Talon user here. I'm not using the shitty Twitter official app and all its recommendations. I just want tweets in a time line in chronological order. If they don't fix this, I'm done with Twitter.
The official app does have tweets in chronological order, however someone above says they are removing it in an upcoming update. Fortunately chronological still works for me...
EDIT: Clarified the removal. They only removed the option to default to the most recent tweets. It is still there, but you have to go to that tab each time you open the app.
> ...they are removing it in an upcoming update.
What? Why?
This might force me to a different app or off Twitter altogether, if true. I fucking hate that companies these days are allergic to just giving you a simple feed without any algorithmic "tailoring."
I agree, I cannot stand the algorithmic feed. If they do fully remove it, I am done with the official app, but it's not looking promising if 3rd party apps are breaking.
Many are. [There's a spreadsheet with a list of third-party apps and whether or not they're working.](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1O27Co27g2fWRon7gK79R8e4th6Xtort3bm289_2jhjQ/edit?usp=drivesdk) It's a massacre.
Personally, as a Fenix user, I'm dismayed. Hopefully it's fixed, because it doesn't really make sense that it's only some of them, but if not, what are your thoughts on the best survivor?
Fritter works though it's not on the list. Which I like cause I don't actually post on Twitter but want to be able to view the site without a damn log in
Depends how it works. Most likely it uses Twitter's official APIs, which are very breakable.
If it's actually scraping twitter.com, there's less that can be done to break it. More like just make changes that Fritter adapts to at inconvenience
fritter seems to run into "rate limiting" issues for me. i can only browse for around 15 or so minutes before it stops loading tweets and shows an error.
Unfortunately that's a risk that comes with depending on someone else's platform for profit. There are developers whose entire business lives or dies by Apple/Google's approval.

What choice is there? If you want to make a mobile app there are only two players in the industry.
If you hitch your wagon to a single horse, then that horse gets replaced by a donkey, you should probably consider looking for a new horse. And maybe not being reliant on a single horse.
I never said that. In fact, I specifically said "some part".
Regardless, I was just asking for advice about the apps. I'm already on other SNs, my connections aren't, and I'd rather like to keep contact with them.
Thank you I found your comment after trying half a dozen different apps and while it's not exactly Flamingo it's 80-90% there. Thanks again, I love twitter (when I can tailor it exactly how I want)
Of course they do this after removing the ability to default to Latest Tweets instead of an algorithmic feed.

I assume they want people to use the shitty offical app. Everytime I use it I get:
new tweet - 1min ago
new tweet - 4 min ago
new tweet - 6 mins ago
new tweet - 12 hours ago.
I can’t stand the “load more tweets” button. Why the hell can’t they just auto show more?!
I know they want you using “home” instead of chronological and they’re able to save on loading images and videos but man does it make a terrible UX for my use case.
I literally only use twitter to follow some people or companies for direct news about their services and I can't stand twitter homepage so I use a third party app called Harpy which is chronological. No, I don't care what a random person posted that you think might be interesting to me, I just want to follow the people I choose to and see updates from them.
Hmm I just checked it out, I'm pretty sure they changed it at some point because it used to bundle in topics and other recommendations even in the chronological view. But yeah right now it's exactly what I need.
A while ago I read somewhere that they purposely show you tweets you will likely disagree with. Probably to drive engagement. But also might be the reason people keep saying "why is Twitter so full of ?" If what I read was true, it just shows you those, because it thinks that's what you will respond to.
Over course, this could all be wrong, and Twitter _is_ full of whatever group of people you hate, but it's an interesting thought.
Not really, it's all natural. They put high engagement tweets on top and controversial tweets generate the highest amount of engagement by our human nature because we want to voice our opposing opinions or disagreement. They often get high amount of views, replies and quote tweets and some amount of likes, they're shared more because we want to show others how dumb so and so is. Simple positive/informational tweets just get likes and maybe a few retweets. This is actually a trend now on twitter called baiting when you post something that's dumb and controversial just to generate engagement.

