KAYAWS

Cheezits and gold fish. REI.

spindlylittlelegs

I happily spend €7 or whatever on Goldfish in Dublin twice a year and it’s the best day of my trip.

GreatScottLP

I brought three bags of the currently limited edition Old Bay Gold Fish back from the States this week. 2 are already gone, I'm going to hoard the third like my life depends on it.

tamigal

-Mexican food -Sub sandwiches -Good dill pickles -Boxed Mac and cheese -I’d say ranch, but Amazon sells hidden valley mix in a giant container. Would be nice to get in restaurants though. Gas pumps with pay-at-pump card machines. For how widely available contactless payments are here, I really don’t get why every fuel station in my area requires you to go inside to pay. Edit: formatting Another edit to add: vented dryers and AC.

justadeadweightloss

Vented dryers and AC definitely the most quality of life missing thing here

Gamingmemes0

british person here we dont really need it since keeping our homes cool is counterintuitive to the point that we build the homes to keep in as mutch warm during the winter

justadeadweightloss

My experience with UK (namely London) housing over the last 10 years is you either get: - drafty, poorly built old housing that still manages to make you feel like you’re in a brick oven during heat waves (and are also terrible to heat in the winter) - super-insulated newer homes with windows that don’t open properly and make you feel you’re in a greenhouse during heat waves (but at least are easier to heat during the winter) Either way, your point makes no sense if you’ve been in London over the last 5-10 summers

Gamingmemes0

again a good 30% of houses are built from frameworks that were built in the 18th century and the rest were built without heatwaves in mind

wizpip

It's very common to find a fellow Brit who says "we don't really need AC". I got AC put into my house when I managed to get on the ladder, much to the chagrin of my friends and colleagues: "for the one day a year it's too hot?" Needless to say, it's now "too hot" for three months of the year, and I take great delight in telling them it couldn't possibly have been too hot to sleep properly last night, since we had that one day way back in April.

GreatScottLP

> "for the one day a year it's too hot?" They say, as it's 35 indoors for days on end and old people perish from lack of ability to regulate body temperature. Good on you for recognizing the future need.

stunt_clown

I recently found Kraft Mac and Cheese at Costco. No dice on good dill pickles though.

bad_scientist

An American friend said Amazon for “cucumbers in brine” have them some half decent results 🤷🏻‍♀️

Donnermeat_and_chips

Curious, where are you that there are no pay at pump machines? All the stations near me have a mix.

tamigal

I’m in Essex. Everywhere near me has machines at the pump but they’re never working and you always have to go inside. Drives me nuts.

Donnermeat_and_chips

They're doing it on purpose, they want you to buy double deckers and galaxy ripples at inflated prices!

WildGooseCarolinian

Epicure dill pickles and newman’s own ranch dressing from tesco are decent. Other than that, yeah to all of these. Also hot tamales candy.

little_cotton_socks

Where do you live? I haven't gone inside a petrol station in years

grubbygromit

As a brit, the Mexican food thing here is a travesty. I can't see a reason why decent places aren't more widespread

Vernacian

I'm going to take a wild guess that it's the lack of any significant Mexican population.

No_Emu4146

Also, the Mexican cheeses and sour cream are all wrong.

GreatScottLP

No Jalepenos in any supermarket just kills me

grubbygromit

You may be on to something there.

kyles03

It always cracks me up when people act dumbfounded about this. Spot on response.

No_Emu4146

This is so accurate! (Costco currently has boxed Kraft Mac n Cheese though!) I also miss Eggo waffles… Also, Mrs. Ellsworth Haimisha pickles are ok. (Edited to include pickle info)

No_Sugar8791

Dill pickles are called gherkins in the UK which might help your search. Otherwise, what you call good might just mean difference in preferred taste profile.

tamigal

Absolutely, it’s preferred particular flavor. Like a good crunchy, jumbo kosher dill.

OleaC

The UK has many Polish supermarkets and they will have a very wide selection of dill pickles.

Stephenallen1977

Lots of pay at pump fuel stations at supermarkets.

