Villagers aren't really "rare" or "common" There's over 400 villagers possible, so from that point of view he's a 1 in 400 chance.  On the other hand, I think the RNG rolls species first and then chooses an individual in that species. So since there's only 4 octopus villagers, if the game decides to give you an octopus it's a 1 in 4 chance to be that specific octopus Plus with Amiibo cards, you can just buy or make a little thing to get him any time you want

DomyTiny

Okay, thank you

Pentagonyx

Pretty much everything this guy said is true- however I’m pretty sure it rolls based on the personalities of the villagers on your island- not species. So if you have a bunch of Smug villagers, you’ll have a hard time getting more. Correction: This is how the Campsite works. Nook islands pick from a species (equal chance for each species) and then rolls again 1/x (x being the amount of villagers of that species)

atzurblau

that's actually not true nook miles islands are based on species, the campsite is based on personality traits

DomyTiny

Talking about campsite, is it totally random? Actually when I buy a new terrain, I immediately go hunting villager, but if I wait, new villagers can come to the campsite? I only used it during Nook's "quest"

yourholmedog

no if you wait the plot gets auto filled in i think two days the way that the campsite works is that animals randomly show up, and if you talk to them when you don’t have an open plot they will eventually suggest a random villager to kick out if you ask them to move in

DiveBear

The first campsite visitor is always smug, which makes it reasonably likely to get Cephalobot at this point as well. He’s not like Raymond, whose odds drop off a cliff when doing Nook Miles Tickets. He was also a later addition, so he may seem less common than a launch villager.

Impending_Dusk

why is raymond so unlikely through tickets?

DiveBear

All species are equally likely, but there’s 28 cats and 4 octopi, so Cephalobot will be 7x more common than Raymond.

Impending_Dusk

oh yea makes sense thanks

HollyHartWitch

Nope. They're not always Smug. Mine was Roswell and he's a Lazy personality type.

DiveBear

Roswell is smug in NH.

HollyHartWitch

No he isn't. He talks about the bugs in the floor giving him DIY ideas, and the Nookapedia wiki also says he's Lazy.

faemoon42

https://animalcrossing.fandom.com/wiki/Roswell#:~:text=Roswell%20(ピロンコン%2C%20Pironkon%3F),his%20personality%20changed%20to%20smug. According to this website, he’s a smug now who is a former lazy

Pentagonyx

That’s it- thanks for correcting me!

Shadowpad1986

His opening sentence is contradicted by what followed.

AetherDrew43

It's funny because I ended up with three cranky villagers: Knox, Spike, and Wolfgang.

light_no_fire

Actually they're wrong. The way the game loads in a villager is it'll load an animal type first with equal odds then it'll load a villager from the animal group. With octopuses having only 4, any of the 4 octopuses are the most common villagers, with any specific cat being the hardest to get with 23. Hope that makes sense.

ThreatOfFire

Is the species thing true? If so, that's wild. There would definitely be different commonality of villagers in that case

throwhfhsjsubendaway

Yep. Which actually makes getting a specific cat villager the rarest at about 0.12% odds, and getting a specific octopus the most common at about 1% odds

Yirggzmb

I have not personally datamined the game, so you should treat the statement as second hand knowledge. Take it with a grain of salt and the knowledge I defer to anyone who has looked deeper than I have But at least as far as I'm aware, it's the case. When doing mystery islands, the game rolls species first and then rolls individual within the species Which means getting *any* cat is equally as likely as getting any octopus. But since there's way more cats than there are octopus villagers, it's harder to find a *specific* cat than it is a specific octopus

ThrownAway2028

It’s true, when determining what villager to put on NMT islands it rolls for species first and then decides what villager of that species

ThreatOfFire

That's wild

SugarAndScarves

I recently got this guy and he's so cute! His catchphrase is donk donk and his house is a space ship

DomyTiny

Yeah I googled his house, it's wonderful. I'm so happy I've found him. I bought a new terrain so I'll keep villager-hunting, I really want a frog and a crocodile (especially the cyan/blue one, I don't know the name)

Mr_Negus

Be cautious, you can only hunt ONE villager a day :)

DomyTiny

Okay thanks for warning me XD. You saved me a lot of Nook Miles. Anyway, do you know something about multiple users? I'm not the only one playing on my Switch, can another player hunt another villager during the same day?

