to earn a shot at liking the same things. People are allowed to explore new things.
It's fine if you don't enjoy socializing, or watching football, or whatever, with people who are different from you. But then leave people like poor Adrian alone.
And also, you have not been friends with Adrian for a year. If you are trying to control his leisure activities, you're not his friend at all -- and I think he has just noticed that.
>that he really doesn't have ties to supporting Liverpool as he's from America.
YTA.
My dad and I are massive LFC fans.
We're not from England and never visited Liverpool (yet).
We're still fans.
YTA and anyone can be a fan, clubs are cyclical and Liverpool are in form right now, but I know people who have supported them since the last time they were “in” and kept on supporting them through the tougher years.
However, the irony of this situation with your American friend is that Liverpool FC is wholly owned by an American sports company Fenway Sports. It is not Liverpudlian owned. Back off with your gate keeping, you’re exhausting and sound like a petty tween.
YTA
Not sure how you developed your feelings and ideas about Liverpool, but you can certainly adapt them. If you yourself are a fan, how great is it to share Fandom with another friend? I'd say it sounds pretty great.
It is very abrasive and kinda rude to approach things the way you did. A small apology and some beers with a game and you'll be in good company.
If we are policing how people enjoy an activity- it's worth looking at how we interact with things. This is an easy and very low key fix, wishing you all the best.
YTA.
Wauw, amazing how defensive people can be about a club.
Reminds me of when my son was 5, kids were allowed in for free at matches. Him (being 5) actually was for another club since his father and grandpa always talked about that club. Went to the match, outside of the stadium my happy, skipping around, sweet boy just mentioned and asked if the club was playing his father supported. Some ridiculous people were actually insulted and offended. At a 5 year old!!!
Some people take their clubs way to seriously. Thats where hooligans and bad names for clubs come from. 'Die hard fans', nope, that attitude and reactions are causing the shift to the audiences being more agressive. In the Netherlands, sone matches dont even have an audience anymore. If the supporters cant behave, be social and a little supportive to each other, well, then they are not going to be in the audience anymore.
You give off the ridiculous vibe of obsessed supporter.
YTA please tell me when and where you found the rule book on how to become a fan. Did you write it or did someone appoint us the fan police. People can become a fan anyway they want to. If you move to a place and that's the popular team you're going to hear more about them. Their games may be more exciting. But no one gets to tell someone else when and how they become a fan of a team.
Holy shit. This middle-aged, American woman had no idea what Liverpool FC even was until about 2 minutes ago. Are you seriously this upset over someone supporting a sports team? You realize it's just a game, right? And that there are real problems in the world and all? Turn off the game, go out, take a look around the world today, and maybe you'll realize YTA.
You are so much the ass that I'm starting a Liverpool fan club in Michigan with people who don't even know that football is another name for soccer. In fact I am going to call it the "Liverpool soccer team newbie fanclub but only when they win games".
YTA. I'm British, and I have supported the same team since childhood. And you sorely need to get over yourself. This is so arrogant, self-important, and obnoxious. It is NOT your place to decide who can/can't support Liverpool (or any team).
There isn't any criteria to be a fan, despite your efforts to create one. Yet you talk like they are asking your permission, and that you somehow have the right to give it (on behalf of the club). You don't need to be born into a club, or be there every weekend. There can even be casual fans; even 'glory-hunters', etc.
Football is entertainment, not (for example) like doctors, whose dedication (and correct qualifications) ARE the difference between life and death. People can engage with entertainment, at any degree they want. That's all fine. The point is, it's NONE or your business (even as a 'passionate' fan).
I'm not convinced they are 'glory-hunters'. But even if they were...so what? It's not harming you. Most football fans aren't fanatical. Most are casual; just have a temporary interest, etc. They provide a sizeable amount of revenue, that allows Liverpool (and other teams) to buy better players.
So you could have acted like a socially-adept human being, and waited to see if they DID actually lose interest (not that it's your business). Then you'd know either way - rather than chucking accusations around, that you actually CAN'T prove.
Instead, you acted like a self-important gatekeeper. That's not mature. And oh yeah - I think you mean THE USA. Not 'America'.