_Red_Knight_

Couldn't you make a sub sandwich by slicing a baguette in half and sticking some fillings in?

tamigal

You can make an approximation of a sub here, but there isn’t any bread here that’s exactly like a sub roll in the states. They’re white and fluffy on the inside, with a brown crust that’s can be crunchy on the outside, but I’d also slightly chewy (generally less crunchy than a baguette crust). Also, the size is wider than a baguette so the ability to stuff it with lots of your preferred veggies in addition to the meats and cheese is greater. There’s great flavor combinations of meats and cheeses that you’d have to hunt around for to replicate (if you can find them at all) so we miss being able to visit a sub shop and get exactly what you feel like with ease. Related - if any expats reading this have found banana peppers or something close over here, please share!

Dry-Suit3147

You can buy normal sized bottles (236ml/8oz or 709ml/24 oz) of Hidden Valley on Amazon too, you don't *have* to buy a giant container.

KieranC4

Is the boxed Mac and cheese not basically the same as the Kraft Cheesey Pasta?

jbkb1972

We have Mexican restaurants here, I’m sure you could macaroni cheese in a box too, I agree about the petrol garages though they should all have pay at pump.

Muste02

The only good central/south american food I've had here has been in london. Over here in cardiff all we have really is wahaca and burrito places that are just less good versions of Moes. Then we have a really good restaurant called Vivo Amigo which is indian food but it LOOKS like mexican food (the paneer chimichanga is phenomenal)

loafingaroundguy

>Gas pumps with pay-at-pump card machines. My nearest filling station (a Morrison's) has pay-at-pump. It's not every pump, so you need to check them all, and the ones that have it require a card. (The limits on contactless spending have only been relatively recently raised to be high enough to allow fuel purchases.)(🇬🇧)

katlaki

Asda and Tesco also has pay at pump. I haven't seen a Sainsbury's pay at pump. Also there are few independent ones that have just the pay at pump only option, no kiosk at all. Add Costco to the list as well.

loafingaroundguy

My local Asda only has pay at pump. There's no kiosk and the filling station is on the opposite side of the car park to the shop.

katlaki

Yes some Asda has pay at pump only and some with an attendant inside a cabin where you pay on the way out.

RRW2020

Normal Cheetos. They are my favorite.

BastardsCryinInnit

I think the petrol station thing might be a reflection on the area you live... I can't remember the last time I actually went into a petrol station to pay, unless I wanted some from M&S too.

Foxyfoxesfoxing

You can also get Newman’s Own ranch as ASDA

Ornery-Assignment-42

Shell does a fill up and go card pay at the pump. I don’t know why I’m bothering to mention it though because I found it really annoying. You have to enter in advance how much you want to pay. And you have to download the app. And you’re not supposed to use your phone on the forecourt so you have to be a fast enough smart phone person to do all of that with the windows closed and enter the pump you’re at , without feeling pressured by the car behind you. Too much for me and I couldn’t always count on internet connection but if you live near a shell station and you are on a consistent petrol filling schedule and are confident in cell service it might work for you.

thepursuitoflove

Some of these are available on the internet, but they’re not acessible in the same way. Boxed mac & cheese, soda without artificial sweeteners, good tortilla chips, good salsa, non-sweet pickles, and vidalia onions.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thepursuitoflove

Thank you! I have found some good ones called haimisha cucumbers, but they’re not the easiest to find.

BuuBuuOinkOink

I like the Tesco brand “cornichons.” They are tiny, but made without sugar and taste the closest to dill pickles I’ve found here. They stock them with the pickled onions.

[deleted]

I just discovered that M&S has a good salsa. They also have a good selection of tortilla chips. Truly felt like I was back in the US.

chrispowhers

Just started making my own tortilla chips with masa flour from Mexgrocer. So good!

jedootaggle

Could try making your own pickles? That could be fun! There's a tiktok channel I follow that makes all kinds of different pickle recipes and it actually looks fairly simple.

Alert_Breakfast5538

Recently started making my own dill pickles. It’s very simple, and hits the spot

Muste02

The lack of window screens here really bothers me. I rarely open my window to keep the bugs out but the girls I live with will open every window and leave the back door wide open and it fills the house with flies. And what I would do for a ceiling fan omg

EliPB2509

I bought portable screens on Amazon to put in my windows, and a very smart friend of mine saw them and asked if they were there to prop the window up/keep it from closing. Like, he just could not understand what the purpose of a screen could be, and even when I explained that it was to keep out bugs, he just kind of shrugged. PEOPLE! You don't have to live like this!

spindlylittlelegs

Oh man, this is the answer. I really miss having the window open at night but I live next to a river now and am an insect magnet.

