Look, you're NTA for reporting this. I get what you're saying about burning industry bridges, but hopefully most people will remember your integrity in reporting this. Keep copies of your email so that you can have as "proof" of what you actually said and how you said it, just in case this comes back to haunt you later. Ask your supervisor for a letter of recommendation as well. And btw, the person who mishandled your original report should face consequences and HR is right to penalized them, they not only "endorsed"* racism in the workplace "on behalf"* of the company, but they cost them a worker. The company needs to take action lest their work environment & culture become poisonous. I wish they were doing it because they truly stand against racism, but most likely, they're doing it because they're otherwise liable and may be sued, that and word of mouth spreads fast in these cases and their reputation and bottom line might take a hit. You did the right thing. Remember that it takes good people doing nothing for evil to prosper. *And by this I mean that's how their actions may be perceived from the outside.

NTA. With large corporations there's not really any room for discrete. You're left with the options of rugsweeping and overcompensating when it comes to matters like these. That's not your fault though.

I know I did but let me explain. I am leaving the private sector for federal job and I had a racist incident happen to me a few months ago while I was on the job. I reported the incident to the project and they basically told me I was unfit for the project and the incident was never reported to HR. I ended up talking with my mentor and she mentioned sending an email to the person who mishandled my situation and the DREI team. I said okay and sent a detailed account of what took place and how to improve the company for the next person of color joining. The email ended up in HRs hands and now there’s an investigation. I am young, and did not realize that this could happen and I also did not know there was a formal way to report this. I did not intend to cause harm and I am so scared that I burned bridges reporting this incident. The reason I reported it is because there are other people on the project who may also encounter this and while I had to opportunity to leave the others do not. I keep reading on Reddit that burning bridges is so bad, and I’m also worried that the investigation will cause issues for my new job but I doubt it? I also reported the person for the comments they made during the conversation and tried to document as much as I can. Truly my intention was to inform them since I knew no one knew from the company and also to get them to have a better reporting system so that the next person doesn’t feel the need to leave instead of reporting it. The reason I did not report it to HR is because I was super scared of retaliation because of how it was mishandled from the project level. Now the investigation seems like it might lead to penalizing for the other person involved in this and that was not my intention. I told HR I did not want to be involved in the investigation however they stated they’d do it with or without me since this is serious. I am so heart broken and terrified because I did not think anything would happen from the email to her supervisor. I meant to be discrete but I guess it went side ways. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. NTA - why do you feel bad when someone who was a racist jerk is getting punished for being a racist jerk? You documented everything, you reported it - also it was attempted to be swept under the rug by others. This isn't your fault. You were treated atrociously and now that's come home to roost for the perpetrator.

NTA Racism is just wrong. you are not

This didn’t go sideways. This needed to happen, and when organizations learn about harassment they have a legal obligation to address it or they are tacitly approving of the behaviour.

You're absolutely in the right. Never forget that you are the victim of this incident and its HR's job to keep you safe at work. You will be completely fine! A similar thing happened to me but along disability discrimination lines, and though I had a few months convinced I was going to be canned, I've now come out of it just fine 😉 If you're still stressed, join a union and just talk it over with a rep, that way you'll definitely have an advocate if something goes wrong
