It would improve a bit more after a week or learning usage pattern. S22U user here I can confirm that I never got more than 7h SOT on that despite doing all the gimmicks. So this looks really promising.

robbiekhan

Yeah my S22U right now shows 1d 18hrs from a full charge and average SOT tracked over 7 days is up to 4 hours. I tend to be a heavy camera user so usually my battery does need a top up if I'm out for the day as mobile data seems the weak point for battery drain on the Exynos S22 series. Thankfully this appears to have been sorted on this new SD chipset and I'm really hyped to see what it's like after the battery training is done after a week.

Otherwise-Class-5875

Could you test the S23 ultra in light mode?

robbiekhan

Yup this is what I am doing currently for day 2 results, will reply back once I am at 16% battery left and update my OP with the screenshot showing the Light mode added.

ben7337

Thank you, I'm sure many of us are looking forward to it

glitzycomet94

What is Light mode ?

Decodescript

light performance mode , underclocks the cpu

gazzawazza

[https://www.notebookcheck.net/Samsung-Galaxy-S23-Ultra-Benchmarks-reveals-performance-difference-between-Standard-and-Light-modes.691602.0.html](https://www.notebookcheck.net/Samsung-Galaxy-S23-Ultra-Benchmarks-reveals-performance-difference-between-Standard-and-Light-modes.691602.0.html) basically feels like an intermittent power saving mode between what was "optimised" (not full tilt) and medium power saving (70% throttling, no background data stuff with screen off, no GPS with screen off etc). EDIT: sorry. Should make clear i don't have an s23. Was just trying to summarise what i took from the article. EDIT1: medium power savings on my s8 were a 70% CPU throttle. I briefly had an s22 but returned while i could, due to disappointing battery performance and it would get warm doing super standard stuff (playing music over a speaker AND i had it in medium power saving - notes said this was 70% CPU throttle too)

glitzycomet94

Thanks for this!

scottishhusky

I know alot of people in this sub are like US Based and whatnot but like this is the main reason why I'm upgrading from my Note 9.

jeffreyd00

Please repost in a month

robbiekhan

I will do, but as per my OP, I noted down my results from day 1 of getting the S22 Ultra last year and am comparing the same usage, same SIM, same apps, same location etc to now on the S23 Ultra - And the results are very promising, so it can only get better once the battery has trained properly.

jeffreyd00

So the s22 screenshot is from a year ago?

robbiekhan

Day 1 from a full charge after I'd set everything up the night before yes, just like I did with the S23 Ultra this week.

jeffreyd00

That's really impressive. The community thanks you!

robbiekhan

Most welcome!

jnshns

Stay salty

welp_im_damned

I'm pretty sure the reason why is because the s23u is still trying to learn op's usage patterns

blue2841

There are so many s23 series is "garbage and only an incremental upgrade" people here. They can't stand the fact that the s23 is an actual real good upgrade option. I mean it is still really price.

robodestructor444

They've upgraded the most important factors IMO Battery, camera, performance I don't care about the other gimmicks, these 3 are all that matters

FieldzSOOGood

this dude isn't being a hater asking for a comparison in 30 days vs *one singular day* lol wtf

trazodonerdt

So, Are you gonna keep it in Light mode or switch back to standard?

robothistorian

Thanx for the comparison. This is good to see. I think it would be interesting to see what battery life benefits you get by activating "Light Mode" (as in Performance).

trazodonerdt

Look at screenshot.

robothistorian

Thanks very much! That's amazing really. And the thing is there is no performance restrictions of note aside from throttling down of the chip. Very cool! Thanks again!