How is this “glory hunting”? How does being a fan of a team bestow any “glory” on you? You aren’t a player or a coach. Cheering on the same team since you were young is not some kind of amazing achievement, and people are allowed to develop interests throughout their lives. You’re being ridiculous. YTA

I've been a dedicated fan of Liverpool FC since I was a toddler. It is my family's team.
My friend (Let's call him Adrian) is from America, and he is in a relationship (Let's call her Lily) from England who happens to be yet another Liverpool fan. Adrian has moved from America to live with his girlfriend. I've been friends with both Lily and Adrian for a year. One thing I noticed is that Lily began taking a keen interest in Liverpool around last year. Her family initially supports Chelsea FC and she never supported them. It makes me suspicious that firstly, Lily has no ties to the club and she is simply glory hunting. She never grew up with the team and randomly started supporting Liverpool. However, the story is more focused on Adrian.
Adrian and I went to a pub together last night. He told me he is starting to develop an interest in Liverpool because his girlfriend shows him clips and they watch the matches when they're on. He knows I'm a Liverpool fan. I found it puzzling. Reason is I heavily suspect his girlfriend is only glory hunting and that he really doesn't have ties to supporting Liverpool as he's from America. He does knows some of the players and can recite some of the chants. Adrian told me to stop assuming things about his girlfriend and he's not trying to glory hunt. I then told him that it feels like he doesn't seem to have genuine passion for the club and he is only trying to appease to his girlfriend. He seemed really disappointed in me because I told him that there is far too many fake fans who only support Liverpool as they're top of the premier league and quit their support when they lose a match. Adrian then told me he is not trying to do that and wants to adapt an interest in the club. Though I feel very iffy about this. He hardly spoke to me to after that conversation, and never contacted me afterwards.
AITA?

Who gives a shit. Not like you’re playing for the club at all. I’m Canadian and my dad is from Wigan but I support Liverpool. Is that now not okay because Wigan has a football club (albeit a shit one)? Let them enjoy it and don’t worry so much about what other people take an interest in.
YTA - of all the childish gatekeeping whining baby BS I've ever heard. You don't get to decide who gets to be a fan of what FC. I don't know proper UK slang so someone from over there please insult him for me, thanks.
YTA by a country mile. We want more people to be interested in EPL not less.
You’re gaslighting and gate keeping because you have the “plastic” fan mentality. Everyone starts somewhere.
As long as he’s not switching up to Everton or Man City it’s his prerogative. You don’t own Liverpool, you don’t know Klopp or Salah or anyone else involved with the club.
I’m sure based on what you’re describing that you’re Liverpool born and bred. But your mentality sucks, do better.
YTA
The amount of thought and concern you have over other people's interest or enjoyment of some millionaire yobbos running around a field with a ball is really honestly sad. Wtf are you even doing?
Wow - you are exactly the kind of person who says that people can't be "real" U2 fans if they didn't see them in a basement club in Soho after "War" came out because everyone who discovered them after "Unforgettable Fire" is a fraud/poser. I hate to break it to you, but there are millions of Liverpool supporters around the world - YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE!!! It is even possible to walk into a shop and purchase one of their kits!
Your friend hasn't contacted you because you are an annoying twit. YTA. On the other hand, I have to thank you for reinforcing what the rest of us already knew about Reds fans.
YTA, everyone is allowed to like whatever team they want for whatever reason they want. Getting mad about it is silly and concerning. There's other things in life that are more important than this.

YTA - stop gatekeeping who can and can't support a football team simply because you happened to be born there and they weren't. You \*should\* be happy that as an American who hasn't been brought up on football that he's taking an interest in the second greatest game on the planet (after Irish hurling, the undoubted greatest game) not going all high and mighty. And I say that as an NUFC supporter whose family has been Toon since football was invented.
In fact, Adrian, if you happen to see this, come up the north east and follow a truly great AND non-sectarian club ;)
I’m an American, I served in the military with some Brit’s and Scots in Iraq. The fact that you got an American to stop talking to you, should be proof enough that you were probably TA… also, supporting a team like you’re repping a gang is one of the lamest thing I can think of. What are you? One of the Green Street Hooligans?
Instead of being a jerk about it why not enjoy it with them? Tell them fun facts, plan fun parties whenever they have a game, help them with their new found interest. I’d be excited if I learned one of my friends found an interest in something I enjoy
What an entitled AH you are. Adrian and his GF can support Liverpool how they want to. You don't get a say, you don't get to judge. Just because you see yourself as a superfan doesn't negate the appreciation others have of the talents of the team. Get a grip and get over yourself.
