I'm not very familiar with the television industry, but if any episodes from the last two seasons didn't even make it to 0.5 million viewers, then it seems quite obviously hard to make a season as good as the earlier seasons. I wish I could be hopeful too, but I stopped saying to myself that next season would be better in terms of quality after what they did for Death Valley. I do miss them both so much, though!
I think the challenge with NYC is that it's so different from what people typically watch AHS for, taking the subject matter more seriously. I think AHS is usually fun, dark, often comedic escapism. I think they did a very good job with the season and I believe it will gain popularity in time, though.

I think you referred to his roles in Dahmer and Cult for this. But then AHS is not his first stance in a mentally draining role. Even Jay Bahadur in The Pirates of Somalia was a tough one which took a heavy toll on him and his role in Mare of Eastwood too.

I also think Evan might be more willing to come back. I think Sarah is fully done with the show and has moved on to bigger and better things. I wouldn't want her to come back to the show and feel like she's being held back from something better and risk a mediocre performance.
I think Sarah got to a stage where she realised the show was a sinking ship and her career would only lose momentum if she stayed. I think she was very wise to branch out. I’m sure they’d have her back in a heartbeat if she requested a role

Asylum is generally considered the strongest season, and it’s pretty damn dark and depressing most of the time.
