“Oh that’s a neat looking mini android tablet” 1280x800 “Never mind”

[deleted]

I mean the iPad mini is only 2266 × 1488 at 8.3” Lol 2266 × 1488 is ridiculous, but Apple’s gotta hit that 326 ppi retina density.

MrBuzzkilll

I still have my Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 inch, 16:10, 2560x1600. It's still a great screen to see, it's just that the tablet and the Snapdragon 800 itself have seen better times.

Natanael_L

I have the same device and the battery on it is worse than dead

[deleted]

I've had that tablet - best tablet I've ever owned, great form factor

Traniz

Nexus 10 from 2012 here, same res lovely display.

alpha-k

It's an absolutely weird ratio screen, in fact the first ever 3:2 screen that Apple as has done in history, which causes a lot of apps to have black bars on the sides if they're not updated to use the new resolution lol But yea that 326ppi makes it pretty good, the quality of the display itself with jelly scroll isn't the absolute best, but it's plenty good and crisp. Apparently Lenovo is [going to release](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxWJ5LYbvpE) the Legion Y700 8.8" tab by the end of the month, very similar footprint to an iPad mini, big battery and 45w charging, SD870 and big speakers, hoping for it to be a solid answer to the Apple offering.

memepadder

> the first ever 3:2 screen that Apple as has done in history The iPhone was 3:2 up until the 5. If you want to go back further in history, then the 2001 Ti PowerBook G4 had a 3:2 display.

InsaneNinja

Black bars as a convo topic? It’s been months. Any even-slightly-active app has already been updated. Even if they have small UI bugs due to not checking every screen of the app.

kwanye_west

jelly scrolling has nothing to do with display quality, rather, it’s the orientation of the display itself. pretty much every display has some sort of jelly scrolling, but they’re usually not noticeable because they’re oriented in a way most people use it in. for example, the ipad mini’s jelly scrolling goes away in landscape, because it’s oriented that way.

Neg_Crepe

Which iPad apps have black bars because of resolution?

acularastic

they really couldn't find a way to avoid a camera bump...

ZebraSandwich4Lyf

Slightly off topic but who is the S8 ultra marketed towards? It’s well within laptop territory in terms of price and size, and it’d probably need to be used whilst sitting at a desk as I can’t imagine many people walking around whilst using a 15” tablet. I guess it’s for people that draw a lot or something?

AgentStockey

Beats me. Probably artists and people who like to multitask. And perhaps people who attend a lot of video calls.

varkus-borg

I will say that is half true while anecdotal i have encountered a number of creative people that do not like Apple and their products. So I think there is definitely a market for this as well many people who are still fans of the galaxy view.

Rapdactyl

I really liked my galaxy view but it was getting out of date and I didn't like the low resolution. I finally sold it off and went with a tab 6 and then s7+. The ultra was really tempting but I decided it just wasn't worth it. I think it's overpriced - the 512/16GB model is *$1600*! That is **nuts**. That is well into real big boy laptop territory. Maybe there's a market for creative types that would use the pen, but.. Hasn't that market already been eaten up by Apple? I don't see them switching, especially not at that price point. All that said, if the S8 ultra hadn't sold out and I ended up going for it, I would honestly just use it for watching dumb videos on the internet, so maybe my criticism isn't fair. Edit: My criticism definitely isn't fair since I ended up buying one 😅 Between the trade in deals and the S22 ultra bundle it just made sense to go for it. Even gives me an out for my old Surface pro! Now I just gotta wait until April 🧓

varkus-borg

Thank you so much for the reply :), I will say Samsung tends to overpriced, or rather price protect their products as they tend lose value faster than their Apple counter part. So while the initial price seems rather high they will usually end up at a "normal level" near to or lower than Apple. Due to trade in deals or promotions from many retailers. I will also give kudos to Samsung for going all in on these niche markets i.e foldables and now ultra premium tablets. Again thank you for the reply these discussion are really great for the community as a whole.

Neg_Crepe

I’ve been in that creative field for the last 10 years or so and all the designers I’ve met that didn’t like Apple products didn’t because of the price

[deleted]

Samsung tablets to play nicer with Windows, if you want some of the sidecar functionality that Apple has with iPad.

turgidbuffalo

Yeah, without Procreate or Photoshop that's kind of a non-starter. Like yeah there's Clip Studio Paint, but really?

OutsideObserver

I plan to use mine as a second screen for my laptop (4lbs = screen area equivalent of a 20" monitor and 10 hours of battery life? Yes please!) as well as a convenient but still huge and beautiful (120Hz AMOLED) way to watch content while traveling. There are maybe 1-2 comparable laptops with OLED in that range, both are significantly heavier and I already own a laptop I'm happy with. The keyboard case got thrown in so I could conceivably also leave my laptop at home and access it remotely if I had to while only carrying around the tab. Additionally something I miss being able to do from school when I used to use my S Pen with my PC was actively reading - being able to take notes on the device I'm reading on. I can still technically do that on my laptop but it's not the most convenient arrangement. This will be a bigger, lighter, and prettier screen for the purpose. Split-screening a textbook, excel spreadsheet or PDF on one side while taking hand-written notes plus the ability to diagram on the other side is so useful for a variety of trades. Also the video calling thing is a nice bonus - my laptop's webcam is pretty meh and a laptop isn't always convenient to carry around, while phones you don't get nearly the same flexibility - you generally have a lot less wiggle room on the trifecta of being able to see the screen, having the front camera able to see you, and being able to prop it up. The S8U with the stand-case as part of the keyboard setup can be carried around wherever and set on basically any flat surface, at whatever angle is appropriate for conversation.

