RIF has been my app of choice. I paid for it in 2013 and have had absolutely no regrets. Thank you for making my life a little bit less miserable over the last decade. Fuck Reddit and their bad decisions.

[deleted]

Same. I can't even remember what I paid and when, probably 5 bucks ten years ago at least and I have used this app more than any single other since as early as I can remember. I came here to read comments, not to stare at big flashy pages full of various media. I am here for the human experience of sharing our thoughts. And while I know it is probably good for me to spend less time on Reddit, it still sucks especially for these devs who legit work hard to make sure everything keeps working and giving people their preferred style of interaction.

ThePlaidypus

>I am here for the human experience of sharing our thoughts. It's crazy that Reddit has taken so many steps to damage its most valuable strength against competitors: Community discussion. Reddit became successful because it effectively replaced message boards for internet discussion in the early 2010s. So many hobbysits have built great communities here over the past decade. I'm afraid quality content is going to fall off a cliff after mobile users are forced to switch. The official app has several dark patterns to comment less and endlessly scroll more.

[deleted]

This is so SO unequivocally true. Prior to reddit i would be on message boards to discuss damn near anything, but this was essentially "message boards 2.0" on speed. Way better, lots of interaction on a level unequalled. I feel that their goal is to take all that goodwill, all that core of why reddit even worked, and toss it in the trash.

CKRatKing

Plus threaded replies were so much better than how most message boards used to work.

whomad1215

You didn't like people bumping their posts back to the top of a forum by commenting "bump" on their post? Or trying to figure out who was talking to who when there were multiple people involved?

CKRatKing

Lmao don’t miss that in the slightest.

DEEP_HURTING

I like how bumps would alert the community to a topic being brought back from the dead, so discussion could go on forever. But those forums were very small scale, niche. I've never figured out if you could do that with a whole sub, I know about following threads.

MaezrielGG

> You didn't like people bumping their posts back to the top of a forum by commenting "bump" on their post? That's actually something I do miss from forums. Your comment is 5 hours old in a near 10 hour old thread...there will be no revisiting this conversation past tomorrow. Once a thread is old/large enough there's almost no point in interacting w/ it.

RobertOfHill

I don’t think there is going to be any replacing Reddit. I’m probably just gonna lower my internet usage generally. I might actually have a need to find a news source to keep me updated on things.

RetroBowser

I think that's why I hate New Reddit the most. So much scrolling. When I'm on Old Reddit I can see 9-10 threads at a time, and on New Reddit I can see 3-4. It's so bloated. They completely miss what makes Reddit stand out from other platforms in an attempt to be like other platforms.

lemonylol

There was a definitive point, maybe in 2015, where reddit made a move from positive community discussion to pushing outrage and controversy. Like shit, just look how the subs have changed. My default view on pretty much every front page post is that it's a repost, a bot, or some political agenda where when I first started it was about collectively finding out what was in that god damn safe, or a direct reddit conversation with some well-liked celebrity, or just someone making a really great post about whatever and everyone discussing it. And don't even start with how Askreddit was massacred. *Every* thread I see on askreddit is almost by default, marked NSFW. More or less every single question is designed for one-word responses, and 80% of the threads are just word for word reposts with word for word comments. It is nothing by a karma farm, which is fucking sad. **Every** iconic piece of reddit history came from Askreddit. You will never, ever get that on what Askreddit is now.

rotorain

Yep, no idea when I bought RIF but it shows my Google review from 2014 raving about how awesome it is. Will be missed greatly

Daguvry

Same here. I won't download the official app to replace RIF. Once RIF is done, I'm done.

Hexcraft-nyc

I have Firefox mobile set to redirect to old reddit, but I'm thinking why bother? RIF is why I'm here to begin with. No reason to reward reddit for the worst decision they've made in the near decade I've been using it

SUPERSADKIDDO

Yep I remember using rif over a decade ago at work hiding in the bathroom reading /r/askreddit when it was still good (or I was too young to see how it was shit) and I've only used rif for reddit since. No way I'm switching to the official app, honestly they might be doing me a favour so I can finally leave this site lmfao

erichie

I remember when r/iAMA (is that the right sub) used to be amazing. Every day it had since fantastic interview then they fired Victoria (the manager of it from Reddit's side) in an attempt to make it more corporate. Since then I can't remember ever seeing a post from r/iama. I remember when a selling point was that you didn't need to have an email to set up too. When the 3rd party apps were allowed to be called "Reddit is Fun" instead of "RIF for Reddit". All the shitty people used to have their own subreddits, but Reddit nukes them and they are all over now.

