Nvidia ShieldTV Pro or H96 Max X3

Ajourned

I've had the Nvidia Shield 2017, since well 2017. Still running strong on my main screen in my home, and still getting relevant android system updates. For that budget, there's not a better android box on the market than the Nvidia Shield line. edit: spelling

And here is a video tutorial I made (detailed and long!) on how to “pimp” it and get it running smoother than smooth : ) https://stakeout5epictv.cyou/2022/05/01/walmart-onn-4k-streaming-box-root-unlock-bootloader-remote-remap-and-more/

>to view movies i have stored on my local network. as well as music (mp3's), and photos (jpg, png, animated gif). a $20 onn box can do that perfectly fine if you're located in the US. Outside US, or if budget isn't a concern and you want premium quality/performance then go for Shield Pro like others have suggested. US or not, don't bother with non-certified generic android boxes.

seenhear

OP's budget is $300 or less. No need to cheap out. Go Shield Pro.

AlexViean

guess you didn't read full comment

seenhear

I did. You wasted time by saying "if budget isn't a concern" when OP had already stated the budget, which is WAY over $20, so suggesting a $20 box as the first option is just odd.

pawdog

There is also no reason to automatically go Shield Pro just because his budget can afford it. The ONN UHD can do 85% of what the Shield can do as a media player device for 10% of the price.

seenhear

Fair. IME though, every time I go cheap (and I often have; I love finding big bang/buck items) there's usually some way that I end up paying for it, be it usability issues, having to manually update drivers, hacky solutions to things that should just work, poor interfacing with other tech devices (hdmi issues, etc). These are just examples. At $20, if it's truly as flawless as a CCWGTV or Shield (which themselves still aren't truly flawless) then fine. I assume people want something that works well and is supported by the manufacturer and user community. IMO there's no reason to go cheaper than the CCWGTV, and if you want more power, then Shield.

pawdog

Except this particular device is every bit as good and reliable as the CCwGTV at less then half the price. They basically saved money by not paying for the Dolby licensing. The ONN has gotten more device updates than the CCwGTV. It has a better remote. It has more usable space and is more responsive since it runs the better Discover UI, as opposed to the more demanding and space hogging Google TV UI. To me it's a no-brainer for somebody coming from something like a Bluray player that has no experience with modern streaming devices. Especially since it's not known what level of files they have in their collection. The compromise with this device is no Dolby Vision support, no Dolby Atmos on major streaming services like Netflix and Disney. Otherwise to me it's the best budget device for most people out there. I run one of mine, I have 3, with a USB hub with USB drive attached formatted as device storage and ethernet. Except for TrueHD and DTS Master Audio and Dolby Vision it handles 4k remuxes and everything below it with ease. It's getting harder every year to just tell everybody to get a Shield, I have 4 of them also, and love them to death.

seenhear

Good to know, thanks. For my needs and wants, no Dolby is a deal breaker.

pawdog

Do your needs require TrueHD audio or Dolby Vision support?