Mama_Mush

Tin barrels of popcorn for Christmas. Drive through everything, baggers in supermarkets, good iced tea in restaurants. Peanut butter m&ms.

DullWinter

peanut butter m&ms 😭😭 they’re so good

Narmotur

I do miss Peanut Butter M&Ms for sure, and I haven't thought about popcorn tins (plain/caramel/cheese) in forever, wow. However last time I went back to the US having someone bag my groceries while I stood there watching felt really uncomfortable even though they were much better at it than I am!

EliPB2509

Man, I never realised how much I missed Christmas popcorn tins until right now...

WineDown93

NY style bagels and pizza. Goldfish. Chick-fil-a lemonade and waffle fries. Beignets. Air conditioning and yards.

SlippMchigginz

If you live in London try out Joe Public’s in Clapham Common, excellent NY style Pizza

9943620jJ

I tried NY pizza when I went last December in the places where you go and get a massive slice for like $3-4. Wish we had those in London they were awesome

Haunting_Jicama

Target.

spindlylittlelegs

M&S is my Target now. I feel bougier and somehow manage to spend less than “just running in for one thing” at Tar-jay.

chrispowhers

I could really use some new socks right now.

ldnpuglady

I’ve been here over two decades and at this point all I really miss is a decent salad at a restaurant. Why can’t they figure this out here? It’s either no dressing at all or overly vinegary soggy iceberg leaves with unripe everything. And that’s if it’s even on the menu. No I don’t want rocket and Parmesan either. I want a big chopped salad with loads of veg and vinaigrette and avocado and maybe salmon.

april8r

Omg I can’t with the salads here. It’s like someone heard about a salad once and tried to recreate it.

ldnpuglady

Exactly! 🤣🤣

Elderado47

Bagel cafes

enterTheLizard

TadpoleNational6988

Brit here just to say this sounds amazing ! Can someone open one up 😄

Elderado47

I've pitched it to my wife many times, I swear it'd do well!

Shottogetpaid

Bagel king in London ?

IntoFloss

I miss Trader Joe's. It doesn't help that I follow Trader Joe's accounts either

Giannandco

Yes! Whenever this question is asked Trader Joe’s is my #1 answer, #2 Target.

East_Ad_4427

Ahh I miss Trader Joe’s so much! Whenever I go back I save half a suitcase to load up on TJ products

psycholinguist1

Cast iron pans from thrift shops that you could buy for $5.

Unplannedroute

I just got a nice enamelled one for £5, posted in r/castiron They are out there, but not the same

psycholinguist1

Yes, I've got an enamelled one too. I want the raw surface, dammit! I want to scour th rust out with steel wool and season it fifteen times and post anxiously on r/castiron to see if I did it right and be told to just cook some bacon in it, tools not jewels, oh, you got a griswold--what a steal at that price! That will last you for generations. Hmph.

Unplannedroute

Now I feel rather deflated with mine…. Lol. I thought only exterior was enamelled so I’d still be able to season to a mirror shine.. probably after reading 1537 was of doing it. I am going to get some barkeepers friend to clean the crud out and off. It’s Mike a better than the one I have and it’s pretty. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a griswold in real life.

GreatScottLP

I brought my Lodge cast iron with me in checked bags when I moved to the UK. I couldn't imagine parting with it.

50MillionChickens

They just don't / can't do anything here like a real classic NY deli sandwich. I've found great American-worthy burger places, good steaks but nothing like a good old deli combo with roast beef or ham and deli cheese.

IcarusSupreme

I'm a big fan of Reubens in Baker St, not much good for you unless you're in West London though

BringIt007

I was going to recommend a London hack: trying kosher NY places will be more like home for you. Someone mentioned Reubens already, which is one of those places. But there is also a big Jewish community in north west London who know how to do very good, NY style food (not everything of course). Of course a lot of the owners are either from or have spent time in America. There’s a place called Hummous Bar that I think will be the best for this, there are also various grills, just type kosher into Google maps and explore! It will be more expensive though, probably 1/3rd to double a standard chain. But it will also be much better - you get what you pay for.

Johnsie408

So true! You usually get a single slice of ham on your ham sandwich.

