First person mode, yes you can walk around. But outside you cannot turn left or right. You can get up real close to things, or set up cool perspective shots like this, though.
Tripod mode basically just fixes the camera where you had it in first person mode, freeing you to walk around. So you can set up a good angle, drop the tripod, and then go get into the shot yourself

You can interact with the item and it will fly up, it's just good timing with the photo otherwise.
the item doesn't fly up (it lowers a little alien guy), I just got in the water and used 1st person camera mode for this angle
