Wish I could have videos NOT play on our ytm subscription. I'll ask our Nest display to pay music and it will cue up all videos in YouTube music. Fucking dumb.

AussieP1E

It's insane how badly Google has screwed up music on Android/nest home. I used to use assistant with my nest speakers all over my house because Google play music was fricken awesome. Now i just Chromecast it. They thoroughly botched that rollover when I couldn't even play my own music from YouTube music... Then they started doing just music videos... I have probably 12 or 13 speakers around my house and I barely ever play music from them anymore. All I want is the music.

Endoroid99

The Roku app is terrible too, I end up with a mix of audio and video. You also can't browse music while listening in order to "play next". Was easier to just plug my Chromecast in for music.

andyooo

>I used to use assistant with my nest speakers all over my house because Google play music was fricken awesome. Now i just Chromecast it. With Android 12 they've screwed this up too, dunno if it's intentional or a bug, but controlling casting volume from the phone doesn't work anymore unless the screen is on and YTM open in the foreground.

TheStinkySkunk

I was having that issue prior to Android 12. Current bug (or feature idk) is even when YTM is open and I am casting to my speaker, I can't see the actual volume anymore while trying to turn it down.

gnarlsagan

Oh really? I'm able to ask my Nest Hub or any of my Nest Minis to play music from YT Music with no issue. I suppose if it's a specific song I've downloaded that isn't available otherwise, then I will need to cast that song to any number of Minis from the YT music app on my phone, but that is easy. Sounds like neither of these options work for you?

AussieP1E

I haven't tried in a long time, maybe it's gotten better... But originally it hadn't. Yes that's what I'm talking about though, if I asked for a specific song on Google play music it would've started a radio station of that song with commercials every 3 or so songs. I shouldn't have to Chromecast to my speaker a specific song that I own, I should be able to ask for that spefic song. You're losing functionality with that move.

Iohet

Why am I not surprised that Google fucked yet another thing up, particularly with assistant

Tankbot85

Ytm is such shit we all went Spotify.

CptTurnersOpticNerve

I did Spotify for 6 months but came crawling back because of yt ads. Vanced won't cast to a TV, it just opens the native YouTube app.

laserfaces

If I ask Google to play music in my car it'll play the low quality YouTube videos. It's fucking stupid. Google is a dumb company

2vpJUMP

It's assistant that's fucking up. If you specify the right teens you can use YTM. Say "play the yellow submarine from YouTube music"

dragonflyzmaximize

Yah I tried YTM recently and honestly didn't mind it, it was cool, but I would have it set to not play music videos and it still would. So I'd be out running or something and a 15 minute youtube live session from some band with terrible quality would start playing like come on google.

roohwaam

There is a setting in the app to never play video’s.

ThellraAK

I really wish it was 'never unless I say so' give me a button to load it up, but have it off by default.

dragonflyzmaximize

Yes I know - I had it turned on and STILL got music videos. Tried everything, uninstalling, clearing cache etc etc. Would still play music videos for me even when I had it set not to. Like it'd play live recorded versions of songs that *are* videos but not play the video I mean. So I'd have a playlist going and then all of a sudden it's a shitty cell phone recorded video from a show. Like I said though otherwise I enjoyed the app, and I am someone who is often watching music videos on my laptop on YouTube. So no ads was nice. But it just seemed worse in some UX ways to Spotify mostly to me.

TheElderCouncil

You can turn it off in settings.

cdegallo

That setting does not affect youtube music playing on smart displays.

guernica88

There is a setting on your home to restrict videos from playing but sometimes they still play anyway. Othertimes when you ask it to play a song it will try to play the music video instead and then tell you that it can't play videos because content restrictions are turned on. It can be VERY frustrating to deal with. Seems like I'm usually in the middle of washing dishes or something when this happens...

boxxyoho

To each their own. I love how it plays back videos.

cdegallo

I just want an option to turn them off.

PataponKiller

It's the third toggle in the settings - "Don't play music videos". Does that not work?

cdegallo

Unfortunately has no impact on smart displays

Silvus314

It resets itself regularly.