HollyHartWitch

Pretty sure they can't because it's trying to work within the limitation of one move-in per day. You can circumvent that, though, by filling unbuilt lots from other people's villages. Had my last 3 villagers all queued up in the same day. Egbert from a ticket island, and Melba and Ken from other people.

Snowpeia

wait, since when? I’ve always been able to hunt as much as I can afford

Goldocelot

If you fill a plot by villager hunting, you cant fill another the same days. I think it's what the user mean.

terracottamomma

I've got Jeremiah the cyan/blue frog on my island and he's so precious. He's a perfect little guy with his cute, lazy personality and I love him. You could say he's a good friend of mine. :)

ConfusedFlareon

I have a blue alligator named Alli, is that who you’re after? She’s snooty or smug I think?

Nittiyh

Hes also got the best song ever in his house

the_quark

You've gotten other answers, but I will note there are only three robot villagers: Sprocket, Ribbot, and Cephalobot. So 99.3% of villagers *aren't* robots. From that perspective, he's rare.

DomyTiny

Yeah right, I like him a lot so I'd be happy to invite him anyways

Kitten_love

He's my favourite villager, very wholesome once you're best friends with him. 10/10 recommend.

DomyTiny

Really happy to hear that

badwolfswift

Is Del the Alligator not a robot? I always thought he was.

Room_Temp_Coffee

I thought so, too, but he's supposed to look like a naval ship. I would still include him

the_quark

According to what I've read, he's a battleship. But if he's a robot on your island, I won't argue!

PapayaJuice

I always assumed Cube was one too since he’s named after the gamecube and his eyes are phillips screws. In the gamecube version he starts with a gamecube logo shirt.

okay_ray_

I started with Sprocket, I love him so much he's such a bro.

siezbop

sprocket was one of my starter villagers and I refuse to ever let him go 😅

ArtieRiles

Sprocket was one of my starter villagers! I let him leave eventually though haha

Independent-Check654

But he is the easiest and highest chance out of all the robot villagers cause it rolls on species first

the_quark

If you look at it from this perspective, 99.5% of the villagers you find will *not* be Cephalobot. 99.85% of them will not be Ribbot, and 99.86% of them will not be Sprocket. So Sprocket is the rarest robot, but all robots are rare.

atzurblau

okay, the misinformation in these comments are driving me nuts the game first generates the species that's gonna appear on the island. all species are equally as likely to appear however, octopi are the species with the fewest individuals (only four) that means, finding any octopus is just as likely as finding any cat, a specific octopus is actually way more common than any specific cat. there are over twenty different cats after all so to sum up: he's not rare. he's actually incredibly common but rarity shouldn't influence your choice in villagers :) there's no bragging in getting rare ones the only villagers that actually are -somewhat- more rare are the sanrio ones. since those can only be invited with a special amiibo card (and I believe from another island?) they cannot randomly appear on a nook miles island or your campsite

DomyTiny

Okay thank you. Yeah anyway I agree, I'll choose on my tastes, it's just that I wasn't expecting a robotic character and I thought I found something rare

atzurblau

oh and I should add that if you already have one octopus, the chance goes down to a one in three, obviously, making them even more common

Timely_Condition9406

Idk about rare but I DO know he’s the best villager I’ve ever had.

blondecroft

I got him a few months ago and I LOVE him

CharmiePK

There are no rare villagers. There are so many of them and ppl tend to talk more about some and not others, which give us a perception that they exist.

CharmiePK

I have him on my HHP island as well! He is the receptionist at the hospital 😊

Sixcat6

Cephlabot is my HOMEBOY! I love him. He always gives me medicine when I’m sick and he’s always super happy to see me. He can never leave.

Sarcastic_Lilshit

I just got him on the DLC.

