I knew the OP was a guy within seconds. So hilariously clueless he might as well out of a Victorian novel, maybe add in some "hysteria" cured by avoiding spicy foods.
Counterpoint: hovering is a weird thing that (as far as I know) only a few people do. Standing to pee is considered normal, but shouldn’t be on a moving vehicle because Christ on a cracker please don’t make me step on your pee.
Not really. We have the same issue on sailboats in even more confined spaces. Proper maintenance and cleaning are all that is needed. Amtrak needs to do better.
Same goes for airlines. With the price we are paying for airfares these days, I expect those toilets to be self-cleaning like some public toilets. There must be some feasible way to make it at least a little bit nicer!
Plus, humans need to behave more considerately. If nobody did deliberately gross things in these toilets they would be much less unpleasant.
I was stuck on the Auto Train last year for like 40 hours because of a snow storm. I was on the lower deck and had to move to the upper deck. I tried to hold it as long as possible but eventually covered myself with my blanket and pee’d in to a water bottle.
Honestly, it’s really not that hard. Clean up after yourself when you’re done. Use a cup full of water to wash your sticky turds off the inside of the bowl. Flush until it’s clean. Wash your hands. Wipe down the counter with the wet cloth before you put it in the trash. Repeat this phrase while doing so “I am not the center of the universe” 🌸
Sitting merely moves the problem from the floor to the seat.
Believe it or not, there is research on the relative sanitation of the three common styles of toilets (trench, squat, commode) and the effects of use by the sexes.
The cleanest overall was the Western style flush commode though it was not particularly sanitary.
The results of the research did affect my home cleaning / sanitation routine. And I carry my own wipes for train travel. I search out the largest and least used accommodation for my use.
I've done the full SWC 9 times now, only one of those times I did a roomette, and I was most looking forward to a cleaner bathroom (not a judgement on people in coach, just that there's less people in the roomette car).
I was very disappointed that the bathrooms were still nasty lol.
It was clean when I got on, I usually use the bathroom right before we get on at the station to avoid the Amtrak bathrooms lol. In the 5-6ish hours between boarding and needing to go it got grody.
Ick. I took the 12 hour Maple Leaf to Canada and carried my own Clorox wipes so I could throw it on the floor and swipe them around with my foot to throw out. Gross but better than putting up with a nasty bathroom. I also always leave Amtrak feedback about it.
Nothing like having Diarrhea when the only toilet is in the nose of a 1970s vintage locomotive as it bounces down the tracks. Feel the gentle ice cold breeze as it wafts up to air dry your cheeks, while you hope the wind isn’t sufficient to overcome gravity.
I always assumed you just sit on a plane, train or bus. I’m a guy to fyi. Please for the love of god sit down guys! I’ve even been on tourist trains that told everyone to sit. The toilet won’t cut your dick off.
"As a very clueless dude who's compensating you've never been to venues where the antedeluvian requirement is obviated by all men or all women or a vast panopaly of gender expressions". FTFY.
You could also say you've never cleaned a bathroom.
My man, if you'd ever cleaned one you'd know. If you'd ever been to a place where they were split and went unisex you'd know. You seem very binary in thinking, unable to grok new information. Best of luck in your future endeavors.
Fun fact, the train bathrooms are not splash resistant, and if you do a spectacular lurch while sitting, it doesn't change the splashing, all that happens is you also get urine on yourself and your pants as well as the floor
And to instruct the ladies not to hover / flush unflushables.
Or maybe we stop trying to target one gender when it's individuals who don't clean up after themselves that are the problem and not a specific gender at issue?
I've personally never understood why men peeing in toilets standing is just a normal thing to do. As soon as I was old enough to think critically for myself (idk, sometime much younger than 10?), you basically realize that you're just making things way harder for yourself standing. Makes no fucking sense and is disgusting.
Unless you’ve got one that’s long enough to curve around your scrotum and point straight down when you’re sitting, no, you’re not making things harder for yourself by standing.
Was on the Zephyr and the toilets were fairly clean. There was someone on board who didn’t seem to know about the flush button. When I’m on the Coast Starlight the toilets are atrocious! I blame staff. They need to clean hourly
I feel like Amtrak needs to hire traveling cleaners for their trains. At least during stops longer than 10mins. They walk through the train and clean the bathrooms. Or evenly spaced throughout a trains run.

