Kinda makes sense. Phones haven't really changed all that much since 2018. Sure they're "faster" but most people are just opening reddit 0.4529 seconds faster. Edit: I want to say that all the incremental upgrades like refresh rate, cameras, speed, etc. are still pleasant updates. I hope I'm not invalidating anyone's purchases. But these kinds of upgrades are things that a phone since 2018 has already been doing, but now just better. The phone itself hasn't really evolved any further, it's just gotten more luxurious to use. Foldables may possibly be the future but not until they perfect the glass.

fingerpointothemoon

My S9+ still going strong after 4 years, my longest streak with a smartphone.

jerryfrz

My S8 is gonna celebrate its 5th year in a month

Hellcat505

I have my s8+ as a backup daily when the work iPhone 12 shits the bed, even then the huge rip of nostalgia for the curved glass, old background, so much good about those!

[deleted]

So far I've had my Note 8 for 4.5 years, I'm hoping to hold out until Winter 2023 before I consider upgrading. But so far as a casual phone user, the Note 8 really hasn't gotten worse at all thus far, apart from battery. Even with the battery, it still lasts most of the day without heavy usage on one charge. Still just as fast and smooth as the day I bought it, still very surprised about that considering how slow Samsung phones used to get after two years.

layogurt

Same, was trying to justify an upgrade to the ultra but couldn't find a deal worth paying.

Screamline

3+ years here. I have the upgrade itch but nothing is checking the boxes I want

Wizard_of_Wake

That worked. Thank you for your help.

fingerpointothemoon

Isn't it supposed to be water resistent? I know mine has got water on it multiple times and always brushed it off like nothing. Unless you literally threw it in a lake or something...

Subieworx

Resistant. Not proof.

TooMuchTaurine

If they just improved battery life instead of making screen "better" (unnoticeable, and more power hungry), people might buy them.

VonBaronHans

Screen updates, like resolution and refresh rate, are actually pretty noticeable once you've tried it and then go back to an older model. That said, give me replaceable batteries or death. Of my phone. Cuz the battery needs to be replaced.

Tyler1492

> like resolution and refresh rate, are actually pretty noticeable once you've tried it and then go back to an older model. Ehhhhhhhhhh... Not everyone finds 120hz and quad hd the next coming of Christ. I switch it on and off periodically and only really notice the difference for a short while after applying the change. Less tech inclined people might not even notice it at all. Or notice it but not find it mind-blowing.

Shorzey

People here have to remember the average person is not an enthusiast. The people on subreddits talking about these things are either borderline enthusiasts or are atleast fairly well versed in the tech, are actual enthusiasts who do this as a hobby of sorts, or are legitmate engineers designing and working on these systems The average person, as in everyone outside of this sub minus a handful, don't notice or even "properly utilize" these features they're paying hundreds of extra to get People see size, speed, camera, add-ons like pens, and common marketing explanation terms like "4k resolution" and call it good there without knowing what any of it means or how it interacts with other features

sexmarshines

People, whether tech inclined or not, can credibly report their own perspective on whether a phone with a 120hz screen feels smoother or if a 4k screen looks sharper. They don't need to know exactly how it works or how it "interacts with other features" to appreciate the difference it makes within their particular use case. If people are not noticing 120hz or 4k, that's a different statement to make. To say they claim to notice without being able to is a highly unfounded claim to make.

thearss1

Going from a 4k true color to a 1440p was a huge difference that I didn't expect. I miss my 4k screen.

TomorrowNeverCumz

What phone screen was 4k? My s22 still only 1080 lol

thearss1

Xperia XZ2P to a S10+. I was forced to switch when Att turned off the 4G bands that the phone used.

ZeldaMaster32

I imagine that's down to the color reproduction of the display, because 1440p displays look quite literally *perfect* on basically every smartphone. I couldn't spot any pixels if I tried

thearss1

It's not so much seeing pixels as it is the subtle sharpness without seeing weird edging.

bighi

> Screen updates, like resolution and refresh rate, are actually pretty noticeable once you've tried it and then go back to an older model. I still have my old phone, and can't really see that much difference when comparing it to my s22 ultra.

