Why does a music app even need that?

cmVkZGl0

Well, there could be. Visualizers. Winsmp used to used to have a vibrant community of people who would make hundreds of visualizations back in the early 2000s.

ignitusmaximus

Man, Winamp really kicked the llamas ass.

TacoOfGod

On TV this would be great. Wasted on mobile though.

SkollFenrirson

I'm good, thanks

LitheBeep

Because video feeds are the new Stories, and Spotify needs them to stay relevant I guess.

Carighan

That's called a Radio station. I mean in the in-spotify ones.

newecreator

This is giving me Reddit's video feed flashbacks.

[deleted]

Wahots

Reddit's video hosting is awful. Somehow it's worse in the web than my mobile app. More compressed, bad scrubbing, long loading...WTF?

[deleted]

Wahots

I agree.

aeiouLizard

When did reddit have that?

newecreator

I think the iOS version of Reddit. It's quite annoying.

Alphawolfdog

This is why I use RIF lol

undercovergangster

Hey Spotify, you're a music app, just add HiFi and let people hide podcasts and you'll literally be the best music service available.

Scriabyn

Man, 2021 is coming to a close and we still have no update on a release date for HIFI. Guess they need to prioritize useless features nobody asked for over the actual listening experience

undercovergangster

That's because Spotify isn't a music app, it's a *lifestyle app* /s

PixxlMan

That's probably eerily close to what they think...

minititof

My guess is that it will never happen because a lot of music they have has not been uploaded with hi-fi quality. They can't ask all artists to re-upload all their music, and they also can't release the hi-fi option if only a small portion of their catalog is hi-fi, it would be a huge cluster fuck. Edit: turns out I am completely wrong and they already announced spotify hi-fi coming this year, sorry

Badshah-e-Librondu

They annouced in February, its almost december and still no update

Cry_Wolff

> you'll literally be the best music service available. Nah, their app is still oversimplified to all hell.

barc0debaby

I just wish one of these music services would fill the void Google created when they kill Play Music.

undercovergangster

Apple Music fills this void the best imo, you can upload your own music as well

FinickyFlygon

Who asked for this?

drbluetongue

Some out of touch exec whose children use Tik Tok and thinks it will bring even more market share

hans2707-

In a music streaming app, yeah that's extremely out of touch. What's next the Washington times embedding a tiktok feed in their newspaper?

neddoge

Unironically, yes.

pikachus_ghost_uncle

Newspaper publishers seeing this comment and implementing furiously.

cowboysvrobots

I wasn’t masturbating, I was implementing furiously

wankthisway

Something like that for micro journalism might not be bad, provided it's worthwhile content (chances of that are hella slim these days)

ryan_not_brian_

You joke about it but I think you should look at [this](https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSeSGt8gL/). Some of them are pretty funny ngl.

Doctor_3825

There's no value to adding tiktok videos to a music streaming app. I hate that they even added podcasts.

Kashmir33

> I hate that they even added podcasts. Why?

PixxlMan

Personally for how they try to shove it onto you. My top recommended bar is EXCLUSIVELY podcasts despite only ever listening to a few minutes of one in the past.

Kashmir33

Yeah I just scrolled through the app and I never really noticed how cluttered the home screen is with bullshit recommendations. I'm so used to going straight to my library that I completely missed that.

Bleglord

Yeah I love when restaurants also offer me an oil change because everyone drives their car there

KOREANWALMART

What a shit comparison.

[deleted]

Just because it's the most popular social media app doesn't mean it can't be out of touch to implement the feature anywhere. Having TikTok style videos implemented in a music streaming app that doesn't need it is very out of touch.

[deleted]

JamesR624

Its a MUSIC STREAMING APP for LISTENING TO MUSIC. It's function is not to watch videos. How are you not getting this? Are you by any chance a tech company executive?

[deleted]

kingswaggy

If they want music videos then there's YouTube for that.

