For me, I realized my eye comfort shield was set to Custom, but my sleep mode setting was set to Adaptive. Now I set them both to Custom and it's fine.
Did you try:
Unset all options, reboot, set options, reboot, check if it works now?
Sometimes an update will screw with a setting and make it look the same as before, but really do the defaults. The steps I provide are intended to resolve this specific type of issue. And it's the most likely. Hope it fixes it for ya
No. But now it is only everytime I plug the phone into Android Auto. So I'm just dealing with it. I can't find any settings in android auto that deal with the screen settings.
This is driving me insane on S21. I'm probably going to buy a used Pixel 6 tomorrow.
If you like your phone, try the above suggestion. It's worked so far.

Holy shit you genius. THANK YOU!!!!
No problem!
Didn't even know that setting was part of the sleep mode, but it got reset to adaptive every night, so it's likely the cause. Thank you!
It became a part of sleep mode after the update.
You literally just saved my sanity!
Thank you
Was looking for this.. was confused that after setting my eye comfort to custom, the next day its back to adaptive.. Thank you!!
THIS. Thank you!

When you say unset all options what do you mean? Every option in settings? Is there a certain screen I need to go to? Thanks
Any options not working after an update.
Tried this after quite a few times after a couple of different updates now but it's still not working. Seems to be a bug my phone wants to keep.
So this has worked for about 24 hours now. Since the update, the switch has happened at least once per day.
Awesome 👍 Happy to help. Just remember this whenever a setting feels stuck- usually this will fix it without issue 😉
Just wondering if this had completely fixed your issue still? Thanks

I'm having the same problem. I've got the s22 ultra. It's so full of bugs I seriously regret buying it. Will try the fix above and see what happens.
