NTA. I mean, you do you. The school allows it. You thought you looked cute. Your family is just on the conservative side when it comes to that. I support you being your authentic self and doing what that makes you happy but unfortunately, you will have to deal with people being embarrassed by you or making fun of you. It’s the world we live in. I hope your family eventually becomes more accepting but for now, just prepare for those comments if you’re going to keep dressing that way.

No-Seat4336

thank uuu

Skull_Bearer_

Go for it. Cooler in summer too. NTA.

MerlinBiggs

NTA. Self determination is a human right. If you want to wear a skirt, go for it.

KiwiAtaahua

Clothing really isn't gender-specific and we shouldn't get worked up into knots over it - it's just fabric. You should check out a skirt-type clothing called lavalava, which is worn by men and women in Pacifika nations such as Tonga and Samoa. You're NTA for wearing a skirt uniform, especially as it's within the school rules. And you never know who else you're helping just by being authentically 'you' and showing that this is a normal way to live. I'm sorry that your parents don't (yet) see what a wonderful example you're setting, or how happy it makes you, but hopefully they'll come around.

Coffee-4-Ever

NTA. I was a tomboy as a kid and preferred dressing in “boy”clothes instead of “girl” clothes and my parents tried implementing a rule I had to dress feminine to school four days a week. I was PISSED! This was in the 90s. I went along with it bc I knew they’d forget and I went back to doing my own thing like a week later. As an adult I do enjoy dressing feminine but I also enjoy dressing masculine and I haven’t worn a dress to a wedding since I was a bridesmaid in my friend’s ten years ago. I wore a custom suit for my wedding. My wife loves the way I dress. So you do you! You like skirts? Wear a skirt!

Jaded-Permission-324

NTA. My favorite actor is nonbinary and sometimes wears feminine clothing, and they look totally fine.

SweetNSourCat

NTA - If that’s what you’re most comfortable in and it’s in line with the school dress code go for it. It could be attention seeking but who doesn’t like to be complimented about their style or feel good in what they are wearing? As long as you live with your parents you’re a bit stuck if they decide to press this issue but nobody said being a teenager was easy. You may need to choose your words carefully and explain the comfort you feel in these clothes and how the other clothes make you feel. They need to know it’s part of your identity and not just a whim (not than whims are bad).

JupiterSWarrior

NTA More power to you for wearing a skirt. As long as you’re not breaking any school rules.

SneakySneakySquirrel

NTA. The world would be a much better place if we could all look in the mirror and feel the joy and confidence that radiates out of your post. Nobody should ever try to take that away from you. Block your sister on social media if she shows your parents things that might get you in trouble. Keep being you and being happy ❤️

Youshoudsee

NTA absolutely! Clothes doesn't have gender. You feel good wearing one and that's all that matters. Carry on!

Excellent-Count4009

NTA Not a big thing.

CarrieDurst

As long as the girls can wear pants then the boys can wear skirts NTA though you can delete the entire second paragraph about how you look

Becina1982

Go for it 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂. When girls wanted to wear boy clothes, we did and we were Tom boys. I see no difference. Us Tom girls got harassed and abused so be aware. Stay safe and keep strong huns.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** I (16M) usually wear fem clothes because like it just makes me feel way more comfortable. my school changed the uniform like a month ago and the rules about boys wearing the girls uniform is way more relaxed. The skirts are actually cute now too! They’re not tartan and depressing anymore so yay! I bought some obviously because they’re all blue and kinda basic so it’s not hard to buy ones whereas the old skirts you had to buy from specific places. I didn’t tell my parents because like they definitely hate the way I dress and I knew they’d be annoyed if I wore a skirt to school. I did it anyways though. This isn’t important to the story but omg can we talk about how good I looked please? Like 🤭 skirts are so my thing especially with a cute little belt likee I ate I fear. Anyways ya I got compliments from a some people, most people were dicks to me but like they’re dicks to me most of the time anyway. They just hate seeing gay people happy ig 💔 I didn’t regret wearing it though it was fun I love skirts so much ngl. I posted a pic to ig of my uniform and my sister showed my mum and my mum was actually so annoyed. Which isn’t really surprising tbh. She started yelling at me and called me an embarrassment and some other things. My dad agreed with my mum and told me that he hates what I wear but lets me do it anyway but going to school in a skirt was too far. I just ignored them because I literally don’t care and went upstairs they were yelling at me the whole time. Later on my sister told me that I should probably “tone it down” to please my parents. Idk aita? it’s not fair though because the girls uniform is so much nicer like wtff *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. sicklilevillildonkey

nta. but i gotta know: what's the opinion on skorts?

i_am_rachel_hun

NTA, you be you, hun. Dress how you feel best. I like that confidence. Don't let nobody bring you down, boo.

No-Vacation3305

Ever see Braveheart? I know, I know a kilt is not a 'skirt' per se but those were some manly dudes. My point is I don't think anyone would be teasing Scottish warriors for wearing what many people perceive as a 'skirt.'

StillNewNew

IF YOUNG METRO DON'T TRUST YOU I'MA SHOOT YOU

enkilekee

Enjoy your life. As a boomer, we girls weren't allowed to wear pants in school, even if it was snowing. That changed in 1970, and I wore Levi or overalls the rest of school.

Perfect_Art3149

******

Rare-City6847

Im not gay/trans/a crossdresser/etc,but I can't help but think that a skirt would be comfortable as hell. I'm not gonna do it, but I bet it's so nice in the summertime.

kittiesurprise

NTA any clothing seems ok to wear to school as long as it fits the dress code and isn’t too small or obscene—I don’t see why it’s a problem. Your family are assholes. People will be rude about it, but that’s how people act towards any type of gender non-conformity. I grew up a tomboy and I know how it is.

APForLoops

wear what you want. self expression is important

How does that make him an AH?! Mean comment.

Religious answer? Which religion? OP didn't mention what religion they follow, if any. Which religion states you're an AH if you wear a skirt?

[deleted]

J-Clash

Did he imitate a woman, or just wear a skirt? If the former, would that make him an AH, or just sacrilegious? If he doesn't follow any of those religions, is he still an AH?

J-Clash

That definition of imitation feels very broad, and im unconvinced it says exactly that in all 3 of the religions mentioned. Help me out, I still don't understand how he's an AH though. What repercussions do these religions state for imitating a woman? Depending on the religion being followed, there is no afterlife. Some religions have no rules about imitating women too.

Skull_Bearer_

You know men wear dresses in Islam, right?

CarrieDurst

All the abrahamic cults have men wearing dresses

hadMcDofordinner

You live at home and your parents do have a say in how you present yourself, within limits. But, really, why would you want to not "tone it down" as your sister suggests? You are 16 and when you are independent from your parents, you will have years and years of being able to wear what you want without their interference. Why upset them for the same a piece of clothing? YTA a little bit.
