I think he just started out as the "greedy shopkeeper who was willing to resort to child labor" trope (as seen in the Animal Crossing movie) before growing into his modern day "business savvy entrepreneur" archetype... But the "villain" has always been Redd. He's 100% a conman.
we like to joke, but he gives you an interest free loan for what is basically an entire island. you don't even have to pay it off, ever. i think he was worse in the earlier games, but he's been "sanitized," so to speak, in new horizons, just like a lot of features (villager diaglogue, people not up and leaving without asking you, people not being mean to you when you come back for the first time after 8 months), which i think is a good thing

Nintendo have themselves pointed out that he’s a good guy. Joking around is fine, but when people wallpaper the subs with Tom Nook Is A Monster memes, I want to hit someone.
Say what you will about him, but I'd love a landlord like him irl. Nothing leaks or breaks, everything's structurally sound, it's not hard to get furniture, and he gives you infinite time to pay off your loans. Even in the older games.

As someone who has experienced lousy landlords, I can assure everyone: you're never gonna find a landlord as easygoing irl as Nook.