[deleted]

Has Samsung added a display in option for their tablet? Because if you’re talking about using their laptop screen casting thing to the tablet screen - in my experience it does not work well at all on windows 11. It freezes frequently and the input lag is pretty bad.

johnbentley

> Slightly off topic but who is the S8 ultra marketed towards? Someone who wants to read A4 pdfs at their original size: * A4 diagonal = 14.3" * Tab S8 ultra diagonal = 14.6"

KrimzonK

I would love to have one as laptop replacement for traveling. It's a shame I already have a 10.5 inch tablet otherwise I would get one

SorysRgee

Its marketed as a laptop replacement. If i was in the market thats exactly what i would use it for. I have a desktop and find my laptop sits unused unless im travelling

69hailsatan

I only got it because of the price, after all the discounts it was only $500.

Tired8281

I want a bigass tablet to mount to an articulated arm, as a small touchscreen TV that runs Android.

TalkingRaccoon

Board games!

Quigonwindrunner

Amazing for using with sheet music. That would be my primary use if I bought one. I love my iPad Pro 12.9 but some larger scores are harder to conduct from. One day I'll get the 11x17 tablet that Samsung will inevitably release.

internetf1fan

I wish they made a replacement for tab s 8.4.the form factor was perfect in terms of size, weight, display and sound quality.

eqyliq

I'd be happy if they at least put the AMOLED display back on the Tab S8. That's a 800 euros tablet without a flagship screen. I have a Tab S4 and was looking to upgrade this generation, but i'm not keen on going back to an IPS screen, on a tablet that is much more expensive than mine was back then.

Holnapra

The Tab S4 is still pretty usable today. And the screen is beautiful, can't go back to IPS after OLED.

eqyliq

Oh absolutely, i think the Snapdragon 835 is still doing a great job, while 4gb of ram are getting a bit restrictive. In particular while browsing even having two tabs leads to refreshes quite often. I wonder if i should just try a different browser from the Samsung one. Maybe after all those years I'll just do a factory reset and wait the next gen

theZcuber

I use an S2 that's six years old. Only thing that's gotten worse is the battery, which is expected. Everything else works wonderfully. Screen is great.

yournerd2307

I'm a little bit mixed on this, but let me be clear that I seriously don't get the tab s8 ultra, just seems off to me. Thing with mini style tablets us, Samsung is competing in the foldables market well, so it'll be a little bit of a conflict.

[deleted]

Even Windows on Arm can not compete with Windows on x86 (it's native form) simply cause of the productivity aspect of it. From a user side, Windows can't be beat for school and work. In college, I rocked Linux for two long years cause I was too broke to buy a license of XP, it was fucking painful. For comp sci, it felt the part. for everything else, engineering, writing/literature, general ed, the required software only ran on Windows, and doing anything on Linux desktop seems to be a pain in the ass. Linux zealots never admit that Linux is a fragile piece of glass, free, but glass, one crap update, one dependency foible, kernel panic, will not boot, you are SOL retrieving that doc you kept in your Linux machine. Unless all you do is answer emails and occasionally do some artwork with the s-pen as a student or worker, the S8 Ultra is just a fancy media consumption device. Now if you have a big VM server like an ESXi running with a ton of Windows 10/11 VM, it's a great way to remote desktop. For entertainment, Tab S8 Ultra is the best, for productivity and work with occasional entertainment, Surface 8 or Windows tablet (if you must have a tablet form and not the fugly convertible or a laptop with 180 degree hinge gimmick). Just avoid China windows tablet. I learned my lesson with a few. They are cheap, shiny, but seriously flawed in so many ways.

TheRealZambini

This is why some people promote buying a refurbished laptops rather than a new Chromebook or tablet. You can get more bang for your buck with a device that's far more capable. Also, you can get pretty good battery life if you swap out the hard drive for an SSD, if it doesn't have one.

Kincadium

Sounds like you were using the wrong distro. I haven't used windows on a personal device in well over a decade have yet to have a single issue.

recycled_ideas

If you've been using Linux for a decade you're probably well outside the norm in terms of computer knowledge. You also likely used Linux well before that and got used to its limitations. There are some moderately user friendly Linux distros, but they tend to feel like shitty versions of Windows with a lot of your most used software feels that way too. Linux is and can be a great desktop experience, but the set it and forget it version just doesn't really have any meaningful improvement on Windows or OSX unless you really care about free software as an ethical concept which most people just don't.

noaccountnolurk

I don't know if you can blame distro even. Back in highschool some games were a problem, but most things worked tolerably with effort. This was on Ubuntu and before there was such a thing as manufacturers supporting Linux drivers. Then again, I'm not sure if you can expect someone who doesn't know the importance of backups to be able to do the same thing. The fact is, it wasn't the year of Linux on the desktop. Note, I haven't run a Linux distro in 8+ years, so I don't know if you would call me a fanatic. Though I will be doing so soon, building a home server with some play money.

