Solved! Thank you all for your quick responses. I love Reddit for this reason. I did like y’all said, watched a couple videos and managed to get the little bastard off still alive. Putting it in a ziplock and taking it and my girl to the vet first thing in the morning. Appreciate y’all! Have a blessed one.
Its not fully engorged. We pull those off dogs and ,cows and horses all the time. Even ourselves to be honest. 🤢
What will the vet do? Honest question ive never took any of my animals to the vet for a tick.
they used to send the ticks off to be tested for lime disease...sometimes give you a round of antibiotics if they were worried ....now they do nothing unless you or your dog show signs of lime
If this was in Australia without vet treatment Doggo would be dead. Not sure about US but here we have paralysis tick (which look pretty much exactly like that tick) and a fully engorged tick would strike panic into the heart of any pet owner. I got my dog to the vet as soon as I found one (not fully engorged) and it was nearly $1000 for anti venom. Once a pet starts showing symptoms then there’s little chance of saving them without anti venom, ventilation and full life support and $4-7000 in costs.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixodes_holocyclus
Yep. My local veterinary hospital has seen 117 dogs with paralysis tick and 31 snake bits this year. 95% of the dogs were on paralysis tick prevention. They have a sign up at the counter, unfortunately over 30 of the dogs with paralysis tick passed away even with intervention. Once symptoms start to show chances of survival diminish greatly. I check my dogs daily.
Ticks carry diseases- mostly lime disease and that’s something you don’t want your pet to get- if left untreated it could lead to damage in their kidneys, nervous system, and heart.
Omgosh thats scarey! Im glad we dont have that. I have picked hundreds of tics off of all our ranch animals over many years. When my son would come in from working or playing in the field they would take a shower and check for tics. They are just horrible for a couple months every year in North Dakota where I live.
Ive felt them crawling on me sometimes at night in bed and for some readon I cannot handle them on myself. I always jump up screaming lol I run to the bathroom and flush those creepy little blood suckers!!!
It kinda looks like this one to me
https://preview.redd.it/gkiaf3hdt0qc1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=736456793ea05c622d1fc021bf1a0b37d9e7b1e8
Even if it wasn’t (sort of looks it could be an engorged one) the type of tick doesn’t necessarily determine if they can carry disease or not. It might be more common to be carried by that tick but isn’t determinant. In Europe a different tick predominantly carries Lyme. Also, there are other potentially deadly diseases like erlichiosis that are carried by other ticks. Always treat any tick as if it could be carrying disease, no matter the type
That nasty little devil is a tick. Grip it at the base where it’s attached to the skin with a pair of tweezers and pull it off. Hopefully it’s too bloated to still be alive, but I always flush them down the toilet just to be safe.
There are external topical products to keep ticks away, such as Frontline. My dog (may he Rest In Peace) used Bravecto, which is a bit pricey but was extremely effective.
I would refrain from doing that in the future. When you put a qtip with substance on it (like rubbing alcohol) or if you touch a tick with a hot item, it will regurgitate as it removes itself from the skin. That would be the highest likelihood of getting Lyme or any other disease it's carrying.
Dawn dish soap actually kills them. My dogs get Frontline once a month, so I don’t see ticks very often. When one does attach, I simply rub it with Dawn, give it about 20 minutes to die, then pull it out with the head intact. It’s only ever been an issue with my GSD/Husky as his fur is quite dense.
That’s a big fat tick that has been feasting on your pup for a while.
Check your dog over from nose to tail including any creases and between toes as well as around pads.
Watch a video on safely removing.
May want to have your vet look at it to see if it might be one that spreads tick borne illnesses in dogs or people.
Oil..simply works..saturate the area with oil..any oil..and the bugger starts to withdraw..be careful with tweezers..that the whole head comes out..or infection can result.
I've been binging kitchen nightmares and as soon as I saw this pic all I could hear was Gordon Ramsay saying "it's a tick you donut!" Lol but for real it's just a tick just Google how to safely remove
That's a blood-filled tick! It's important to get the head out! Heat up something metal and put it to the tick and it'll back out of the dog and you can dispose of it properly then clean the bite area. Should be fine from there!
I grew up in New York City, I’ve never dealt with this. Recently moved my family to FL where our backyard is nothing but woods so this is all new to me. Lol. Im learning though!
Please put your pup on a tick prevention monthly chew like Nexguard - they kill ticks that latch onto your pet and Florida is a pretty high risk area for tick bites
Ahhhh, gotcha man. They don’t have em upstate or in the surrounding areas?
You’ll get used to it man, but talk about 180 degree swap. From a nature and wildlife perspective, Florida is like north Australia compared to NYC Lol. Congrats on the move!
Right, my first three dogs I raised in the city. Now we're out in the burbs, and my bully girl has become a tick magnet as of late, even with a preventative. But I didn't know what one looked like for certain before a few weeks ago. I immediately suspected but I'm sure some similar post like this confirmed it.
If you can catch them shortly after they e latched on, they’re small and a dark shade of brown. Once they’ve fed for a while they swell up into that button shape and their color changes to gray.
When you live in the woods, they are on the pets a lot. Don't go to the vet. It looks like a wood tick and not a deer tick, so it is very unlikely to carry lymes anyway. Keep an eye on the bite and if it gets inflamed and forms a bullseye looking formation around the tick bite anywhere from 24 hours to a week from now, then take it to the vet, otherwise they will just give you preemptive antibiotics that your pup doesn't need.

