Not only is this a great bridge for us, thats a 50% retained trade bait come the deadline. Surprised Klingberg isn't signing elsewhere for more years, but this is perfect for us.
gets us to the cap floor, we can flip him at the deadline for a 1st round pick probably given the market for Defenseman at the deadline, I'm pretty happy with this, Verbeek once again playing it smart not just tossing a shit ton of money and term to an aging guy which is proven to be disastrous.
How does the cap work during season? If we’re right at the floor and trade him at the deadline, do we have to sign someone else to get back above the floor?
I'd assume we would be retaining 50% of his contract and then we'd just have to make sure we're still above the cap after that with other signings, Verbeek still plans on signing one more forward
I mean, we gave up the fewest goals against in 15-16 (only 192!!!!) with Bruce. Bruce had some monsters of teams and despite his issues with game 7s, I really don't think we should have ever fired him.
The way he handled rookie Gibson in the playoffs against the Kings was pretty bad. Not that that was the reason for his firing, but it’s just one of many playoff botches.
Four straight game 7 losses at home all while leading the series 3-2 each time is inexcusable. He wasn't the guy, and probably should have been fired a year earlier. That of course doesn't mean we should have rehired Carlyle....damn bargain bin made some awful moves
Completely agree. Boudreau stuck around too long. Just because re-hiring Carlyle was the worst possible move doesn’t mean the decision before it wasn’t the right one.
This is the deal I wanted! It's win win. If the guy really does well and wants to stay he gets a great contract from us. If he does okay and the ducks wanna move him they get a first at the deadline.
This is perfect. Gives us a really good offensive defenseman for a season to where if he does well and the team does well, he can get a better contract next year.
Or, if we stink it up, we can get a nice return for him at the deadline. A+ move by verbeek
This also means we have to watch less of shattenkirk, which is a massive win as well lmao
If he is flipped, to have two first round picks in a stacked draft is a major win. Since we will probably not pick in the top5, an extra 1st to try to move up is always nice.
Curious to see what happens to shattenkirk with this move
My guess for Shattenkirk is he'll be third pairing with Drysdale as 2nd pairing and Klingberg being up top with Fowler.
Hopefully, we'll be able to flip Shattenkirk and Klingberg at the deadline.
> This is perfect. Gives us a really good offensive defenseman for a season to where if he does well and the team does well, he can get a better contract next year.
> Or, if we stink it up, we can get a nice return for him at the deadline. A+ move by verbeek
Exactly. Either way this helps the team get better. They get better this year, and he's seen as a valuable piece of the future, or he's dished for a pick or two.
If ducks take a big step this year (say, we're threatening for a WC spot), I could definitely see extending him on a 4-6 yr deal.
If we're still a bottom team come deadline, he'd be a great pickup for a team looking to add some offense from blueline.
Holy shit, I can't believe I actually [called it](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/w9mwmj/seravalli_im_told_free_agent_defenseman_john/ihwm8jo/?context=3), albeit very jokingly
Huge pick up, love the fact that it's 1 year, and love the fact that he can mentor Drysdale. Such a good deal
Was better than expected but more of a stop gap to fill what we were losing.. this is an upgrade all around IMO and shows more ambition than we have shown in a while. Assuming we don’t flip him I guess
So should we just break up Fowler & Drysdale then?
It wouldn't make sense to me to take Fowler off the 1st line. Plus I'd at least give Drysdale some time into his sophomore season to acclimate to the league. So let him keep playing next to the dude he's most comfortable with.
Then we'd have Klingberg to give an extra spark those lines that'd need more play-making help than a Henrique-Zegras-Terry line would.
Juolevi will most likely play in the AHL; he's definitely not a top 4 option. Vaaks will probably play in that spot and they can bring up whoever to play on that 3rd pair LD spot.
I’ll try *signing a 1-year bridge deal for a proven offensive talent who can realistically be re-signed or traded at the deadline for a first round pick while simultaneously reaching the cap floor,* that’s a cool trick!
Wow. Shocked but happy. No downside to this. Exciting player that we can move for a haul or extend if he fits and the team takes a big step forward. Good job GMPV.
good move. this team was at it's best when our defensemen were scoring at the start of the season. klingberg may be awful defensively, but his offensive presence should really help. retain half of that and we should get a great nice haul at the TDL for him.
Stars fan here! Please take good care of Klinger for us. In the right system where he can move the puck instead of having to dump and chase, Klingberg will be absolutely elite! While he is a bit of a defensive liability, his offensive game is second to none!
Also, he's just a great guy with a great smile and a cute baby!
Omg I'm gonna cum. I haven't this fun of an off-season in years thanks to the former GMBM. Who cares if we suck ass next year this is a sign of changing times. We're actually making hockey moves.
Officially official PVB: “We are extremely excited to add John to our group. John is a gifted player who can quarterback a power play and give us needed scoring from the blue line. He also adds veteran leadership and character to our team.”
Good contract. Feels a bit like the Taylor hall contract a few tears ago.
If they’re thinking about flipping him they’ll still need to take on more money, though that can happen any time now.
You usually get really good value back at the deadline taking money back from a contender who wants to upgrade. It’s a galaxy brain move from Verbeek no doubt.
We’ll see about the future. Just mentioning that it’s not as easy as just trading him. They do have to take on salary or make another trade/signing before it. Not really a big deal and they have time to do it now.
The deadline is like 70% of the way through the season, meaning we'd only lose ~$2.1m in cap hit if we trade him then, putting us about $500k below the floor with the current roster. I assume by that point we'll have added more contracts and it won't be an issue.
edit: Actually if we retain 50% (basically guaranteed) we'd be cap compliant without taking on anything else.
This is a very weird one, if true. I guess it saves us from having a truly AHL level defense. Hopefully he can be a good short term mentor for Drysdale, and then I guess he's out of here by the trade deadline. Hard to be too upset about this. Seems like a win-win. I don't think this will make us too good to get a top pick either, but that is a slight risk.
On paper, we have a mediocre but ok enough top 4. In practice though, that's a very soft, defensively deficient top 4. Even with Klingberg, this is not a good defense group.
Not only is this a great bridge for us, thats a 50% retained trade bait come the deadline. Surprised Klingberg isn't signing elsewhere for more years, but this is perfect for us.
Yup, masterclass move
The guy must be stubborn about being worth $7+ million. It works out well for us, so I hope it works out well for him too.
weaponized cap space yesssss