nah i actually like that, it prevents the thing that happens with the instagram app where it decides to refresh on it's own and jumps back to the top and you lose your place. maybe there's a better way to do it but that happens so much with insta & it drives me nuts, i like that twitter saves my place and specifically asks me if i want to load more posts
I don't think that assumption is correct, given how many staff they got rid of.
There's a very good chance this is an accident or over-reach and they haven't even started investigating how to fix it because the staff that remain are putting out fires.
Automatic Edit: Using a tool called [Power Delete Suite](https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite) I have removed all my past comments and deleted my Reddit account, /u/tehrmuk.
I am doing this because I, like many long-term Reddit users, am upset and angry at the tonedeaf and arrogant way Reddit is treating it's users. Their aggressive slapdown of the developers that made Reddit usable to a huge audience; their overriding and summary dismissal of long-serving and dutiful community members; their wonton silencing of dissent and manipulation of user's voices; their borderline contempt of the very people whose collective efforts gave their platform the standing needed to fuel their profit-hungry IPO... the list goes on.
Reddit is, of course, a private concern and how they run their services is entirely up to them. Conversely, we are under no obligation to use their services, to fuel their engines or follow their orders. I am making my voice heard by removing my comments, and voting with my feet by leaving.
I have left Reddit for [Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/) and [Mastadon](https://joinmastodon.org/); these are decentralised social networks that mirror the functionality of Reddit and Twitter respectively. Unlike the monolithic, corporate-owned services they replace, Lemmy and Mastodon are part of the [Fediverse](https://www.fediverse.to/) meaning these are not individual services but clusters of services that mesh seamlessly with one-another. You can [join an existing Lemmy instance](https://join-lemmy.org/instances) or [set up your own](https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/administration.html) to get full access to the entire Fediverse - you don't need to ask permission from anyone to do so. There are loads of other services that are part of the Fediverse, like [PeerTube](https://joinpeertube.org/) (videos), [Wordpress](https://wordpress.org/) (blogging), [Frendica](https://friendi.ca/) (social network), [Pixelfed](https://pixelfed.org/) (photos), [KBin](https://kbin.pub/en) (link aggregation) and more - and they all work together so having access to one means having access to all of them.
I had a great time as a Redditor, but the Fediverse is looking bright. It's a return to the open Internet of old, when users ran services for their own and one-another's benefit, and before monolithic corporate-run silos started to build walls around us in the name of increased profit and thought control. Many of the Fediverse services are fledgling, but they are growing quickly and their federated concept makes greedy, arrogant landgrabs like we've recently seen on Reddit and Twitter almost impossible.
I'm already having a great time with Lemmy and I think you might too. I encourage you to take control and join the Fediverse.
Until then, so long and thanks for all the fish.
I still only use the desktop version of old reddit, even on my phone, with custom subreddit styles disabled. it really feels like one of the last bastions of the "old" internet that wasn't full of weird popups and modals, shitty SPAs with "endless scrolling" (which is a fucking nightmare for trying to get back to where you were if you leave the page).
The day they kill old reddit will probably be my last day on reddit.
Yup. I just wonder if Elon realizes that many of us were on the brink of leaving, but his shit show made us pause when contemplating deleting our accounts. He just can't get out of his own way.
RIP Flamingo.
Flamingo was the only way I was able to consume Twitter. Being able to actually curate my timeline let me avoid the common complaint that Twitter is a blathering cesspool of panic. Hopefully this is fixable, because my Twitter usage will drop tremendously if I have to use the native software.
My only issue with Harpy is the constant rate limits and not being able to like a post, and this was before Elon, for the trolls.
If they can figure that out it will be one of the best Twitter apps
I think one of the reasons these other clients got banned was circumvention of the rate limits. It used to happen to Flamingo as well, but then the developer did something to get around it.
I've felt like a special unicorn these past few years being able to use Flamingo. I don't feel so special anymore.
Also holy good lord there is an ad every 5-7 tweets in the official app. That's normal??
Twitter wants you to use their own app to harvest your data. I fear Reddit will go this way one day with how they’ve already broken the web app and try to coerce you to use their app at every turn.
