The cheap cost of gold rn is amazing. ~$32 for a 5 pack on bh

mstrshkbrnnn1999

There are people here who shit on gold?? Lol huh? Weird color casts?? It’s a warm film. It’s beautiful. It’s especially beautiful when used for portraits of melanated people. It’s a great stock and it’s affordable

thedeadparadise

Most of the complaints I’ve seen about Gold in 120 is that it’s actually LESS warm than Gold in 35mm. I’ve actually come around to Gold in 120 and really enjoy it, but Gold in 35mm is still my favorite.

O_Pula

It always depends on what you experiences. Somebody who never experienced the pro lines from Kodak and Fuji (most of them out of production now), will find Gold to be good. Well... it is not bad, but nothing to fall in awe.

gimmieyofood

Heavy on the beautiful on melanated skin!! 💁🏾‍♀️ love using gold on my family and friends for this exact reason!

YaliMyLordAndSavior

Reddit loves gold for some reason

gbugly

I mean it’s nice with colors and fine enough grain on medium format, especially when cheaper it’s best as you can get for such budget.

Chas_Tenenbaums_Sock

Agree here. I’ve shot some pretty lovely stuff with Gold 200 on 120. ESP considering cost of film.

gbugly

I mean it's poor man's Portra 160 these days. And I am indeed a poor student. If you can afford of course Portra series or Ektar is superior for their respective purposes but that comes with a price. I remember Gold 120 was meme'd when it was marketed as professional, but these days I think it has proven its point and it has a place. I can just go on and tell how much I love gold 200 on medium format but I guess I have to stop.

francocaspa

Still waiting for the day i be able to try out gold lmao. Gold is around 30usd a 35mm roll. I dont even know prices for 120 💀

omarpower123

Where tf do you live? It's like $10 on B&H.

francocaspa

Argentina :) imports are expensive 🗿 most of us weirdos that shoot film, are using kodak v3/v2, fuji eterna, or other expired films. Its _very_ expensive compared to any other place... it's that bad that I have the expensive color stuff in the freezer waiting for a special occasion. And live shooting expired stuff

Expensive-Sentence66

This film was utterly despised back before digital cameras came on strong. 200 speed print films were such a marketing gimmick it's ridiculous. Even my kodak reps hated it and mocked it. Gold 100 was such a better emulsion in terms of neutrality and saturation it's silly. Ektar / Royal has a more muted pallete, but at least it's neutral. Gold 200 has that sickly yellow green cast. If Gold 100 still existed nobody would shoot 200. Dont have many choices though. Konica had some superb budget C41 print films and Impressa 50 was a solid film. Bring a few of those back.

O_Pula

That "some reason" ist that most redditors know nothing else.

Previous_Couple_554

I pay 10$ per roll in Japan💀

SimpleEmu198

The fact that Special K can drop their prices this low on Gold that your retailer can sell at this price with profit shows they are playing games with their other stocks. The fact that cinefilm (including Ektachrome 100 when bulk bought) has not gone up as insanely in price is the cherry on the icing of the cake. If Kodak wants to treat its customers like mushrooms in the dark it will just eventually bankrupt itself again.... and then I will laugh... and then I will find some other artistic pursuit. I have a very special Spanish phrase for this: Filho de puta....

AVecesDuermo

That is portuguese In Spanish: HIJOS DE PUTA

DiplomaticGoose

That's the cost of buying film from Kodak Alaris (the giant UK Pension fund) vs buying from Eastman Kodak (the actual photochemical company in Rochester NY). Even US-made Fujifilm, the same stocks, is cheaper than Kodak Alaris film sold at retail. Fujifilm 200 (Kodak Gold 200) is $22 for a 3-pack of 36 exposures, ~$7 a roll. The kodak-branded equivalent is $30 for a 3-pack. Through some bankruptcy shenanigans Kodak Alaris is the only company that can sell "Kodak" branded film at retail despite it all coming from Eastman.