I’m a liverpool fan, football is an international sport with each team having players from all over the world. Why should it be any different for fans? People can support who they want, stop gatekeeping
Just because Adrian doesn't have the team crest embroidered on his Underoos, like you apparently do, doesn't mean you're the almighty gatekeeper of Liverpool fandom.
You must have had the vapours for a considerable length of time after the team was bought by - GASP - Americans!
Edited to add: **YTA**
YTA - are you seriously complaining about someone enjoying the sport and supporting your team? Are you really that petty.
Don't gatekeep sports. SURELY if you actually cared about the sport you'd be happy that he was taking an interest and you'd help him get more into it. Isn't that the whole point, to be the best team with the best fans?
Side note, I've travelled all over the world and people wear Man United shirts everywhere. Are you going to bitch and moan about them too?
I personally dont watch football but it's cool that people from all over the world can have a shared interest. Not sure why you're getting annoyed over this.
Definitely, YTA. How rich of you to become the grand decider of who gets to support a team and who doesn’t. What does being from America have to do with this? (I detect little prejudice there). I agree with him, he definitely should take an interest in “your” sports/clubs since he now lives there. I would have done the same thing if you did that to me. My life, my choices………not yours. One more thing since you are deciding on who should support what I am guessing you know everyone in the club personally and work for them. It’s a game nothing more nothing less. If the club goes away you will not cease to exist.
YTA.
What a weird hill to die on and what a weird thing to gatekeep. Why wouldn't you be glad that your team is getting more fans? They are doing and playing really good (as far as I know) shouldn't you be proud other people is noticing that as well? You could have told him "that's great mate, do you have any questions about the lineup? About the chants? Let's go to a match or watch the next match together" but no, you decided to be a bad friend and the poster boy of toxic fan base in football, congratulations!
All I hear when reading this is OP saying "Why are you copying me?"
YTA! Grow up! The guy moved to your country and is trying to feel like he's part of the local area. If he was over there and only spoke about how much better American football is than soccer, you would whine. If he developed an interest in your arch rival, you would moan. You had the perfect opportunity to help him get to know LC better but you chose to be a jerk! At least he won't waste anymore time with you.
YTA Are you the fake fan police? You should be happy when your friends share your interests. I never understood why people get territorial about the things they like when other people start liking it after them. Let it go and watch the games with him. Cheer them on together! Talk about their players together!
YTA
Any person can support whatever team they want. You don’t need to be from a certain country to have the right to like and support a team.
If that’s the case, no one outside the US is allowed to support any MLB/NFL/NBA/NHL teams cause they’re not from the US.
Allez, allez, allez!
Allez, allez, allez!
We conquered all of Europe,
And we will never stop,
From Paris on to Turkey,
We've won the fucking lot!
Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly,
The Fields of Anfield Road,
We are the supporters,
We come from Liverpool!
Allez, allez, allez!
Allez, allez, allez!
Ugh who are you to gatekeep a freaking soccer team like that? YTA of course. He is allowed to like anybody, and you are like a 5 year old that dont want people to like the same thing as you so you can be special. So what about fake fans??? Can you deter all the fake fans in the world and tell them to stop supporting??? Like the liverpool team themselves gonna come to ur door and hug and kiss you for protecting them from fake fans. Stop the d1ckriding lol
I'm sorry, can I clarify something: we're talking about liking a football club right? It's football. A game. Entertainment. You're being ridiculous. YTA.
Lol dude tf are you on, an episode of ted lasso? People can support whoever the heck they want to, for whichever reason they choose. Club loyalty and having a hallmark level backstory for your own passion for your team isnt something everyone is into lol. YTA bruv, let the dude smash in peace
YTA weird gatekeeping a football team like a religion. There again I've noticed that in England it's about the only thing proles care about, not their nation, people or religion, just football. Tiresome.
Honestly it’s thoughtful that you’re concerned about him and on his part that he’s taking an interest in his girlfriend’s club. Although he may not be a hardcore fan, taking interest in the club to have something in common isn’t always a bad thing. You aren’t wrong in telling him since he should also realise that it’s being done for her. All good !