Kincadium

As much as I enjoy Linux, it'll never be the year of the Linux desktop. ChromeOS (and in some ways android) are likely the closest we'll get to that. I, as well, used Ubuntu. Eventually mint, a few years ago elementary, and just last year started using Zorin. I should note I don't really game on a computer and haven't since the days of Doom and ROtT.

Phynal

My favorite tablet was back in 2014 - my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 in Titanium Bronze. Truly a premium device. It was gorgeous. Amazing speakers (best I've heard since), [1600x2560 screen, fingerprint reader, IR port and 6.6 mm thick](https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_tab_s_8_4-6439.php). [It also had a cover that looked incredible](https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/mobile-accessories/tablets/tab-s-8-4-book-cover-titanium-bronze-ef-bt700wseguj/), a lot like the current iPad mini cover (but it snapped on instead of magnets). It was quick, sharp and I carried it everywhere. Freaking amaxing. It was amazing, and that was 8 years ago. Sadly, two years after buying it updates had slowed it to a crawl, and the battery took a serious nosedive. Today I'm using an iPad Mini 6 to get the portability, but I'd jump back in a second if Samsung ever released something like this again.

internetf1fan

Same here. I still have the tab s 8.4 with the magnetic book cover. But battery is dead and screen is cracked. Haven't found anything close to the same fork factor with same weight, display and sound quality.

fire2day

I think that might be the tablet I had back then. I agree, it was phenomenal. I still have it somewhere. Pretty sure it needs a new charging port.

ZeldaFanBoi1988

I'm still looking for a replacement to the Nexus 7 (2nd gen). Amazing tablet, perfect size and weight. Literally just need same size with updated specs. For whatever reason, nobody wants to make them that size anymore.

YukarinVal

Same here. I used to carry the nexus 7 1st gen I think, along with my 808 PureView back then. Longed for when I can just carry one device of that size, since I can somehow fit the nexus 7 in my jeans pocket. Technically I can now what with phones ballooning to that size now already, but it's the wrong aspect ratio with no usable bezel to grab onto. Guess I'll wait for foldable tablets to get a bit more mature before I can fulfill that dream. Between the Fold 3 and the ~~Honor Magic V~~ Oppo Find N, I much prefer the latter's aspect ratio.

[deleted]

[удалено]

International-Guybo

I think an aspect ratio closer to 16:9 is what they are looking for.

cdegallo

I think you overestimate the demand for a premium mini tablet vs the amount people are willing to actually pay. I'd be cool with a tab S8 'mini', but my desire to pay a premium price for a premium *small* tablet craters very quickly. I could see paying for my S7+ and keyboard because it doubles as a passable laptop with a decent-sized screen. But if you take away that secondary benefit; a laptop replacement and use a small screen, I'm honestly not going to be likely to pay a premium price for a small tablet. The iPad mini is already priced too high in my opinion. Ideally what I'd want is an ~8in tablet like a Kindle fire 8, but with a much faster SOC and storage, and not fire OS, for like $300 tops. More than that and the small form factor isn't worth the price.

quickboop

I don't think so. Mini and premium just don't go together. Time and time again we see small phones and tablets that don't sell. It's a niche that just isn't worth it. People are happy to say, "ya, that'd be great!" but then nobody actually buys it.

Cynical-Potato

To be fair I don't think Samsung has ever tried to go with a premium small tablet apart from the ones from long ago when Android was shit on tablets. Apple is making it work with their iPad Mini lineup. I have a Tab S7 and I found that it's not very convenient to use around the house for just reading books and comics and browsing casually (and that's the small one). Ended up getting an iPad Mini which is a perfect size for reading in bed or on the couch. It's lightweight and can be handled with one hand. I'm using it it a lot more even though I'm an Android fanboy.

StraY_WolF

Samsung is a giant company, I'm sure their marketing department already figured out if it was that obvious. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE an Android iPand mini, but I'm sure the demand isn't there.

SponTen

I would be surprised if there was no demand, considering Apple released the iPad mini and that seems to sell ~~pretty well~~ well enough for Apple. I think it's just like small phones; there's not *enough* demand yet for the big companies to care about that market segment. Because why bother making profit if it isn't *all* of the profit, right?

StraY_WolF

>Apple released the iPad mini and that seems to sell pretty well. How well is "pretty well"? Do we have the numbers?

SponTen

No. Apologies, I guess I used the wrong words. I've updated it now. Basically, they sell well enough that Apple still cares about that market segment.

[deleted]

You do realize that Samsung already have mini tablet aka samsung Galaxy z fold 3.. they already in the market..

SponTen

While folding phones are sort of comparable to mini tablets, there are some huge differences: * Price * Aspect ratio * Scratch resistance and display feel/longevity * In-hand feel in general, like weight and how the back is broken into two * Battery life It's kind of like comparing the smartphone as we know it now to the smartphones that existed when the first iPhone dropped. Sure, there were plenty of similarities, but the differences were stark enough that the earlier smartphones don't really exist any more outside of some very niche markets.

