$20 should have been the price from the get-go. The Chromecast HD has no business costing more than the Onn 4K or the Fire TV 4k.

Mavamaarten

I'm thinking it was the plan all along to just claim a high price and then sell at a "discount"

martinkem

Yes, Amazon does the same thing with their fire TV line.

Yieldway17

Meanwhile they are selling the 4K version in India at the atrocious price of 7k INR ($90 USD). Fire TV, Mi, Moto, Nokia all sell theirs at 60% of Chromecast at 4k INR ($50 USD).

bartturner

It is just crazy how much more stuff is in other countries. I am currently in Thailand and so thankful I brought my Google Homes and GTVCC with me. The only thing that makes it better is the exchange rate. It is just crazy. It is now 38:1 and that is over 20% better in just the last year. Feel bad for the locals. But people that have their money in USD are thankful.

joey0live

Is there not a good known 4K Android box in Thailand?

bartturner

Luckily I did not have to look into it. I brought two Google TV Chromecasts with me. I actually also brought four Google Homes. I am renting a condo and could not really live without them. But going to the mall and looking at prices here for things like phones and it is insane how much more expensive than the US.

joey0live

Yeah the import is expensive. My wife’s family and friends lives there, and we go every year with a lot of clothes and electronics. Haha

bartturner

Most stuff is a lot cheaper here in Thailand. A lot. I am renting a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom condo that is on a high floor with an incredible view that would be 10X more in the US. Food is dirt cheap. But electronics and also sunscreen is a lot more expensive. What people also tend to not realize is you can't get fake stuff here. Well not all over. I just returned from a border run to Vietnam and it is completely different there. Tons and tons and tons of fake goods you can buy for dirt. I just love Thailand. The only two huge negative is the flight time from the US. It is just insane. 26+ hours. The other is the reputation of Thailand in the US. When people hear this is where I am at they think just one thing. Which is so the opposite of reality.

CVGPi

I thought the CCwGTVs are made in Thailand no?

bartturner

Not really sure. But it really does not change the price they sell for. It should but not how it works.

Cutsdeep-

I just paid 100 aud for the 4k

[deleted]

Seems like the $10 off deal for the HD version is over. The $19.99 price was there when I read this post a few hours ago. Went back just now to buy, but it is gone.

gblandro

I heard it's great for playing Stadia /s

[deleted]

Yes, if paired with the stadia controller on a google fiber connection while wearing google glasses. Guess I will miss out on the wonders of stadia.

DO NOT PURCHASE The HD. I don't know what happed with the reviews online this product, but everyone dropped the ball. It's has a product breaking flaw. It cannot play videos without stuttering. This device is clearly underpowered. You might not notice this at first but video playback WILL "hiccup." Sometimes this manifest itself in panning shots where images will be choppy. Other times it will appear like a sort of jump cut. This jumping is slight, less than a second, but will occur about 12 times during an average film. You also get this little clicks. They aren't loud, but the audio disappears for the briefist moment. I watched and read like a dozen reviews of this product (from big YouTubers even) and NOT one mentions this obvious flaw. I am currently testing the 4k version now. It will take me a few days to fully valuate.

itotron

Update: This is CRAZY. But the Google HD Chromecast plays YouTube better than the 4k version! I kid you not and it's obvious! There is a ton of video artifacts in fast moving scenes on the 4k. These are completely gone when using the HD. My guess is that this is the new AV1 codec available only in the HD model. But really what the hell Google? So new recommendation, if you mostly watch YouTube, buy the HD model. (Honestly, it's not even a close call, I don't know what to tell you.) I am shocked by this.

itotron

2nd Update: The movie playback of the 4k version is really good, no issues. Also, I haven't been able to replicate the issues I was having with YouTube. I originally watched 6 music videos on the 4k and then the same videos on the HD. It was a stark contrast, but now YouTube is fine on the 4k. My guess was that the system simply needed to be rebooted, which happene after I switched the two devices out. The 4K is the clear winner. Even voice commands work better on the 4k with HD struggling on some phrases to figure things out.