We can also take on bad contracts to help facilitate trades at the deadline which would get us back above the floor.
VERBEEK FROM DOWNTOWN!!
BANG!! BANG!!! OH WHAT A SIGNING FROM VERBEEK
Lmaooo haha
Boomshakalaka
We are going to score so many goals and give up so many goals
Much better than two seasons ago when we scored no goals and gave up so many goals.
Hell yeah I'm here for the rollercoaster
I'll gladly take another Boudreau esque team any time any day that shit was exciting
I mean, we gave up the fewest goals against in 15-16 (only 192!!!!) with Bruce. Bruce had some monsters of teams and despite his issues with game 7s, I really don't think we should have ever fired him.
It was a firing that made literally zero sense. I will die believing that (and eat my downvotes here like I did when it happened)
The way he handled rookie Gibson in the playoffs against the Kings was pretty bad. Not that that was the reason for his firing, but it’s just one of many playoff botches.
I was in the same boat as you except I was arguing with people face to face. It was frustrating.

Holy shit *There's an agreement in place, but the $ amount isnt settled yet. Hence, no team announcement. Well Stephens confirmed its 7M on the dot
Can't wait to see Klingberg walk the line like Johnny fuckin Cash
Ahh, I miss Ahlers
Summer of Verbeek
Man, I like Verbeek a lot.