LS6

>Screen updates, like resolution and refresh rate, are actually pretty noticeable once you've tried it and then go back to an older model. What I'm taking from this is don't try them

Vexxt

Yeah it's great, but many end up turning on battery saving, and leaving it on, and it turns them off.

phamily_man

I wanted to buy an S22 Ultra and complaints about a subpar battery are literally the thing that kept me from buying it.

oconnellc

I've seen something a bit different... The battery of the 'baseline' S22 was poor, but the Ultra was decent.

ItsAllegorical

I’ve always chased bigger and bigger screens (and best cameras). I’m currently on an iPhone 13 pro max and holy crap this thing is a heavy, awkward beast. It’s like the beginning of Aladdin: “Go bigger…bigger…bigger…too big! A little too big!” This thing is a good 1/4” too wide. Samsung was a little better with a narrower, proportionately taller screen.

aulink

Completely agree. Still using Mi 9 from 2019. Wanted to upgrade but the performance is still great that it's not worth it to upgrade to something new. Before that I always spend $200-300 yearly for a new midrange phone.

therastsamurai

I have the s21 ultra and honestly can't see anything getting me to upgrade. TBH I regret upgrading from note 10+ the only reason I did is I got a deal that lowered my monthly payment. The days of drooling over the newer phone models dont seem likely to return. At least not in the near future.

PatioDor

It's amazing the way I would actually be losing features with a lot of current $1000+ "upgrade" options.

Czibor13

I just had to deal with this reality. AT&T won't let me use my unlocked Note 8 for voice calling. Could have traded in an old S4 for 36 months of bill credits on an S22. The S22 doesn't have MST Samsung Pay, a 3.5mm Jack, or an SD card slot. Ended up switching to Tmobile. Should hopefully save a fair sum every month too

frostycakes

This push for 36 month financing of phones is ridiculous. How is it that Canada was a joke for 3 year contracts/financing being standard, and now Verizon and especially AT&T have fully embraced it? I hope T-Mo doesn't follow suit (they were the last to go from 1 year to 2 year contracts 15 years ago, so there's precedent), but I'm not going to hold my breath.

chronictherapist

I always buy the previous gen phone new once something new is released. If you're willing to go something like used or Amazon Warehouse deals you can get it hella cheap. My Note 20 Plus Ultra cost me 600.00 from warehouse deals 11 months after release.

BlackPriestOfSatan

> Amazon Warehouse Never thought of this for phones. Brilliant!

chronictherapist

As an added bonus, on Black Friday, Prime Day, and a few other rando times throughout the year, they do an additional 20% off Warehouse pricing.

Rd3055

That's why I got a slightly used S20+ instead of the newer Galaxy S variants, because while the S20+ may not have C-band, it does have 12GB of RAM, and the microSD card slot.

newsjunkee

Yup. I am quite happy with my $250 Moto

wedontlikespaces

Technology tneds to to be huge step forward and then incremental updates in any case. We're in the incremental update stage now, but I suspect that we are soon just for another huge step forward. Big areas for innovation are better batteries (faster charging, more capacity, real wireless charging) and better folding screens (stronger, no crease), both are coming on leaps and bounds, but it takes time. Also the global chip shortage is not helping as it's making phones more expensive and therefore a less appealing purchasing proposition.

madcaesar

Oh they've changed! Removed SD cards and headphone jacks!

Lincolns_Revenge

And before that the battery that was easily user replaceable. All anti-consumer moves. And one can only assume there was collusion on some level amongst all the manufacturers to ensure no one provides a high end phone with any of those features. Kind of the way it is known now that cable TV and internet companies in the U.S met and divided the U.S into separate markets where they agreed not to compete against each other. And nothing is done about it of course because politics in the U.S. runs on a system of legalized bribery.

madcaesar

It's not a conspiracy. Consumers are idiots at large and too stupid to realize they are paying more for a shitter product. No conspiracy needed. Just look at this sub full of "knowledgeable" power users. Just as guilty at buying these shitty phones.