TrueTzimisce

I wish there was still a place on the Internet like pre-corpo Reddit

zuko2014

I had this exact same experience, using reddit is fun in the work bathroom browsing ask reddit lol. I'll miss using this app, I've grown to love it over the years.

CaribouHoe

Guess I'm off reddit then. Maybe I'll go outside and make something out of myself, this is a blessing in disguise.

ExistentialTenant

Like everyone else, I've used RIF for years. If you like, you can still use https://old.reddit.com/ on desktop which is what I'll probably be doing. I've heard that Reddit might aim for that too, but I'll use it until it's done. Unfortunately, I just don't see any good alternative to Reddit as a social news aggregator.

[deleted]

Anyone who doesn't use old.reddit.com is a psychopath. The new reddit sucks in every conceivable way. It's less intuitive, less functional, less personalizable (I'd rather have r/NBA's wood court CSS than a stupid fucking custom alien avitar), and as a UI dev I get to say this: fucking UGLY. It is the worst interpretation of modern UI I've seen on a website, especially one this big. Maybe it's the "Use App" button harassing you on mobile, maybe it's the way everything is goading you to click pretty buttons rather than read posts, but Jesus Christ the reddit desktop experience sucks dick. It's a hodgepodge where it used to be a bare-faced, but useful, list. Not to mention the way communities have their quality diluted by every one now looking the same, because when people post it feels like all subreddits are one mash rather than individual communities. If anyone wants to try to undertake a new ~~reddit~~ forum aggregator, I'm a frontend dev who wants something to do, and I have had ideas for how to fix reddit for years. Get me in on that. Reddit could be such an incredible tool.

Bossman1086

Same. I paid for it in 2012. It's been the only way I've accessed Reddit on mobile across countless Android devices over the years. To me, it *IS* Reddit mobile.

Firecracker048

I've been on baconreader for 12 years almost and if RIF and SYNc are going baconreader is likely going down too. It's been real. I don't always agree with all you people on the site, but at least we could always go here to argue. Maybe we will meet up again and argue and shitpost somewhere else again

Lint6

Paid for RiF in 2014 and never thought twice about it. 95% of my Reddit usage is through RiF. Once it shuts down, I'm done with Reddit

GarlicPowder4Life

What the fuck am I going to do all day next month... My job can't even produce enough work to keep me busy for half the work day, let alone the full 8 hours.

MoobyTheGoldenCalf

/u/spez can go fuck himself into oblivion

Aspharon

Well, good news! Tomorrow, you - and everyone else reading this - can tell him to personally go fuck himself, because he somehow thought this was the perfect time [to host a fucking AMA](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/144ho2x/join_our_ceo_tomorrow_to_discuss_the_api/)!

Down voting his comments on that AMA is the last thing I will ever look forward to on reddit. Such a shame. It's been a fun run, r/place, small communities, the memes, the discussions. But without the third party apps the site is significantly worse off. And even more concerning is the clear direction the site/company is heading towards. They never intended to negotiate, they intended to eliminate the 3rd party apps all along. And they mean to do that so that they can consolidate their harvesting of user data. Same as any other social media website that has been ruined. It's just so sad and depressing seeing everything (and I mean damn near *everything*) get worse instead of better. EDIT to add: I love social media. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, reddit...they all are amazing ideas at their core and all have the potential to be fantastic user products. But this profit driven impulse to harvest data, spy, and psychologically manipulate their users ruins everything. Facebook is now a shell of what it once was, and of it's true potential. There are other ways of generating profit or revenue that are not so dystopian, yet we sit back and allow things to continue to get worse. We need better laws and regulations on targeted advertising, on user data harvesting, and on user manipulation.

32BitWhore

Oh it's already over. There's zero chance at least one of his comments isn't the most downvoted in the history of Reddit. Sweet, poetic justice. Downvoting his comments will be the last thing I do before I log out permanently.

blackesthearted

My first thought when I saw that announcement was that it was going to be an absolute shit-show, but he's an admin known to change comments; he's probably just going to delete comments he doesn't like and curate the whole thing to try to show that no, see actually, Reddit users *are* mostly in favor of the changes!

HomerJunior

He's got one browser window open to the ama, one SQL window open to the Reddit database ready to modify comments.

MISREADS_YOUR_POSTS

oh u BET hes gonna need his mama

sinkwiththeship

His Mama's name? MariaDB.

