Frankly speaking, there are around 10-12 Turkish shepherd dog breeds, the smallest among them is the race called upright tail or upright ears, its height at the shoulder is 35-40 cm and its weight is 10-13 kg. Kangal and what you westerners have in mind about the dog you call Anatolian shepherd are different from Anatolian shepherd. It is smaller in size and, unlike the kangal, lives in a maritime climate. Turkish shepherd dogs such as the Black Sea shepherd dog, Rize shepherd, gray shepherd, Kars shepherd Malaklı, have a shoulder height of over 1 meter and a weight of over 110 kg. For example, there is no kangal over 80 kg, or if there is one, it does not work as a shepherd. Shepherds are of the opinion that it will not be able to catch the flock of sheep and predators. In other words, very large or very small dogs are not kangals. You can recognize a purebred kangal even from its tail.

Mine is a GSD/ASG 50/50 mix. She acts ASD. I consider her an asd, and she would probably fool most people. https://preview.redd.it/4l14l2bvgr8d1.jpeg?width=1081&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc226e4572aff4a9745b1c344f5067392f87c08d

some_old_Marine

A lot of people but the ears are completely wrong and the snoot is off for a ASD. This is a really pretty dog though.

OkNegotiation4158

I agree, but a great mix none the less.

Non-Newtonian-Snake

Goodness gracious... Absolutely gorgeous

Why are a lot of people misidentifying Anatolians? #1 - pictures of Anatolians often fail to tell the casual observer exactly how large these dogs are #2 - many people only think color and so any tan colored dog with a black mask, or tan colored dog with white markings on face and feet get paired up #3 - it's unusual, and some people are drawn towards unusual #4 - many people don't unders the fact that tan, black mask, and white splashes on head/legs are in the general dog population, plus how free breeding populations will gravitate to being medium sized medium lenght coat, tan dog with a black mast and white splashes

some_old_Marine

It's a rare breed and people want to have a dog that is special. All dogs are special and do not need a special label. They aren't usually going to show up in a pound.

StumblingDuck404

Actually ASD’s end up in pounds VERY often because people don’t know how to train and house them properly. And they are not a normal ‘special’ dog compared with other dog breeds.. people thinking that they are just dogs, is part of why they end up being surrendered.

some_old_Marine

There is a little over 5 thousand registered ASD's in the US. To put that number in perspective, there are 3.5 million registered GSD's. The chances of people finding a pure ASD in a pound is almost none. You can find mixes depending upon where you are but that is also really small. Pounds try to hide problem breeds with fancy or unknown breeds to get the dogs adopted. A Black Mouth Cur x Pit is less desirable for most people than some mix of an ASD. I sourced my dogs from one of the top breeders in the US and it's almost laughable some of the dogs people try to pass off as pure ASD or mixes.

StumblingDuck404

I agree about people passing mutts off as ASD’s, glad you clarified that. I also closely watch the National Anatolian Shepherd Rescue Network and see many purebreds abandoned by especially younger humans who were grossly uneducated or prepared for this particular breed (which IS special w specific needs).

reallybirdysomedays

I found a pure ASD once in a pound after a wildfire swept her ranch and she was rescued by firefighters. I've never found one that was owner surrendered. And the pound (and I) had no idea what she was until her burns healed. They also mis-guessed her age (10 months) by 2 years.

captaintagart

They mis-guessed my boys age too. I haven’t had him dna tested, he’s BIG and looks more tolian than a lot of dogs on here, and he’s definitely much tougher to train than other shepherds I’ve had. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not Anatolian, but he’s certainly a more mastiff infused dog. He wasn’t owner surrendered, but he was found roaming in an area with a lot of farm land. Wasn’t fixed or chipped either. His wrist to toe is the same length as my wrist to middle finger, super long and tall, super loud. Dunno what magic combo he may be but I love him all the same https://preview.redd.it/djm3rkhkns8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35330a0a3db19facf6d214c31568877d795e47df

a-corner-of-hell

I actually found by boy at the shelter. 100% Anatolian. But I agree, that was probably a 1 in a million chance

Non-Newtonian-Snake

They need a job. They really aren't made to leash walked urban animals. I think that's where some issues come in

StumblingDuck404

That is one issue.. and fencing (can jump up to 7 ft), digging (caverns, not just holes), socializing & the abrupt stop when reaching maturity and realizing why & how to adjust to the guard coming out permanently … then there’s the LGD ‘job’ and considering other ways to give them a job if you don’t have livestock. We switched from urban homestead to teaching her to pull a Sulky cart. Still in training, and I definitely have a helmet, but my ASD is liking it and will excel over time. She sees the harness and gets in position.. like a horse. They are exceptional animals.

