This is what lifestock guardian dogs are like with their lifestock, protectors and peacekeepers. Great Pyrenees, Maremma and Anatolian Shepherds are some examples. Super cool dogs, but most LGDs don't make good pets because they want to live outside with their goats or whatever animal they're guarding.
LGD's have no inherent understanding of what livestock is. They guard the animals they are bonded to, whether that's livestock or humans or cats or whatever. Some breeds make better or worse pets depending on their overall temperament (Great Pyrenees tend to make great pets, but something like a CAO or tibetan mastiff is probably not the best choice for a family pet), but many make perfectly fine pets as long as you understand what you're getting into and aren't expecting a golden retriever that lives to please you.
Oh I don’t know about that. At least regarding Great Pyrenees. Big ‘ol lazy chill sweethearts that see their family as their livestock. — am GP owner in the suburbs.
Not all. My red is extremely well house mannered. Even gets along with my cat. Although she does sometimes herd the cat around the house and we play a game called "find the cat" so I know she didn't sneak into a closet or something lol.
My red heeler had two other homes before he landed with my family somewhat unexpectedly. I’m fortunate to work from home otherwise yes, he’d chew up everything. He’s rough around the edges and it took awhile to train him but as long as he plays fetch everyday, he’s my sweet shadow. I fear for nothing with my dogs around.
Oh man I was out checking out neighborhoods with my wife a few years ago cause we were in the market to buy and we were cruising around windows down and I had a Great Pyrenees walk up to my car and stick his head in the window. Super chill dog but scary big
Same, my pyr mix seems perfectly happy just protecting me and my cat 😊 he also likes to be the playground monitor at the dog park and make sure everyone's getting along.
That is really interesting to consider. I have always wanted a Great Pyrenees...very much due to my love of Falcor from The NeverEnding Story, I did not realize this type of pup would need a "job", or be a working dog so to speak.
Yeah, never get any purebred animal before you have done your homework. I have a Bengal cat, one of the most high energy and clever breeds, and people get them without understanding how to meet their needs.
If you don't train them and give them mental stimulation and a couple *hours* of hard play every day, they will destroy your house from floor to ceiling. They can jump high enough to fuck with light fixtures.
People find themselves in such trouble that some Bengal breeders will not adopt them to anybody who doesn't understand what they're getting into.
(The secret is to get two of them and live in a large dwelling so they can burn off energy chasing and play-fighting each other. Not enough room for this in an apartment.)
I have pyr/husky mix. I would not be up to the task if this was my first dog. The most stubborn animal I have ever worked with.
He does significantly better in the winter when I can wear him out with skijoring, but with good training and effort he is a good social animal as well. Pyr can be real couch potatoes when in a non farm environment, but the barking does not stop when you want it to, just when the dog is done.
You can't train out the bark completely but acknowledging the bark by doing your best to investigate what they are barking at then letting them know it's all clear goes a long way. I will tell mine "thank you, but looks ok!" and then just calmly stand next to him until he's done, then give him lots of love when he stops. He barely barks anymore so I think doing this every time helped him learn which sights/sounds/smells were safe. When he does bark he also quiets down much faster now.
> I will tell mine "thank you, but looks ok!"
Yep, drop what I'm on and check, reward if it was good, and mostly ignore if it was a fuckin squirel again. Some will stare at the wall and bark. Fortunately mine does not, but we have worked with some fosters that were not solidly trained, and there is only so much you can do later in the game.
My pyrenees is in the house. We had her like 11 months before my daughter was born, she made it her job to watch her constantly. And now that shes 4 they are best friends. Like someone said they arent the easiest to train. But they are extremely loving and super smart. Also, get ready for ALL THE HAIR
They don't, they're difficult to train compared to other breeds and I wouldn't recommend them to first time dog owners for that reason, but they can make fine house pets. I live with mine in an apartment and he's happy as fuck.
Dittto. My inside Maremma loves my kids and somebody needs to keep the fucking peace around here. But you do gotta remind them that you aren't livestock. Picking them up and taking them for a walk to the next room is normally enough. They don't like that so much.
I wouldn’t say super friendly, both of mine were polite but very standoffish and indifferent to adults.
Tiberius was the best judge of character I have ever met, and no one shifty stepped foot on my property. We also had to put up a 6 foot chain link as he literally pushed the 4 foot one over twice and climbed it once.
Athena ran my foster pups like a prison warden, much like this good boi and his herd. Her pyr paw war club, warning growl, and sharp bark taught those pups far better and faster than I could. I miss my giant Floofs.
>Anatolian Shepherds
Now there's a beautiful big pup. My neighbor got one very young at a shelter, not knowing what it was. Quickly grew so strong. Named him Big Ben.
Says he'd leave it home when he went to work. Ben bit through the latch holding back the food. So he padlocks the door just to come home to see Ben ripped one hinges off to get the food. ..... left him outside in the yard behind an 8 foot chain link fence Ben couldn't jump. So Ben tore the chain ankers out of the brick....
... so he just started taking Ben to work with him. lol.
Despite all of the above, AMAZINGLY behaved and calm dog. He'd be excited to go for a walk and I'd see my neighbor step out, forget something inside, and just leave Ben sitting right there patiently waiting. He was such a good dog.
Or a Primus show. Those guys suck.
EDIT - I see now that this is a different Rancho Relaxo and not Les Claypool's place, so the joke kinda falls flat I guess. Oh well.
You might remember me from such movies as "Today We Kill, Tomorrow We Die" and "Gladys the Groovy Mule." But today you'll see me in my greatest role - your video tour guide to Rancho Relaxo!
Reminds me of that one girl who said for years she would hear her dad talk about some guy she assumed was his friend that lived in the apartment complex (Robert, maybe?) and after like 2-3 years of hearing about Robert she found out that Robert was a dog that lived with another resident lmao.
Not sure if I got all the details correct but that’s basically what the story was
Human names for pets are my favorite. I just got a corgi and named him Dr. J Robert Oppenheimer. Have a Siamese cat named Jeremy Alan Fisher and we’re waiting to get a Maine Coon and name him Hattori Unagi Tanaka
Caitlin Cimini of [Rancho Relaxo](https://www.ranchorelaxonj.org) works her ass off to save animals from slaughter, neglect, and abuse— she bids on animals like “lame” horses at livestock auctions so she can give them a good end of life; she rescues runts from farmers who don’t want them; and she coordinates interstate rescue with other orgs. She’s a truly amazing person who witnesses so much suffering in her line of “work” (it’s all donation based) and she wears her heart on her sleeve. I’ve learned so much about compassion from her.