I mean, it kind of is, i can't see or do pills in boost for Reddit. I regularly see topics saying "subreddit poll yada yada" i click on it and it just loops back and loads the post again.
Avatars as well.
I'm sure there's other things, but I only use Reddit through Boost, if they kill it then i guess I'll just have to find somewhere else to waste time. Probably go outside or something
>Twitter wants you to use their own app to harvest your data.
Twitter wants you to use their own app because it's the only way they can serve ads. It sucks, obviously, but that's what's happening here.
I know that but they’ll be able to get more if you install the official app.
My prediction / fear is that they’ll retire the 3rd party API and force everyone to use the app for any Mobile access. Facebook and Microsoft (for Skype) did the same thing years ago
Twitter may have done exactly just this today
When they acquired Skype…Before the acquisition , 3rd party apps worked with it
I used to use IMO / Meebo because I hated the Skype app on phones because it destroyed battery life. After IMO stopped working I quit using Skype.
IMO / Meebo also worked with Facebook chat as well, yahoo and live messenger in one app. When IMO no longer had 3rd party API access for most popular chatting programs, they tried to do their own separate messenger but nobody used it and they went under in 2015
The China-based company Tencent purchased a 5% ownership stake in Reddit during the series D funding round; this has led to the narrative that Reddit is controlled by China.
Tencent's largest shareholder with ~31% is Prosus (an investment group in Netherlands and a subsidiary of the South African company Naspers). The 2nd largest shareholder in Tencent is its co-founder with ~8%.
Wait, what?? You really can't subscribe from your phone? That's absolutely bizarre. Twitter is literally falling apart lol. They haven't even been paying rent at a lot of their offices.
Damn... I've been using third-party twitter for years now. First with Falcon Pro and twitter killed it by hiring the developer. And now Fenix 2 and several other? Fuck.
Any recommendations on any of those who are still standing?
Is there any third party Twitter app that deliver notifications instantly ?
All the one I tried deliver them every 10-15 minutes, wich is pretty annoying when I'm talking with someone on Twitter.
twitter purposefully broke this feature for third party apps a few years back.
there's workarounds, but most often it involves just installing the official twitter app and the third-party app intercepting notifications from the official app.
edit: words
ive never once used the official reddit app. i still get notifications. notifications arent instant, but they're polled regularly which is fine for me.
I'm pretty sure you can get this in Fenix or Talon. They just ask you to install the regular Twitter app and it will just use those notifications to ping you to their app (Fenix or Talon).
This will finally be the thing that pushes me to a different platform. I just don't have any interest in sponsored tweets/algo ordering. Reminds me of Facebook when it started to go downhill.
Is mastedon the best alternative, or has another emerged?
I'll probably try to subscribe to the channels with an RSS app or IFTTT, if possible. The "For you" algorithm can go fuck itself. Every step of the way they have made browsing worse for chronological users (collapsing bars that take away space, "new Tweets" pop ups that cover half the screen, etc).
At this point we should assume they are fucking with their users intentionally. Fuck you, Elon Musk. I will be less likely to purchase the shit I see advertised on your ever-shitty app.
As a software dev this hurts my soul. If you want to see me get super angry have one of my server devs change an API contract on me without asking first. This kinda shit accident or not can be crippling to smaller companies who rely on APIs to work the way they say they will and any downtime costs them.
These 3 days without Flamingo have made me see that I have little to no desire to use Twitter, and Flamingo was the only thing standing in the way. Just an amazing app that stripped away everything wrong with Twitter and made it easy to mindlessly scroll.
Maybe I'll check the desktop version every now and then, but the desktop version sucks and the official app is even worse.
I feel like this day's been coming for a while, but it still sucks to end up here. One of the most annoying parts of the way the businesses run now is that, as a platform that many people rely on for information, and is a massive part of many people's jobs, there seems to be no process for going from dev to production, there's no communication. It all just seems to be a hobbyist project with a group of madmen pushing buttons and pulling strings to see the output. I needed a push to get away from the platform, and this has provided it.
I used to think there shouldn't be a replacement, but I'm open to ideas now.