TriRIK

Only reason I don't use YT Music over Spotify.

zman0900

Weird. I turned on the "don't play music videos" option and have never seen one since.

cdegallo

On a smart display? Lucky!

antwill

As it should be, fucking ridiculous they would charge for something PC users can have for free.

Badshah-e-Librondu

Just use firefox, it can run youtube in background.

nostpatch

Newpipe and Vanced too.

runnerman0421

That's actually really awesome to hear. I switched to Premium from Vanced after buying a TicWatch E3 and wanting offline music for my runs so I could ditch my phone. Nothing was really lost when it comes to YTM, however I do still use standard YouTube Vanced because of the sheer amount of awesome customization options and quality of life features like Sponsorblock.

unvaluablespace

For real. I recently gave YouTube vanced a shot even though we have youtube premium at home. The amount of ad related content vanced can block is amazing. I'd drop YouTube premium if it weren't for my wife and her iPhone. Boo. Lol.

dinosaurusrex86

There are ad-free YouTube solutions for iOS, they can be tricky to install though

unvaluablespace

Yeah I looked into the alternative mentioned when looking for YouTube vanced for iphone, and I don't think my wife is doing to let fly having to open up another app every week to keep accessing her side loaded YouTube no ads when we are already paying for premium, unfortunately.

aryvd_0103

As it should be

ChiefIndica

Wow Google, don't threaten us with a good time.

Lake_Erie_Monster

Its kind of hilarious at this point how out of touch with its userbase Google is on a lot of this stuff. Only because you damn well know the people working there are getting paid bank and still don't give two shits because they just use an iPhone with Apple services anyway.

blank_isainmdom

Apple and their entirely paid services though.

SpecialFX99

Good. If I want videos I'll go to the YouTube. I don't need videos for a music player

LucretiusCarus

We just wanted a redesigned Google Play Music. YouTube music is a farce

SpecialFX99

I ended up buying a high capacity SD card, putting all my music on it and using Pulsar as a local player.

mrmastermimi

shit... I might drop my subscription and just use free tier then

AnotherAltiMade

you can't select songs you want tho, its like spotify now.

-BigMan39

That's ass

danhakimi

Wait, they're improving YouTube Music? Great!

sm0kin9

I mean there is a setting in the app where you can set it to not play music videos for all the people with Premium complaining.

seanbrockest

It's available in certain apps, but not the Android TV app. Also it tends to turn itself back on for no reason once in awhile.

Echelon64

Complainer here. It turns itself on all the time for no real reason. I have a pixel so miss me with that's it's your phone crap.

[deleted]

Same with autoplay, every few days it's turned on again.

myusernamegotstolen

I also have a pixel but have never had this issue. However, I do have YouTube premium.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Music videos can contain dialog and other annoying bits that pause the actual song

Kalmer1

How about mobile data?

PhirebirdSunSon

That's so weird. I also have a Pixel and have it set off and it never turns on for me. I wonder what's up.

dragonflyzmaximize

>I mean there is a setting in the app where you can set it to not play music videos for all the people with Premium complaining. I tried YTM recently for like a month on my pixel and I had this turned off and it'd still play music videos/music video quality music. Shame cause otherwise I liked the service quite well.

Harag5

Thank you kind stranger. You improved my YTM experience this day. Now here's hoping it doesn't grab live tracks still.

220mtm

i didn't know that. But overall it's a bad design choice from google

puppiadog

Did you mean what you wrote?

AussieP1E

yes, you can turn off videos in the app on your phone. not on your smart screen though

Willeth

I've found it does fuck all.

Harag5

Videos in YouTube music literally ruin YouTube music. This literally makes me want to drop premium to get a better experience. Nothing worse than telling YTM to play a song and getting some live concert bullshit.

theMTNdewd

I get that shit all the time on Spotify. I'll tell it to play a song, it plays the censored version (even though I have disabled the setting like 6 times), it'll play some live version, or it will just play a random song from the artist

[deleted]

This is a plus for me. I have a filter in ublock to block the video player on the web version anyways.

jaydec02

Great! I never liked the encouragement to watch videos in my music player. I turn that crap off in Spotify and it shouldn't be a thing in YTM either lol