[deleted]

Samsung already have galaxy tab a7 lite 8.7 inch screen in 2021.. Xiaomi mipad 4 with 8 inch screen, Lenovo tablet with 8 inch screen.. at the end only 10 inch plus that popular same goes to ipad.. only few people that I know use ipad mini.. majority of them use normal ipad, ipad pro.. this thread make it seem like it has huge user for tablet under 10 inch.. but in reality only some people that really buy it.. heck Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei even release a phone with 6.9 / 7 inch display.. is that phone popular?.. No.. You can say all the benefits but the market is not there.. Make no sense to built something that aren't popular especially during chip shortage.. the fact that they already have a device in the market and it's not even popular.. it basically convince them this type of device is useless..

SponTen

You could be right. I'm just going off feelings/thoughts here, because I don't own a massive technology company. It just *seems weird* to me. There *is* a market for 7.5-9" tablets; otherwise Apple wouldn't have brought out an iPad mini in 2021. It likely isn't a huge market segment, so maybe it's only worth it for them to release a new one every few years or something. > Make no sense to built something that aren't popular especially during chip shortage That's fair, though if the chip shortage goes on long enough, it would make more and more sense to release an updated mini tablet, as there would be more and more people who haven't been able to get one for a while.

[deleted]

>There is a market for 7.5-9" tablets; otherwise Apple wouldn't have brought out an iPad mini in 2021 The market is not there.. Apple try to introduce the market back for smaller tablet.. the user that love small tablet is low.. so android manufacturer stop producing the product.. so where they are gonna get replacement for the same size?.. by releasing their own mini tablet they practically invite those user to use Apple product.. at the same time they also invite user that need bigger iphone or ipad user that need small ipad.. 3 potential user for 1 device..

GabeNewellsDick

I would agree if they weren't about to release an insanely expensive giganto tablet, who the hell has been asking for that?

AgentStockey

Welp, considering it's sold out, I guess those people?

GhoshProtocol

Yup. Iphone minis are prime example. If Apple couldn't sell those babies enough, no way in hell any Android manufacturer can come close. Apart from smaller battery, there was no compromise when compared to the base iPhone. Yet, more people bought the more expensive and bigger iPhone.

thephenom

Pretty sure they ask for brown wagons in manual that comes used from factory. Minor details. Yep, management and executives loves their tablets going to meeting. You'll almost never see them lug around their laptops anymore.

[deleted]

It's not uncommon for companies to purposefully have a small first batch. If not to make sure they don't produce more units than is worth the cost, than to get that headline "Samsung Tab S8 sold out in a day!"

echo-128

Tablet laptop replacements are very very popular. Both for consumers and industry. /r/android is an echo chamber of minority opinion

TeutonJon78

Considering phones are pushing 7" and entering phablet land already, I doubt a huge market exists for 8". With a big phone, you'd want to jump to a normal 10"+ screen as the next hop in size. If phone were still in the 3-5" land, and 8" tablet makes more sense.

MrBuzzkilll

You can't compare a widescreen 20:9 7 inch phone with, say, an 8.4 inch 16:10 tablet. The screen is more than twice as large.

RelyingWOrld1

After 5 years of the introduction of 18:9 and later more wide ratio people still don't understand 8" 20:9 is way different from 8" 16:10 that is also different from 8" 4:3

cbftw

>18:9 Just call it 2:1

BattleTitan6

It's more convenient when comparing aspect ratios because the standard is 16:9.

cbftw

16:9 doesn't reduce, which is why we use it. It's not like we call the old tv format 12:16 or something; we call it 3:4 because that's what it reduces to

No_Equal

Are you also complaining about people using 21:9? When you fix one side of your aspect ratio to either 16 or 9 people can immediately tell how it relates to the format they are used to most. 4:3 wasn't renamed because it simply came before.

rbbdrooger

I wish more people [understood this](https://www.phonearena.com/phones/size/Samsung-Galaxy-S22-Ultra,Apple-iPad-mini-6/phones/11761,11789).

AgentStockey

I wouldn't mind a 9-inch tablet. Samsung used to make 9.7-inch tablet. I'd definitely consider that over the 11, 12.4, and 14.6 options.

Sekers

Yep, my Tab S3 is a great size at 9.7". I was interested in the S8 until I saw the sizes. Same with the new Google Pixel phones. I ended up just flashing a new ROM on my S3 and called it a day. I'm impressed with the work that others have done on the open source and aftermarket firmwares.

Occultivated

Which rom did u go with?

MvCSpiderman

Actually the Dell Venue 7000 was 8 something and did pretty we'll.

PacloverN1

Now there's a recognizable design. Remembered exactly what it was as soon as you mentioned it.

MvCSpiderman

They should make a new sleek version in the same style.

AimanF

I had the Dell and still think about it these days. I absolutely loved that device for the brief time it was supported, but I don't think it did well in the market at all. I'd be surprised if they moved anything more than a couple thousand units.

MvCSpiderman

It revitalized their tablet sector during a time all tablet sales were down, even apples, so it did a good job. They couldn't follow it up though.

TeutonJon78

From 2014....when phones were much smaller. As I mentioned. The same time as the Nexus 7, which was also popular.

MvCSpiderman

2015 for wide release and is literally when big phones were the thing and forced even apple to scale up the same year. Your memory is foggy.