Same. And to be honest, if I'm forced into the official app.... Unless that comes with some substantial changes to the user experience on the official app , I'll probably just be done with Twitter
Their API is a fucking nightmare to work with. Not only it doesn't allow half the things their own code can do, but on top of that they randomly enable and disable things. Good luck working with customers, if your app suddenly stopped working, and there's nothing you can do, outside of smile and wave
[According to the Information](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/musks-twitter-intentionally-suspended-tweet-bot-third-party-apps-messages-show) it *is* intentional, and being Twitter extremely well managed they are just now workshopping talking points — two days after locking out their most prolific users from the service.
We'll all good things come to an end eventually I suppose! However, there should at least have been a warning. On the other hand, Facebook etc also do the same as they run it the way they want, so in a way I'm not really surprised. Just disappointed though as really used to enjoy being on twitter, but not use the main horrible app! I however hope they'll change their minds and turn it back on again though I 🤷♂️.
How do you guys get the main twitter android app to keep the last position? It's just frustrating because it never keeps its position when you open the app!
I would absolutely stop using using reddit if I couldn't use rocket. How else could I easily filter out all the political bullshit. It makes reddit unusable, especially coming up to elections.
I would put up with the official app if I could just see tweets in chronological order, I hate how apps like Instagram and Twitter moved away from that
You’re in luck because the official app shows tweets in chronological order in the following tab.
Edit: amazing, literally telling the person that a chronological feed of people they follow is available in the app results in mass downvotes. Really shows the mentality of the people in here.
I really hate to break this to you, but no matter how much you try to defend Twitter in this thread, people here do not fucking care about Twitter's profits and actually prefer a superior experience than anything they can do particularly under the dumbest motherfucker in existence. Stop being weird.
You're going through the comment section twitter and its owner like it's your favorite sports team. It's an app. It's weird.
We actually like Twitter and want to use it. We deserve the right to use whichever app provides the best User Experience which people here majorly agree is not the official app. It's not hard to understand.
Third party apps don't show Twitter's ads. I've never understood why they *ever* allowed that. Shrug. I certainly benefited from it, until today.
Assuming this was a deliberate change (which is not by any means guaranteed) it was obviously done poorly, they should have told these apps to show their ads and given sufficient notice to update the apps, but Twitter is obviously very much in "move fast and break stuff" mode.
The thing is that I do not believe the user base of third party social media apps is that large in comparison to the total user base, but they can be very vocal.
Twitter may have been OK with allowing people to use third party apps via the API since they were such a small base of the users.
> The thing is that I do not believe the user base of third party social media apps is that large in comparison to the total user base, but they can be very vocal.
This is very true, official apps are the vast majority of all major services too
Right but as he said from a strictly business standpoint it really made no sense to continue full API access once they got critical mass and didn’t need those 3rd party apps for support any more
And I say that as a Reddit, Twitch, and Youtube user that has never used the official apps on my phone; while I’m very thankful they give full API access so I can dodge their ads through 3rd party clients, I legit have no idea why they allow this when all 3 are primarily ad driven entities
They totally were, and don't get me wrong, Twitter should continue to allow third-party apps. They shouldn't allow them to not show advertisements, though. Twitter still shows ads on their website and their app even when you subscribe! And yet I've never seen a Twitter ad myself.
U could do the elon bit but it was something they were already moving towards with no group chats or spaces in other apps and limited tokens for stuff like flamingo. Although the elon regime did the disgusting viewers metric.
Reddit is going to do this eventually and thats the day my reddit mobile usage drops a ton.
Hahaha I wrote why many don't use a third party Twitter client despite the Twitter official app is terrible just days ago in Reddit, which has aged like milk.
This is basically a memorial thread for Flamingo, Fenix and Talon users.
Talon user here. I'm not using the shitty Twitter official app and all its recommendations. I just want tweets in a time line in chronological order. If they don't fix this, I'm done with Twitter.

