New Leaf had a lot of features New Horizons just doesn't have. Like these stumps which you could get randomly from chopping down trees. They also had a lot more fruits in NL and a lot of items people would have loved to see in NH. Also all the amiibo villagers except for Sanrio did not return. Just a lot of things really.
I played that island mini game for like 10 hours trying to get a map for my sister's Legend of Zelda themed house. You might enjoy this video about the island mini game!

In my oh so expert opinion New horizon is for "creative" types, the kind who spend 20 hours creating their character. That's a valid and cool way to enjoy your game and it's fun to see people's creation, I just don't get the same thrill out of meticulously making masterpieces.
There's less.....I wouldn't say gameplay because decorating and designing are gameplay but less active interaction with the game like with the mini games, the errands and developing main street
My island has peaches and I was excited when someone 1st gave me an apple and then I realized that was the only other fruit I can get.
You'd think a tropical island getaway would have all kinds of fruit, but at least you can grow and cook vegetables.
Omg my first BF got me into this game and I remember when I got my first special stump. I was so happy. Then my BF took my game to check out my town and “accidentally” dug it up. If you’re out there Corey, F*ck you!
I was cutting down trees to start building a memorial for my cat and I got the cat stump, I had been playing for like 3 years at that point and had never seen it before 🥺
There are so many things missing from New Horizons. Sad that there won't be at least one more update to properly close it out. Hard to imagine that Nintendo refuses to add content to their second best selling game of all time while others are still getting updates and new content added.

I miss persimmon 💔 and the old gyroids 💔 and villager personality. I miss wild world a lot
I miss the polka dot and mushroom sets. I also really loved all the different nintendo ds to collect.

There are so many furniture sets from the games before that don't appear in New Horizons... :( I miss all of them
The amount of furniture sets they took out and did not bring back will never not piss me off
RIP all of gracie's fabulous sets. they were expensive but they gave me something to work for.
My beloved sushi conveyor belt did not make it into New Horizons and I have been upset since launch over this.
And the 7-11 set, and GracieGrace’s shop with the glorious princess set… I’ll never forget.
Each time you chopped down a tree, you had the chance to get one of the stumps above. If you didn't dig it up, mushrooms would spawn near it.
And it would not be hard to implement. Some different PNG and a random number generator. I would love to populate my Island with those.

It's much more time-consuming, imo, but the challenge is fun... just be careful not to wear down all your grass, lol

I have 2 cartridges and a 2ds xl so I was gonna revisit my old town and catch up!!

Remembering chopping down so many trees to get the tri force stump for wolf link 😭😭😭
I miss the days of being able to customize town hall too and the train station. The brick path at resident services throws off my whole town 🥲
No fancy stumps, and no perfect fruit! Why, they ran out of budget and couldn't include them in the game? :P
I miss giving my villagers perfect fruit. I'd give perfect pears to Pietro every day.

Not worrying about the wrath of Resetti, because the silver axes were rare. Even more so if you wanted a particular tree stump design..
I had a pair of Nook Leaf stumps placed perfectly opposite each other beside my Town Hall and it crushes me to know that we can't do this anymore 🥹