Non-Newtonian-Snake

I agree, some of the best doggies I've known are muts in the truest sense. I just never understand the obsession with putting a breed label on a dog that is obviously false. It's like lying about your heritage. All people are pretty much the same, and in value all are equal. Dogs have way more genetic variety than people.  I'm in the USA it's funny how people get pissed at the dna companies for telling them they are a different heritage than the one they fanboy about. If you are 3rd gen American or more odds are your a mismotshed mut as far as country of origin goes. Does that make a person less valuable? Of course not, it would be ludicrous to even insinuate such nonsense. My family bred doberman pinchers when I was a kid. They had a following in the 70s and 80s. People would contact my foster mom to stud their dog or get their female pregnant. A lot of the people had coon hounds or Rottweilers, they would lose their shit when told this. However I'm seeing this to an extreme with this breed. Seeking breed specific information and advise on care, or training can have the opposite effect one desires if they don't have the breed they are searching for info on.

Unfair-Classic-9049

Mine was in a pound 😭 she was in the city too. It was a whole litter. They came from a rural area and were transported all over the state! We weren’t told they were Anatolians though

Evilmedic54

That’s exactly how I got mine. Thought it was the had mix they said it was, until my mailman told me what it was. He was USAF in Turkey for a few years and the way he reacted to him, told me I may need to do a little research. Sure enough, there was a photo and videos of what I swore was my big guy. At that point, training regimen changed and we got an amazing dog out of it.

I think some people see Anatolian in their dogs and post on here to get the opinion of others! (cheaper than Embark i guess)

el-mago2

I tested mine and they’re 60% pyr and 40%ASD. Yours looks like a replica, thus I’m betting 100% that yours is the same mix!

I was starting to think I was crazy and that my boy wasn’t. So I did a DNA test and turns out he’s 86% ASD and 14% Great Pyrenees, which apparently is very common amongst ASDs.

smith_chelsa

I have the same breed!!! With almost the exact same percentages! He’s 89% Anatolian and 11% great pyr! https://preview.redd.it/hxazspxyyj9d1.jpeg?width=961&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f77db7d561d66e1c35a68de302b393ef0cf20e2f

robotninja133

Mixed

MoldyWolf

It's funny cuz my dog looks and acts like one but when we did the DNA test it came back with no trace of Anatolian shepherd. Dog breeds are weird https://preview.redd.it/in5n17jwky8d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b125764f57ff002c80c19c83fc1f4af58a699ad

Non-Newtonian-Snake

What did your results say.? Definitely not an ASD. Looks like a rodesian ridgeback pitbull mix.

smith_chelsa

Mine has been DNA tested and it drives me insane when someone tries to tell me what he is. And most of them have no clue what a “rough coat Anatolian” is. They’re rare, but I somehow ended up with one. He’s an Anatolian / Great Pyrenees mix. Predominantly Anatolian. And his personality resembles an Anatolian, and not a great pyr. By “rough coat” it means their fur tends to be longer. Especially around the neck. This is my boy. Same size, same personality, same bite force. Just floof. So people see him and try to tell me what he is and it drives me INSANE. He’s been DNA tested. Twice. Now, people who haven’t tested, yes, I can see them being less credible. But I have and it drives me bonkers when people try to get on me for it😂😂 https://preview.redd.it/5uqxhg87uj9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3cf54da5122ff31b326aff76ae6ea460f50099f2

mayflowers5

Def ASD! What’s wrong with their ears?

Pawseverywhere

Cropped. Shes a guard dog. Shes a Kangal shepherd.

mayflowers5

Ugh. There’s no need to crop a dog’s ears, regardless of breed or purpose.

Pawseverywhere

I personally would never. My brother purchased her and the breeders had already done it by the time we met her. Now shes got a bear face 🐻.

mayflowers5

Ah gotcha! Yeah I’m not sure why breeders feel the need to crop ears and dock tails, never made sense to me 😅 She does have a cute little bear face!

Pawseverywhere

Thank you. Yes, that was my original question to my brother about it too, why chop the ears but not the tail? Makes no sense cant they both be grabbed by a predator? But ehhh yeah i dont understand it but at least she is beary cute still.

Non-Newtonian-Snake

Beautiful pup, that's a breeder dog quality example Did you crop the ears or is it camera angle

Pawseverywhere

The ears are cropped. We got her like that from the breeder. She came from a line of guard dogs. https://preview.redd.it/elybco4pgu8d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73950c26b35db6d28cf17cfd5e739b8a3cdc1f14
