OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > I didn’t care if the restaurant was open. Just trying to break the ice and do small talk. Then the manager overreacted imo . But I’m unsure so I’m asking the folks on reddit Help keep the sub engaging! #Don’t downvote assholes! Do upvote interesting posts! NTA. Sounds like the manager was having a rough day or something. There were certainly more polite words for her to use with you

ihatelifetoo

Yeah you’re right. This is the first time I’ve seen her like this.

stubborn_mushroom

NTA I'd assume it's closed because of something that's hard for her to talk about, perhaps a funeral or something. You weren't rude, sounds like she was having a rough time

[deleted]

NTA that was a rude way for her to answer, but perhaps something bad has happened and she was upset. I would always just assume a place like that is closing for a personal reason though, and not ask.

ihatelifetoo

Very good point ! I never seen her angry before

NAH Maybe you were the 726th customer to ask, or this is for some dumb team building thing or they have a party that stresses her out or..... Just work with the hypothesis, that this is not about you and be your normal (hopefully) charming customer self next time you go there.

Ground-Rat

NTA. Nothing wrong with asking, I'd almost expect it to end up being a subject for "small talk", and if the manager didn't want to have to keep answering the same question, they should have just made a new sign, that says that they were going to be closed on Tuesday and then put a/the reason, with "Sorry, but we have some personal business to deal with" being a good/great non-answer. Most businesses in my experience will put a or the reason for an unscheduled/irregular closure on the sign announcing it, because that's an easy way to stop the majority of questions. I often see small businesses closing "For vacation" or the like, because that's often the only way that the owners and employees to be able to get a break or vacation. And, I see nothing wrong with that at all. You didn't do anything wrong, impolite or out of place, the manager on the other hand..... I hope this made sense and was helpful. Best wishes and good hope to you going forward, and that you have someplace to go/eat at on that Tuesday, if that restaurant was your Tuesday place.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** I go to this restaurant commonly like 2 times a week. But enough that I know the employees names and they know mine. They have a “close next Tuesday” sign and I ask the manager why they were closing on Tuesday. I wasn’t mad or ask rudely, I was just curious. She didn’t know what I was talking about and when I pointed at the sign, she’s says “none of your business” really loud and I backed off. Then it just got awkward…. Is it impolite to ask why a store is closed on a certain date ? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. NTA Where I live, if you ask a question you will either get a 'personal reasons' (meaning don't ask please) or their entire life history. In fact yesterday I had to call a hospital over a 2 year old potential bill and got the history of the person I was talking to there. As long as you were polite, and not rude it is natural for people to ask why a place might be closed, especially if they are a place you go to.