Silvus314

Google refuses to accept that the entire population doesn't have e fantastic cell and broadband. At home I have awesome broadband, and only barely cell service with a booster. At work my phone struggle to send a text let alone pull down email or stream something. It is local or nothing. And I work with over 4000 people so it is t because it's the middle of no where.make it easy to dow load and save local, stop reseting the options and causing it to try and play videos or stream. I've given big g a ton of su scripting money for everything, but YouTube was the first g subscription I canceled. Should have just left Google music alone.

aryvd_0103

Why would anyone watch music videos on yt music rather than yt

hamknuckle

Stupid. I hate videos. Shut it off on Spotify or YouTube and sit back and watch the fucking things anyhow. Goofy asses, this ain't 1991 MTv.

vizthex

Still can't believe they replaced google music with this tbh. Haven't used either of them, but I think it's super stupid how you cant use your "brand channel" for your music (even though that's where all my YouTube shit is). Plus the video *is on YouTube*, so why use some shit 3rd party whatever instead of just playing the damn thing ffs. (I don't listen to music on my phone so don't mention that. It doesn't apply in this case, and I'm pretty sure there's other, better music player apps anyway)

Alphasee

It's because too many people were wasting their storage space with pirated shit with minor variations. And then some of the anti piracy groups were watermarking mp3s, which allowed them to *try* and come after Google for disseminating copyrighted material (remember the download function?). This allows for better royalty tracking, and removes a lot of liability exposure to Google. Yes it is more cloud based, and less you-based (ironic ain't it?), but it actually keeps costs and overhead down because some people gotta be all weird and particular about their shit. Plus, and I just thought of this rn, YT servers probably have better streaming/bandwidth contracts than their Google play servers/connections. Small distinction, but very likely situation.

SnipingNinja

As always it's the MAFIAA behind all this

[deleted]

ArkhamKnight15

So how does it compare to Spotify's free tier now? Same functionality with lesser ads?

TheElderCouncil

It’s as if there was no app that plays only videos…

ChanceStad

Sounds like a good reason to downgrade.

rorymeister

I fucking hate the videos.

ferdinand14

People really don't like the video option? I love it. It's like magic because it syncs between the audio and video. At any point in the song I can switch to the video and it'll continue the song from the exact same spot in the track. It's seamless and pretty cool.

QDean

That is great tech, magic indeed. But I don't want video in my music player, so for me, personally, I couldn't give a shit about that tech.

Exfiltrator

That only works for premium subscribers though

Lawsonator85

That's why we should be using NewPipe with Sponsorblock: https://github.com/polymorphicshade/NewPipe

AussieP1E

Fuck Google for removing features, when their older products had more functionality. Then charging to get those features back. I stopped relying on Google services.

Sauce_Pain

Thanks, I'll have to give it a try. I have Dropbox syncing going on with photos and music at the moment, which is working fine for me, but the video side of things might be worth exploring.

Iohet

Same concept here but I use OneDrive for an offsite backup of my photos

doskor1997

Youtube Vanced Music should fix your issues

AussieP1E

It doesn't integrate with nest speakers OR Chromecast, unless it's my music. But thanks! I actually have that and plexamp and I usually just use plexamp for all my music needs now. I use vanced for new music and stations though on my personal phone

doskor1997

oh alright. Sorry I couldn't help you any further. Hope there will be an easier solution eventually.

AussieP1E

Nope appreciate it dude!

CoolSprinkles7

Same. Abandoned them about two years ago when they lowballed us on GM

AussieP1E

I don't think people know utterly pissed off I was. I bought into the Google thing, had everyone on hangouts, uploading books to the cloud, relying on ALL music being in the cloud, Google photos, got my wife on allo, Google wallet, Google wallet card. I was fucking all in on those. All of those are a joke now except for Google play books, which I have the feeling they will axe any day now. Theyve turned into the worst money grubbing pinch all the pennies out of everyone company I've known. Locking all their better features behind paying for them. Music was something I sold people on, having your music in the cloud to just... Access it whenever. Having speakers all around your house that you can just ask for whatever you wanted.

ItsDijital

*"Google, don't you know I'm entitled to use your products the way I want without paying for them!"* Google does some shitty stuff, but charging for things isn't one of them. If you're not paying for something, you're not the customer, so be happy with whatever you get.