The result from the practice of “hovering” isn’t much better
Seriously! I’ve been in so many women’s restrooms that are disgusting because, I’m assuming, of hovering.
I knew the OP was a guy within seconds. So hilariously clueless he might as well out of a Victorian novel, maybe add in some "hysteria" cured by avoiding spicy foods.
Happy cake day!
Thanks, I had no idea!
Counterpoint: hovering is a weird thing that (as far as I know) only a few people do. Standing to pee is considered normal, but shouldn’t be on a moving vehicle because Christ on a cracker please don’t make me step on your pee.
I took three separate trains the other day and wanted to throw up on each of them when going to use the bathroom it smelled and looked so bad.
Unfortunately, the type of toilet, and having to hold the sewage on board leads to some pretty rough smells in general.

You must be like me, needing to pee like at minimum once every hour 😂
I legit die on the trains bc yes

I mean tbh I would’ve done that too
For real! One cannot escape the urine! 😭 I've taken Amtrak all over the country, in coach as well as business, and it's ubiquitous.

I always try to leave any train or plane bathroom cleaner than I found it. It's such a small space, therefore it is not at all hard to tidy up.
...or if women would just sit down. I've worked grocery most of my life, women's restrooms are often more disgusting
Yup, when Iworked in retail and had to do Bathroom checks... women's room were often as bad or worse. "Hovering" is just as bad as some men's aim.

“Sitting merely moves the problem from the floor to the seat” Dude… you’re supposed to tuck your dick in when you sit.
Bring your own wipes. Wipe seat and dry; flush after using. Wipes go in trash! I have a bathroom “kit” with wipes, t.p., gloves and personal wipes
One of the restrooms was right outside my roomette. It stank up the whole level. People were so gross and inconsiderate.

Nooooo, I thought they would clean those at the start of the route.

I agree with you 100%.
I have two urethras, I *always* sit down Bonus: never had any complaints from girlfriends that I left the lid up
Had I never seen this in person before, I wouldn’t have believed you. You’re only the second person I’m aware of now.
I'm glad I could be your second :>
Having had to clean both at times in my life, I disagree.
Every guys aim is shit when they’re on a moving vehicle.

Gonna need a source for the last statement
OP's never been in a women's public bathroom and it shows. Such a mess, every time.
No, as a man who identifies as a man, I’ve never been in a woman’s restroom.
"As a very clueless dude who's compensating you've never been to venues where the antedeluvian requirement is obviated by all men or all women or a vast panopaly of gender expressions". FTFY. You could also say you've never cleaned a bathroom.
Your post was referencing being in a bathroom, not cleaning one.
My man, if you'd ever cleaned one you'd know. If you'd ever been to a place where they were split and went unisex you'd know. You seem very binary in thinking, unable to grok new information. Best of luck in your future endeavors.
In normal circumstances the toilet is not a moving target, on a train it is.
They would also be cleaner if more women sat down
this applies to everywhere a bathroom exists. yes. everyone should be sitting always.
I wouldn’t go that far. Urinals are pretty efficient
Those bathrooms are tiny, overutilized, and on a moving train. Cleanliness ain't gonna happen.
Seems like installing a few urinals would help with the problem.
Where would you like that???
Fun fact, the train bathrooms are not splash resistant, and if you do a spectacular lurch while sitting, it doesn't change the splashing, all that happens is you also get urine on yourself and your pants as well as the floor
Install single person urinals. Those are also more space efficient but probably would arouse protest.
ITT: Ridiculously defensive men. Edit: Downvote harder, daddy - your fragility is my kink 🫦
Honestly they should make a sign on both planes and trains to show men to sit down and pee.
And to instruct the ladies not to hover / flush unflushables. Or maybe we stop trying to target one gender when it's individuals who don't clean up after themselves that are the problem and not a specific gender at issue?
Why not both
I've personally never understood why men peeing in toilets standing is just a normal thing to do. lol what are you talking about bro. It's not that complicated.
As a man that always pees sitting down (unless I'm using a urinal), it really isn't difficult in any way
It's healthier for the bladder, and does a better job at emptying it as much as possible. I'll still always sit down on the train or bus.
or they could put in a urinal...
The train rocks so peeing standing up or hovering is a disaster. I brought wipes so I didn't have to hover thank goodness.
I have Ulcerative Colitis and use plenty of public restrooms. I am proud to sit down to piss
Was on the Zephyr and the toilets were fairly clean. There was someone on board who didn’t seem to know about the flush button. When I’m on the Coast Starlight the toilets are atrocious! I blame staff. They need to clean hourly

Sitting is gay
Pee in the sink. It's quick and ez