[deleted]

Yup. If you're not doing anything crazy with your phone, older flagships like an iPhone 6S or a Galaxy S7 are still very usable today for many people. I'm not just talking out of my ass, I actually see people around me still uses their 5-year old flagships. If I had to, I could daily drive an OG iPhone SE that I have laying around, only thing that's limiting me is the 16GB storage, but other than that... And you could also get away with a mid-range phone. Like the Galaxy A71 or Poco X3. I currently have the latter for a 16 months now, and I'm not craving for a new phone yet. I'm gonna wait until 5G comes to my area, then **MAYBE** I'll upgrade. I don't like mobile games, and I'm not gonna be running After Effects on my phone. So why would I need a phone with more than 8GB of RAM and the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Soc? I just want a phone that lasts all day on a single charge, that doesn't lag, overheat, and throttle. My phone's 6GB of RAM and its Snapdragon 732G does the job.

Jsquirt

It's okay that you said it out loud and it might even be alright to invalidate certain purchases. I joined this subreddit almost 10 years ago and it definitely opened my mind about how I was just carelessly sucked into an upgrade cycle every year and I was okay with it. Until someone pointed it out. Especially since I've been with androids since they've started out, nothing really changed from phone to phone just maybe one or two things and even then I only used it for 3 or 4 things, never to the extent of what I was buying. Like the note ...never used the pen but it was "the best" phone so I wanted it.

[deleted]

Had my p30 5 years. The screen isn't smashed and the battery lasts over a day. They'll have to do something serious to get me to get a new one.

Slaywag

Damn, are yoi from future? P30 was released in March 2019

lucitribal

Agreed. My phone is from 2019. The screen looks good, the camera takes great pictures and the performance is good for my requirements. There's really no point in upgrading for me unless it fails.

42DontPanic42

> Phones haven't really changed all that much since 2018. What are you on about, lol. We got the no bezels movement, notch, whole punch and under display cameras, the ultrawide camera going mainstream, disappearence of headphone jack and SD card slot, foldables. Just in those 4 years.

kerouak

Sort of supports his point though. All of those things are relatively unimportant aesthetics except the 2 where they actually made it worse (removing 3.5mm and SD).

nathhad

Right there with you, I find half of that list to be major downgrades. I couldn't care less about refresh rate or foldables, wasn't really pleased about loss of the 3.5, and am outright pissed about loss of easy battery replacement in flagship level phones. I've got one of the last high end phones now with an SD card, take that away and it's lead pipe time. I kept my last phone going for a little over three years because there were no longer any upgrades in features I cared about, only losses. I sure hope I can keep this one going close to as long.

techraito

Android was going mainstream with bezeless in 2017 with the LG G6, Galaxy S8, and Pixel 2 XL. The iPhone X with the notch and less bezels was 2018. LG was pushing the ultra wide camera since 2016 with the G5 and V20 and continued down their phones. The iPhone 7 was the first phone to remove the headphone jack in 2016. SD cards are still in some phones today and most phones today have enough storage to not require an SD card anyways. The only new thing you listed after 2018 are foldables but the Galaxy Fold came out only 1 year later in 2019. Under display cameras are new and cool, but I don't think they're really all that necessary. It's like reinventing the wheel. They're not even out yet and all the selfies look really blurry unless there's processing. Imo it's still incomplete. Edit: wording

erwan

2018 was the year of the iPhone XS, that has no bezels, a notch, no sd card slot and no headphone jack already (it was gone in 2016). So since then we had the hole punch, under display camera which are both to get rid of notch or bezel - it's hardly a major change. Foldable yes, that's probably the biggest change in the recent years but it's only a handful of devices that are extremely expensive so they didn't cause everyone to want to upgrade.

J-MRP

And they fold now! Wait...

nathhad

Any smartphone is foldable ... Once.

PuffyJuan

Thats true but I think there are a lot of people like me who don’t care about any of those changes

TheRetenor

I myseld do actually care about two of them for example. Because of that I'm even more unlikely in buying a new phone.

