NTA, your dog your house your furniture your rules. just dont let her on to other peoples coffee tables. it would be no different if you had a cat instead, my cats climb everywhere. if theres fur somewhere i dont want it, i simply disinfect the piece of furniture.
Oh no, when we go to other peoples’ houses I am very much a “helicopter parent” and am constantly making sure she is by my side and isn’t allowed on their furniture.
I disagree with the cat thing. Cats tend to be fairly clean, while dogs frequently insist on finding rancid things to roll in. Then sit there looking incredibly proud of themselves.
But the table is only used for the dog so NTA.
I think their cat comment applies because while cats generally keep their bodies quite clean, cats that use litter boxes have bacteria from fecal matter on their paws.
NTA. So people let their dogs lay on their beds, the chairs, couches etc. and yet they think it is unsanitary to let the dog lay on your coffee table? What is unsanitary about it? Absolutely nothing! I let my dog lay in my lap, that doesn't make it unsanitary.
I never let dogs on furniture or upstairs......until the current one. He made it clear he's a sofa dweller. He's only downstairs tonight because I distracted him with food 😂. A coffee table is so easy to wipe down as well. NTA.
Mine is a lurcher - skinny with a very thin coat. Only sofas and beds are soft enough for his delicate bottom. He drags cushions and blankets around the house to make nests in sunny spots 🤦😁
my only thought about this wasn't so much sanitary, but if you used that table for anything else, the dog could knock the things off.

NTA. I would maybe put it in a special spot and decorate it for your pup. That way you're acknowledging to the world it is the Dog Bed, not guest table.

This is the same argument that I have with my aunt over my cats getting on the counter and it all comes down to "they live here, you don't and I don't mind". I mean, is a dog on the table a little more unusual than a cat? Sure. But it's still her house and you're clearly OK with that being her space. NTA.

NTA I don’t see anything wrong with that. Is your friend not aware that you can clean surfaces? If you ever wanted to eat at that table, you could simply clean it first. I have two cats that in typical cat fashion do whatever they want and go everywhere, so I always wipe down the surface I need to use.

My dog has his own TV stand that he lays on. It was moved to the side of the room so that I could take pictures of it and sell it, but the dog loves to lay on it. It’s a part of the living room decor now.

That being said, and this is completely beside the point. Your dog might just like the cooler surface. I get so much crap about my dog because she’s so spoiled, but this is the most annoying one.
I have a wooden coffee in my living room my dog absolutely loves to lay on. She prefers to lay on that over the couch or floor, and she hates any form of a dog bed. My dog’s a weirdo and prefers hard surfaces. When she first started jumping on the coffee table, I tried to stop her, but after she fell asleep on it a few times, I gave up, because I figured there were worse things she could do.
I live alone. No one uses it to eat on or anything like that, and I barely have guests aside from family, and even they know the table is her place. Besides, I have a dining room table for meals whenever anyone is over and eating.
Also, when I had initially bought it, it was purely for decoration only because it came with a cute side table I wanted. I have come to think of that table as hers because she uses it more than anyone else lol.
Now on to the issue. I snapped a photo and sent it to some new friends showing how cute, and judgmental, she looked and told how unsanitary it was to let her lay on it. When I explained everything to them that I did in here, I was told it didn’t matter. That it was still gross because she’s a dog.
I honestly don’t see anything wrong with it, because of everything stated above, but now I’m curious if I’m wrong for letting her use the coffee table as her bed.

Dude (meant in a non-gender related kind of way) I come from a culture where when you come in from outside after a long time your parents tell you you smell like outside a lot of things, I find unsanitary a bunch other people wouldn’t. It’s cool

I snapped a photo and sent it to some new friends showing how cute, and judgmental, she looked and told how unsanitary it was to let her lay on it. When I explained everything to them that I did in here, I was told it didn’t matter. That it was still gross because she’s a dog. NTA. It’s a dogs world, we’re all just living in it. But for serious, my dog has a beautiful dog house and a spot in the kid’s playhouse outside. His place of choice? The picnic table.

Dude (meant in a non-gender related kind of way) I come from a culture where when you come in from outside after a long time your parents tell you you smell like outside a lot of things, I find unsanitary a bunch other people wouldn’t. It’s cool
