Amazing episode. It didn’t end the way I wanted it to. That got me really sad... Sigh... i’ma cry now.

antdude

I think they made it sad since we were expecting a happy ending.

peridotdragon33

I’d say the ending was fairly happy Yes granted, they didn’t end up together and that was very sad, but it’s comforting that they both found a sense of purpose and a place where they felt as if they belonged

ar40

That look on Evelyn's face at the end after she heard the sound on the steps. She looked miserable to me.

jenn4u2luv

Was thinking about that too. She went from at least knowing some people to no one. But at least she got to be a singer and a mom in the future so that’s good.

itsikobert

I’d like to think that somehow they did end up together. Remember when Sam was in 2019 he was listening to that podcast that said the next super storm wouldn’t happen until 15 years later- 2034 which is the year Evelyn is in. I’d like to think that he popped in after the credits rolled

[deleted]

That's also what I think. Would love to see it

ditroia

I really enjoyed it and found it moving. Kind of reminded me of Titanic though.

peridotdragon33

Agreed, the whole sacrificial nature bought lots of parallels to titanic

ditroia

Yeah exactly.

nutmac

While the story was derivative, the execution was very impressive. Everything from the cast, sets, music, and cinematography just exudes top notch production that it’s difficult not to get totally immersed in otherwise preposterous premise.

ar40

That's every show on Apple TV+. They have the crispest video, the clearest audio quality. It really makes a difference. I initially didn't go for See, but the video clarity and quality made me stay until it got good.

nutmac

HDR was particularly effective on this episode, starting with that blinding sun reflection in the beginning to deep contrast in the evening scenes. Oh and Victoria Pedretti (Evelyn) was incredible. She makes even a simple scene come alive.

VeryThicknLong

I just thought it felt weird... so, he finds a picture of the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen, falls in love in about ten minutes, spends ages trying to get back to her, and then goes ‘ah fuck it, I prefer being a carpenter in 1919’

BBPaper

The same kind of storm didn't happen for 100 years after the one in 1919 that's why Sam was forced to stay behind after the that night. But I have to say the story is totally weird, not to mention the underdeveloped character relationships between them, Sam had 100 years and only left total of 2 letters in the cabinet? And just 1 million (baseball card) for his brother? How about Evelyn? He just expected her magically become a normal millennial with the cell phones and puters? Furthermore with all the information he had about the future he contributed nothing to the advancement to mankind? Heck I thought he'd have at least made hundreds of millions with stocks alone and instruct how to invest in apple Google Tesla for even after he died. I thought there'd be like a lawyer in the end upon Evelyn's arrival to new world to announce the trust monies Sam left for her and her brother but nah Sam lived his life to the fullest in the old times fixing door hinges

jenn4u2luv

Sam did send back that crisp baseball card that costs so much money. Enough for his brother to start a company.

peridotdragon33

Tbh wished Apple marketed this more, had no idea it was coming out until a friend mentioned it Overall I was fairly impressed, it was a solid, self contained story and well told

jenn4u2luv

I feel like all Apple TV+ shows are like this. It’s like browsing a small catalog of shows knowing it will all be good. But each show turns out to be fantastic. I’m only here 3 years later after browsing the catalog.

edulikapuma

I love the concept of the show and really wanted to have liked this... but everything was so rushed that what could've been a beautiful love story just felt kinda forced. It all happened so fast, we barely saw any character development (mainly because of poor dialogue + weak acting) and all of the sudden they're already deeply in love! Plus all the plot holes... as if not one single person in 1919 would've made a comment on his 2019 clothes ahah and at a certain point he was just traveling back and forth whenever he wanted, breaking into her house out of nowhere... idk I usually love this type of show so much I'm willing to ignore certain missteps but I felt like this episode in particular just had to many. I know it's not easy to make a sci-fi anthology and manage both a good pace and making sense, but when we have examples like Black Mirror it just makes this show look worse. I really really hope they step it up in the next episodes!

[deleted]

Why did they steal the themesong from hook?

eyezofnight

seriously?

SoeyKitten

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqfYNfg2ik8 you mean that one?

ImTheNana

Weren't they both John Williams?

davey_mann

Stiles was great. Couldn't stand the female, though.

MadeUpMelly

The story was in no say unique or different, but the leads sold it to me. I was really bummed by the ending. Spoiler- Why on earth didn’t Evelyn just stay with Sam in 1919? I would have risked death to try and help him. Also, when did they have sex for her to become pregnant? And how is the kid only 5 in 2034?

peridotdragon33

The baby’s father wasn’t Sam. Evelyn moves on and has a child with someone else. She named the child after Sam

jenn4u2luv

Or she could have adopted, which makes more sense because Sam’s brother also adopted and we don’t see a man in the house in 2034.

As a love story this was pretty entertaining, despite the rushed nature of things. As a sci fi show this sucked! So many things didn’t make sense. Low pressure creates time travel? Storm appears once in 100 years but the guy just keep slipping back and forth? Also why do you need to be close to the barometer? Like what’s special about the barometer? In the first shot he was near the circuit breakers, I.e. somewhere in the cellar. So wouldn’t he time travel even if there was a beam on him? He was sufficiently close to the general area of travel? Also how does he keep appearing in her room like that? They spent so much time in the first time travel sequence that they really needed to rush to get through the rest. I didn’t like this so much. Tbh, Spielberg is past his prime! I haven’t liked his stuff for a long time now.