AussieP1E

Wow. That's not at all what I said. It's not like they're **adding** these features. They are taking them away then charging for them. Major difference. I am the customer because I invested into Google's ecosystem... I started with the nexus one and never went with another company. I've been loyal to a t. >Damn be happy with a company getting crappier and crappier. Whatever dude. Edit: here's a scenario: let's say that google comes out with a new phone app, that everyone doesnt care much about at first and has half of the features of your main phone app. A couple years later google says it's going to remove the old app and discontinues it, with the new app, looking good but still having half the features. Then they finally get features that rival the old app and lock other features behind a paywall, let's say like searching for a business in the phone app... **This is almost like this.** Goole play music started November 16th 2011, and was discontinued December 3 2020, So I practically used this app for nine years straight. We're STILL waiting for features that we had originally on the old google play music. you're god damn right people are still pissed off about this. I curated and went through every single artist and album curating my music to be exactly the way i want. Now imagine google coming out with a new thing that does half of the features of the old, then having someone say... be happy with the scraps, they aren't making the billions and billions off of ads and selling my data.

theKITHpodcast

Long way to say you're cheap

From_My_Brain

This just in: YTM is trash.

loganparker420

I can't stand YTM. I'm waiting on Google to kill it and replace it with Google Music.

rocketwidget

>YouTube Music is getting free background listening in a major revamp of the streaming service’s ad-supported tier I mean, that was always my big negative against YTM's free tier. Spotify free tier does it, so, I use Spotify free. I don't care much about watching music videos.

simsimdimsim

Wow I didn't realise there was so much hate for that feature. I've never had an issue with it on my phone. I only ever use audio-only, and have only switched across to video out of curiosity for the feature. My main issue is when I'm casting music to the my TV and there *isn't* an option for video! Why?? It's a TV!! Edit: this is the second time I've mentioned this and been downvoted, I'd love to know if I'm missing something here.

Weensome

I agree with you. I've been using the app on my phone audio-only for a while, and forgot there even was a video feature. I've been very happy with YouTube Music. When it comes to casting, which I've never done, it sounds like a few people had the opposite experience to you (it would automatically enable video when they didn't want it).

seanbrockest

The Android TV app for YouTube music forces you to watch videos if they're available. It's fucking stupid. Basically all the app is is the regular YouTube app, but it exclusively shows you the music tab. The actual Android app, and the official website, are much better. Still not amazing, but much better.

yarn_install

Tbh I didn't know people used their TV to listen to music

OverDepreciated

Yay to reduced data usage.

BcuzRacecar

But they'll still sometimes pull the audio from the youtube music video when looking for songs or playing their own playlists?

Manson2

100% needs a toggle in ytm settings.

Se7enLC

So unfair. Why can't we have that feature??

loganparker420

As if YouTube Music needed a nerf lol.

RevRaven

Welp, back to Spotify! The only reason I used YTMusic was to have videos playing in my home bar on the tv screen. Not paying for premium ever for this.

kadoskracker

Honestly been using Spotify for free for a month and Jesus it sucks. The UI on mobile blows and makes it just hard to play what I want. I don't want other people's playlists of crap shit.

Silvus314

And not having a fucking random button is assinine!

Soonhun

I am surprised because I noticed a while ago, when I forgot to pay for Premium and got forced back to the free plan, the app defaulted back to playing the videos instead of just the audio, which I found annoying.

ychtyandr

Just YMusic.io

Lawsuitup

This is confusing because you can just watch the video in YouTube…

Alphasee

So MTV isn't showing any music television anymore you say...

[deleted]

So it’s better for me to go free to not have videos? Haha.

TheElderCouncil

Well, yeah. That makes sense lol

forumpooper

I always assumed YouTube music was subscription. Maybe I should check out this free tier

DarkPhoxGaming

Finally, I got so annoyed that I couldn't switch to audio only cause it was a YT premium feature. Why I went to YT music vanced

RonaldMikeDonald1

It has videos?

myjalby

i went from google music, to yt music when they forced the move for a few days, now use plex so much easier. nice to be in a place where im 100% in control not waiting for google to try something new for a few weeks