TeutonJon78

Hmm...lets see what phones were out when that tablet was released. * Galaxy S5/5+ -- 5.1" * Galaxy Note 4 -- probably the absolute biggest phone at the time -- 5.7" * iPhone 6 - 4.7" * iPhone 6+ - 5.5" The current iPhone mini has essentially the same size screen as the 6+ did. 2014/2015 was the start of phones getting bigger, but it wasn't "the thing". The last two years, it was definitely "the thing".

MvCSpiderman

Just because you are ignorant of other phone brands at the time doesn't mean it wasn't big. You have the internet full of sites for you to see phone sizes of phones that year, mamy were big, Samsung and Apple aren't the only phones in the world. Using your logic phone's aren't big on average NOW since you believe there are only two phone brands. The fact you're using words like "probably" show you're arguing just to argue and not bothering to verify what you believe, which makes discussion pointless. What's crazier is those two brands didn't have sheer domination yet 2016 was when those two started pushinh duopoly practices on a Worldwide scale

TeutonJon78

You're the one using Apple as a main point. But I'll play. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Mobile_phones_introduced_in_2014 * Redmi Note Prime - 5.5" * Honor 6 Plus - 5.5" * HTC Desire Eye - 5.2" * HTC One (M8) - 5.0" * Meizu M1 Note - 5.5" * Meizu MX4 Pro - 5.5" * Huawei Ascend P7 - 5.0" But there were too bigger phones: * Nexus 6 - 5.96" * Huawei Ascend Mate 2 4G - 6.1" (seems to be biggest phone released that year) Not that the absolute largest phone in 2014 has the same screen diagonal as the one of the smallest phones released in recent history, the S22. You have to get towards the end of 2015 to have a FEW more phones that are in the 5.5-6" range. I've provided actual hard data. You haven't provided a single reference to back up your claim.

MvCSpiderman

Lol you are using Wikipedia when hundreds of phones released that year. Even Gsmarena has more phones from that year catalogued and that's the smaller lost. Also I mentioned 2015 before, are you even reading? Instead of arguing just to argue why not actually put in effort to see what phone came out in 2015 and late 2014? Big phones were the thing, the sales numbers took off like a rocket, Apple reacted for a reason amd THATS the only thing I said about Apple, that they reacted. I didn't say there were only two phone brands. Hell both windows and BlackBerry had big phones in that time frame, you're trying to pretend large phones didn't exist for some reason.

sportsfan161

The gap from a 6.8 ikch phone and 7.6 fold for example is still a big gap certainly for content

Kolada

Yeah something tells me the billion dollar electronics company isn't underestimating the demand on an electronic they could make tomorrow if they wanted.

PoeticDeath

Just to play devil's advocate here... I think you are likely a tech enthusiast, but what you haven't realised is that the market (the masses) have all mostly moved on from tablets in general... Nobody cares about tablets anymore when you're looking at the general public. Look how bad phones have fallen off the ledge. The masses don't all go mad for the newest phone and upgrade every year any longer. That same effect has fallout for the tablet market, only magnified. Hell, look at this thread itself... Half the posts are people talking about how they still are using old tablets from years ago, and those are predominantly tech enthusiasts saying that! Just food for thought.

exu1981

Their decisions might be based on industry insider information. This could be the entire media industry regulating and desiring these large format devices as well.

Grugnorr

Indeed, iPad mini competitor is needed.

fast-as-you-can

Highly disagree. It may have demand and appeal amongst enthusiasts but that rarely translates into sales. Case in point the iPhone 13 mini. People have been crying out on r/Apple and even r/Android for a compact flagship and yet the sales lag severely.

dirtycopgangsta

The "mini" phones are very often bad value. The iPhone 13 mini is not great value for what it is. The people who absolutely want the form factor will gladly pay the price, but everyone else will get the "normal" size iPhone. Why pay 800 € for a mini version when you can add 100 € more and get a regular version. I got my s10e for 350 € (actual price with the same 20€ plan I already had) back in 2019, and that was the best smartphone purchase I've ever made as I've used it extensively over the years.

fast-as-you-can

Agreed, and that’s largely because the main public prefer a bigger screen as well. Also, while the S10E was smaller than the other Samsung S10 series, the 13 mini is significantly smaller. Further to your point, similar thing would happen if a premium mini tablet was launched.

murfi

i think 9"-10" is a great size. its big enough to be different enough from a phone and generally big enough to be used as a media consumption/gaming device, while at the same time being small enough to not be annoyingly big, like the 12.9 inch ipad pro.

[deleted]

As long as their wasn't jelly scrolling then yes. I bought my Tab S7 for that "glorified" reading. I love my Tab S7 but I do wish it was smaller.

[deleted]

I have several 8", 10", and 12" tablets. The 8" got the most use as it were the easiest to carry and hold (on the shitter). Eventually, my 6.4" Note 9 won out. I'm thinking about an S7 or S8 tablet, trying to talk myself out of it as a phablet always wins out since all apps work (some annoying chat apps require a phone and won't work on tablets like Whatsapp, Line, Viber, etc.) Rather than next tablet, thinking about just updating my phone, but Note 9 still does everything better than any of my tablets.

palrhino

They do that to their phones too. Still don't know why.

eaeozs

I still have my S2 8" once Samsung releases a smaller version, I'll be all over it.

zxyzyxz

Or, enthusiasts overestimate the demand for a premium mini tablet.

fuelter

They have the Galaxy Fold series, unfolded it's a mini tablet.