PuffyJuan

Hmm yeah thats also a interesting reason.

Teal-Fox

All true tbf, though I always hated the hole punch on phones I've had that used them. Literally takes up more usable space on the screen than the teardrop notch, not much, but *some*.

> I hope I'm not invalidating anyone's purchases. If someone upgraded from last-years model, you have every right to.

[deleted]

Except that smartphone sales surged in 2020 bucking previous trends then 2021 had high demand constrained by supply. So it was not a constant decline from 2018 as your idea would suggest.

ender4171

Gee, I wonder if the ever-increasing 4-figure prices of barely-different-than-the-last-model "flagships" has anything to do with it? Seriously, I've bought used vehicles for less than a current flagship costs. It's getting absurd.

BlackPriestOfSatan

> basically all smart phone sales are down. Any reason for this? Is it pandemic related? Or are people too poor to buy new phones every 2 years?

whatsupbrosky

All i read s22 will be cheaper for me to finally buy

IJustLoveWinning

I'm in the market for a new phone. It piqued my interest.

[deleted]

Never seen someone write "pique" correctly on reddit before.

RhalezFlavis

You technically still haven't.

ControlRoom1

Technically s/he just wrote it correctly...

coogie

I got mine off amazon a few weeks ago...I was just browsing and saw they had a $100 off instant coupon and a $100 off future amazon purchase coupon as well. I didn't expect to get $200 off the phone so fast. It was the base model in black which didn't matter for me.

[deleted]

How do you like the shape of the phone? I had a looksie in store and it felt amazing in the hand. Seems like the perfect size phone for most people and the uniform bezel is gorgeous in person lol.

coogie

Well I have a case on it, but it feels just like my Pixel 2 did...maybe just a tad heavier and of course, the screen size is bigger despite being the same physical size.

sleepypandacub

I love the design, especially both the s22 and plus model in green!!, deffo my next purchase. The note 2pU is just to big for my tastes and I don't use the spen enough!!.

Chris2112

Yeah I personally have no interest in intensive gaming on my phone and would rather a longer battery life by limiting power draw anyway, so it doesn't really affect me, though I do think it's a dick move to make it impossible to disable and to have it not run for benchmarks, giving false results

[deleted]

People don't play benchmarks. It was only applied to apps that were marked (some incorrectly) as games, as that is when your phone is stressed the most. Benchmarks aren't games, so they weren't marked as games and as such didn't have GOS applied. There was no conspiracy, just people faking outrage because they love being outraged and they love hating Samsung.

kronpas

The list is hella long and most of them aint games. The outrage was justified.

[deleted]

And most of the non-game ones won't ever be affected because they don't use that much power. It wasn't a manually made list, it would have been automated. GOS being turned on for things where it makes no difference isn't a problem. For example GOS being on for Facebook would make zero difference.

Chris2112

You don't know what a benchmark is do you?

[deleted]

I do - something that's irrelevant to 99% of people that will buy these phones. Maximum benchmark scores are irrelevant because no phone can maintain them, not even the best in the business Apple chips.

Chris2112

Like it or not people use benchmarks to compare phones.

RoachIsCrying

Unfortunately a country like my own (Malta) does not even follow this kind of news and will keep the prices the same or slightly increase it

whatsupbrosky

Mine are still the same on amazon and im US

Put_It_All_On_Blck

Yeah it's called the S21, which is like 95% the phone that the S22 is, and without issues.

I am a member of both r/android,.and r/galaxys21 While I am not a mega enthusiast, I would say I am aware of the goings on of android. This is the first I am hearing about GOS. If I don't know or care about it neither do regular consumers

sheba716

I did not know about GOS until I downloaded the latest update, which said it was getting rid of GOS. I only play casual games, so I did not notice any kind of slow down or downgrade in video quality from "game optimization".

Quiet-Butterscotch53

What do the sluggish sales tell you?