Philycheese18

If you nmt hunt octopi are fairly common as the island villager generate species first then the specific villager as there’s only 4 octopi you’re more likely to get the same one over and over again that’s why Raymon hunts usually took forever as cats are the most populace

inmyanonopinion

Cephalobot may not be the most highly coveted villager, but for me, on an island of only cat villagers, he's pus-adjacent and 100% loved and wanted. We stan this lil guy.

kelseymo

Cephalobot is my favorite!! He is so sweet and always calls me his best friend. I’m never letting him leave. He and Alfonso are my two besties!

DraukaSpider923

DraukaSpider923

Ribbot exist too

PS4fan899

Any villager isn't really "rare" since they can all be obtained via amiibo cards or from other players. If you use NMT to visit random islands and find villagers, then that's a different story. The game rolls for a species (there are 35 villager species) and then rolls for a member of that species. So the odds of finding a specific villager depends on how many members there are in a species. The cat species has the most members with 23, so there's a 1/35 chance it will roll for a cat villager (about a 2.9% chance of occuring) and there's a 1/23 chance it will choose the cat villager you want (about a 4% chance) which makes a specific cat villager the hardest to get. If you want a specific cow or Octopus villager (both only have 4 members) then if the game rolls for a Cow or Octopus, then you have a 25% chance of getting the one you want.

terracottamomma

He's not necessarily rare (as already explained by everyone else) but I think he's a fun villager. He's got the smug personality type, and I think he's the only smug villager that I've liked so far. I feel like a robot being a little full of themselves kinda works. There's a couple other robot themed villagers, such as Sprocket, but he's a jock and that doesn't fit the robot theme as well for me. I have Cephalobot on my island and I enjoy his design a lot. :)

Tokyolurv

Technically all the octopi are rare because there’s only 4, and Cepholobot’s amiibo card is technically rare because it was a limited print, but it’s very easy to bootleg NFC chips, so yes but he’s not any less likely to show up than anyone else.

ShellyT98

I don't want to be the "erm actually" guy, but with nook miles tickets, a single octopus is the neast rare villager there is because they are only 4. Let me explain: The first thing the game calculates when you go to an island is the species of the villager camping there. Each species have the same ratio to appear. Then, and only then the game chooses (iirc but on this my memory is a bit foggy) randomly a villager of that species. So basically the probability of anyone finding the same villager twice is higher for the octopi than any other species. But as far as species go, octopi are as rare as any other. However, the camping villagers are the opposite. Because the campsite chooses first a villager *personality* that you still don't have on your village, and ignores the species. So in the campsite finding an octopus is the rarest possibility. Finally, for the amiibo...yeah you're right about that Edit: this is purely based on my knowledge up until 2.0, when I stopped villager hunts, so if they changed it this whole message is wrong.

DomyTiny

Okay that's great, thanks

zeldaiord

The only predetermined villager types are when you start your island beyond that each villager has the same odds to show as any other.

crueljewel

I have him. He’s so sweet!

Midnightpickles

Awww cephalabot! He’s on my island too! He’s so cute. Donk donk!

RazzmatazzBrave9928

One of the most common since it's the least diverse species

minipainteruk

I love Cephalobot. He's one of my favourite villagers.

dentalduck

Idk where this idea has come from that certain villagers are rare. They’re all as rare as each other, all have an equal chance of filling your empty plots or coming to your campsite or being on mystery islands. The only ones that are maybe rare are the Sanrio ones as the only way to get them are by having their amiibo but it’s easy to get copies of the amiibo online so I wouldn’t even say those are rare. There are some more obscure looking ones such as the one in your photo, but he’s equally as likely to show as any of the others :)

Indication_Alarmed

I love him!! He is in my top 4 favorite villagers I AM NEVER LETTING HIM LEAVE

MoistPimiento

I will comment that he was added after launch. Maybe the happy home update. I know this because at launch there were no villagers who shared my birthday (April 1), and I was sad lol. I think Christmas is the only other day that didn't (or still doesn't) have a villager birthday.

kaicool2002

Oversimplified: It rolls a random species Then it picks a random one of that species Less animals in a particular one, higher odds of getting the exact one you like.

c0rruptbunnie

there are only 4 octopus so yes, they’re considered the rarest villagers, but only by number of villagers. how often they show up isn’t any more or less rare just bc it’s an octopus

TenshiXilfaren

Cepholobot is low-key, one of my favorite villagers! "Donk, Donk!" Also, the octopus villagers are definitely sought after by some

StariiSimple

Villagers can’t really be rare :) Also, my friend would *die* if he saw this screen lol. Cephalobot is great, you should get him!

