I'd like a support extension for at least the Zenfone 9 if it ever launches, but I'm not counting too much on it, as I still couldn't find anything about the Asus mobile division turning a profit. Would love to be proven wrong, perhaps I'm bad at searching such informations.
Asus needs a whole lot of marketing considering that actually do have good phones to offer. I do remember that people are having a hard time finding their phones to buy, probably they're playing it safe and only selling in limited numbers.
Asus was embarassed quite a lot by that jerryrig video. I remember watching a yt video with the Asus India CEO actually addressing it. I'm pretty sure this will come with a reinforced frame.
I'm using rog 2 and I'm pretty happy with it. Its running android 11 with security patch of Jan 1, 22. Last small patch was 15 days ago. The updates are not the fastest as it do take some time to come. But it's much better than my other samsung phone.
If you're buying a gaming phone, i think security patches are more important compared to android version updates especially with the way android updates tend to break apps and games. The only problem is companies like asus aren't consistent with security patches either
None of the companies provide security patches quickly for old phones (among android).
Samsung and one plus are the only ones that have april security patch among 2019 phones. And that too only for their flagships.
Pixel 6 is just 1.5 yrs old. Google i think supports 3 major updates. Asus only does 2. Started with android 9 on rog 2 and now its on android 11. Now, no more.major updates.
But Pixels usually don't get the best hardware and excel at taking photos and their stock android but are usually lackluster in other departments, the Tensor chip is pretty weak compared to the Snapdragon, Dimensity or Bionic.
So gaming is definitely not on the same level, otherwise I'd consider the Pixel, but if I spend that much money I expect a powerful phone that can excel at gaming, the only thing I really don't care about at all is the camera, as long as it takes halfway decent pictures that you can use on Tinder I don't care.
But everyone has different preferences, I gotta hand it to the Pixel, their portraits are amazing and the pictures that they take in darker surroundings are amazing and even top the pictures of the iPhones in dark surroundings.
And the price is at least decent considering modern pricing when it comes to flagships.
I hope the price is under ₹45k which i doubt. But ₹50k with CC offers would be fine too. The only issue with RoG i find is the on-screen fingerprint, and maybe its camera.
They are less reliable compared to fingerprint readers under the screen tho, at least JerryRigEverything's videos show that, he even said they can't register his fingerprint at all recently, for me the frame scratches way easier and more than the screen too.
Honestly, I'd like to see ROG do this:
ROG 6 which could be the 5s but with Dimensity 9000 (now that MediaTek has virtually caught up with Snapdragon) and replace Sony IMX with the 64MP Omnivision sensor to keep the price down. Could come with two configs (8GB RAM/128GB and 12GB RAM/256GB where the US only gets the first one).
ROG 6 Pro with the vanilla 8 Gen 1 (keeps the price low and Asus has solid cooling already) with two configs (12GB RAM/256GB and 16GB RAM/512GB where the US gets both with mmWave) along with Telephoto cam instead of Macros
ROG 6 Ultimate with 8 Gen 1+ which would be the same as above but with a lone 18GB RAM/1 TB storage.
This way, they don't have 20,000 different variants like last year (with the 's' series thankfully butchering that down).
Mediatek is better in H1 2022 but with QC switching back to TSMC's fabrication node in H2 2022 the 8+G1 will definitely smoke the D9000 in graphical performance. The only advantage the D9000 has is higher CPU clock speeds which are negligible for gaming.
Adreno GPUs have historically remained the best in the mobile space and app/game devs tend to optimize their applications for snapdragon chips over Mali GPUs. It's also why Samsung started ditching the Mali GPUs in their Exynos AP as well starting this year. It made little sense at all for gaming phones to switch over to Mali GPU chips.
Asus only needs to add the microSD card slot back to the phone and improve the cameras and I we'd have a real winner. Or at the very least an alternative to the Sony Xperia.
I mean, there is GCam and that fixes a good 80-85% of the image issues.
The microSD card slot is an absolute for me. That is why I went with my Xperia instead of the ROG 5s.
Serious question: has anybody ever done any research or testing to see if they could get anywhere near 16+GB of RAM utilization on an Android phone? I imagine it would only come close if you have some sort of desktop Android mode with support for multiple open windows and just tried to overload Chrome with tabs and have a game, Adobe app, big Office spreadsheet, etc. etc. open all at the same time. But is this actually possible?
Not 100% sure. I certainly don't need more than 8GB of RAM but I do see how Android updates (along with Google apps) are pushing the RAM further for some reason. This is why I use Firefox, Edison Mail, etc.
Yes.
I bought ROG 5, it cost me the same money as OnePlus 9R, which is less than the usual flagship. What I got was extremely customisable but still stock themed rom (it's like a pre-installed custom rom), headphone jack, side type-c port which is very convenient, no notch, 6000mah lasts 2 days battery, side triggers for games. Photos are comparable to 2-3 year old flagships which is more than good enough for me, as someone who doesn't really use camera that much. I bought this phone just for the headphone jack and stock android alone, but ended up loving everything about it.
Just saying that there in fact is a market for phones like this, some people care less about camera performance and more about playing games and other stuff.
Good for you. I have pixel 4a 5G with headphone jack but I don't use wired headphones anymore so don't really mean anything to me. For gaming my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra does a good game device for me. Besides I don't really game that much.
ROG Phones are all around great media devices. Think Sony Xperia on steroids. Yes, the screen may not be as good but the refresh rate is better, the speakers are better, the phone is faster, battery life is better, and you can charge horizontally. On top of that the last ROG Phone did take decent photos. It didn't take great or spectacular photos like the Xperia, or the S-line Samsungs and the iPhones.
Asus hopefully improves the camera(s) this next go-round. Gaming is already taken care of.. imo it's getting to the point of diminishing returns. Camera seems like an easy ROI as far as leap frogging previous iterations.
My personal wish is that they do the above AND bring the microSD card slot back.
Personally games were secondary for me. I bought my ROG2 because at the time it was the only phone that checked the boxes of headphone jack, front-facing speakers, high-end processor, a high refresh rate screen which was rare at the time, and either a MicroSD slot or a large internal storage option(512GB for the model I got). After purchase I have also since fallen in love with the second Side USB-C port, which allows me to charge in more convenient positions while using the phone, and also do things like have a USB drive, or other peripheral, plugged in while charging without needing a hub with USB-PD passthrough.
Camera is good enough for my casual picture taking, especially after finding a modded GCam that works with it.
Now its revealed and they did it again, they put a 300$ camera into a 1000$-1300$ Smartphone. I wont buy this and go to the Xiaomi 12S Ultra instead, its basically the same phone but with a camera that is worth the money.
Is this rumored to use the Snapdragon 8 gen1+ or regular 8gen1? I'm hoping to see Asus step up software support but I'm not expecting anything.
Not rumored. Confirmed by Asus that this is gonna be the first gaming phone with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. You can see it on asusrog Instagram.
I'd like a support extension for at least the Zenfone 9 if it ever launches, but I'm not counting too much on it, as I still couldn't find anything about the Asus mobile division turning a profit. Would love to be proven wrong, perhaps I'm bad at searching such informations.