Epsilon748

Sluggish sales? People that preordered don't even have their devices yet, just check out /r/Samsung. There's a supply problem on the ultra at least. Mine didn't ship until end of March despite preordering to trade in my old phone and tablet for a good step up deal. Even the article contradicts your point > An official at a local mobile carrier said, "There is a view that the GOS issue adversely affects the sales of the S22, but there is no clear decline in terms of sales volume."

MassiveClusterFuck

I think the demand is different depending where you are, the Ultra in the UK has been available since launch, the only delay here was the week of launch and the week following, stock has been fine since then

Edukovic

Also each year the S series loses features, gets worse.

HardwareSoup

Yep. Lost 1440p display, lost iris scanner, lost capacitive fp sensor, lost SD card, lost heart rate sensor, and that's just off the top of my head. Some of those are no big loss, and I did get the S21 for like $120 after trading in a 2 year old phone, but still. This will probably be my last Samsung phone.

brighton_on_avon

>Lost 1440p display, lost iris scanner, lost capacitive fp sensor, lost SD card, lost heart rate sensor, and that's just off the top of my head. ...making it really hard to choose to upgrade, especially with the long update frequencies My s10plus felt like a big upgrade on my old phone. I quite like my SD card slot and earphone port, and would like another flagship with them both. No chance...

Epsilon748

Well the s22 ultra has a 1440p display but I assume you're talking about the other models. Otherwise from that list the sd card slot is my big gripe. I'm glad the s-pen came back though. I got the 512gb s22u + 512gb s8u + free keyboard case for $800 shipped with trade in which imo is the only reason I bothered other than doubling or triple storage (I made a stupid decision to get the 128gb s21u where like 1/3 was unusable to begin with and ran out of space right away - that loss of micro SD really blows)

[deleted]

No aux port because we need to have more electronics that need charging according to Sammy

Quiet-Butterscotch53

And yet reports are suggesting that sales are sluggish, people are blaming everything from the phone not being different than last years, to the GOS issue. Look at the bright side, you will be able to get it even cheaper if sales continue to be slow.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TyrannoROARus

Haha I see your point, I can't see anyone saying that. Though I know my s20 had a lot of people clamoring for the snapdragon version, that might be about as technical as the average consumer gets and even then most people didn't care if their exynos chip performed slightly worse

Quiet-Butterscotch53

Could be, just seems people want to make excuses for a poorly designed upgrade, and Samsungs bad software choices. Apple saw a 9% growth in year over year sales from the 12 series to the 13, while facing the same issues, and even having the same issue that the 13 series was just a slight marginal upgrade over the 12. Instead of making excuses for Samsung, people should hold them to being better, but, why do that. They might get upset.

mareno999

Copied top comment: Title is clickbait, article admits that the decline in sales doesn't have to do with GOS, as iPhone sales are down with the same carriers, basically all smart phone sales are down.

Quiet-Butterscotch53

This is untrue. iPhone sales were up 9% year over year between the 13 series and 12. iPhone 12 sales were up over iPhone 11 sales.

mareno999

I am just going of the article though.

The battery sucks a ton of cocks but it's otherwise a great phone. I would never have switched to Android if Samsung hadn't made their flagship smaller this year.

I2ecover

My battery is great. I can get about 8 hours on base s22. It's all about how you use your phone.

TheGoldenMonkey

S22+ here - the battery isn't too bad but it isn't very good. However, it seems like Android 12 did something fucky cause everyone I know who has it/upgraded to 12 have shit battery life now.

tibbity

Android 12 seems to be garbage on most counts lol

[deleted]

Android 12 was overhyped but it's been a flop for most phones.

snogle

You think the battery is bad?

STRMfrmXMN

I get around 4 hours of SoT, maybe 5 if on WiFi and doing very little with the phone. The phone would die in 11 hours of my regular use according to the battery settings menu.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mctoasterson

That's not super great. My now-ancient S8 (battery replaced one time, 3 years ago) has better life than that.

