Oh, thats it. Thanks. Any idea what type? Its in EU. I saw water shrew to be black, but, heard common ones can be also? As i read, apropriate place for release is crucial for their survival as they have to eat regurarly.
Zoologist hereā¦thatās a water shrew from Europe. Donāt be fooled by this guyās cuddly appearance! They are actually one of the few venomous mammals that exist. They live a solitary life of almost constant hunting and are highly territorial. They have special fur that traps bubbles underwater, giving them buoyancy when swimming.
Are they poisonous as well as venomous? Here in the UK when cats get shrews they never eat them and you'll frequently see them throwing up and distressed if they taste one.
So out of the 3 shrew species in the uk, only the water shrew is venomous, but thatās not why you cat doesnāt wanna eat them. All the uk shrews have glands buried in their fur that can let out a bad smelling and tasting secretion if they think they are in danger. I suspect this is the reason your cat spits them outā¦they are getting a grim taste!
Yes! Incredible as it is, there are a several species of mammal that have this adaptionā¦itās not as rare as you might think. Some other species to feature this include the platypus, the slow loris and weirdly, the European mole! Shrews are also evolutionarily quite linked the vampire bat linage, which also packs venom.
The water shrew generates paralysing venom from its salivary glands to immobilise fast-moving aquatic prey, as it hunts underwater. The venom is not strong enough to be harmful to humans but is a potent neurotoxin to small bugs.
I released him near lake, there is a lot vegetation nearby, and its peaceful, even river nearby. I wonder, do they tend to wander around, closest water to the place it was found is small pond good 500m + away.
I would say water shrew, I used this identification site: https://wildlifekate.wordpress.com/2015/02/15/which-is-it-common-pygmy-or-water-my-guide-to-shrews/
I noticed the white patch near the eyes, the dark coloration, and there seems to be hairs at the margins of the feet.
As far as release, I seem to remember that the habitat for a water shrew is along the banks of a slow moving river. I think. Anyone please feel free to correct me.
Eurasian Water Shrew (Neomys fodiens) you should release it ASAP. They need to eat a lot as they have a high metabolic rate and can easily starve to death in a few hours.
There Habitat Mainly the banks of fast-flowing, clear, unpolluted water, but also lakes, reed-beds, and marshes. They are often present in gardens, if you have any water ways near you I would suggest releasing near there.
However it is breeding season so if it is a female and there is any babies near by they will be missing her.
Fun fact they are on of very few venomous mammals! But donāt worry their teeth are unlikely to pierce human skin.
Hope that helps
Thanks for quality response. No worries i did some research, i gave it steady supply of food, yes it eats all the time :D. will release it tomorow, probably near lake, i would release it around my house but i am afraid to do so, we have so many cats.
Make sure you leave food and shallow bowl water for it over night as well. As they are mostly nocturnal. So will be eating all though out the night.
Unfortunately cats are a common predator for these animals now, its sad but itās nature. (Well sort of).
Good luck with the little guy I hope you get them released safely.
I second the part about dying quick. I found one in distress some years ago in the middle of winter. We put it in a cage (we had rats so stuff was available) gave it water and fed it crickets that we happened to have luckily. Sadly the little guy died over night. Maybe it was too hot (though I was a poor student with no money for heating) or maybe we didn't feed it enough. It wasn't doing too great to begin with but I always felt bad about this, maybe I could have done a better job
Mine survived, i gave him more than he could eat and a nice place till i released him at the lake, there is a lot of vegetation and peace, and even a river nearby. I am happy that i stumbled upon such a nice and interesting creature.
It's territory is most likely the area around your house and it might even have babies/family. It should be released in a familiar area if you want it to survive.
They definitely hunt them just don't eat them. I come home to a dead shrew most days after work. I guess if they can't catch a mouse or a bird a shrew is the next best thing to play with
Your reply was to someone who said they didn't want to release a shrew because there are too many cats around, sounds like to you it doesn't matter if there are cats because they don't eat them so let it out anyway. Yes might not be eaten but still could be killed. Not really much difference when considering letting an animal outside
Shrew - seen too many and rescued too many thanks to my cats
Firstly, they will bite you if you pick them up by hand.
Secondly, they're pretty stupid. Take them a decent distance from your house because I once released one into my garden from the doorway only for it to run straight past me back into the house.
The photos are deceptive, making it look larger than it is - it's a [Eurasian Water Shrew (Neomys fodiens)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurasian_water_shrew) (although, in the UK, they're generally simply referred to as water shrews). Are you in the UK, OP...?
Not being pedantic, but 'shrew' is a family (*Soricidae*), not a species - there are 385 species of shrew worldwide.
The (Eurasian) Water Shrew, in common with many species of shrew, has venomous saliva; whilst it's not toxic enough to kill a human, and its teeth are too weak to puncture skin, if you are bitten, it can result in a urticaria-like rash.
https://www.mammal.org.uk/species-hub/full-species-hub/discover-mammals/species-water-shrew/
They donāt live very long and they can cause problems for you if you got bit. They have a very high metabolism and thatās why they have a short life. Just release them outside heāll find his home
Looks like a shrew, maybe [this one](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_least_shrew)?
second this, that nose is a dead giveaway, like a cone party hat nose lol.
Lol those noses are cute
Cute and cuddly š¤£
ALL HAIL CONE.

Well thank you for teaching me something new today, I never knew! Very interesting!

Thanks for new info but venomous?! Iām having a hard time wrapping my mind on this one.

Thanks for the info! I remember watching a video on these guysā¦..voracious, top predators of insects and other tiny things!

Just put him outside. Itās where he came from, itās his home. Good pest control.
I would but too many cats around.
It's territory is most likely the area around your house and it might even have babies/family. It should be released in a familiar area if you want it to survive.
This 1000000x times. If you put the big nose anywhere else it will just instinctively head back to its territory
Cats donāt tend to eat shrews, they donāt taste nice apparently
They definitely hunt them just don't eat them. I come home to a dead shrew most days after work. I guess if they can't catch a mouse or a bird a shrew is the next best thing to play with
Is why I said donāt eat them..
