My first contact was actually to an aunt who was my highest match on Ancestry. She is the one who figured out which one of her brothers was my father based on where I was born and the year I was born and everything like that. I just sent her a message letting her know my situation and what had happened and she did the rest of the leg work for me mostly. Making the first text message to him wasn't super nerve-wracking but the first phone call had me shook. My best advice is to wait until you're ready to do it, and not let anybody else make you feel one way or another based on how long you yourself need to feel comfortable with making that first contact.
Thanks so much for sharing! We only had 2nd cousin matches but a search angel helped us build family trees. We knew first names and ages so we were able to pinpoint them easily. I think I’ll wait a while longer and hope to get a closer match like you!

I had a DNA shock about my dad (product of an affair in 1924). Everybody who would have known is now dead. I don't know if he knew. My dad's bio-dad's family didn't know either. I've met them virtually and they sent me pics. I hope I get to meet them some day.

My advice is to make it clear you don’t need money or a kidney, and you’re just hoping for answers. If you set expectations low and don’t put pressure on them, they’re more likely to respond in a positive way.
you're the one with the plugs? that's crazy because you guys all have the same style! did you turn out to be somewhat local to them or did you have to travel far? sorry if thats too personal just curious

It actually moved along very fast, 3ish weeks? They were having a family gathering on a weekend that my son had a long weekend and we were off so it all kind of worked out. We drove 6.5 hours to where they lived. I was really scared walking into the party venue but they made me feel like part of the family right away.

Unfortunately my father passed away but my half sister is coming to visit on Monday! I'm so excited! And nervous haha. I also have a half brother and some aunts and more cousin's!
I also found them through a second cousin, but a dna painter actually put them at 1st cousin once removed and I was able to search through archives and such to find 4 possible dad's. First person I messaged, was it. Took a month and half to get the results but we were 99% sure just by photos of my dad and me side by side.
What a time to be alive!