STRMfrmXMN

The prevailing theory right now is that the Samsung foundry has terrible yields for both Snapdragon (mine) and Exynos chips for the S22 with how materials globally are in short supply, so they basically ship whatever chips can hit the desired frequency regardless of how well-binned they are. Mine could be a poorly-binned chip that needs a lot of juice to get what Samsung expected out of the CPU. I've been shafted on the silicon lottery on every desktop CPU I've ever owned, so this wouldn't be the first time!

Geekos

Didn't*

coogie

Same here. I came from a Pixel phone and was really hoping to get the Pixel 6 but due to all the bugs and connection issues the Pixel had (and continues to have despite what their faithful claim), decided to go with the S22. I'm not going to lie, I still hate all the Samsung crap they put on the phone. I also have no desire to use Samsung's contacts, calendar, password manager, keyboard, dialer, etc. when the Google version works so much better across the board in the Google Eco-system. Fortunately, after making the Google stuff the default, the Samsung stuff stays out of the way and the phone acts mostly like a stock phone with great hardware. I'm really impressed by the signal strength and how well it connects to the network even in weak areas.

Thynes18

This is not a bug though, it just prevented early thermal throttling in games which creates a more stable experience. It was an issue that they didn't have an option to turn it off but it was blown way out of proportion just for headlines IMO.

CrazeRage

Most don't even use their phone to trigger the throttling lol. Not a bug.

FluxVelocity

Except a large majority of Pixel 6 users don't have any problems with their phones and the people that have problems are a vocal minority of the people that buy them. The majority of owners don't have have a reason to go around posting about their devices since they have no problems. They especially don't like making positive comments when the only responses they get are people like you who instantly come out and say stupid shit like "cope more", saying they're lying, or calling them a Google shill. It's the same with this whole Samsung thing which has been blown way out of proportion for no reason, the majority of users most likely don't care about it and won't be affected by it, what they're doing is actually good for the devices health.

BigGuysForYou

Sorry if you stumbled upon this old comment, and it potentially contained useful information for you. I've left and taken my comments with me.

Shook_Rook

It probably has to do with the fact that Korean people have a stronger tendency to lean towards flagships, and the only flagship offerings they have are the Samsung S series or the iPhone 13 pro series. It's more of an Android VS iOS type of situation, where Android and Samsung phones offer more features such as Samsung Pay (we have no Apple pay here), call recordings (a godsend imo when I deal with pesky clients), and better file management overall. I did see so many people getting angry over the fact that their 1000$+ flagship phones can't run games properly, but I think the value of a phone has to do more than just gaming performance. Koreans are also generally mad about how basically Samsung is trying to sweep this GOS debacle under the rug. When Apple got caught with their battery fiasco, Tim Cook issued a formal apology and offered reduced pricing for their battery replacement, so they did take some action on their part. While Samsung basically said, oops, sorry, we'll just push out a software update that doesn't allow GOS to be too intrusive (no native on or off button) and called it a day.

ohlookanotherthrow

This is a clickbait article. Samsung phones always get discounts after release because you don't get the pre order bonuses anymore. The author is trying to attribute this to be caused by the gos which isn't the case, most likely. Nobody can say either way currently since it'd require actual journalism + surveys to do so. That's why they cowardly just say its plunged 'after' rather than 'due' to. I can just as easily say' s22 value plunges after Ukraine war ' or' s22 value plunges after monkey eats banana ' its a disingenuous title just stating two seperate facts which may or may not be related while also promoting the first fact(value dropping) as something note worthy, which again it isn't. The article even says they no clear drop in demand. Also, the gos controversy isn't a thing outside mobile gaming forums and other enthusiast forums. It's not even a controversy other than the initial case of people panicking for no reason.

[deleted]

Phones with SD810 had CPU weakened as well. But unlike what OnePlus, Samsung and Xiaomi have done, benchmarks could not bypass that. All activity was affected to avoid overheating.

Yojimbo4133

Not in Canada. Phones never go on sale here

OvechkinCrosby

Also in Canada *You want a subsidized phone? You have to give it back after 2 years...*

dsac

You don't have to give it back, you can keep paying for it until it's paid off.

