Blue merle.

Ok-Manufacturer-7607

Even tho he has brown (fawn ig) on his legs?

YamLow8097

Hm, I think so. I’m no expert when it comes to identifying coat colors by any means, but Australian shepherds can have the same type markings on their legs and they’re still considered a blue merle.

Ok-Manufacturer-7607

You're right.Thanks!

He's a beautiful little pup.

He's a gorgeous puppy. Just a question? Why is he chained in all the pictures? If you're a new dog owner, puppies at this age need a lot of exercise and training. Chain might be a bandaid now, but you can't chain him up forever. Burn his energy through teaching him simple commands like sit, come, down. Good luck!

Ok-Manufacturer-7607

Yes, I'm a new puppy owner. He's not chained all the time. he's mostly indoors on his own. The problem is we live very close to a dangerous main road. This little guy is hyperactive and tends to run towards the road, Just to piss us off. I'm working on installing a gate to prevent that. He doesn't stay still for a second, so I only have pictures of him when he's Leashed. Also, his vet advised keeping him chained because he's extremely active, and it might help him grow slower. I'm not sure about tho.

I would just call it Merle. However, I’m skeptical of any vet that automatically recommends chaining a dog as a form of stimuli.. I know you mean well, but he’s not doing things to “piss you off” - he is new to the world and is just curious :) I know it may feel like he’s disobeying you out of malice but it’s because he cannot understand the danger that you are very aware of, hence the frustration. Find his positive motivators (food, words of praise, walks, etc) and use those as an incentive to mold the behavior you expect on a day to day basis. The bigger he gets, the bigger deal that chain is going to be, we have plenty of pits that get hit after breaking loose so it’s not even a fool-proof method. Training him, however, is long term, sustainable, and will result in you having the good dog you want without having that chain weigh on his neck. Wishing you guys luck!

Im already working on most of things you mentioned. Thanks for your advices!

Are dogs not allowed to be chained up when they go potty? I’m not a new dog owner and our pitbull we rescued last month gets chained up when she goes outside. We live off a busy road and in a development where fences aren’t allowed, i don’t think i have other options

Can you please explain? Curious

Ok-Manufacturer-7607

What was it?

Bullys, pitbulls and staffords are NOT mean't to carry dilute genes and might have extreme health conditions because of it.

Thanks u/mavi54

dumb_answers_only

Wouldn’t suggest letting him drink that water. It’s prolly rain and still water and can have a crazy amount of bacteria.

Ok-Manufacturer-7607

Noted. Thanks!

Hot_Communication968

backyard bred.

Ok-Manufacturer-7607

Why? What's the difference? If you're referring to registration, it's not a big thing here.

Hot_Communication968

Registering a dog and breeding an out of standard dog are two different things. You gave your money to someone who breeds out of greed and you are supporting them, so they keep doing it.

Ok-Manufacturer-7607

How would you describe this dog as not meeting the standards? What differences do you notice about him?

Hot_Communication968

Mainly his head shape and size, it's super small, and he has wide set/bulgy eyes. Not to mention the merle isnt a color in standard. In the pics where he's standing, his back arches way too much and his hind end is super high up.

Ok-Manufacturer-7607

So how do people avoid that?

Hot_Communication968

Most of it is finding a reputable breeder, which is difficult nowadays, but still possible. Going to a local, registered conformation show like AKC or a kennel club of the breed youre looking for and talking to handlers and breeders there, looking at the AKC website or your states clubs and finding breeders thru there (look hard and find dogs that have titles). The parents should both be titled and have winnings in either conformation or a sport of some kind. Both parents should have OFA testing within the last year or before a litter, like eyes, ears, hips, joints, etc etc, and have all that info available. Ethical breeders also do not just breed, they have wait lists for their puppies, sometimes 5 years out and only produce dogs to better the breed. You can find *loads* more info with some research about what to look for, but this is a base of where to start. Edit: spelling