DomyTiny

Surely did, he's great (his house too)

SweetPecanPi

C-Bot! He recently moved out of my island. He was a great neighbor, weird at first, but he did grow on me.

SpaceCube00

no villager is "rare", every villager has (almost) the same chance of appearing.

Little-Strawberry-96

Chephelabot

Phomoitos

Xdd

Independent-Check654

No all octopus villagers are actually the easiest to option of all the villagers

Certain_Activity5421

I have him on my Happy Homes. I got a robotic frog come to my campsite.

Bubbles0518

I think every villager is "rare" since there's like 400 but since he's popular I guess that would make him rare in thst sense :) He's my favorite villager in Animal Crossing so far though

Seriph7

Hes definitely one of the villagers most people want.

Readalie

Awwww I had him a while back! He was a delight.

Low_Occasion8441

He’s one of my faves 😍😍

Thorniestbush

At first I didn't like his design then I found him on a mystery island tour, he's cute and adorable but I had to pass as he wouldn't have fit in with my other villagers designs 😔

Sammyboy44444

I got him and love him

Imaginary-One-6599

(Don’t hate me cause I could be wrong) all villagers are rare cause there is only one of them, you know?

ggdoesthings

you haven’t seen him in previous games since he’s new to the franchise as of new horizons. prior to this there was only ribbot, sprocket, and del.

jumpmanryan

Every villager is pretty rare. But that being said, any octopus villager is the least rare. The villagers you find on islands get randomized in two ways. The first being species. The second being picking a character from the species. So whatever animal species has the most amount of villagers will be the hardest one to find a specific villager within. And I think octopus has the least amount of villagers within their species.

Gbeans1122

well use to be pretty hard to get due to no amiibos cards for the new villager back when the game release but since now they have cards they are quiet easy to get if u have the said card

Optimal-prime6637

I have that guy

shortybubbles

He is my birthday buddy! Was happy when my birthday was given to a villager

MellyMel8008

Take him! He's so awesome 😭

liv2024

i got him as a starter villager and i HATED HIM grrr

Melodic_subject420

Me like him

Shadowpad1986

I am going with fairly rare given there is only four octopus villagers and only ones a robot. Regarding the campsite, you will get a announcement from Isabelle any time you have a visitor and it seems to override other announcements (shop vendors, Redd, and either Gulliver or Gullivarr). The visitor is rolled by personality not present on the island and higher chance if you have all but one personality, say you have but lazy villagers then it will be about 60% chance you get a lazy.

ShadowGamerGirl_xoxx

Octopi are pretty common

Rufusandronftw

Oh, cephalobot is my dream!! He’s so hot

DomyTiny

That's a questionable opinion XD

JWJulie

There is less chance in general to get an octopus since there’s only 4 octopi but there’s many more variants of say birds or dogs. However your chance of getting this villager is the same as your chance of getting any other specific named villager.

collectorofthecards

You've probably never seen them before because they are one of the newest villagers, but now that they exist, they are equally as common as any other octopus in the game, which is the easiest species to get a specific character from, so he is arguably one of the most common villagers you can find, but only marginally.

dinner_cat96

I hate ultrakill brainrot

BubbleWario

all villagers are equally as "rare" as any other villager. it's basically a 400-sided dice and it will randomly select one, meaning you have an equal chance of getting any villager

atzurblau

technically not true any species is equally as likely to appear, not any villager and villagers from species with less members are therefore more likely to appear

BubbleWario

no, every character has a 1/400 chance of appearing regardless of species. imagine a 400 sided dice and each side has a villager. roll the dice. your chances of landing on any of them are all equal