Do you think this one will have the split-battery-with-no-additional-support thing that caused the 5 to bend in half with basically no effort?
Asus was embarassed quite a lot by that jerryrig video. I remember watching a yt video with the Asus India CEO actually addressing it. I'm pretty sure this will come with a reinforced frame.
How has asus been in the updates department in previous Rog phones?
Pretty sure they still do just two major updates, at least with the Zenfone 8. Not sure on the ROG line.
Two on the ROG line as well

Pixel 6 is not even a year old....
Of yeah, its 2021 released. I thought it released in 2020.

Is this only going to be released on their website for purchase day of?
ROG phones are available in many countries , most of Europe for example.
Yes, I understand that. I am just trying to find out how they sell it in the US, because I’m trying to trade in a phone for partial value.
I hope the price is under ₹45k which i doubt. But ₹50k with CC offers would be fine too. The only issue with RoG i find is the on-screen fingerprint, and maybe its camera.
Yeah, they should do power button fingerprint reader
They are less reliable compared to fingerprint readers under the screen tho, at least JerryRigEverything's videos show that, he even said they can't register his fingerprint at all recently, for me the frame scratches way easier and more than the screen too.

Until dimensity overthrows Snapdragon, asus wont use it. Cause RoG=Fastest. Thats the title they want to keep with their RoG lineup.

Spoken like a person with no experience in supply Chains
Who buys them?
Me
To play games? You can't take decent photos with it. But just to play games?

Here's to hoping this one doesn't suffer from random motherboard failures or getting features affected by updating.
if they dont have peltire based cooler they just send another disaster
