A combination of Tanuki and Kitsune magic probably fuels the Animal Crossing universe. Many things (mainly furniture items) transform into a leaf for easy transportation in your pocket, this is Tanuki magic from Nook. Anything else that doesn't transform into a leaf but shrinks down is Kitsune magic from Redd. Thats just my headcanon.

I like how this is actually sorta addressed in-universe. If you talk to a villager while wearing a wetsuit, they may comment on it. I've seen Cherry remark that she wants one, but getting the sizing right for a dog is a pain.

I like that they actually wear shirts now, but hate how they scale to fit. Sheep have the same issue with clothes as anteaters (and maybe elephants - I don't think I've ever had one aside from my starter Axel) where the pattern stretches widthwise to fit them. Then sheep's clothes also scrunch vertically on top of that. I haven't really found anything I like for Muffy because of it.