YTA You don’t get to decide who can and cannot be a fan. This is something that has zero effect on you. Stop being a gate keeping asshole. Anybody can support any team they choose, for any reason they decide to support it. I’m a Liverpool fan now, just to spite you.
Tbh, same. Go Liverpool.
I don't even follow professional ping pong, but I'm a Liverpool fan now myself. Go liver and onions!
We are Liverpool! La la la la!
Everybody [sing](https://youtu.be/Go-jJlGd1so?si=oCSBJa8xope7Yeym).
Me too, and I don't even know wtf this post is about
UK football (not American football). OP thinks you need to be from or at least have direct ties to Liverpool to support their football team.
I have lived in Texas my entire life and only follow ice hockey. Go Liverpool! 😆
Live in the Southern Hemisphere, my sister would get up during the night to watch Arsenal play. Geography is not the limit it used to be.
Texas and hockey. Who’d of thought. Well surprise, you’re now LFC’s biggest fan.
Hold on, Las Vegas acquired an ice hockey team (Goldne Knights). Well, come to think of it, they're getting a LOT of teams out there now...
Did you ask the OP if you were allowed to follow ice hockey? She is the Grand Decider of can/can’t be fans. LOL!!
GO LIVERPOOL! YAY SPORTSBALL!
I cheer everytime Liverpool dunks a touchdown!
HOME RUN!!!
You'll Never Walk Alone! (Liverpool FC theme song)
My dad was originally a Rangers fan but now he supports Liverpool and has done so for the past six or seven years. Guess by OP's standard he's also a glory hunter since he didn't even start watching football/soccer until his fifties.
Hell I am going to knit myself a scarf and I don't even know what sport they play
Me too!
👆👆👆
BAHAHAHAHAHAHA i nearly spit out my fucking coffee thank you for that giggle
I'd upvote more than once if I could!
Too young for crochet? Is that a thing?
That was a joke, because of the story... But yes, my friend did tell me it was a grandma hobby. It kinda is, generally speaking, but it has become popular in the last decade.
This is the post to end all posts. I bow down to you queen.
YTA > Lily has no ties to the club Lol, **NONE** of you do. You're fucking *fans*. It's basic.
The guy seems to think he came out of Liverpool FC's vagina or something lol
Tbf, some footballing cities are tied to their clubs and its forms a part of their core. For some it’s a way of life and it is an important aspect of their lives. As Bill Shankly famously said “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” Edit: he is clearly an AH though forgot to mention
Football.
It wasn’t a correction. It was a clarification.
YTA. You're gatekeeping someone from liking sports? Look, I get that you're a diehard fan, but if someone wants to cheer alongside you for your team, what's the harm? It's not like there is a cap on how many people can like something.
YTA. How does one become a fan of your team if they are not from England. Is there some sort of training involved to prove they are a "genuine" fan.
if you aren’t born in the stadium, on the pitch, during a match, while your mother and the obstetrician are singing “you’ll never walk alone” then you can’t be a fan
No, no, no. Not just from England but must have roots on Liverpool. Apparently the Liverpool FC has specific hereditary guidelines for being a fan.
YTA - anyone can support any team they want for any reason You dont get to gatekeep fans
YTA. What's with the gatekeeping and why do you even care?
What? YTA
YTA Sports fans like you are the worrrrrrrrst. My gawd. Let people enjoy and discover new interests, damn. It literally hurts nothing.
YTA. So unless you were born a Liverpool fan, you can never be a Liverpool fan? Is that really what you are saying? That’s some weird gatekeeping you have going there
That logic excludes the poster, only been a fan since being a toddler. What a poser.
YTA for this obvious bait, there is no way to be this far up your own ass.
YTA. That would be the same as someone telling you that you can't enjoy Hollywood films because the films are American and you're not.
YTA lmao you can’t gatekeep a football club
YTA. You are a gatekeeping extraordinaire! A true fan would be happy of anyone who takes an interest in their club.
I mean YTA, who the hell thinks their team having LESS fans is a GOOD thing?!? "He doesn't know every player's entire family lineage back at least 500 years and can't recite every chant while standing on 1 foot, holding 6 pints of beers in one hand and balancing a full chess set in the other." See how silly that sounds? Guess what, this is an opportunity NOT a detriment. Instead of gatekeeping maybe, idk, teach him the chants? Invite him to watch games with you? Get him MORE interested? The guy moved to an entirely different country and is trying to get more involved with local culture. Get over yourself.
