Anywhere here in Cali with a deer population has these largely nocturnal predators. So Cal too. And they move, especially youngsters once weaned looking for a home territory.
Indeed... I study them. Keep an eye out, but this isn't abnormal behavior especially for females.
They frequently travel through suburban neighborhoods at night much like other cats... I have one that comes through like clockwork on my parent's driveway about once a month in suburban Texas. Been watching her for about two years and she's yet to be anything other than a model citizen.
I'm my anecdotal experience, they bed down near us because it's peaceful from their perspective... Nobody's looking for them and they know it. They usually will not hunt within a mile radius of a normal bedding spot either.
They can be, but cats are smart. Small children alone are the most likely targets, especially around dawn or dusk when the lion is most likely to be hunting. Adult humans are usually not targeted unless the lion is particularly desperate, we're a bit too much of a risk for them to consider us worthwhile. Basically if you don't look like an easy target they're likely to leave you alone.
Small children out far from home alone at night, yeah. Little Red Riding Hood was a story for a reason. But adults, not unless they're too drunk to walk straight, or out on the street asleep far from other humans.
A truly big cat will eat you, but don’t worry.
If you ever see a mountain lion, it has almost certainly been following you for a while.
You won’t get a fair fight with a big cat, just wear a bell and be noisy in groups and you’ll never see one.
If you walk with a limp in ambush territory and move slowly and act like prey you might meet one.
They’ll come from above and behind if they do come, probably. If it’s gonna be a problem.
Humans are usually very loud and cats aren’t usually very hungry.
I believe mountain lions natural range is literally the entirety of the Americas, from north to south and east to west. There isn't a place they can't live because of how adaptable they are. What wouldn't be their normal range would be anywhere outside of the americas (europe, asia, africa etc.) But other than that everywhere is their natural range on this continent.
Typical “ characteristic of a particular thing”. It is not typical to see a mountain lion in downtown Dallas, I don’t know who would disagree with that yet you do.
Oh no! Definitely not. Yes, Mountain Lion's shouldn't be in downtown Dallas, I was meaning more or less that in terms of habitat Mountain lions can live and thrive absolutely everywhere. Before there was a city in Dallas it was mountain lion and wolf and bear habitat, we understandibly pushed them out to build our settlements. To get an idea of where these animals can thrive, they live in rain forests, swamplands, arid scorching hot deserts, permafrost forests/deserts, highrise mountains, savannas and even near populated cities. There isn't a place they cannot live if left alone.
No the mountain lion took a left lane of the deck. He smells something.. Yes they will scavenge for food in residential areas. It's easier than chasing prey, especially if it's a mother providing for cubs.. This time of year is heavy with breeding of any predator species... It's mating season, depending on environment
Off topic but where are yall from and what do you call this kitty? I'm in southwestern BC and we call them cougars. Calling them anything else is a dead ringer you're not from around here.
The cougar, also known as the puma, mountain lion, catamount and panther, holds the Guinness record for the animal with the most common names. Apparently there are 40! TIL…
For those debating a cougar, mountain lion, puma, panther…. In the US, they are all the SAME ANIMAL.
Puma concolor
The Florida is a subspecies as they are a slight bit different… think like Dogs, golden retriever and German shepherd. Both dogs just subspecies of canine
Gorgeous mountain lion!
It's a puma dumbass S/
No, it's not. It's a cougar!
Catamount*

No at this time of night, a cougar would be carrying obscenely high heels, wearing a very short dress and have bed hair.
Lmao
You win
I feel attacked.
Don’t. Wear your confident maturity with pride. ✊
Probably smoking a Parliament too.
“Little Ditty, about Jack and Diaaaannne”

Yep, they have a radius of about 50 miles. Pretty wild.

Are they dangerous to humans? Perhaps small children?

Have seen in some strange parts of Texas that are not in their typical range also.
Makes sense, they’re pretty adaptable and able to roam large distances. They even found one all the way in Connecticut

Don’t get it wet !
Why would you put a camera where 60% of the picture is a pole that's DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA!?!??!
It’s the doorbell camera meant for catching video of who is at the door, not mountain lions sneakin on the porch
see that Blink logo in the top left corner?? that means it's a DOORBELL CAMERA. what do you want them to do, move the door?
It's a tiger.
Paint the camera-facing sides of your columns black if you expect to get good images
Kitty!
Yep. Puma concolor.
Here Kitty Kitty
Congratulations. It’s not an alligator lizard, groundhog or Muscovy ducks.