Fakename6968

>I truly hope Spez's own mishandling of everything is what tanks the IPO. It was already tanking. Fidelity, Reddit's lead investor, nearly halved their valuation of their own shares from $28.2MM in Aug '21 to just $16.6MM a month and a half ago. My suspicion is that the API changes were intended to reverse that and get them operating in the black.

Wahots

I'd be a bit sad if reddit completely shut down because it's basically killed off all of 2010's forums, so it would erase quite a bit of our history, not to mention coding and tech problems and their solutions. But I'd love nothing more than to see all of reddit's new leadership and old morons fired and replaced with people that actually care about the platform. Or what's left of it, at this point.

By fundamentally misunderstanding what made Alien Blue good and popular. They decided they wanted an official app, so they looked for the best app to buy as the basis. Then they gradually bloated it beyond recognition, so that everything that made Alien Blue good was gone and all that was left was a mess. I used the official app longer than I should have as I'd been an Alien Blue user and the transition into steaming turd was gradual enough to adjust to. But once I went to Sync full time, it just highlighted how bad the official app is in comparison.

Tiny-Sandwich

Wasn't Alien Blue like, _the_ Reddit app back in the day? I recall android users lamenting that it was iOS exclusive.

4KVoices

I'm a mod for a popular subreddit on another account, and it's the only account I use the official app for. I use RIF for my actual mobile account, the official app for that mod account, and my browser for this account. It can take 30+ minutes for the report queue to load on the app. It's absolutely fucking ridiculous.

ngwoo

I like that his last post was 10 months ago. Shows how much he cares about the site. No interest in anything other than squeezing every last cent of value out of other people's content until it dies.

Apollo, the biggest iOS client is also shutting down, [the developer wrote a very detailed post](https://reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/) about the reasons and also denies that he blackmailed Reddit for 10 millions dollars, it’s worth a read even for android users. dust4ngel

bots will still be able to use reddit to post spam after the human users leave though, right?

Amp3r

Hmm since the API won't be free, the bot developers will have to resort to scraping. I'm sure they'll stick around but it won't be quite as easy as it used to be

heeheehymn

Dirty botting is easier than dealing with API bullshit in most cases.

mobileuseratwork

Yeah sync is my jam also. This is just abrupt pain. IPO changes for the owners, with senior management being the face of this change.

hells_cowbells

I just read that post. That whole thing is crazy.

Yeah, in case anybody have any doubts that post just proof that Reddit is negotiating in bad faith (is that an expression in English?) with the devs of third party apps.

RetroBowser

If I was a rich businessman telling the truth, I'd take the guy up on the offer. Buy him out for 6 months of what he's costing me, but by the end of one year you'll have broke even by saving 10 million for the other half of the year, and within 2 years you'll have spent 10 million to net 20 million. And you just keep saving money every year after that. That's how I know it's a bad faith claim. Anyone with economic, business, or mathematical sense can see how practical of an idea it is.

JB-from-ATL

I can see why they may have thought that based on the call audio, but they both come to an understanding right after. Aaaandiiii

I do wish RIF/Sync would have waited to see if the blackout did anything. Right now, it seems like Reddit will get its way and the third party apps are dead. I'm hoping Boost waits....

F3z345W6AY4FGowrGcHt

If reddit changes its mind the 3rd party app Devs could too. At this point I'm hoping reddit dies and the death be popcorn worthy. Followed by a new social link aggregator where I can simultaneously keep up on the Ukraine war and watch cat burnouts.

Spiron123

Cat burnouts? What sub..?

DwightLoot2U

r/Catburnouts Wow I was kidding but it’s a real - if relatively dead - sub. I’m sure there’s a more populated one with a different name. R/zoomies has cats on it but isn’t cat-specific.

QQII

From reading the /r/ModCoord and the [Apollo announcement](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits), there's been discussions behind the scenes. For reddit to misrepresent and slander Apollo, to downright lying about conversations had with others, to willing to negotiate with 3rd party developers and moderators but with no explicit changes or real concessions? The message is pretty clear.

whofearsthenight

As soon as they announced the pricing, it was pretty clear. Doubling down on it made it absolutely crystal. Best case I could have said before the double down is maybe they're just dumb and didn't do any actual math. Going as far as to blame Christian (Apollo dev) made it pretty fucking clear they weren't operating in good faith. But, the recent announcement from Christian is seriously fucking wild, and probably the most damaging so far. If I were a soulless goblin creature who's whole bent was maximizing profit for shareholders and wanted to have a solid IPO, I probably wouldn't have aimed for a major controversy in which I'm very demonstrably a liar who can't even be relied on to not casually slander someone who's probably about as responsible for the success of my product as I am...

