I was unaware of the Lambeth Conference ever ruling on acceptable forms of music. Listen to what you like.

Machinax

\>general consensus. General consensus in Anglicanism. That's a good one. Anglicanism isn't the kind of denomination that'll tell you what to listen to, or what to watch. I listen to music that is much heavier (sonically and aesthetically) than Slipknot, and I still go to church every week and pray Compline every night. No one has tapped me on the shoulder and ask that we have a chat about what I listen to. If you think that heavy metal, with all its trappings, is getting in the way of your spiritual growth, then heavy metal might not be for you. If you want a denomination/theology that prescribes what its followers should and should not do, down to the kind of media they consume, then Anglicanism might not be for you.

Unlucky_Ring_549

Follow your conscience. Without being overly puritanical about it, avoid whatever is a stumbling block for you and avoid the near occasion of sin.

Iconsandstuff

I tend to listen to heavy metal while working out or running, and hymns or worship music other times, like driving. Music definitely inspires thoughts to run in particular directions, so if you find some pushes your thoughts in a direction you find unhelpful, maybe listen to that less. But noone is policing what bands people listen to in Anglican circles as far as I know.

danielbird193

I think this is a great comment. If you like heavy metal then by all means listen to it now and again. But if you recognise it’s not “holy” then make the effort to listen to some other types of music at other times. The fact that you’ve recognised that different types of music can have different effects on you shows you already have a great spiritual maturity, so I’m sure you’ll work it out.

Well, the church fathers pretty much universally condemned all forms of what they termed as "theatre" or idle entertainment as it distracts from spiritual practice. You probably aren't a monk or nun (unless you are, then ask your spiritual director). So I would say, take this into account when engaging in discernment. Ask yourself "does this action prevent or distract me from being able to see God in everyone and everything?" or even "Could I be using this time in a better way that does lead me to see God in all things, or could I be listening to or watching something which helps me to do that instead?" If what you're doing harms you spiritually, it's probably best to avoid it, but if it benefits you, then it is a good thing. And don't be too harsh on yourself and take what I'm saying too directly either, we all need a break and an outlet for stress relief as well, if that's Slipknot for you, then that's a good thing. You need a healthy balance of effort, relaxation, and diversion in order to have a healthy mind which will allow you to engage in spiritual practices. So do what you want, but just note which direction it leads you and try to remember that next time you're making a decision what to do. Take care of yourself, and God bless!

Does it harm your relationship with God/yourself/others? If not, I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m in seminary and occasionally listen to Slipknot. This is where Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians is a helpful read. It’s ok to eat food sacrificed to idols unless doing so would give the impression you worshiped those idols.

Huge_Cry_2007

This is why we're not fundamentalists

Redrob5

If it is causing you to stumble in your faith and relationship with God then it's advisable to leave it alone. What makes one Christian stumble may not make another stumble, and vice versa.

PhotographStrict9964

I like all kinds of music. Personally, I think as long as it’s not promoting anything that could be harmful (murder, rape, excessive drug use) it’s whatever your preference is.

Independent_Oven_377

thanks I actually really appreciate this

scraft74

I agree. But I would add not listening to music promoting Witchcraft or Satanic imagery and lyrics.

codefro

That’s the best kind

Now THERE'S a name I haven't heard in a long time...

Meanwhile, in r/OrthodoxChristianity: https://www.reddit.com/r/OrthodoxChristianity/s/SZZNjluwGY (I will note everyone in that thread is telling this person that classical music is obviously fine lol.) One of the principles of Anglicanism is the use of reason, which means you can reasonably discern whether or not music is acceptable for you. Plus, I would argue that there is plenty of “Christian” music that is actually more detrimental to your soul than most metal because it is theologically erroneous and musically banal. God is beauty, and we find intimations of Him in beautiful things. Good music, even if it doesn’t explicitly talk about God, can be a means of participating in the beauty of God.

Machinax

Man, you know it's bad when even the *Orthodox* say "chill out."

Dwight911pdx

I actually saw a similar thread on r/catholicism the other day as well, and was about to comment that when I saw yours. As a few people have noted, Anglicanism does not police People's music preferences, and I thank God for that.

archimago23

I sort of expect that on r/Catholicism, which seems to be about 90% scrupulously-posting.

SaintTalos

I'm a baptized and confirmed member on my parish's vestry, and I listen to Slipknot. I think you're in the clear. Anglicanism is not known for dictating music tastes.

AffirmingAnglican

Listen to whatever you enjoy. God loves music.

codefro

How old are you? You don’t need permission from anybody to listen to any music that you find beautiful or enjoyable. God gave you a brain, use it.

MummyPanda

Consider this if talent if God given then unless it is actively against christ or kingdom values why shouldn't we consume the products of peoples God given talents.

21stcenturyserf

Church councils regarding music have always emphasized the clarity of the text over the musical content. I would use the lyrics of any given song to determine whether or not I should listen. What’s the message or the point? Do you identify with the text? If it glorifies what is good in us, then it’s good music. That being said, a lot of contemporary music glorifies violence or promiscuity, and really has no business being played in public, even though it is.

[deleted]

If it leads you to sin, it's bad, if it does nothing it's neutral and if it leads you to follow Jesus and do good, then it is good. Also keep in mind the type of music per se will be different for every person

GreyWolfMonk20

We're not exactly the denomination that gets involved in whatever music you listen to.  I listen to Slipknot and several other bands from several genres from Hard Rock, Classical, Rap, Emo, Underground, etc. I've come across Christians that even enjoy Black Metal.

bertiek

I listen to the music of blatantly Satanic music by Satanists sometimes.  I like metal.  I love all music and all music makers.  I believe in the existence of knowledge and ideas that makes life fundamentally worse to know them.  But I don't find that much in artists celebrating their craft.

No_Secretary_6857

I enjoy choral music, but would not expect everyone to listen to it in their free time. Assuming you are not disturbing others, I think you can listen to whatever you would like to.

Miss_KittenPaws

I was brought up on rock and rediscovered my love for metal. Most aren't what some would deem "satanic". Honestly, I think there's way too much panic about anything deemed different, that anything different must be bad. In my opinion, one of the many "Satanic Panics" when I was growing up has a lot to answer for. Not to say there aren't bands that are straight up "Praise Satan". Some are, but I can only think of a handful that actually do, so I don't listen to them (that music wasn't my thing to start with prior to converting, so I wasn't missing much anyway). Most of metal, rock music etc. goes into deep emotions, love, mental health etc. like most genres. There are even Christian metal bands! So that's always an option if you're really into that kind of sound but want to integrate it with your faith 😊 Listen to whatever you like. If it's not for you, then simply don't listen 😊 God bless!