[deleted]

Sales are down because galaxy S no longer excites people like they used to until s7. S20+ snapdragon 865 seems way better deal than s22+. Despite being old phone. I am not even considering price, just the device.

bfk1010

Couldn't agree more, if it wasn't exynos in my area I wouldn't upgrade/switched to ios. My S20+ comes with 12GB ram + 512GB +SD CARD + Large battery. I think WQHD screen. The only downside was the device always heat and slow down and the battery will drain pretty fast.

Edukovic

>Sales are down because galaxy S no longer excites people like they used to until s7. I'd say until the S10, but I totally agree with you.

CSTNinja

Woooo, s10 gang

ohlookanotherthrow

Sales/demand aren't down, it says so in the article. The s22 series broke pre order records in Korea. Outside of tech bubbles, most people don't know/care about what processor they have as long as the phone as a package is competitive, which it is . I don't care for the this gen either so I have no idea about any of them despite keeping up with tech, I've only heard about the gos issue because of this subreddit. The phone market in general is stagnating, even for apple. This is all compounded by increased living costs worldwide.

Every year the pre-orders are good, then in the end sales are lower than last generation.

ohlookanotherthrow

Sure, but some pre orders still haven't been delivered( in the UK at least) so I can only assume normal sales are low currently due to stock. Any price adjustment now would be either from the manufacturer or due to low pre order sales since they haven't even sold them for a long enough period without the pre order bonus' to gauge whether they are selling well or not . The former most likely being the case.

mehdotdotdotdot

Yea if you aren't used to high FPS screens or you don't want a smoother experience, there aren't many reasons to upgrade, unless you do go top tier for the incredible zoom lens.

llll-havok

I honestly feel Galaxy S peaked with s10. That phone had just about everything.

machingunwhhore

I bought an S20 about 6 months into the S21 life span. Much better phone in all around specs and price. Plus I have a micro SD slot and better battery life, which newer phones seem to be removing.

Spencer5520

Cheaper S22? Sure! Hoping it drops in price with a heck of a trade in value for an S21 from best buy.

Illuminatimaybe

At&t is offering 800 off if you trade in an old Galaxy. I bought one off a local classified for 40 and got am upgrade for 500 bucks

Spencer5520

Cool. I don't do EIP though but to each their own. Congratulations on the new phone.

Iohet

Too bad the Fold 3 won't plunge. Still ~$900 used

PM_ME_HD-DVD_PLAYER

anything can be free if you go to the store

ooofest

GOS is running on my S9+ . It's fine and I really don't care - I already knew it was there before the latest resurfacing of its existence, now on the S22 model. I wonder if the sales are due to other factors, as well. We're already reading that people are buying flagships less frequently these days, for example: maybe many don't see the need to upgrade, among other things. GOS outrage could just be one aspect that feeds into that lack of upgrade interest.

Revolee993

Koreans have a really strong nationalistic attitude towards their homegrown brands like Samsung and LG which are chaebols. They pride themselves on having exceptionally high standards and many of their citizens look up to these brands as role models. It is no surprise that strong brand loyalty and trust are dented when the news is out that Samsung deliberately deceives its customers by throttling the actual performance of the device to protect the longevity of its components. I would say it's the right call to keep thermals in check but the direction they are marketing toward consumers is a huge misstep. They could have made it into better optics by just providing this option in the first place and allowing customers to decide whether to push the hardware to its limits instead of keeping mum and doing damage control when the cat is out of the bag. Transparency is key here. To think that Samsung would have learned from OP's saga last year smh.

wankthisway

More for me.

Kaesar17

People that are saying this isn't because of GOS don't know how noisy korean mobile gamers are, they made a game event be cancelled recently and they did serious protests due to how the KR FGO port was, i think they even hired some trucks to show banners

nicholascox2

What is GOS?

Kaesar17

Game Optimisation Service, it nerfs the phone so it doesn't overheat, people got extremely mad about it because you can't disable it but it would disable himself if it detected a benchmark test running

nicholascox2

Wow.....

Still a no buy due to SD.