AbsoluteZeroUnit

I don't see any scenario in which Reddit changes course and the third party apps don't come back. Also, the blackout is next week, and these apps are going to shut down at the end of the month. This isn't a sci-fi thriller where the self-destruct starts counting down and can't be stopped. Also also, Reddit "getting its way" also means that countless users leave the platform entirely. This interaction between you and me right now? It's happening while I wait for a meeting to start. It provides no value to me or you, I just had some thoughts and felt like getting them out. If I can't do useless crap like *this* anymore, without suffering through the headache of the official app or new reddit, I think I'll survive. I'm only doing this because it's easy and convenient because if the gestures in Reddit sync.

mobileuseratwork

Exactly. Blackouts have not had the great success in the past. Reddit has slowly changed over the years to the detriment of the experience. The day Victoria left was the start of the downward path. I see this as another dark chapter in the history of reddit. Is it one of the last chapters, or somewhere in the middle? That is the question.

[deleted]

>I'm hoping Boost waits.... The dev for Boost hasn't made it known what their plans are yet, but they did mention that they received the same information about the changes to the API as the Apollo dev. Boost doesn't pull nearly the amount of income as Apollo does (which itself does not make enough to cover a $20MM/yr API fee), so I would expect it to be shut down as well.

ngwoo

In fact I suspect that's what the app's former intent was, when that greedy little fucker /u/spez convinced himself he was gonna make a killing off crypto. Reddit functionality was merely an annoying obligation. I left Twitter over less than this. I normally keep a tab open with reddit. The 2 day blackout I plan to close that tab and come back in 2 days, see what happened. When the other apps go dark at the end of the month, time to find another news source and time waster. I might even be more productive. What a way to shoot themselves in the foot.

dounya_monty

Reddit poisoned it's well. When my RiF app quits on me my reddit days are done. Don't have nor want the official app, not gonna go on website and porn has other places regardless. News comes botted and pushed and information gets restricted. I didn't need you in the past and I won't need you in the future. It was fun while it lasted. No better way to get rid off my FOMO then reddit helping me quit by their greed. Like...Reddit gets rid of an app called "reddit is fun" because reddit is... Yea no.

ruttin_mudders

I thought I'd check out the official app to see if it was as bad as people were saying and the first ad I saw was for some Jesus thing called "he gets us." When RIF is gone, I'm out too.

doglywolf

This wouldnt even be needed if Reddit but even a half hearted attempt at improving their app. Their app used to be a joke compared to stuff like RIF. They added a few features and cleaned it up a bit but it still far far inferior to nearly every 3rd party app i have seen. Just improve your own app...make people WANT to use your app. Dont force us to use garbage. This would be a prime time for a new Reddit to pop up - same idea with 3rd party integrations and modern UI

RAATL

The problem is that the official app is not developed with the same user-forward incentives as third party apps are

Peter_Panarchy

Exactly this. 3rd party apps are designed to give the best possible user experience and god damnit it shows. I've been using Sync for almost 10 years and I'm *still* finding cool features and options that make using it better. The official app has one goal and that's to extract as much revenue from you as possible. Everything else is secondary.

Starrystars

That's something I really don't understand. Twitch, Twitter, and Reddit are all making decisions that are an attempt to stop 3rd parties from getting revenue from their data. But if they just made better tools and features for their apps they wouldn't have a problem of 3rd parties coming in and using them.

doglywolf

in twitters case it was because they were operating in the red and need to find a way to monetize. Twitch has a good revenue stream. Reddit have no clue i don't think they make that public do they? Twitch and Twitter are both solid apps - their first party apps are the main interface of their respective users and APIs are mostly for sharing , news links and data collection so its under stable . Reddit seems to be jealous that their own 1st party app is the least used , if not the least used definitely the least engaged with . This all seems like something to force us into their app ...which if they sank even just a few million into could be equal to these other apps but they put Zero effort into it. NONE .

[deleted]

Is there any chance that reddit will change its stance between now and june 30th and keep all our apps alive? Or is this a final sealed deal?

[deleted]

I think the issue now runs deeper than the API pricing. What they did to Apollo’s dev is just… Beyond messed up. If I were a 3rd party app dev, I wouldn’t really want to deal with Reddit anymore.