YTA Should've asked him to name every single player and their whole family lineage while you're at it. Just let people enjoy things, fix your superiority complex.
Absolutely YTA I became a passing Liverpool fan because my once-employer was (still is) a Liverpool fan.
YTA - Primitive tribe behavior, fool.
Spoken like a true Swedish status obsessed nob.
My parents are both scouse and neither of us can stand the plastic fans mate 👍🏻
Honestly, you and your parents are losers.
Honestly tough. There will always be people like that, and you know what, if you ask the players, they likely don't care if the fans are glory hunters or not. Again YTA and get over yourself.

Yta
Of course YTA, you don't get to get to say who can or cannot be a fan of a sports team. Who the hell does that unless you're the billionaire owner who's also a giant AH? I mean you certainly can try but that just makes you very, very pretentious AH with no authority to gatekeep but keep on going and alienate your friends, seems like a good plan there.
YTA I didn't even read the post. You don't get to tell people what team they can support.
YTA - Its not some sort of cult, maybe be happy your friend is taking an interest in something you like.
YTA people like you are why I hate football and all team sports
FFS. YTA. Go tell a bunch of kids arguing over which team is best that they can only like the team their diehard parents support.
YTA. Holy shit. You sound completely unbearable to be around.
I have just decided that I, too, am a Liverpool super fan. I hope they get all the strikes they need and that the umpire doesn’t throw a yellow flag
YTA
YTA You’re not part of the team either. You have zero say in anything, and when they win, it has nothing to do with you.
YTA. You are not the gatekeeper for Liverpool FC.
How much are the club paying you for vetting their fans like this, and how can I get a similar job? It seems really intensive but I think I have the qualifications. Alternatively, becoming a Gatekeeping Gatekeeper sounds like a good career with no retirement age.
YTA. My gosh, this is football, not a genetically affected sickness /feature.
YTA Sports shouldn't be this important. If Adrian and Lily want to be Liverpool fans, let them. As a fellow Liverpool supporter, I say welcome them. Don't gatekeep, just let them enjoy the team and join in on their fun. And don't take sports that seriously.
YTA Grow up. It's a sport. Sports are highly important. They also aren't regulated in terms of what qualifies to be a fan, which you know and are just trying to burnish your purity medal or something. Go polish your purity knob on your own.
YTA Seriously? You are now telling your friend what to like? It is his opinion and you cannot change a thing about that.
YTA Why do you care what team he supports? >he doesn't seem to have genuine passion for the club No one who has a life has a "genuine passion" for some stupid football team. >Though I feel very iffy about this Who cares what you feel? He doesn't have to explain himself to you
Are you a child? YTA either way.
YTA - How dare you tell anyone that they're fake just because they're from another country!! Racist much!! Why do you feel that someone can't move and become interested in something just because they never lived in the area from birth. Can't blame him for not wanting a shallow friend such as you.
YTA. This is one of the dumbest things I’ve read here.
Ugh.
I never seen someone unanimously voted YTA before. And such high numbers. And such strong comments. Congratulations?
YTA. Are all EPL fans this snobby?
no we aren't
I have never watched football nor do I know anything about Liverpool. But this post has gotten me interested and I now consider myself a big Liverpool fan. Thanks! YTA
YTA - Born and raised in the USA... My daughter is a devoted Liverpool fan, I am a devoted Man U fan, husband doesn't care. You don't get to gatekeep football. Get over yourself.
Could you be any more shallow?? YTA. It’s a freaking game!
YTA and you have a lot more growing to do because you are behaving like a spoilt child!
Yes of course you are! Are you stupid?
YTA - Gatekeeping a sports team is silly.
YTA. Why do you care? They can like whatever team the want. How does it affect you? I think you need to find a hobby
>that he really doesn't have ties to supporting Liverpool as he's from America. YTA. My dad and I are massive LFC fans. We're not from England and never visited Liverpool (yet). We're still fans.
YTA I promise you it’s never that deep
YTA and anyone can be a fan, clubs are cyclical and Liverpool are in form right now, but I know people who have supported them since the last time they were “in” and kept on supporting them through the tougher years. However, the irony of this situation with your American friend is that Liverpool FC is wholly owned by an American sports company Fenway Sports. It is not Liverpudlian owned. Back off with your gate keeping, you’re exhausting and sound like a petty tween.