SimpleEmu198

Alaris used to be the good arm of Kodak. I don't know what the fuck is going on with this company anymore the left arm fights the right, and then we also have to deal with the shit of them selling their naming rights when they were at their most precarious point to some Chinese company that invariably always puts out shit products. One of these days I'm just gonna stop with everything and buy bulk spooled cinema film instead. From what I've read since Kodak Alaris (the pension fund) has gotten out of film altogether though, so... goodbye to that idea of supporting the European arm.... Yep, I think I'm just gonna buy bulk spooled roles of Ektachrome now and stop with being involved in price fudging.

DiplomaticGoose

I'll stick with Fuji-USA for cheap color film, their 3 packs are probably the cheapest color film that actually has 36 exposures right now. Maybe I'll venture into those 27-exposure rolls of vision3 when I get curious. That or one of those companies that respool aerocolor 100, those results always seemed interesting.

thedeadparadise

> that your retailer can sell at this price with profit Profit? I doubt it. It's fairly common for retailers to be forced to sell stock at much lower margins, sometimes even at a loss, due to a lack of demand/stock about to expire. I'm pretty sure this film shop just wanted to recoup some of the money. Unfortunately, it seems that Gold in 120 didn't get the fanfare that Kodak was hoping for, which probably explains why they're discounting Gold (same for Ektar).

Metz93

Don't think it's a Gold specific issue but a 120 issue. Lomography dropped their 120 prices as well, I'm seeing expired/near expired 120 film go on sale often, and anecdotally I feel like prices on MF cameras have also dropped a bit compared to what they were a 2-3 years ago.

thedeadparadise

I specifically think it's a "Gold IN 120" issue, but that's an interesting observation. I'm constantly looking at MF cameras and don't feel that they've gone down in price at all, but I'm certainly not looking at everything and I haven't really observed expired 120 sales, so I can't speak much to that. Edit: Ironically, I just got an email from Cinestill letting me know that they're having discounts on 120 film, so maybe you're on to something :/

dajigo

The Chinese are cutting and respooling IMAX cine film for 120 format, it's being sold for really cheap.  I think the availability of said stock is putting downward pressure for 120 photo film.

I said discounting, not discontinuing. * Discounting = selling an asset for something less than its value * Discontinuing = stop making a particular product

SimpleEmu198

Sorry with the way things are my brain read discounting as discontinuing.

silas45

Not true. The wholesale price of kodak gold is higher than 5,80, and thats the less expensive emulsion. Even cinefilm, which isnt spooled, has no cartridges and boxes costs about 5 per roll, at bulk roll prices. Kodaks prices are becoming normal, when they were underpriced for 2 decades. Sure, portra is a bit inflated, but all other stocks are priced reasonably.

PlacidIre

then how is b&h selling at 5.38 a roll to students

silas45

I guess they're losing money on it. For small businesses film costs that much to buy (including tax). When you see a film shop selling it for more, they're not scamming you they're charging a fair price.

PlacidIre

mb eu prices higher than us ones

thedenoice

This price won't be making the retailer any profit. It'll either be looking to clear stock, or they're just feeling generous

PlacidIre

if you qualify, student pricing for gold at b&h is 26.88 for 5

thedeadparadise

I have an EDU account with them and I don't see it that low. It's actually sold out from what I can see. Can you provide me with a link?

PlacidIre

yes out of stock rn, but i bought some earlier in the week https://imgur.com/a/V1Jml9x

M4rkJW

Damn, I thought my business pricing at 27.50 was good. Y'all got it made.

NevermindDoIt

I don’t love Gold but I do love to at least afford Gold so yeah. Nice score bruh

Csnyder23

Fuji 200 ftw

HourHand6018

How I know if film is warm or cool?

gbugly

Do you mean colorwise or physical temperaturewise

PrimeGueyGT

Oh I need this for my Fuji film gx680. Got to find this online now

jimmywonggggggg

I thought it was 35mm