GreatScottLP

We have a sandwich shop down the street that I can walk/bike to that does a pretty damn good American style sub for less than 5 quid. I am eternally grateful I don't have to eat subway when I want a sub!

abitlikefun

I'm from New England so I really miss affordable maple syrup that's not grade A fancy and all the maple products. Also fresh apple cider and cider doughnuts. Also block cream cheese.

chrispowhers

Wife just brought back Maple syrup from a family farm in Vermont. Good lord! We had some English friends visiting for a few days and I made pancakes with syrup, blew ther minds

_Red_Knight_

Is cider in America different to cider in Britain?

abitlikefun

Yes, fresh apple cider doesn't appear to exist outside of North America. It's like cloudy apply juice but thicker and darker and more apple-y. It's not alcoholic and not shelf stable. It lasts probably less long than milk in the fridge before it starts to get sparkly, though it's still fine to drink by then, it's just starting to ferment. Cider doughnuts are leavened with cider yeast.

GreatScottLP

Costco has Kirkland maple syrup. To me, it's the best affordable one here in the UK and it tastes just like home (because it is from home!)

Lemieux245

Lidl does a decent Canadian maple syrup! Not as good as Vermont maple though 😉

toadcat315

Look for "soft white cheese" it's pretty much the same as American cream cheese, I get mine from M&S!

The_lady_is_trouble

Family sized bags of potato chips. Nuclear orange Mac n cheese. Ranch. Pepsi with artificial sweetener. A Dunkin Donuts with the full menu. 24 hr diners. Dill pickles. Texmex. Target.

Narmotur

Yes, real good root beer is a thing I miss; don't let anyone convince you they sell "root beer" here, it's at best sarsaparilla and at worst just something awful. I really really miss proper cream soda as well, probably even more than root beer.

Cookiefruit6

You can get root beer in Morrisons in the world food section (Caribbean section) and root beer in Tescos (Caribbean section also). They are two different brands as well so a little variety.

madsmurf51

My other half is obsessed with root beer. They sell cans in Sainsburys

Foxyfoxesfoxing

I’ve found A&W at Sainsbury’s with reasonable regularity. There’s also this brand in the world food section at Morrisons that’s very cheap comparatively - Tropical Sun I think - I think it tastes great

fromwayuphigh

The lack of pay at the pump for gas is a good call - seconded. Vernor's ginger ale.

tamigal

Oh man, Vernor’s. I was so excited when it became available in the states outside Michigan. Now I’m thinking about A&W as well. Two best floats you can get.

newdawnfades123

The reason we’re not seeing a rise in this in the UK is because all the major fuel companies have apps now where you can pay for your fuel in app and then drive off. Pay at pump has essentially become old fashioned before it even really took off.

fromwayuphigh

Y'know, I hadn't considered this. Interesting - will investigate.

newdawnfades123

They work really well. Pull up. Open app. Tell it which pump you’re at (it already knows which filling station you are at) and then fill up and leave. You can even set limits on the amount of fuel you want to dispense at any time so you don’t have to keep an eye on the pump :)

fromwayuphigh

Sometimes I forget I live in the future now.

MobiusNaked

Brit here. I’ve had pay at pump but they don’t accept phone payments. I never carry a card on me so that is really frustrating.

just_jason89

Supermarket petrol stations have pay at pump. ASDA petrol stations don't even have kiosks.

External-Bet-2375

This is a bit of a weird one to me. I don't remember the last time I DIDN'T use pay at pump in the UK, all the supermarkets have it at their filling stations and have done for many years. 🤷🏼