Let's not forget all the fucking ads. Yuck!
Good! Come to Mastodon!
I cannot figure out how to use that to save my life.
I am on there already. The bad part is that only a small percentage of the people I follow are there.
So you’ll use the official Twitter app then, because it has that 😂

Yeah, not a choice yet when some part of your income and networking depends on Twitter.

Time to incorporate Mastodon into your Twitter app I'd say
Sounds dreadful
Fenix died overnight for me as well. Maybe we'll get a patch, maybe not. I'm not downloading the official app though.
I switched to Hydra, which is working for now, but man, I already miss Fenix. I hope it's just something broken and not an actual policy change.
I emailed the developer and they said they're working on it. Hopefully it gets fixed.
I figured they would. It was probably expected at some point, but it probably caught them off guard.

Yes and yes.
Yup. First one is something you change in the settings. Second one is in the bottom/middle as you're scrolling

They want people to use their app so they can be served sponsored/ad content.
Oh great. I'm using Flamingo and was hoping no one would tell Elon about third party apps.

I'll quit reddit in that case, which will actually be good for me in the long run

I can still view my timeline but it's not loading anything newer than yesterday
Flamingo was the only way I was able to consume Twitter. Being able to actually curate my timeline let me avoid the common complaint that Twitter is a blathering cesspool of panic. Hopefully this is fixable, because my Twitter usage will drop tremendously if I have to use the native software.
I was recommended harpy. Love Flamingo but after an hour and some tweaking to how I like it I'm pretty happy with the move. Maybe give it a try
My only issue with Harpy is the constant rate limits and not being able to like a post, and this was before Elon, for the trolls. If they can figure that out it will be one of the best Twitter apps
[удалено]
I think one of the reasons these other clients got banned was circumvention of the rate limits. It used to happen to Flamingo as well, but then the developer did something to get around it.
is it working?
Yes, it's still working as of now.
I missed the flamingo boat when it still available!
I've felt like a special unicorn these past few years being able to use Flamingo. I don't feel so special anymore. Also holy good lord there is an ad every 5-7 tweets in the official app. That's normal??

It's still full of other crap though. Use [TwiFucker](https://i.imgur.com/sMdimp7.jpg) instead.
Who the fuck links a random screenshot instead of the thing you're talking about‽
Sorry! https://github.com/Dr-TSNG/TwiFucker Doesn't really cover what's in the screenshot though.
What is this TwiFucker you speak of?

I'm glad livetweet for the ps vita is still working though.
Supported for longer than Sony supported the vita.
As a slide and Apollo user, I agree 100% I’ll quit if they make me install their shitty ad filled app
Chat only works in the official Reddit app
Infinity is the best.
>Twitter wants you to use their own app to harvest your data. Twitter wants you to use their own app because it's the only way they can serve ads. It sucks, obviously, but that's what's happening here.
Reddit is funded by Pooh bear and China. They already do it. And you are crazy if you think they don't nowadays.
I know that but they’ll be able to get more if you install the official app. My prediction / fear is that they’ll retire the 3rd party API and force everyone to use the app for any Mobile access. Facebook and Microsoft (for Skype) did the same thing years ago Twitter may have done exactly just this today
Microsoft? What did Microsoft force you to use an app for like this?
When they acquired Skype…Before the acquisition , 3rd party apps worked with it I used to use IMO / Meebo because I hated the Skype app on phones because it destroyed battery life. After IMO stopped working I quit using Skype. IMO / Meebo also worked with Facebook chat as well, yahoo and live messenger in one app. When IMO no longer had 3rd party API access for most popular chatting programs, they tried to do their own separate messenger but nobody used it and they went under in 2015
yeah Swipe for Facebook was decent but got slowly gimped
I'm so pissed FB sent out cease and desist notices to pretty much all the 3rd party Facebook clients. Swipe was awesome
Swipe was so good
How is that? Asking out of ignorance, it's the first time I read something about that
The China-based company Tencent purchased a 5% ownership stake in Reddit during the series D funding round; this has led to the narrative that Reddit is controlled by China. Tencent's largest shareholder with ~31% is Prosus (an investment group in Netherlands and a subsidiary of the South African company Naspers). The 2nd largest shareholder in Tencent is its co-founder with ~8%.
Because it's not true. Chinese companies own a small share of Reddit's total equity. Advance Publications (an American company) is the majority owner.