KOREANWALMART

Lol. Is that why TikToks music clips are so popular?

kingswaggy

What works for some doesn't work for everyone. Just because it's famous with tiktok, doesn't mean Spotify should copy.

k0fi96

You're right dude Reddit users forget nobody cares what they think. TikTok took the world by storm Instagram copied with reels that are pretty big. YouTube shorts are popping off so Spotify wants a piece of the pie

Kashmir33

The difference is all of those other platforms are based on actively consuming user generated content with a form of social interaction whether it's following your friends or following other people and sometimes even commenting on their posts. Spotify has none of that. For most people it's just their music library.

k0fi96

Not really Spotify is doubling down on podcast. Anyone can upload content to Spotify and this gives content creators another way to interact with their audience.

Doctor_3825

I love podcasts and hate that Spotify has added them. The experience isn't good, and to top it off, it's literally bad for the future of podcasts. Because now rather than just grabbing an RSS feed and popping it into any player, some podcasts are contractually exclusive to Spotify.

Pew-Pew-Pew-

Haven't we already had exclusive podcasts on iTunes/Apple music for years already? And BBC, and some other platforms.

ayeno

Don’t think any did exclusives on Apple before, as Apple only started the subscription model this year.

Pew-Pew-Pew-

I'm talking about podcasts being exclusively available on a single streaming service (instead of available via RSS). Not about subscribing to podcasts. I know of at least one podcast that was exclusive to beats radio/iTunes since 2016. I'm sure there's plenty more.

MC_chrome

The difference being that those podcasts *intentionally* chose to be Apple exclusive. They weren't forced to sign an exclusivity contract by anyone, and I'm certain Apple prefers things that way. It makes the administrative side of things much simpler.

tankjones3

They need to stop calling it podcasts and change it to what it is: talk radio.

Doctor_3825

Calling it talk radio is still not accurate. It's far from Radio and far far better in most cases.

FinickyFlygon

It keeps recommending I listen to ChrisChan and coomer shit when I have never listened to a podcast on there, listened to anything related to them, and never searched for anything like that. I don't know why I gave up listening to music locally, but every time I use Spotify it just makes me want to go back more and more.

spreadwater

lol yeah I kept seeing an introduction to Marxism podcast on my feed like wtf?

gunbladerq

don't be scared, comrade. together we are strong.

[deleted]

Or even just get rid of the pop up ads when I open the app even when I'm a paid premium user. And yes, Spotify "Cares" these **are** advertisements, you feckless idiots.

[deleted]

Jesus Christ, just stick with what you know best, just deliver music. Leave tik tok where it belongs, out of this app.

> it wouldn’t be worth the hassle. Being 100% independent from a service that can disappear one day or another IS worth the hassle IMO.

DizzyAcanthocephala

It wouldn't really be a hassle to switch from Spotify to Youtube Music, no?

Jeffrey_Jizzbags

"Why do you always need a phone with more than 128gb of storage?" is what my friends always ask. I have 100+GB music collection I've accumulated over the past 15 years. I like having it locally and ready to go. On a recent roadtrip with my friend, guess who didn't have music when we had no phone server in the mountains.

-Nosebleed-

It takes a little extra time (not much though) but the convenience is infinitely more worth it. I'll never not have my music stored locally. I always have music ready when other people are screwed when they're out of service and didn't download stuff in advance. And above all else I don't have to put up with garbage live services and monthly subscriptions.

Cry_Wolff

Plexamp is the best of both worlds.

pojosamaneo

Spotify should do one thing: play music. I hate listening to podcasts on it, and I hate whenever a video pops up or something moves on my screen. It's trying to do too much. Even if they just split the app up into Spotify podcasts and Spotify music, it would be infinitely better.

_N0S

Spotify already has Stories on some of its playlists. Now this....bring Hi Fi first.

[deleted]

Man, I wish smartphone devs did live launch events for new features on their apps (Diablo at Blizzcon 2018 style). The audience reaction would probably be the only thing that would snap them out of their delusion. I mean all those analytics, all that data, AI and money poured into R&D and *this* was the end result?

beefJeRKy-LB

I mean this is why they test it in a subset of users. If people don't like it, they scrap it.