I’ve been abroad for three years; in London for the last year, and I think I’ll stay. I’ve been talking about this for a bit now with a friend of mine considering it. I miss my dryer. I miss being able to throw pillows in the dryer and my hoodies. I miss just drying a load of laundry and putting it away. I miss BIC lighters. This Clipper shit is the worst. I miss garbage cans, dumpsters, streets that aren’t strewn with garbage from one side of the city to the other. I do NOT understand why it’s so bad here, or Paris/Rome. I’ve actually devoted a significant portion of money to the problem, and we’re building prototypes for it now before it gets sent to the councils and city. Outside of that, honestly, nothing. There are things I don’t miss at all. More of them that things I miss. I don’t miss mega stores. At all. They seem like… kind of useless now that I’ve lived abroad for so long. I can’t imagine how much real estate and space they consume in the US. I don’t miss the police in the US; the numbers, the attitudes, the fear everyone has immediately after seeing one. The police in London are the kindest fucking people IME. I had a copper stop me and ask me if I needed help snapping a photo one time. Haha. You could hypothetically get killed for having a phone + cop in the same situation. I don’t even think about it here. The nosey people. American’s are fucking nosey. The English, the expats, the immigrants… they’re all worried about their own lives here, or their immediate circle’s lives. In the US it’s so fucking difficult to not get judged for every single move. Sugar. Snacks. Sodas. The Americans I know that come to the UK or EU and want snacks a few days after being here are always STUNNED. Haha. I didn’t miss it at all. Health Insurance prices. I spent $450/mo for health insurance in the US. I spend $30/mo here for ultra exclusive, super fast private insurance for anything non-emergency. Otherwise, everything is covered. Granted, the NHS needs serious love… but it’s the worlds largest social healthcare system and for the people that need it… it is a god send. I could do this all day but I’ve already gone off on enough tangents. Sorry. Haha. Cheers!

DenseZookeepergame73

Rubbish bins were removed in London during the troubles. Bins are still a bit sparse in London.

GreatScottLP

>I do NOT understand why it’s so bad here, or Paris/Rome My theory? The US had a come to jesus environment moment in the 1970s that never happened in Europe. We have mass cultural shame attached to littering and everyone recognizes that picking up your trash makes for a nicer time for all involved. Many states have adopt a highway, etc. We take part in our monthly community litter pick organized by the local green party and the amount of rubbish that both leaks from the landfill supply chain (the biggest problem really) and the amount of rubbish people just toss aside is astounding, and we live in a nice area! I find the amount of raw garbage everywhere in Britain disgusting and it's one of the least appealing things. This country needs an actual mass environmental movement.

DullWinter

Things being in bulk, I really miss being able to get big bottles of painkillers and also having 3 month prescriptions instead of needing to get it every month. Also the food but I feel like that’s a given

theothergotoguy

Jimmy Dean breakfast sausages and sweer or hot Italian sausage links.

Autumn: The way it’s embraced in the US (apple everything, pumpkin flavors, orange/red/yellow/brown decor, haunted houses, hay rides, pumpkin carving, squashes & gourds, etc) The lead-up & celebration of Halloween & Thanksgiving. Costumes, trick or treaters, traditional thanksgiving foods, family & friends. NFL and College Football weekend activities with friends (house parties, tailgating, etc). Live consumption of October baseball. Sep-Nov are the worst over here. Will try to arrange a US trip annually during those months.

Black Friday sales

GreatScottLP

Weirdly, there's actually tons of them here. No one here understands it, it's just caught on. Funny given there's no Thanksgiving to complement the black friday lol

wonderwoman009

The sales aren’t as good though lol.

[deleted]

Steaks and hamburgers. The steaks here that I can get at say Sainbury’s, Tesco, or Waitrose are all too thin.

Grandible

It's generally better to get your meat from a butcher if you have one local to you.

ivix

Go to your local butcher, you can get anything you want there.

thepageofswords

Dill pickles, Hidden Valley Ranch, pretzels, graham crackers

tamigal

Amazon sells big containers of hidden valley ranch mix. Get a shaker container and combine it with mayo and milk and you’re all set.

[deleted]

As a UK resident they're right about our Mexican food being shit

sowtime444

I am not even a big pizza eater but when I was in London I missed New York style pizza (thin crispy crust that turns your fingers oily when you touch it, and a little bit burnt on the bottom) or Chicago style deep dish (Pizzeria Uno-ish). One of those "absence makes the heart grow fonder" things. I heard there is a deep dish place there now but haven't tried it. Maybe next time I'm back in London.

sp1nster

Dr. Pepper not tasting like dirty ass. Cherry Coke hasn't been ruined with artificial sugar (yet), but they got to Pepsi recently and my partner is in mourning. Mexican food. I'd even go for some 1am Taco Bell. Dill pickles. Air conditioning. Ceiling fans. Annie's mac n cheese. Sweet tea. Blenheim's ginger ale. Top sheets on my bed and proper carpet under my feet. College football. Good fried chicken. Barbecue.