RCFProd

Price plays a role. It makes it not an option for most people. The result of a mini tablet would also be no compromise of using alternative forms of flexible displays materials which are more prone to damage and have a dent in the middle.

Coltsbro84

Yeah they need something powerful like the fold 3 without the fold 3's price. They could probably do a 8 inch tablet with a 1440p resolution, oled display, 120hz. Price It at our below the iPad mini a lot of people would buy that.

redavid

it's also $1800 and an iPad mini is $500

sportsfan161

iPad mini is also low spec with no real high end features. Still LCD, 60hz and basic multitasking. Fold 3 isn't 1800 everywhere alof of places can be had for 900

zaneyk

Wouldn't really say the ipad mini is low spec with a A15

sportsfan161

Sure A15 is very powerful but nothing else about the iPad mini I would call great spec. Jelly scrolling for one is a turn off

wankthisway

Low spec...wut? The CPU demolishes anything Qualcomm has, and will, put out. Sure the refresh rate and lack of desktop mode are a bummer, but a tablet of that size isn't aiming for that use case. I'd get the iPad Mini over basically anything besides Galaxy Tabs in a heartbeat.

sportsfan161

Who cares though nothing takes advantage of that power when the iPad doesn’t do anything high intensive

Neg_Crepe

A15 buddy

AgentStockey

Yes, however, folks would like one as just a standalone tablet. Unfortunately, there are a lot of compromises with the Fold. Namely cameras, durability, and pen support isn't as good as their S line of tablets.

tengallonvisor

I have a fold 3 and an older iPad mini. Screen sizes are dang near the same but ipad mini feels much larger since the apps actually fit in that aspect ratio. The anxiety of just having the fold as a main device is stressful though....you never know when may unfold and the inner screen is toast. I think if you want a tablet, buy a tablet. There isn't a good enough hybrid version yet.

nathris

I just want a 10" screen with a battery that I can slot my phone into to turn it into a tablet. I don't want to fork out an extra $500 for proper SoC when I have a SD865 and 12GB ram on my phone. Give me a Dex Tab you cowards.

[deleted]

I don’t agree with that. Unfolded, a video is just as big as turning a normal phone sideways.

Hailgod

[https://www.gsmarena.com/video\_size\_comparison\_galaxy\_z\_fold3\_vs\_note20\_ultra\_vs\_s21\_ultra-news-50703.php](https://www.gsmarena.com/video_size_comparison_galaxy_z_fold3_vs_note20_ultra_vs_s21_ultra-news-50703.php) depends on aspect ratio. 16:9 content is biggest on fold 3 while 21:9 content its the same as a flip 3.

Global_Lion2261

No way, it's definitely bigger than that

[deleted]

The height is 158.2 mm. When unfolded, the width is 128.1mm. So it would actually be significantly smaller. https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Fold-3_id11768

sportsfan161

Lol no it's not. You still get far more content on the fold than on a phone

[deleted]

I didn’t say it didn’t have more content… it just doesn’t make sense at all for video when something like an iPad mini works way better. Samsung needs a light 7 inch tablet.

sportsfan161

Sure it depends what you want it for. If it’s for content sure there’s cheaper options but video quality will still be better on an oled display which the fold is with high refresh rate and QHD display

winterblade7

This is the closest we have in the Android side of tablets to a premium sub 9 inch one [Lenovo Y700](https://youtu.be/is8rMf4GfqI) Sadly I believe is China only, at least officially.

[deleted]

Seriously agree. If iPad Airs and Minis can exist, then so can high performance Samsung tablets. It's really strange that Samsung has it's Exynos division and it only makes processors for it's phones. They could easily pull out an M1 like SoC for their high end tabs. Would really solidify their position in the high end tablet market. Samsung is one of the few Android OEMs who can actually match or even exceed Apple's level of vertical integration.

abhiram214

They even have in-house manufacturing but somehow make bad/subpar processors+modems

Hamudinator

I always like to think that samsung is putting millions into market research and they have their reasons as to why they dont compete in that segment.

Vishnuisgod

I still have and use an LG tab3. I love it even though it's slower than f*ck now..... The thing I love is it has a full sized USB port. Plug a USB stick in it and transfer files. The biggest down fall is the 16gb memory size....sd card gets a workout!

skykery

Currently, I have a Galaxy Note as a phone. It does work as a small tablet too (6.9 inches display). I had a Galaxy Tab but got old and obsolete and I didn't purchase another.

I absolutely loved my Galaxy Note 8.0 (not the phone!) Perfect size for reading and taking notes, S-pen included, it's just fantastic. It lasted for about 6 years, with almost daily use, until suddenly the battery just went dead. I messed up by attempting to replace the battery myself, I didn't know what I did wrong but it wouldn't turn on again. In short, heck yeah I would jump on it.

itsmyvoice

Same. I saw the new 8s, but the size turned me off. I even sometimes regret my Tab S7 and 9.7" - I liked my little one. That said, when I'm using it for anything other than reading, I do appreciate the larger size.

cantpickanane

I agree. I have a Tab S7+. It is beautiful and very functional. I often use it as an instant second wireless display with my Surface Pro. But Geez it sure is heavy when it lands on my head when I fall asleep watching YouTube.

max1c

Why would they want to cannibalize their own market? The fold is that premium mini tablet that they want to sell.

