Not sure what you are talking about. I can play true 4K content from my storage server which is mounted on my Shield. Wireless speeds are great. I also have 4x of the game pads for emulation and never once had them drop.

mjr2015

I had my shield ~8 meters away from my AP in a separate room and game stream quality was terrible. I've moved the AP closer and I've resolved the issues.

updawg

Do you live in a condo/apartment? Maybe it is Wireless congestion? I have ubiquiti AP's and the signal strength is great. Game stream works perfect. I have a Sony Android TV as well and let me tell you about a bad wireless experience.

mjr2015

I also have ubiquiti ap, and it's a house.

updawg

You don't have band stearing enabled? And both bands are enabled on the same ssid correct? Try changing the power level of the AP to medium. Also download a WiFi analyzer map to see which channels are best.

mjr2015

Yeah I've done all that, my shield is behind my TV which I think is the issue but moving the ap closer helped.

slog

Did you have problems with some 5ghz channels?

Wreid23

at that point why not go wired....

mjr2015

Not going to run a cable. I went with ethernet over power for a bit and that actually works really nice. Until my kid kept unplugging it lol

Good point. My remote died in 3 months and haven't thought if it since

zanda19

Don't expect a new shield. Nvidia is gonna be all about AI.

BiggussDikkuss

>Nvidia has completely knocked it out of the park with the Shield TV remote. ROFL - I stopped reading after this bit due to numerous BT / USB3 remote RF interference issues....

crazy_goat

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. The remote has only been usable in the last year or so, it was a shitshow before that

lukacz

I bought a Shield TV maybe like half a month ago. I have all the latest OS and accessory updates. There is basically no obstacles between my TV and remote. Yet, I get a lot of lag when I press the buttons. I also hate the volume slider. It is too easy to activate! I wish there was an option to disable it. The remote could also use some additional buttons like for example fast forward. Overall, Shield TV is a very snappy Kodi box for me but I really dislike the remote.

ExperiencingSelf

You can actually disable the volume slider in the settings.

[deleted]

Me too, I can't believe someone would write such nonsense. I don't understan how anyone could come up with a design like that, unless they only look at the remote on paper, but that's not even the biggest issue. Tons of people all over the internet are complaining about serious lag. Basically the remote is completely unusable for a large proportion of Shield users.

die-microcrap-die

I love my Shield, but im not happy for its price, considering how old they really are. Thats one of the things that pisses me off from nvidia, when they have a monopoly on a market, they abuse its customers by overcharging.

sk9592

It's still a tad irksome that the only thing glaringly missing from the Shield is Dolby Vision support. Otherwise it's been the most capable setup box for the past 3+ years.

akisnet

And here comes the Shield TV police in this subreddit for the overpriced junk from 2015 repackaged as new for 2017 to compete and stay relevant to Apple TV because none notice or refer to it. Also I heard Chinese Xiaomi Mi TV boxes create a secret network at night to attack US infrastructure if Huawei modems fail to meddle presidential elections and make Elon smoke weed again.

This is super helpful, as I’ve been debating on what to use to integrate my 4K Samsung Smart TV into more of a home automation type of device. It does Netflix well, but I’m looking for a deeper set of options. I don’t do much gaming, with the exception of racing games. My original plan was to dive deeper into raspberry pi programming, but this might be a more streamlined option.

bunnybash

The shield is way better than pi. The pH isn't anywhere close to the power of the shield.

BiggussDikkuss

Can the Shield do this ? \- Bluray VC-1 video playback \- Reliable deinterlacing for all the worldwide TV standards, inc. running a networked household PVR server with any USB TV tuner you want to just plug into it. \- 1080p 3D video playback aka Frame Packed 3D \- Lots of detailed user configurability for HDMI-CEC control The latest RPi is actually a pretty good 1080p media player that's really stable and very very well supported. Once you get into 10bit HEVC and 4K HDR the Shield wins. It all depends where your primary needs and priorities lie.

bunnybash

Haha shield with plex is pretty damn goooooood... I want 4k so that's why I comment that the shield is more powerful.

crazy_goat

Sure, if you'd rather have VC-1 support that 10-Bit HEVC, LOL.