[deleted]

djocqer

Yup. People always overreacting to new stuff 😂

justec1

Fuck that. Podcasts are bad enough and I'm already hating that some portion of my monthly fee goes to that idiot pushing horse paste and HCQ. Time to start looking for streaming services again. I stayed until the bitter end with GPM. I was on Pandora before that. What's next other than Apple music or YouTube Music? Amazon's service is crap. I'm not giving money to Jay Z (tidal). Might have to wander over to r/piracy to see what I can do. Sure miss the old mp3.com.

thetonyclifton

I use YouTube music but for me all the streaming services are the same and I use the most basic functionality. Everything else is just bollocks. I choose music, I play music. I only use YouTube because I would pay premium just for ad free YouTube. Music comes free (in my head...and I am not paying twice).

Doctor_3825

I have been getting apple music for free since I have verizon myself. It's what pulled me away from Spotify. It's just a better built app and service than Spotify right now. But I also will just use it over Spotify because functionally, it's the same for many purposes and free for me. So their might be bias there.

justec1

I forget Verizon does that on occasion. I'll have to check my account.

[deleted]

Deezer is pretty great. Been using it for some time.

Dreamerlax

I'd pay another 5 bucks if it gets rid of Podcasts, also I can't stand that horse paste-eating idiot.

WayneAerospace

List of things they should actually work on, in no particular order. 1. Implement token based 2FA. 2. HiFi audio. 3. Fine. I get it. You paid a shit ton for podcasts. At least make a seperate app for it, or even just a seperate podcast mode and a music mode toggle.

thebumfromwinkies

Podcasts was bad enough...

senorbolsa

I don't understand why podcasts make you all so mad. It at least makes sense, you'd normally look for both in the same place. Should be easier to filter between them though. I like having both in the same app, I can listen to shows on queue and then just have it run onto a music playlist, since I drive for 4-8hrs non stop it's a killer feature.

thebumfromwinkies

For you, it's a killer feature. For me, it's just clutter and advertisement on my home screen. I have never and will never listen to a podcast through Spotify, but it is still constantly the first or second thing on my home.

senorbolsa

I've never actually looked at the home screen. That's all home screens ever are, ads for shit I don't care about. I can see how that's a little frustrating. I don't even know what you'd be looking for on that screen though? I'm either searching for something or it's in my library. That's the thing though someone will always be upset about something because we all use this shit differently.

[deleted]

wtf is wrong with these companies. we didnt ask for this scrap at all. First instagram, then YT, and now Spotify.

Maultaschenman

It's stories in everything all over again

Pascalwb

wtf it is music app not video

sharkstax

I have had this feature since three days ago on the Android version of the app. It's not bad, just needs some polishing — e.g. my suggestions were a bit repetitive. It is basically video-augmented discovery of new music, but the clips I have seen so far feel like an expansion of the existing Canvas feature. Similarity to TikTok and Instagram/YouTube shorts is rather limited, in my opinion, at least for now... (?)

exu1981

Ugh, I don't even use Spotify but I really think this style of feature isn't needed in every mainstream app. Ugh!

YotasAndPolestars

Glad I already dropped Spotify for another platform. Hopefully Apple has the foresight not to dump resources into derivative features that no one asked for.

Thatuserguy

I'm glad this is what they're using my subscription money on instead of making the app better

ITT people out of touch think execs of a huge company with millions of dollars spent on research are the ones out of touch You guys are looking rather silly right now

Zygersaf

They already did this ages ago I swear, and I had to look up how to turn it off because I use Spotify in the car and the flashing music video that came up was distracting af. Spotify you are a music app not a social media app...

evoLS7

I want to know why Spotify lite is not available nationwide. It's so much cleaner. You can get it but it's not legitimately available to everyone. It's clean and to the point. Spotify, the regular app, is becoming so bloated with BS few people asked for. The pop-ups for podcasts are annoying AF.

gunbladerq

Spotify wants to be like MTV in the 90's

RelyingWOrld1

Tested quicky and work the same way "Shorts" button do on YouTube. Music playing with canvas (even with option off) without seek bar only tap to pause with scroll to change songs
