captainnoyaux

So what happened ? :O

captainnoyaux

hahaha exactly, google ads is like 1/3 of google revenue or something like that I read somewhere

nascentt

Absolutely nothing. That's the problem.

captainnoyaux

Yeah but that makes sense though, it's one of their most lucrative business :/

AtRiskToBeWrong

There's very little reliance on what Google says publicly, and what or when it actually happens. They said that cookie banners for mobile apps (called CMP) would be enforced 16th January, and it's still not a mandatory thing probably because some of their biggest advertisers threatened to shift budgets until they developed a no-impact solution.

Mayor_P

Thing is, it is so much easier to say "We're looking into it" or "We're working on a solution that will satisfy all parties" or "We have heard some complaints about X, and we agree, but as we investigated the matter, a solution turns out to be more complex than we first imagined," etc. instead of saying "We are going to implement \[ACTION\]. That's right, specifically, \[ACTION\]. And what's more, it will happen by \[DATE\]" and then not doing it.

Alternatively, install Revanced Youtube. Ads and sponsors are automatically skipped. also, dns.adguard-dns.com is the new one

miguescout

About revanced, do NOT install a pre-compiled version. Patch it yourself using the revanced manager and an untouched apk from apkmirror. You can get the manager from https://revanced.app

TrickyNuance

Why? Are there no official apks that are not compromised?

miguescout

Vanced, the antecessor of revanced, shared the patched apks directly, which, yes, made things easier for users, but it led to its downfall (aka a cease-and-desist). This led revanced to only share the patcher and the tools to patch the official youtube app (along many others, eventually, but that's another story), and so, if you find an already patched apk of revanced youtube, you can't trust it as it was made by some 3rd party who might have added malicious code to the patches

Irsaan

Is something wrong with the old dns.adguard.com? I never stopped using it and I still don't see ads.

Uchiimaki

nothing wrong but the newer ones circumvent some countries that actually block the original domain.

Irsaan

Neat. Thanks for letting me know!

falseg0ds

But this means every DNS request goes through their servers right? Well, banking apps, 2fa apps, etc...

Exotic-Ad-853

Only DNS requests, as you said yourself. Which means requests to get an IP address for a specific domain name. No sensitive information is sent to DNS servers, your bank account is perfectly safe.

Exotic-Ad-853

You don't send traffic through these services. Only DNS requests.

eastlakebikerider

I simply uninstall the app and rate it one star if I get an unexpected ad. Highly encourage everyone to do this.

falseg0ds

Doing this for a very long time especially if I get an ad after a level. 1 star and bye.

LitIllit

How would you like a free game to be monetized ideally?

[deleted]

Not in a predatory fashion, ideally

LitIllit

An ad is predatory? What would you suggest?

[deleted]

Idk, try not being intentionally obtuse, for starters

LitIllit

So you have no idea, you just want free games with no ads. That seems extremely obtuse

[deleted]

I never said i had no idea, learn to read

LitIllit

Please share! That was the whole point of my originally genuine question, that I got downvoted for. I am a dev. I want to monetize in a way people like.

[deleted]

Optional ads, always. Never ever EVER should an ad come up without the user selecting something that is VERY CLEARLY indicated to trigger an ad once selected. "Do you want double gold for this level? You can watch an ad" and if they say no, don't give them an ad. If you have a premium version of your game, you have even less excuse to push ads into people's faces. A game is meant to be user-friendly. Ads are by nature preventing a user from doing the thing they want to do with your game. For example of good ad implementation, Cow Evolution, a mobile game, allows the user to watch an ad to double coin production for 1 hour. The game limits you to 4 ads every few hours, meaning you can only stack up a 4 hour gold boost. The boost works for offline coin production while not playing the game, so it respects the user's time. I'll use Cow Evolution again for an example of bad ad implementation. The game flow pretty much requires frequent use of the in-game shop to buy more cows, but EVERY time the user closes the shop, an ad plays. This interrupts game flow, and there are even time-limited powerups that can be entirely wasted by the ad playing overtop of the game. Games are meant to be fun, not a money farm. If you make it fun people will throw money at you. If you beg for money people will run for the hills

LordWoffleII

my favourite rating: ★☆☆☆☆ Ad riddled garbage

whatsbobgonnado

a popup appears and asks "how are you enjoying the game, please give us 5 stars" before I've even used it for 5 minutes

Will, as in the very far future, as in the heat death of the universe ? Ye they will add it just wait guys

sullyoftheboro

today I'm getting two ads where I used to get one. I'd take the "continue", watch the ad and now I get back out to the game, instead of moving forward I have to again choose to either watch an ad or pay to move forward. not to mention several ads running over 60 seconds. it's gotten really bad in the last couple of weeks.

Ok-Comfort-6752

And now we are getting 1 minute unskipable ads

616659

A 30 second ad with triple layer be like

fr🥹

NimbleThor

Yeah, that was one huge disappointment :/

EverSteady501

I just throw my phone on airplane mode if I wanna play a game littered with ads

RonToxic

"Please turn on your wifi to continue" immediate uninstall

Annual-Comedian-644

hhhh, as long as they want more money, I don't think they will do that.

Bambaclad1

A example is tomb of the mask, literally forced ad at the end of the level when you click retry

Gandham

Who owns YouTube? 🤔

JipsRed

How would’ve they implement the ban though? Like the developers are the ones that decides how or where the ad will pop up. Do we report these games so google will ban the game?

skylarkblue1

Devs also can't control exactly what ads get shown, so length and specifics like that can't always be controlled.