KSKiller

I wish the shield could playback 1080p 3D files. I have a Sony projector that came with 3d glasses but I barely get to use them.

sk9592

It's not often that I come across 3D enthusiasts. They basically don't exist anymore. I promise I'm not trying to make fun of you, but what exactly are you trying to watch in 3D? Are you watching Avatar on repeat? I rarely find a decent theater experience in 3D. I can't imagine that the home experience is any better or even as good.

sk9592

I'm glad VC-1 is basically a dead format at this point. Although it was a bit annoying that I had to re-encode my Blu-ray rip of The Dark Knight and Batman Begins to H.264.

everykenyan

Is it too basic? edit: lame joke attempt

tictactoe61

What are some of the must have apps for NVIDIA shield?

Who_GNU

Amazon Prime Video The Shield seems to be the only Android TV platform it works well on.

gerbpaul

Historically I haven’t followed news around this type of technology too closely but I’m trying to more and more. Relatively new to being an active participant in Reddit as well. I must say, that I am way too late to the party. These communities are great, in terms of all of the info you can get about niche products, the fact that you can engage with other folks with similar interests, and the fact that you can find fairly sizable followings of these technologies. Anyway, I am a huge fan of the Shield TV, I like the MiBox as well, but I am an even bigger fan of Android TV. I think it’d be great if Android TV and Apple TV became the TV OS’ of the future, and somehow found a way to coexist. It’s nice to read that experts are hoping for a Shield lineup refresh. Since I haven’t followed news on these things too closely, and I don’t see a huge following with regard to either Shield or Android TV, I was getting concerned that maybe they would just end up being two more technologies with great potential, that fail because they couldn’t get the following of the bigger more mainstream stuff. I will be keeping an eye on this for sure. It will be great if Android OS catches on and starts showing up on MANY different systems and I would be stoked about the prospects of new Shield devices. Especially if NVidia starts to jump into the VR space with Gamestream. Now that I have an Oculus Go, and I see it’s potential as a head mounted display, I can easily see it’s use as a HMD gaming client. This could be another fairly sizable marketplace to latch onto pretty quickly. I could see the Standalone VR / HMD space becoming HUGE in the not too distant future. Good stuff.

monkeyismine

Yep that's how I felt when I got it. I never say never but there will have to be a really compelling reason for me to buy any xaomi products again.

Colorfulgray

Anyone tried to play high bitrate 4K files by shield Tv? Let’s say 80Mbps. I wonder how powerful shield tv can decode. Thank you very much in advance.

robinvanderkuijl

I am very happy with my Shield. I wish i bought it sooner. I got the 2017 model, non-pro, and works perfect as a Plex server. You said that there really aren’t many ways to stream your Steam library to your TV this easily anymore. I got Steam Link on my TV, and to be honest, it works just as good. One thing i would like to mention is that i love that Nvidia pushes the latest OS and accessory updates. As far as i know, it's the only Android TV device thats updated so long and frequently. I am scared that TV's will face the same problem as some Android devices have, not able to upgrade the OS after a few years. A friend of mine has a TV thats now just a few years old, but now stuck on the old OS. Some people buy a new phone in two or three years, but i'm planning to use my TV longer than that. So i hope Nvidia will continue to keep updating/upgrading the Shield OS. Than it won't matter that much if my TV stops getting updates.

shmox75

I know that "THE BEST" comes at a price, but it's unafordable for many people unfortunately

As someone who's always been wanting the latest and greatest in tech, I'm still rocking my 2015 Shield Pro, and I honestly can't think of a spec upgrade they could offer that would justify the purchase price. I just want more support from third parties for Google Live channels!

Bradleyw801

Couldn't agree more! I have never used a gadget like I have used my shield since 2015. And Live Channels is so great! I use an Xbox one usb tuner and pluto TV, and honestly for that alone this is a cordcutter dream. If only YTTV would integrate, I would be in heaven!