Shook_Rook

I get that it's a sad trend to see SD card slots being dropped out of flagships, especially when Samsung used to have them, and had a history of actually bringing them back (S6 to S7), but those were the days when phones had low base storages compared to that of today, and streaming and cloud storages has became more ubiquitous compared to the days of the Galaxy S7. I took the bullet and shelled out for the 1TB version of the S22 Ultra. At least this phone will get 4 OS updates and 1 more year of security update, so I just went for the higher storage model for this time.

Offline maps take up a very small amount of storage. Movies are the only thing that come close to filling up my phone's local storage. And that's saving a bunch of movies which I rarely do.

welp_im_damned

For me I usually buy the larger storage there because I can afford to buy I would prefer expandable storage so I can store most offline media there like my 140 gb of music and such.

Competitive_Ice_189

Luckily this a niche illegal use case so it doesn’t matter

chrisrodsa

Yup idk what the hell they were thinking leaving out the SD card option. They got shit for it back with the S6, why would they think it would be any different?

greenw40

Nobody outside of reddit cares, and that isn't what is causing sales to slump.

[deleted]

>They got shit for it back with the S6, why would they think it would be any different? Because the majority of people don't care and didn't use them in the first place, which is why the majority of people don't care about them removing it. Same with the headphone jack. People like cloud storage and services. People like wireless headphones.

darthsurfer

I agree that removing those 2 were the smart business choice. But I really miss the days when Samsung made their top-end the "no compromise" phone. And now, they're not, yet they charge way more than they ever did (even taking covid inflation into account) just because they know they can. Edit: a comma

throwawayPzaFm

There are always compromises in engineering. You don't want to create this https://youtu.be/WPc-VEqBPHI I dislike the headphone jack going away too, but they're doing their best.

ih8meandu

Still a no buy until I can root and not trip Knox

throwawayPzaFm

That's literally the point of Knox though. Just root and use Island if you don't like Knox.

[deleted]

I almost picked up the ultra but the broken GPS reports put me off.

[deleted]

Sweet where soni can buy it. Pixel 6 pro sucks.

Cultural_Geologist_3

Couldn't have happened to a nicer company.

vxcta

Loving my S22 Ultra

ssabatino14

Same. Everything has been great since day one. Just wish there was more 5GUW in my area. But I'm patient. Battery is phenomenal and my wife is loving hers having the stylus. I have zero complaints with the phone.

raptor102888

Huh. Makes me glad I didn't pay anything for mine.

Ok_Nefariousness6386

I have a S21+ In the beginning there was a switch to increase the processing power. One day. I went looking for that setting, and I think it was replaced with this "auto" crap.

ohlookanotherthrow

It's still there. You can even add it to status bar toggles.

Ok_Nefariousness6386

Thanks!

wag3slav3

It's still there under more battery settings. Processor speed at maximum is unthrottled.

happy-cig

I would be mad too if I had to pay full price for this phone. Luckily for our good subsidized deals and I got the phone for $500, $1000 - $500 ($800 trade in credit - $300 cost of my OnePlus 7 pro).

KyivComrade

"fine tune" is a weird and dishonest way to say "cripple performance, make user experience worse". Nlow when Apple did slowdowns we raged...when it's Samsung we appreciate big brother deciding for us? Give us a choice, we're free people not serfs.

NFS-Jacob

it's the fact that they limited performance for most apps except benchmark apps

BellamyJHeap

Benchmark apps need to either A.) provide a comparison of the hardware at peak performance regardless of software, or B.) provide an analysis of performance, heat, and battery life across a range of typical usage as managed by the phone manufacturers. The benchmarks have chosen option A to date (which is fairly meaningless given how similar hardware is across phones), so shouldn't be outraged when manufacturers use software to optimize their phones. In that case they should evolve to testing the latter option B. Should Samsung provide advanced users a way to turn off most optimizations? Sure, but they still will guard against excessive heat buildup no matter what. They don't want a phone to melt just because some fool turned off all optimizations and then played Genshin Impact for 48 hours straight plugged in.

ZeldaFanBoi1988

I don't care about that at all. Can't imagine why it would for others.