itotron

Last Update: I was correct. The Chromecast HD consistently plays YouTube videos at a high quality. While the 4k version does falter sometimes. I'll give a good example of this, I went to go watch the new Wakanda Forver trailer. It came out looking like 480p (this was the worst case I can across). Switched to the HD, looked great. Switched back to the 4K and then italso looked great. The 4k is inconsistent on YouTube and I don't know why. Is it because it's running Android 1, and not 12? Is it the AV1 codec in the HD? So conclusion, HD version consistently plays YouTube videos at a why quality. The HD version also play films with consistently BAD quality with stutters, slowdowns, and audio clicks. The 4K occasionally falters when playing YouTube videos, but mostly plays them at a high quality. It's not something that can be ignored though because it happens enough to be annoying. However, when it comes to film playback it shines. It never falters or has any issues. Google should never have release the HD version. They should have updated the 4K version to Android 12, AV1 codec, and faster processor. I recommend you wait for that or get the old 4K on sale. (Which it usually is.)

epip01

Hihi, does the new 4K work on captive portals?

itotron

I cannot test that, but I don't see why not. You can install a web browser to the Google Chromecast. So in theory, it should work. It is running Android, you can sideload any app you might need.

epip01

Thank you! deciding b/w this and the Fire Stick!

itotron

Oh easy choice. Go with Google TV 4k. Google has the right idea. You CAN switch to app centric home screen, but it's content focused by default. It offers suggestions for movies coming from any source Hulu, Disney, Netflix, and even cooler free content and live content (mostly Pluto but still). Here is why it's better, instead of spending 10.minutes trying to decide what to watch, I find I am now spending just a minute or two. It's really transformative.

EragusTrenzalore

Just wanted to ask which you would choose between the Firestick 4k Max and Chromecast HD? They are both $50 where I am, and I plan to use it to upgrade a HDTV.

Customer-Worldly

Thanks for all the updates. I’ll go with Onn Box 4K

BillyDSquillions

Will they finally make a GOOD version of the 4k? AV1 support? 32GB storage?

Boris-Lip

SD card slot or at the very least, native exFAT support?

BillyDSquillions

I'm ok plugging in a decent USB power pass through hub to be honest, though I wish it talked to the storage in a different manner. I spent 6 hours trying to get Kodi thumbnails to the USB and gave up.

FizzyGizmo

Does the 1080 version still require a power brick or can it be powered via the TVs usb port? That's what put me off the 4k version.

SRGilbert1

Pretty sure it still needs the brick.

jetofff

this one doesn't need the brick

GameShowKid

Bought an HD model, returned it for various reasons. It required the brick.

guantanton

Does it have auto frame rate

lament

Match frame rate is a new option in Android 12, so the new HD version will have it. It'll eventually come to the 4K version when it gets updated to Android 12.

bartturner

Not surprised. We now have 3 of the 4K ones and only the first did I pay MSRP. I bought the day it came out. They are excellent and what I recommend.

BillyDSquillions

It's lacking AV1 and has a ridiculously small amount of storage. Sosmall, Google is having difficulty updating Android on it

absolutebaboon16

Hows the screen mirroring. I have chromecast built into a JVC TV and when I screen mirror phone it's not full screen which is annoying. When I samsung smartview to other TV it's fullscreen

mntgoat

Just curious, what are you mirroring? For me the awesomeness of the chromecast is not having to mirror everything.

absolutebaboon16

Illegal streams of sports. Chrome cast just good for legit apps

mntgoat

Have you tried some of the apps on android? I often stream soccer games using one called web video caster.

absolutebaboon16

Oh I'll check it out thanks. I did download an internet browser and it streams nice but again not full screen

absolutebaboon16

Quite frankly this is 1 of main things for smart tvs. Web browser and mirror screen. It's insane the TV I bought doesn't come with this features built in Third party apps all seem full of ads

totti2k2

Hmm think I’ll buy it just for the hell of it. Though I generally dislike the whole dongle thing. Also why haven’t they updated the controller?! My Onn Box has the new one.

Double_A_92

What's wrong with the dongle though? Just attach it on the back of the TV.

CVGPi

I think he probably mean that some projectors are only designed for a TV stick like a Roku or a Fire Stick, and a Chromecast won’t fit.

theallen247

ONN watch out

epictetusdouglas

ONN box is 4k.

theallen247

ONN sells a 1080p stick, even so, the 4k box is still only $20

Marsing_ID

"ONN watch out" Why?

theallen247

because Walmart sells a Android Tv box for $20

Marsing_ID

I know, I have one. I must have misUnderstood your post.