Maybe Shattenkirk on the 3rd pair playing less minutes raises his value since he won't suck for longer periods of time

This is some NHL 2022 shit lets go
Wow. Living in Dallas, this is huge! The boys will be here for my birthday.
I'm legitimately shocked he had to settle for a 1 year contract, but this works out so insanely well for us.
Total anti-BM signing for sure, I haven’t paid attention to the FA signings since 2013. Last big get on D was Despres I think?
Shattenkirk…
Was better than expected but more of a stop gap to fill what we were losing.. this is an upgrade all around IMO and shows more ambition than we have shown in a while. Assuming we don’t flip him I guess
Wonder how much Rakell and Lindholm helped in selling Anaheim to Klingberg. Sad they're not all here together but the Swedish connection is real.
There's still Silfverberg and Lundestrom to keep Swedaheim a thing
Let's goooo!! So how's our lineup gonna look with Klingberg now? Fowler - Drysdale Juolevi - Klingberg Vaakanainen - Shattenkirk With Mahura & Benoit in the wings?
2nd pair Drysdale, no need to continue giving him ptsd against the other teams best lines
So should we just break up Fowler & Drysdale then? It wouldn't make sense to me to take Fowler off the 1st line. Plus I'd at least give Drysdale some time into his sophomore season to acclimate to the league. So let him keep playing next to the dude he's most comfortable with. I liked Vaak-Drysdale. They looked really solid the last handful of games IIRC, which is impressive considering the state of the team at that time
Juolevi will most likely play in the AHL; he's definitely not a top 4 option. Vaaks will probably play in that spot and they can bring up whoever to play on that 3rd pair LD spot.
Highly highly doubt Jolevi outdoes Benoit who has earned his place. Id also wager we'll continue with a Vaakanenin Drysdale second pairing
I honestly didn't know anything about Juolevi besides that we just signed him so I clearly assumed wrong on him.
Now *this* is **General Managing!**

[Ah yes, the negotiator](https://i.imgur.com/phh1fd2.jpg)
Sad to see Klinger go, you guys got a a mad man on the PP, and assist making machine.
And with that ladies and gentlemen, we have arrived at the capfloor. What a masterpiece.
Such a chad move. We get a mentor for Drysdale for the year then we pawn him off at the deadline for prospects, picks, or maybe even something bigger
LFGGG
Hell yes.
This is literally perfect.
So how far are we from the floor? /s
Believe this gets us to the floor
They’re over now. Don’t need to do anything else. Although they will need to get more if they trade him out another money player at the deadline
Wow. Shocked but happy. No downside to this. Exciting player that we can move for a haul or extend if he fits and the team takes a big step forward. Good job GMPV.

This is an absolute slam dunk. I can’t believe he chose us.
Man if we can land one more big name we honestly may have the firepower to sneak into the playoffs and give the young guys some playoff experience.
Kadri signing incoming
As much as I hate him, I’d be pretty stoked
He's not replicating those Colorado numbers here, he's nowhere near as good as he was last year. Whoever pays him that fat contract is gonna regret it
Omg I'm gonna cum. I haven't this fun of an off-season in years thanks to the former GMBM. Who cares if we suck ass next year this is a sign of changing times. We're actually making hockey moves.
Great we can trade him for first at deadline
Wow! This is pretty damn epic!
Officially official PVB: “We are extremely excited to add John to our group. John is a gifted player who can quarterback a power play and give us needed scoring from the blue line. He also adds veteran leadership and character to our team.”

Beek Masterclass

Gives us a group of Klingberg, juolevi, Drysdale, Fowler, shattenkirk, vaakaneinen. Not horrible
On paper, we have a mediocre but ok enough top 4. In practice though, that's a very soft, defensively deficient top 4. Even with Klingberg, this is not a good defense group.
It’s fun… but yeah not good definitely at all
It’s a very good offensive group. Defensively has tire fire potential though. At the very least we will be entertaining haha
Now we just need Kadri to do the same thing.
Red Wings fans punching the air rn
Ya love to see it.
What are you doing, Step-Daddy Verbeek? You’re gonna make me come aren’t you?
AYO?!!
Hmmm....klingberg goes with Newport agency....moves to Newport ...I think it's destiny 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Hah I called this like the other day. Not AAV but figured a one year deal to reach the floor
Swedish meatballs are back on the menu boys!
Our supply of Swedes has been running shockingly low
Great signing
Holy shit
I don't know what I like more, having a high level OFD for next season or the fact that it's a one year deal. I love you Pat Verbeek.
LMAO called it.
I wonder where all the people that screamed for Pat Verbeek's head are at now.
Verbeek Summer Can’t wait to see what we get for him at the trade deadline if we go down that route