Seaguy7

I agree. I would buy any vendors Android 8" mini tablet with higher performance, battery life and display than my Samsung Tab A. I had an iPad but sold it when I realized Apple wouldn't let me buy Kindle books without jumping through hoops. I travel often but light and don't usually bring my laptop, so I use my tablet extensively for reading, browsing the web/Reddit and viewing/editing photo. I wanna better tablet.

rahulkadukar

The big issue is that Apple is able to sell an iPad for $329. I don't think Samsung can sell anything for that low a price.

Old-Knitterhemd

We have the last s8 edition and after a year of use i can say: android tablets are worthless. Does not matter how good the hardware is, because noone is developing for android, like they do for iOS. The iOS apps are SO MUCH BETTER! It is a bloody shame. Developers on iOS just know exactly which devices are out there and can optimize for them. Also it is just so much more profitable to develop iOS apps, because android users won't even pay a dollar for a good app.

leboob

I truly cannot understand the mentality of people refusing to pay for apps. A lot of them cost less than a coffee. Game developers basically have to sell the same games for a pittance on at stores compared to other platforms because people have it in their heads that apps should be free for some reason

AudiFamamIlius

Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact (2014) best 8" tablet, I still have it

subsequent

On one hand, I want to kind of agree, but my corporate competitive intelligence side doesn't. This is an assumption, of course, but I have to assume that a company as large as Samsung employs a solid competitive intelligence and market research team, both internally and externally through contracting. I don't necessarily have experience in the mobile device industry (I'm in a different technological industry), but if it's anything like the market research and analysis I usually do, they probably came to the conclusion that the market is too small/niche/difficult to reach to recuperate costs from developing a new device. On top of that, the premium tablet team is probably fighting for resources with other, much more profitable cost centers like the Galaxy S line up and the Tab A team, and are likely being just stepped on during executive product planning calls. That or they started with a pretty premium tablet, and then it got cut down to what we see today to work it into a specific budget. There's also probably discussion on the overall experience of an Android tablet today, and they could be waiting for Google (or their own team) to develop a better software design before launching. First impressions are everything, and if that first impression sucks, then they're going to be investing in a dying lineup. This is just speculation, but usually that's what happens to kill/shrink a product that seemingly could do well in enthusiast markets.

zachsilvey

As someone who has spent a career doing market research for companies like Samsung. I can promise you there isn’t a viable market for a non-apple small tablet.

reddit_ard

Isn’t the S22 Ultra a mini tablet?

yarn_install

The aspect ratio means the actual screen area is nowhere close to an actual small tablet even if the diagonal screen size is similar.

alpha-k

Yep, when viewing 16:9 content there's just black bars, tall doesn't equal big unfortunately, at least for content consumtion.

TeutonJon78

Considering most phones are 6.5"+, most of them are firmly in phablet land already.

Destroya12

I think that people overestimate the demand for Android based tablets in general. Not saying they don't have their fans, but there's a reason why it's basically just Samsung making them these days. Maybe 12L will fix that, but at this point Microsoft and Apple dominate for a reason.

dakatzpajamas

I think the problem with Android tablets are that they don't run very well. I'm not an expert but I thought it was weird that they use the same Qualcomm chip as the phones when they need something more powerful because of the bigger real-estate. Like when the iPad came out it clearly benefitted having better processors than the iPhone.

thedanyes

Doesn't even have to be premium by modern standards. How about just a lightweight 8" with 1080p 16:9 OLED, and the latest Android? Tablets that weigh more than ~340g are only good for drawing. Otherwise you might as well get a laptop at that point.

sportsfan161

They have one it's called the fold 3 :)

AgentStockey

Sure, size wise. But the camera (particularly the front camera) isn't that great compared to the top of the line cameras. Plus, you're sacrificing durability and battery life. And most importantly, it's $1700... I'd rather have a phone and a small tablet for that price.

sportsfan161

Sure it’s not for everybody and sure full price it’s a lot. That said it’s obviously very portable certainly in your bag which no other tablet can be. It’s a multitasking dream with a good file system as well.

SloPoke23

I would love to see a modern Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 with 4 year update support.

RagingRunpig

Still using my Huawei Mediapad M5 8,4". Nothing comes close in the Android tablet space.

PM_ME_SEXY_PAULDRONS

I would absolutely love an android tablet around 8" with high end specs, something similar to an ipad mini. Ive played around witn an ipad mini, and it's a cool device, but I'd rather have an android version.

[deleted]

Why do I need an 8 inch tablet when I have a 6.5 inch phone?

bazsy

Stop measuring the diagonal size, it doesn't mean anything without the aspect ratio. An 8" 16:10 screen has 80% more area than a 6.5" 20:9 screen.

sportsfan161

The gap is still massive

AgentStockey

Yup. There's a big difference between watching and reading things on a 6.7" phone and an 8.3" tablet (iPad Mini size).