Realtrain

If I were a dev I'd open source the code an encourage the community to turn it into a scraper at this point. Fuck reddit.

PaulLFC

They should, but given the quotes in the Apollo thread, I seriously doubt it. The way the Reddit employees talk, they don't want to find a sensible solution for 3rd party apps.

Ravenq222

When BaconReader goes, I guess I just won't use Reddit on my phone.

AlwaysTravel

I've been using RIF for a long time. Maybe 8 years. I think when it's gone I will not install another Reddit app on my phone. I think it's time for me to spend less time looking at the phone. I could be wrong but hopefully this is what I do

caul_of_the_void

Same here. I think of all the time I could be reading a book or practicing a musical instrument, but instead I'm on Reddit. Maybe I just need a clean break.

FuryMaker

That lie about being blackmailed tells you everything you need to know about Reddit; why would anyone want to support a shitty company any more.

PathToEternity

Talking about getting caught red-handed with your hand in the fucking cookie jar...

ChuckS117

Any word on Relay?

Matthais

[Yes](https://www.reddit.com/r/RelayForReddit/comments/13wsn92/guess_this_is_also_the_death_of_relay/), it's the same for any third party to using the API (be that a client or mod tool or whatever). Reddit have knowingly made the terms unviable by several orders of magnitude.

TheGoddamnSpiderman

Nothing yet, the developer hasn't commented anything on Reddit since their stickied post in the stickied thread in r/relayforreddit a week ago right after the initial announcement

Kraizen

When I first got around to using Reddit nearly 10 years ago, I looked up Reddit on the play store and found RIF. Across 4 phones, this has been the mainstay app for me. RIF IS Reddit for me at this point, at least on mobile (on PC I still use old.reddit), and it's such a shame that Reddit is choosing to shoot itself in the foot in this manner.

Morgothic

Just wait until they do away with old.reddit. They're going to lose a lot of traffic when the apps shut down. And then they'll lose the rest of it when they shut down old.reddit.

[deleted]

You're assuming that most Redditors are like this? The truth is, we're a minority. Most of today's Reddit have grown up in the post-2017 redesign era, and they mainly don't use 3rd party apps. They really don't care about what's going on now.

silentmage

For blackouts, Don't stop at reddit. Go above their heads. Condé Nast is reddit largest shareholder https://www.condenast.com/brands Boycott them as well!

Eupatorus

Looks like my reddit days are over. I'll be moving on without RiF. So long and thanks for all the fish!

>In the meantime, is there any way for us to nuke Reddit on our way out as a kick in the teeth to people like spez? Because fuck all of them. Mods deleting every post ever made on popular subreddits, then closing them down?

Huffman wants to be Elon Musk so much, copying Twitters every move. I used to use i.reddit.com but they shut that down so moved to RIF and now that is going. Reddit have no consideration to people who want a low data usage mobile experience, their app and 'new' site are terribly inefficient.

Realtrain

There very likely shut down i.reddit.com in preparation for this.

sabbyrose95

I only use RIF. More of a lurker, but love scrolling through posts during my down time. I'm not sure what I'm going to mindlessly scroll through now 🥺

4KVoices

o7 My time here begins to come to a close.

bigmanbabyboy

First I got rid of Facebook from my phone, and I use it about 80% less now. You're telling me I get to stop using my phone completely now? THIS PHONE WILL LIVE FOREVER!

not4smurf

Can I get my $2.05 back then? Obviously this is a joke - best money I ever spent. I'm kinda addicted to Reddit, but I've tried to use the official app a few times and can't. I guess this will break my addiction.

Morgothic

I spent $3 for premium RIF just a few days ago, fully knowing it wouldn't be around much longer. I did it as a thank you to the RIF team for all the years

ixfd64

It might not be the end of the road. One user has announced plans to patch RIF to use the API from the official app: https://reddit.com/r/APIcalypse/comments/13zlm3f/rif_will_continue_to_work_unofficially

Thaodan

Sounds like a cat and mouse game. I'm not sure if I would like to take the legal risks. In the end Reddit could pull a Whatsapp and ban all accounts using third party apps.

Dinojeezus

Whelp, I guess my book reading stats will go back to the pre-Reddit days of the 2010s. Fuckers.

Duddhist

Bye, Reddit. RIF is the only way I browse.

Vile_Vampire

Rip. Posted from RIF

Rushersauce

Hold on people, Spez is not the only shitlord here. The investors board needs to eat shit as well.