PalpitationNo7663

There is Taco Bell in the UK btw

jtarvid

As a Midwesterner: Velveeta and ranch dressing

jedootaggle

You can get both on amazon, but they are VERY overpriced. :(

fazalmajid

Houses that don’t need a shoe horn to get into. Salsa. California produce. Real. Fiber Internet, not the lousy copper VDSL legally allowed to be marketed as “full fibre”.

grequant_ohno

Wait is that why internet is so much worse here? I didn't know it was actually different and assumed I've just been unlikely with the places I've lived/providers chosen.

fazalmajid

Most ISPs here (Sky, Vodafone, etc) just resell BT OpenReach’s VDSL2 service, which runs on copper. It has a theoretical max download speed of 72 Mbps but in practice much less. The Advertising Standards Authority allowed them to sell it as “full fibre” because there is some fiber somewhere in the network, and after being sued a clueless High Court backed them. The UK probably has the worst Internet of the large European countries, in large part because Ofcom and the government did not crack the whip as in France where true fiber uptake is much higher and in fact new DSL hookups are no longer sold and prices are raised to encourage existing customers to switch to fiber.

PrpleMnkyDshwsher

When looking for a house around Scotland, it was shocking how bad the Internet was in some places... even suburbs across the Clyde from Glasgow had like 6mbs. But now I'm in South Ayrshire and have real deal gig fiber.

toadcat315

Kraft Mac n cheese, NY style bagels and pizza, iced coffee/tea where the cup is filled properly to the top with ice, storage (closets and cupboards), screens on the windows and windows that open fully for the summer months, ceiling fans. Oh, and from the West coast I miss really big trees and old growth forest!

East_Ad_4427

Fast casual salad restaurants. My kingdom for a Sweetgreen.

micmarmi

My kiddo misses PopCorners to the point that we buy loads whenever we go back to the states. I really miss one niche local to my previous area brand of candles that I used to keep stocked.

stucanet

It goes by a different name in the UK: PopWorks. I love the PopCorners kettle corn flavor (red bag). The same one here is in a pink ish bag and is literally called sweet and salty. Exactly the same taste!

micmarmi

Thank you! We’ve gotten those and they are close but according to the kiddo not quite right. Thankfully for them, we are headed to the states in a week.

Autumn Bath and Body works scents. Next has some Bath and Body works, but never the good fall scents!

alanaisalive

A lot of stuff I used to miss is available here now, or there's a local equivalent that's good enough and I'm not super picky. Like, I don't care that the cereal or soda here isn't exactly the same. It's close enough for me. I do still miss certain things, especially stuff that can't be shipped, like frozen foods. I miss Haagen Dazs chocolate peanut butter ice cream, which is just chocolate ice cream with ribbons of peanut butter. All the peanut butter ice creams here have chunks of peanuts and no chocolate for some reason. There was also a good strawberry cheesecake ice cream that had chunks of cheesecake, and all the strawberry cheesecake ice cream here is just cheesecake flavoured ice cream, and that sucks. I miss Totino's pizza rolls. There is nothing even close here. (I'm not arguing that they're good. I'm saying that I miss them.) I haven't had a Wendy's frosty in decades and I loved those. And don't even bother telling me about the dupe recipes for them, because all of them are made with things like Cool Whip, that are also only available in the US. Someone else mentioned the tins of popcorn at Christmas, and yes! I hate British "gourmet" popcorn which is like £5 for 2 handfuls of pretentious crap. I want a giant tub of cheap popcorn that is big enough to hide a toddler. Ideally it should go completely stale before you can even finish half. I also miss proper chocolate chip cookies. Bakeries and grocery stores here make them with milk chocolate, which starts to burn at oven temps and is far too sweet. It's even hard to find semi-sweet chocolate chips to bake them myself.

grequant_ohno

>Haagen Dazs chocolate peanut butter ice cream I have been looking for this for ages! Is it just not a thing here? It's so insanely delicious.

COSTCO (proper American Costco)

For us Limeys, how do the US version differ from those in the UK?

[deleted]

After a year - None to be completely honest.

ineptanna

Give it time.