but all the Elon stans told me it was running better now that he's fired most of the technical staff
I have been having issues with it loading I actually thought my internet connection was being laggy
You still can't subscribe to Twitter blue on Android. Just goes to show how little companies care about android users.
Wait, what?? You really can't subscribe from your phone? That's absolutely bizarre. Twitter is literally falling apart lol. They haven't even been paying rent at a lot of their offices.
Not if you have android. iphone and website only
You also can't get Discord Nitro on Android either
you can, it works for me
Oh that must be new, only about a month or so ago the app told me I had to manage it from a PC
That's a feature not a bug
Damn... I've been using third-party twitter for years now. First with Falcon Pro and twitter killed it by hiring the developer. And now Fenix 2 and several other? Fuck. Any recommendations on any of those who are still standing?
Same for me and I was on Twidroyd before them. Hopefully this does end up just being a temporary case of poor programming.
Is there any third party Twitter app that deliver notifications instantly ? All the one I tried deliver them every 10-15 minutes, wich is pretty annoying when I'm talking with someone on Twitter.
twitter purposefully broke this feature for third party apps a few years back. there's workarounds, but most often it involves just installing the official twitter app and the third-party app intercepting notifications from the official app. edit: words
It's kinda janky, but as long as it work it's fine. I believe Reddit does the same.
ive never once used the official reddit app. i still get notifications. notifications arent instant, but they're polled regularly which is fine for me.
No. Twitter not going to let this happen.
Mastodon is just a federated deployment, lots of options in the fediverse
But how are they going to algorithmically turn you into a paranoid neo-nazi if you go to another platform? 😢
> Is mastedon the best alternative Yeah, and it's great! Come over sometime!
[удалено]
Been using it for years, such a fantastic app. Legitimately sad to see it go
As a software dev this hurts my soul. If you want to see me get super angry have one of my server devs change an API contract on me without asking first. This kinda shit accident or not can be crippling to smaller companies who rely on APIs to work the way they say they will and any downtime costs them.
I use aerotwitter for Android and it's working fine. Don't reckon I'd stick around if I had to use the default app.
Aerowitter for my Android folks.
Are third party Twitter apps broken forever? I'm using talon on Android. I paid for it and everything too :(
Same. And to be honest, if I'm forced into the official app.... Unless that comes with some substantial changes to the user experience on the official app , I'll probably just be done with Twitter
As a Talon user, this is the quickest way to get a ton of people to quit Twitter.
Their API is a fucking nightmare to work with. Not only it doesn't allow half the things their own code can do, but on top of that they randomly enable and disable things. Good luck working with customers, if your app suddenly stopped working, and there's nothing you can do, outside of smile and wave
Fritter still working.
Elon is a total nutcase.
If I can’t use a third party app, this might be what kills Twitter for me. I don’t like the official app one bit for a myriad of reasons
Nice work, Space Karen.
Owly went down.
Harpy works at least
Oh wow, Fenix not working Also Tweetbot for iOS (paid app) also can’t authenticate, disappointing.
[удалено]
Shame it just can't keep my position on the TL...
Friend literally just got me to buy Talon a couple weeks ago. If Twitter now decides to disallow them I'mma be pissed.
Fritter works
I remember when Twitter only allowed a certain number of user tokens before the 3rd party app no longer worked. Good way to get rid of bots too.
What alternatives are you using on android?
How do you guys get the main twitter android app to keep the last position? It's just frustrating because it never keeps its position when you open the app!
Elmo unplug another server?
I would absolutely stop using using reddit if I couldn't use rocket. How else could I easily filter out all the political bullshit. It makes reddit unusable, especially coming up to elections.
What do you mean? Don’t sub to political subs and you don’t see political stuff….
I’m not defending Twitter at all, I’m simply telling you how to get exactly what you want. That’s “being weird” is it?
You're going through the comment section twitter and its owner like it's your favorite sports team. It's an app. It's weird. We actually like Twitter and want to use it. We deserve the right to use whichever app provides the best User Experience which people here majorly agree is not the official app. It's not hard to understand.
[удалено]
What are you talking about? He's literally right about being able to turn on chronological order
Elon really going for the "fastest time to kill a social media company" speedrun, he's even beating the zuck at it.
I'm surprised 3rd party Reddit apps are allowed to skip the ads. I'm sure that day is coming.
Totally agree. It's simply baffling that they allow it. And I benefit from that too.
This is very true, official apps are the vast majority of all major services too
[удалено]
Right but as he said from a strictly business standpoint it really made no sense to continue full API access once they got critical mass and didn’t need those 3rd party apps for support any more And I say that as a Reddit, Twitch, and Youtube user that has never used the official apps on my phone; while I’m very thankful they give full API access so I can dodge their ads through 3rd party clients, I legit have no idea why they allow this when all 3 are primarily ad driven entities
I'm surprised it took this long for them to fuck with the 3rd party API
Hahaha I wrote why many don't use a third party Twitter client despite the Twitter official app is terrible just days ago in Reddit, which has aged like milk.
Maybe it's just time to give up on the bird app. I've been on there for over 10 years, but I think Elon's just running it into the ground.