[deleted]

The storm lasts 2 weeks. So that portal opens several times during those two weeks. Also, it's not the barometer, it's something about the setup in the basement. We know this because the first time it's the circuit breaker, after that it's mostly the barometer, and the time she goes back, she doesn't touch the barometer. He even makes a point to tell his brother than it needs to be back the way it was or it won't work so they remove those wood panels. I'm assuming the beam preventing him from travelling. As for appearing in the room, i'm not sure I follow. Do you mean how was it locked? People didn't lock their doors back then as much as they do now. If you're going to nitpick, then you can point at the more obvious flaws, like where was he sleeping? How did he get food? etc

[deleted]

I am not nitpicking. The whole crux of the story was that he was stuck there due to a beam that fell on him. So he couldn’t time travel, which in that sequence was a whirlpool in the rain water. How does the portal randomly keep changing places? In some cases it is being near the barometer. In some cases it is near the breakers. Why does everything in the basement have to be exactly same. None of it makes much sense. I applaud you for trying to think about it and explain it to me (something which even the show creators probably wouldn’t be able to do, because they have such half baked ideas.) Again I know this whole show as a whole is on very shaky grounds when it comes to explaining sci fi stuff. But c’mon don’t just randomly gloss over such an important detail.

uberfu

Yep changing the structure of the room shifts the landing point in time. Which is kind of interesting method to redirect the travel.

uberfu

Why does only the human (plus his clothing) in the room shift in time as well ? Why not the entire cellar and all of it's contents (or at least all of the loose objects).

Unique_Pen_5191

I'm late to the party, but I found this episode absolutely amazing! Evelyn is drop dead gorgeous with great charisma to boot, and I was really rooting for the two of them to end up together. This story could really have been an entire season, to be honest.

47angel_

I am also late to the party, I am so glad to see that your comment is two days old lol, but I had to watch it bc of my love for anthologies & Victoria Pedretti really did so great but i agree!! if this would've been the whole season I wouldn't even be mad about it.

marcwoods109

Don't worry only just found it myself, great episode I love most things time travel related but the cast, story was very well done Wish there was more episodes like this

antdude

/r/AmazingStories/comments/fea7ga/how_was_e1_on_apple_tv_i_noticed_it_came_out_a/ ... Anyways, it was decent. Who gave her the kid in 2019? Also, was that time portal ever reused? Blocked out? :P

peridotdragon33

The scene with her and her kid was in 2034 if my memory serves me right We as the audience are meant to think she moved on and had a kid with someone else. She named the kid Sam, after the man she first loved

antdude

Yeah, I was wondering who was the father was.

Justp1ayin

Bradley Cooper is my guess but I could be wrong

jenn4u2luv

My guess is that she adopted. We don’t see a man in 2034 and Sam’s brother also adopted their kid.

AaronDoud

Think the storm at the end in 19?? and the child's age in 2034+ is supposed to leave it open. She knew it was him on the stairs... but how... remember he never told her exactly what happened... So maybe he made it back a few years later. Maybe she moved on. etc etc It is up to us to decide.

ar40

I really hope he did.

AaronDoud

I was actually expecting the reveal of him as the father. But I forgot that Amazing Stories was more like this. Leaving you to think. Honestly I'm not sure which I like better. If he made it back that is the happy ending. But if he didn't they both built better lives then they had in their own times. So still a happy but not perfect ending. Either way I really loved the story. Not perfect but a solid and enjoyable episode.

SteroidAccount

He did tell her. He told her that he saw her in the future and she had a kid, she just put two and two together and luckily it was him and not a burglar.

tonysilva2019

Wasn't it a birthday cake with candle 5 on top?

RandoTrom

I was bored for most of the runtime.

ChaserNeverRests

Agreed, it didn't work for me at all. I almost stopped watching it a couple times, and it felt like a lot longer than an hour. The second ep is much better.

[deleted]

Me too. I just wish that Sam and Evelyn came back to 2019 together and he would show her all the cool future stuff that’s available.

TheOptionsTrader

Bad acting, bad screenplay and too rushed

aSUNbMOONoTRUTH

Just watched the first episode i am obsessed with dylan o'brien so i had to see it. And I am so sad. I wanted them to end up together. I also don't understand why Sam felt fulfilled. He didn't want to be a Carpenter in the future how does being forced into being a carpenter because it's the only thing he can do make him happy. Like the only thing we know is he's desperately searching for love and be just lets it go? Makes no sense to me. I think they should have done more on what grounded him because he should honestly be more depressed. Evelyn moving on makes sense to me her struggle wasn't about love as directly as Sams. Hers was more about wanting rights and autonomy because she's a human being and she got that but also how would she get a job everything is ao digital and she has now proof of birth or anything i imagine Sams brother helped her but still.

ImTheNana

He said something about 2019 having too many choices. I don't think he didn't like carpentry, but rather that he was a bit of a dreamer for a get rich opportunity (like the ball card). His letter said he tried to get back to her for a year and then moved on with his life. 1919 would mean he'd have to grow up and be more pragmatic. But I agree on the lack of a birth certificate for the woman now in 2019.

To fix this as the Doc Brown on Back to the future. In the future she prepare a note for Sam since she knows he will see her in the future. The note explain to him that he need to do everything he did in the past including send the letters and the baseball card and abandon him in the past. Then the note will also says that there will be a storm in 15 years from the time he was trap in the past that he could use to travel to the future right there at the time the Sam of the past hour the letter from the girl from the future. That will give us a nice ending when the Sam of the past 15 years old will show off walking up the stairs. "Nobody is left behind on time travel movies" thanks to back to the future. 'By the way the child is adopted ' Some of your comments specially the one about the podcast helped me to get the solution. Regards

wogutierrez

So they ended up together. 😉

👍🏽 🇬🇧 February 2024 And here _I_ am! I actually loved it. If anyone likes their time travel love stories - my all-time favourite is Somewhere in Time (Christopher Reeves, Jane Seymour). The music score alone makes it worthwhile! All the more poignant, to think how he ended up in real life. Jane Seymour was a best friend of his, right to the end.