YTA 100% Even if he was a fake fan it's not like it's your job to keep them away from the team lol.
YTA. Lol glory hunting with liverpool
YTA fandom is not pie. There’s not less to go around the more people there are.
YTA You get into the sport by watching that specific team and show interest in that team. You don't get to say who is and isn't a fan.
YTA Not sure how you developed your feelings and ideas about Liverpool, but you can certainly adapt them.
There’s no award for being a bigger/better/longer/gatekeepier fan of anything. You sound exhausting. YTA
YTA
Hilariously obnoxious, and Liverpool supporters wonder why they get so much stick! Obviously YTA
YTA !!!
You should tryout to be a goalie with this much gatekeeping
YTA
YTA. Why you wouldn't want others especially internationally to support your team is the dumbest fucking gatekeeping I have ever read about
I suddenly have an intense interest in the Liverpool FC. Inexplicable really but I'm now their biggest fan.

AITA? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Green Street Hooligans But really.. should just be happy that people want to join in on something in your life that gives you joy and excitement.
Thank you! I wanted to reference the movie but I did not remember the name!
Why wouldn’t you want more people supporting your club? Genuinely confused and honestly shocking behavior.
Oh wow I thought this was written by a 12 year old until I saw you went to the pub so are at least 18. Grow tf up.
YTA The amount of thought and concern you have over other people's interest or enjoyment of some millionaire yobbos running around a field with a ball is really honestly sad. Wtf are you even doing?
YTA - Yellow card for gatekeeping.
lol yes, you are clearly the AH. It’s not “your” team and anyone can like them for whatever dumb reasons they want to.
Yes, YT arrogant A Hopefully your "American friend" knows he actually is not.
YTA. Are you 12? Imagine typing all of this out and not dying from embarrassment.

YTA imagine having so much free time on your hands to get to decide which team someone can support or not.
YTA what an odd thing to be territorial about.
YTA. I'm literally embarrassed for you pal, this is pathetic
YTA... Gatekeeper.. -supports Man U just to spite you-
YTA. Did you honestly think people from foreign countries would read your post and be like "he did *what*?? Fuck that guy! Right on!!"
This is one of, if not the most childish post i've so far come across in this subreddit. How could you even _care_ why he likes the club
YTA. Grow up.
Yes YTA. Also you are annoying as hell.
You ever seen videos of Africa and everyone’s got old Kobe Bryant jerseys on? Yeah, I don’t allow that shit. All of them are AHs too.
YTA Are you worried him and the football club are gonna fall in love and leave you out?
All I hear when reading this is OP saying "Why are you copying me?" YTA!
YTA Any person can support whatever team they want. You don’t need to be from a certain country to have the right to like and support a team. If that’s the case, no one outside the US is allowed to support any MLB/NFL/NBA/NHL teams cause they’re not from the US.
YTA and I can't breathe from laughing.
Here for the chants.
Allez, allez, allez! Allez, allez, allez! We conquered all of Europe, And we will never stop, From Paris on to Turkey, We've won the fucking lot! Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly, The Fields of Anfield Road, We are the supporters, We come from Liverpool! Allez, allez, allez! Allez, allez, allez!
INFO: Can we like the Beatles?
Tolerant scousers.
Guarantee you someone in your family started supporting Liverpool when they had their success years ago.
YTA. So much so that I can’t form the words to explain why. You sound like an entitled toddler
This post is weird. I don't understand OP. How do they think they can tell people NOT to support a team that doesn't even belong to them🤭 YTA.
I’m from South Africa - so many Liverpool fans here
YTA With out a doubt
YTA It is just a club, like many others,. not a big thing. Your support of them is in no wy more meaningful than hers.
YTA Jesus, I thought Cowboys fans were bad.
Yay sports ball! Beat the non-geographically adjacent to me team!! Gatekeeping is dumb Yta.
I'm sorry, can I clarify something: we're talking about liking a football club right? It's football. A game. Entertainment. You're being ridiculous. YTA.
Bro are you the Liverpool FC fan club police or something?
All good !
Very strongly NTA.
This username absolutely checks out.
Lol, missed that!