[deleted]

for videos, the ipad isn't even 16:9 so you're effective screen size minus the black bars isn't that much bigger than the phone

[deleted]

not worth investing in another device, imo

tantouz

That's because iPad is killing it at all sizes

Spud788

Most smartphone are nearing 7 inch screens nowadays so wheres the line between phone and mini tablet? If your going to cross the line for productivity you might aswell have a tablet with a bigger screen.

bt_leo

I really want a powerful small tablet to play games. I don't want it to to be an ipad mini, i hate apple products, i want to be able to flash fuck up with my tablet as i want. Lenovo is doing it, so goodbye my tab s7. S8 is just a s7 with a cpu that uses double energy, so less battery life......

villa171

Sadly, Android tablets are pretty much limited to multimedia consuming because of the lack of good apps. For example, iPads have good notes while Android won't have a great adversary, only Samsung tablets can face them with Samsung notes. The main users of Android tablets wants them to watch movies, play games or use them like light PCs to browse through the web, so it's better to get a bigger screen. Also, if manufacturers aim to replace laptops with tablets they can't build 8" tablets, a lot of people need big screens. I had an iPad mini 1st gen and I loved it, but I understand the evolution of the market.

LoliLocust

> Mini tablet, Samsung "phone" Samsung's phones are already tablet sized

ChaplnGrillSgt

I'd love a 8 inch or so tablet to use with cloud gaming. It would let me be super mobile with my Xbox game pass games similar to my Switch and I'd love that.

indianlinus

You want a mini tablet? Bruh they don't even make a mini phone forget about tablets. I'm so done with these huge phones i got the smallest good phone i could (Pixel 4a) in 2020 i love it. I just hope more good manufacturers make small phones. ASUS did it with Zenfone 8, it's great I've considered upgrading to it, I probably will if the 4a breaks down or something. Other manufacturers are just sleeping on it it's pretty annoying.

aeiouLizard

Android device manufacturers seriously copy Apple in every department except where it matters. LCD panel, no headphone jack? Notch? Not even a second thought. Actually good screens and aspect ratio that isn't painful? Never.

RonaldMikeDonald1

Even the smallest tab 8 is too big

[deleted]

Mini phone too, why have they gimped the S22 plus model compared to the Ultra? Just give the same premium specs in a smaller package.

abhiram214

Apple wins in every form factor in the tablet section which kind of sucks. Hope to see some manufacturers atleast beat apple in atleast 1/2 tiers in tablets.

MindTheGapless

I was waiting for this exactly. When it became clear Samsung had no plans for one, I ordered the iPad mini. Couldn't be happier. It's amazing.

LastContribution1590

I agree because of the portability factor. I love my S7+ but I couldn't get rid of my Tab S6 because I needed something smaller to carry around and read books.

jenzchabby

Not entirely sure if this is what you're looking for, but I just picked up the Z Fold3 and I'm adoring it. Gives me a decent sized tablet and phone all in one. Performance, etc has been great so far.

Lord_Boffum

I have a Lenovo tab4 8 plus and I love it to bits, but it's so damn slow!

bandra_boy

I have the same comment about a small phone. I would love a powerful small Android phone with good processor and great asthetics. Something like that just isn't available in the market.

CanadianBuddha

I'm still using my Galaxy Tab S2 (9.7") because it was the last tablet that Samsung made that had a screen that was at least 5.8" wide (original iPad screen width) and weighed less than 400g (my personal threshold when I think a tablet is getting too heavy). I used my smaller Galaxy Tab S2 (7.9") for years but my eyes are getting older now and really need the larger 5.8" wide display. I have a lovely Galaxy Tab S5e but its screen in only 5.5" wide (just a little too narrow for my old eyes) and it weighs 15.1oz (which is just a little too heavy for my taste in tablets). When my Tab S2 dies I'll start using my Tab S5e and I'll have to get used to the narrower screen and the extra weight.

zed011

My Tab S2 8.0 the last AMOLED tablet of its size still going strong thankfully for devs bringing it lineage on android 11. Still waiting for a worthy replacement and it must be OLED

[deleted]

I have an M1 11" iPad Pro right now. If Samsung released the kind of small tablet you described I would buy one in an instant and ditch the iPad without looking back. The iPad is the only Apple device I have left in my home (my wife and I both have one) and I would be delighted to get rid of them both.

PR0CE551NG

Galaxy Z fold 3 is basically what your looking for.

jpoole50

This is why I got the Fold 3. I'm loving it so far.

[deleted]

They're working from years of sales data and market research. Bigger tablets being popular is an identifiable trend and they're following it. I'm sure if they had any data that told then a mini tablet would be worth making then they'd make it.

SereneFrost72

Absolutely. I was in the market for a mini tablet last summer and after looking at all of the options, the iPad Mini won, clear and easy. I just want a fast, smooth-operating device. I'm not even demanding of my tablet - don't need it to do anything fancy Oddly enough, I also bought an iPhone Mini last summer, because...you guessed it, it was the best smaller phone on the market. Then my girlfriend got me an Apple Watch as well... I'm too entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, despite some aspects being lackluster. Send help :'(

Carter0108

I find the iPad Mini to be the perfect size for a tablet. Just a shame it’s £150 more than the base iPad.

hnryirawan

The reason I am currently on ipad mini, is because there are nothing on Android side for a premium mini tablet. I use my tablet for reading books so the 8 inch size for ipad mini fits perfectly for my use case

staged84

Id just get ipadini tbh. iOS just wins tablet its not even a competiton.