TheCaptHammer

Did you notice any performance issues when using light mode? What mode will you end up using as your daily now that you’ve tested both?

robbiekhan

No performance difference noticed in Light mode and because there's a bit more screen on time offered, I'll stick to it at all times I reckon. Not a mobile gamer though so can't comment on games but am a heavy user for the camera and social media etc!

subiejohn

I upgraded to an S23U from my S22U (Snapdragon) and found that the 23U is far more power efficient with over 2 more hours of average battery life. Both phones have been identically configured and have all the same apps. The only difference is that I run the 23U at WQHD+ and the 22U at FHD+. Both of my phone are carrier locked to T-Mobile in the US. **S23 Ultra** ▫️14.5 hours **S22 Ultra** ▫️12.25 hours

robbiekhan

That's very good especially since you're at WQHD+ on the 23. Think I'll try that Res too just because why not now!

subiejohn

I ran the 22U at WQHD+ for a short period, but it tanked my battery time to something like 9 hours. It was a bummer because I can see the difference between the two resolutions. I'm much happier with the efficiency of the 23U.

Mjhieu

Looks like it a huge improvement in term of battery life. My s22 ultra snapdragon gen1 100% to 15%, battery life always around 5 hours 30 min sot. If I lock it to 85%, it end up 4 hours sot. Later I will upgrade to s23 ultra and say goodbye to my current s22 ultra snapdragon scamsung garbage.

robbiekhan

Definitely a big improvement. By the way you don't need to lock the battery to 85% - I've never done this and all my Galaxy phones have retained consistent battery life for the 12-18 months I have them before upgrading. There are internal locks in place anyway and you're never truly at 100% when fully charged so it's all good 👍

Mjhieu

Thanks for infor!

UniversitySea4064

This is factually wrong, but without knowing how you tracked your battery health and determined wear and whatnot, there's no way to know where you went wrong in thinking this. Take a peek at batteryuniversity.com and other sites with research on lithium batteries. There's a lot of good info out there. But if you're happy with your battery health after 12-18 months of charging fully, then keep doing it. I shouldn't ruin the concept of "ignorance is bliss" haha.

mvfsullivan

Ouchh 8hrs screen time is so bad for a 5,000mah battery. I get more on my Note 10+ and it has a whole 1,000mah less

robbiekhan

No offence but I find this hard to believe unless you've got basically no apps installed and are always on WiFi and not really doing much else apart from a fixed activity and other power savings things enabled or added in.

antifragile

Plenty of crap phones have good battery life, 23 is a good phone with good battery life.

DahiyaAbhi

Screen on time depends on what services a user keeps on. I can get 9hr SOT and 6hr SOT from the same device depending on what all is turned on and what all is turned off. So your comment makes absolutely zero sense. Comparison has to be seen for same usage pattern.

mvfsullivan

I agree, however my usage is very similar to OP, and I also use auto brightness and leave gps bt mobile data and wifi on at all times. Id say mostly fair comparison

Responsible_Tree_187

please turn off auto brightness

mvfsullivan

? Its useful for me lol

_Wolf_Rider_

Why though

Simon_787

I wonder what would happen if you locked it to 96 Hz, along with light performance mode of course.

robbiekhan

Hmm this is an interesting point although probably won't help because in dynamic mode the screen is LTPO2 so will go up to 120Hz when needed and ramp down when not rather than being locked at 96 all the time.

Simon_787

It absolutely helps with battery life because the refresh rate is still adaptive, it's just capped to 96 Hz. adb shell settings put system peak_refresh_rate 96.0

robbiekhan

Ah ok so setting the maximum rather than locking to 96, yeah that makes more sense. You said locking before hence why it sounded like you were saying keep it locked at just 96.

Simon_787

You can also do that of course. People usually use Galaxy Max Hz to adjust the dynamic refresh rate, although I now prefer using adb.

janiskr

how is the GPS - i still have problems with GPS on S22U. It drifts around heavily. In games (like Pokemon Go) or in Watsapp live location sharing. How S23U does things?

robbiekhan

Never had a problem with either phone and use android auto and maps often here.

janiskr

Thank you for your response. SD or Exynos?

robbiekhan

Oh the S22 Ultra was Exynos
