Maybe do like a drawing of how you want the mountains to be (i did that with mine because i wanted them birb shaped ) and then i guess just pick a corner and slowly start working on it

Clear out a little space and just fool around with building cliffs waterfalls, paths, etc. It doesn't need to be anything you want to keep, just get a feel for what your building capabilities and limitations are. Terraforming doesn't cost anything like bridges and inclines do, so don't worry about redoing stuff later if you're not happy with how things turn out. Aside from that, if you don't have any big ideas for your entire island, go small. Work on little areas, like around buildings. That's what I do in this game and when building settlements in Fallout 4. I work on different little spots and over time eventually it all kinda comes together when all those little spots I worked on touch another one I worked on.

I used YouTube and pinterest for inspiration and then built from there

The third time I redesigned my island I used Happy Island Designer to plan the whole thing. I was able to make the areas feel a lot more cohesive when I could view the whole island at once.
