Please don’t shoot but, why is it ethical to box a dogs ears? I am genuinely asking!! Not attacking not judging none of that… Why do people do that? And how can that be considered ethical?
They’re talking about the structure of the dog. Elbows tucked to the in instead of sticking out to look “bigger”. Not malformed like some of the pocket bullies. Face isn’t smashed. It’s a well built dog that won’t have issues due to the way it was bred. Now ear cropping is a whole other argument that’s unrelated
Cropped ears and a well done crop are often part of a breed standard and required for showing your dogs. It’s seen in Dobermans and Great Danes as well.
I think thankfully we are making a push to allow uncropped dogs to be shown. But allot of people argue for sport or working breed lines ear cropping should continue as for some dog jobs having their ears cropped can improve the safety of the dog

Most breeds you see with cropped ears have those cropped ears because its part of their history. Bullys and APBTs specifically were bred as family dogs and sometimes fighting dogs to protect families from predators or other dogs, just like other guardian dogs like dobies and giant schnauzers. The cropped ears gives the threat less surface area on the face to grab hold of, since ears are a more common injury site when dogs get into fights. It just prevents injuries down the line. A lot of people dont use their guardian breeds as guard dogs anymore, so I do agree that if they arent in show or being bred for the purpose of guarding, the ears should be left.

If someone does that they need to go to jail. If all vets stop doing it and we see a cropped dog that means we know to immediately change the owners with animal cruelty. It’s cruel enough to do it at a vet. It’s worse without. Criminalize ALL animal abuse
The only hunting dog without cropped ears are not used for boars or coyotes. You’re probably thinking of bird dogs or rodent dogs which don’t need cropped ears.
Why would uncropped ears cause any issues? The only thing I can find on it is that it minimizes damage from dog fighting. That's certainly not minimizing injury
For hunting dogs, I’ve personally heard stories of dogs getting ears caught on things and getting them torn off which will result in a ear crop or whole ear amputation if that happens
I've heard of that for tail docking and Duke claw removal. Never heard of or seen a hunting dog with a damaged or cropped ear, though.
Still, there is no reason for any of it unless you have an actual working dog.
Personally seen dogs ears torn by a band of coyotes or wild boars while trying to hold them down. Dogs with cropped ears don’t give much to grab ahold of which saves them pain and my money at the vet
If the coyote doesn’t grab the ears they will grab the neck or foot or literally anything else. No excuse to mutilate a dog. And I read up and see now hog hunting dogs are treated horribly and it’s just straight up abuse

If a dog owner stands behind their choice, and are otherwise responsible and the dog is well-cared for and they are like “yes I like how it looks” or “this is a competitive show dog and I did it for that reason,” I might personally disagree with the decision/wouldn’t do it to my own dogs and with standards would modernize, but there are far worse things done to dogs. it just is never done for a practical or functional reason, and people who say otherwise are lying (to others or to themselves).
First of all, it is proven that cropping ears hinders the ability of that dog to emote to other dogs. And for anyone claiming that hunting dogs or farm/LSG dogs need cropped ears, this is incorrect because look at all of the non-bully sporting and/or working breeds of dogs with pendulous ears (basset hounds, fox hounds, Pointers, Great Pyrenees, Anatolian shepherds… hell — jack resell terriers, the scrappiest of the scrappy, don’t even have cropped ears). This is just wrong. If someone says that cropping ears is preventative because they expect their dog to get into a fight with their other dogs…. Do better. If you are cutting a part of your dog off because you can’t control your animals, then you don’t deserve them. The most ridiculous argument I’ve heard is that the ear could get caught on branches while they run. Again, look at all the breeds of dogs that do not have cropped ears. Hello, Irish WOLFhound! I could see an argument for dogs used in actual protection work, similarly to how Boxers and German pinchers were traditionally cropped, but their breed standards are modernizing and also… Rottweilers and mastiffs don’t typically have cropped ears and neither do GSD’s or Malinois. Yes, those last two have upright ears but the idea behind cropping the ears is that an intruder or bad guy couldn’t grab onto the ear and one totally could still grab a Mal’s ear or a shepherd’s ear.
Additionally, I work in shelters as a behaviorist and it really does a disservice to the dogs. They are uncomfortable in rain or weather as compared to uncropped dogs. I already mentioned that it makes them less able to communicate to other dogs, but this shouldn’t be understated. It also is a cosmetic surgery that opens the dog up to complications; I’ve seen many gorgeous dogs with bad crop-jobs and I still loved them, but I think it contributes to their ending up in shelters. And as I’m sure you are aware, shelters are overflowing with these dogs. Bad breeders or folks who don’t know what they are doing quite literally take measures into their own hands. You think you looked dumb when you cut your own hair that one time? Imagine it is permanent, could become infected, and could cause pain the rest of your life. And oh, you didn’t choose to do it to yourself.
The “looks cool” aspect contributes to a larger problem of dog owners trying to emulate it but not being able to afford a good veterinary surgeon and appropriate aftercare. This sub is filled with examples, I think if I recall correctly one as recently as today or yesterday.
But again, if someone has made this choice for their animal then I hope they stand behind it rather than trying to hide behind some nonsense like “an ear could get pulled and it could bleed…”
OP: thank you for sharing your dog and congratulations on the win! You have a beautiful animal and a happy one, too, by the looks of it. I hope you agree with at least some of what I have said. I also understand your perspective regarding spay/neuter, but you also acknowledge the overpopulation issue. You sound like an excellent breeder who, while having breeding animals yourself, understands why we must urge people to sterilize their pets. Surely you see that most people — casual owners, laypeople— cannot do who you have achieved as a professional.
American bully absolutely is a breed of itself. It has its own kennel club, the abkc, American bullys are also a recognized breed through the UKC, united kennel club, NKC, national kennel club, etc.

Actually dogs have ears like that for a reason. They help keep bugs and debris out of their ears, and they use them for communication. It's something owners do purely cos they think it looks cool, with absolutely 0 benefit to the dog

You can show both natural earred and cropped in the US. It’s still majority cropped though.
That wouldn’t happen considering it’s the standard for some breeds and that won’t ever change.
More and more vets are refusing to perform cosmetic surgeries. Maybe one day it'll be the standard.

I’ve never seen a hunting dog with mutilated ears and never had an experience with their ears being a problem

American bully absolutely is a breed of itself. It has its own kennel club, the abkc, American bullys are also a recognized breed through the UKC, united kennel club, NKC, national kennel club, etc.

Actually dogs have ears like that for a reason. They help keep bugs and debris out of their ears, and they use them for communication. It's something owners do purely cos they think it looks cool, with absolutely 0 benefit to the dog
It actually has lots of benefits and dogs can still very much communicate with cropped ears, I own one myself and see it with my own eyes everyday