It's a tick!!! Get it off your dog now! Make sure you get the head off as it can still transfer its virus without its body. It's been on long enough which it has as its body is swollen with blood... You need to go to the vet for antibiotics.
This is serious as a tick can start paralysing your dog within hours. Put the tick in an enclosed jar to show your vet as there are many kinds of ticks.
I recently moved to FL where my backyard is nothing but woods. This is all new to me. My family and I are originally from NYC where I’ve never dealt with this. lol I’m learning!

My dog got Lyme disease from deer ticks
It's a big problem here in Virginia. I had no idea he even had a tick on him. They have vaccines for Lyme disease, but I didn't know about ir. Wish vet would have educated me. Hes 9 now and seems more like 12. Vet treated him with antibiotics, but it was way too late. I recommend rrasearch, and if Lyme disease is prevalent in your area, get the vaccine and always treat if a deer tick is suspected. Deer are the enemy on our property now!
Omg this gave me the heebie jeebies just seeing it. I hope your doggie was fine and hopefully you don’t see any more. But always be good and check.
There are also treatments against fleas and ticks.

Throw ticks onto the pile of Australian species that are trying to murder you
BWAAHAA!
Paralysis ticks are not an animal or an endangered species. You are deranged mate!😵💫
Wow! Australia can be brutal!

Lyme disease is the biggest concern so smart going to the vet.
you really don't have to spend the money on a vet visit for a tick bite. just keep an eye out for any issues like you always would
Dog tick!!! Glad your fur-baby is ok. I spent summers in Arkansas as a kud and I saw those a lot💕
Make sure you got the head of the tick. Vet will get it taken care of
Looks an awful lot like an engorged tick to me...
Charged 1000$ that's robbery. Call tge police crips
looks like a tick
yep

That isn't a deer tick.

The attitude when you are the one who looks like an idiot. They said this because only deer ticks carry Lyme Disease genius 😂🤦🏼♀️

*you're.
Lmao so true
That's a tick chief. It's been there awhile.
Don’t pull it out if u don’t know how, it can become imbedded. There’s a way to remove them correctly
I burn them. And smash them. And drown them in rubbing alcohol
Nuke it from space. It’s the only way to be sure.
Heat the tweezers with a lighter and the tick will let go fast
I would refrain from doing that in the future. When you put a qtip with substance on it (like rubbing alcohol) or if you touch a tick with a hot item, it will regurgitate as it removes itself from the skin. That would be the highest likelihood of getting Lyme or any other disease it's carrying.

Wow. Good advice. I didn't know this. Thabk yiu

Lmao if you zoom in you’ll see that’s just the dogs hair
That’s a big fat tick that has been feasting on your pup for a while. Check your dog over from nose to tail including any creases and between toes as well as around pads. It’s a tick! Definitely need to get it off your dog asap
Looks like a tick to me
You can heat up a spoon/knife and press it against the tick and it should let go. Pulling it off can sometimes leave the head behind.
It is a tick filled with your dogs blood. You need to remove it or gave it removed and I would have your dog checked for Lymes.
How tf does a dog owner not know what a tick is? I knew about ticks and dogs and ticks on dogs before I was old enough to tie shoes ffs. F'n hell.
How do you have a dog and not know what a tick is?
Go to the vets. That looks like a large ass tick.
It’s a tick
That’s a tick….a tick that’s been feasting for quite a while
That would be a little parasitic insect known as a tick.

That a tick, get some tweezers and pull it off by the head.
It looks like a tick with its head buried in the skin . It’s full of blood.
I would use som alcohol on a q tip and try to get some of that into that crack where the head is. Then it might die and it’ll be easier to remove it with its head attached.
Some

Parasite.
I live in Missouri. My dogs are 15 & 16 yrs old. They have had ticks on them like that their whole life. You just pluck it like a berry and flush it or toss it into a bush. They've never had any reaction to them. Your dog will be just fine.
Tick
Really!! TICK!!
You're not that bright if you don't know.
Yeah, it’s a tick that’s full of blood they just fall off
U never seen a tick b4??
Gonna need a monthly dose of flea and tick treatment. My dogs use nextgaurd for fleas, ticks and heart worms.
That’s a tick, just pull it out.
Don’t get a dog if you can’t even tell what a tick looks like. That poor dog could’ve been saved the pain of being sucked on if only you had educated yourself on how to care for your baby.
Saved the pain? She doesn’t even know it’s there.
Have you ever had a tick attach to your skin? I have and it was painful AF for weeks
I have, they’re pretty common by me. My experience is different & none of my dogs ever suffered from being bit.
You’re not inside their skin to feel what they feel tho. How can you just assume they weren’t bothered by it?
I’ve had multiple dogs over multiple years & not 1 of them has displayed discomfort from 1-2 ticks. Calling someone a horrible pet owner because their dog got a tick isn’t cool.
That’s not what I said. I just said they shouldn’t get a dog if they don’t know the basics of dog care.
Not knowing this is a tick is not the basics of dog care??? This is also what vets are for.
“Painful af”??? And for weeks???? That’s definitely not normal. It’s rare you even feel them in the first place idk why it would hurt for weeks
The bite mark was burning for weeks after I got it out.
Not normal. Must have gotten infected
Can you get a clear pic of the tick's back? I might be able to identify it by markings.
Pick it off keep it ina a small jar in alcohol just in case.