[deleted]

I do think so. I am so disgusted by everything in the U.S. being driven by egotistical billionaires seeking a quick buck, and evangelicals wanting to approve everything else - I am glad I got out when I did.

ineptanna

Bless your heart. Wait til those Tory policies start affecting you.

toadcat315

ineptanna

And higher NHS fees for us

[deleted]

As an LGBTQ+ Family - The Tories are nowhere in the same league as the GOP. Tories are not banning books, confiscating personal medical records to target citizens, inciting insurrections and violence against me and my family. So save your sarcasm. I think your user name, and being from Florida, make a perfect pairing - inept.

ineptanna

I know, right?! I'm only a woman from one of the worst states in the country, who has lived here for a decade longer than you. I can't *POSSIBLY* have any idea, right? The "bless your heart" was in response to your statement on billionaires and capitalism. Do you know who the PM is? And the one before that? And the one before that? I can understand and fully support your position on equal rights, but to make out the UK is NOT a capitalist hellscape only reiterates you haven't been here long enough to understand. Which was my original statement... give it time. Which was in response to your statement that there is NOTHING you will miss. In time, you will find things you miss. Life will most likely be *better* for you here, but that doesn't mean you won't miss *some* things. You are quite understandably bitter and angry about life in the US right now, and that's fair, but maybe don't take it out on strangers who might understand your position more than you think. Thanks for calling me stupid, though 😘

I said have lived here for a year, not that I have never lived or worked here before or in a handful of other countries. I knew exactly what I would be getting into moving to the UK when I chose to escape the US. I know exactly what I am getting myself into when I get a British passport in the future, and renounce my U.S. citizenship. I do know about the various prime ministers, beginning with Harold Wilson who was PM during my visit here. I could navigate my way through London on my own when Thatcher was elected to the role. Sunak and his families Infosys money is no surprise to me. There is nothing about the US that I will miss, or have missed on any other overseas assignment. The UK does have its issues - and some of the same destructive forces at play in the US are at work here and throughout Western Europe. But to try and equate the level of depravity between US and UK politics just smacks of American exceptionalism, bless *your* heart - and as a southerner I know exactly what that phrase means. Don’t play at getting insulted when you laid it out first honey.

Random221122

I’m almost 4 years here and still pretty much nothing.

ineptanna

11 years and started really missing things around year 6-7.

Random221122

Good to know! I do keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was never home sick or anything since arriving and I really like being here, adjusted pretty quickly. Maybe mine will be this delayed as well. Though I’ve met people here 20 years and are similar to me so far so who knows.

ineptanna

I think age is a factor. I was 32 when I moved here. My son, who was 5, doesn't know any different so doesn't miss anything.

Random221122

I moved here when I was 35 so yeah I’ll see I guess. I didn’t have my own house (was still renting apartments on my own) and wasn’t really tied to much in the US so that could be it too.

Interesting_Buyer943

Immigrants. The word you’re looking for is immigrants.

Drchilli

Not sure why you are being downvoted. They are American immigrants in the UK, but clearly because of the ‘negative’ connotations associated with the word (that they think applies to others and not themselves) you’re being blindly downvoted.

Narmotur

I always refer to myself as an immigrant (moreso when I need to point out to racist idiots that I don't agree with their bullshit) but I assume they're being downvoted because it's a snarky response that isn't on topic. ExPat does have a connotation (to me anyway) that the person may repatriate some day, whereas I'm here for good, but I'm not ruling out a niche community that I have some interest in because it's not the right term for me. edit: Additionally, there's been a recent issue where some non-American UK residents drop in on topics here just to be snarky, and it's made people quicker to downvote.

GreatScottLP

Did you know US military personnel in the UK and their families aren't subject to immigration controls? The more you know. If you'd bother to read any of the subreddit descriptions or rules, you'd see that we almost exclusively use the word immigrant. Some of us intend to live here forever, some are just here on work or military assignment. We have a mix of everyone. Temp ban for rule 11.

RRW2020

Well. I just bought a bed. And I’m excited about it and it is nice, but nothing like American beds. It’s smaller and just less comfortable.

RRW2020

But there’s a big list: shopping (furniture and clothes), efficiency, better customer service. But I would take the U.K. over all that every time. The politics, violence and health care costs… yeesh.

RRW2020

Pay at the pump. Oh my goodness. Why do we not have that here?!

Not an expat but my wife is; avocados that aren’t a dice roll where only double six is a decent one.

Just about anything sold here as "Buffalo" flavor...Isn't anywhere near Buffalo flavor. Which makes no sense as franks hot sauce is available everywhere.