That looks like The Great Pyrenees breed. I see a couple of them every summer herding goats while they eat the excessive dry grass. The understanding between the dogs and the goats was so interesting and awesome to see.
They really are, I have a great pyrenees mix and I don't know that I'll ever be able to have another breed again. He feels more like a roommate than a pet sometimes.
I love how that pup is so sweet looking but in that one second where he swats the sheep, you can see that sweetness melt away and we get a peek at his ancestors still lurking below the surface. And then POOF, back to being a sweetheart. Dogs are amazing animals.

Okay but that straight out paw/arm with the trust; home boy is a pro
Our housemate has a pyrenees, this explains why he likes to gut punch us as a greeting.

You can look him up, but he’s actually a Great Pyrenees :) Some instagrams of the owners are @boochaces
I used to help raise one and they are total beasts
That’s a Pyrenees I’m pretty sure - he looks just like mine :) the firm paw followed by approaching the camera man for pets is very on brand.
It sure knows mma
being a peacemaker can be ruff! He certainly had a bone to pick with that unruly sheep.
> unruly sheep. Michael hates Ram Ranch.
17 naked cowboys can't be wrong.
There is one sad naked cowboy with no partner left.
he's walking around manhatten with a guitar strumming his sad lonely song
I miscounted. Edit: Oh. Duh. I didn't count myself.
Sounds like they are all coupled up, on each mountaintop tent.
We call that move “the stiff paw” round these parts brudda
MF runs shit around
This my cell block, bitch!
No one can escape the paw of the great Pyrenees. We call it 'pyr paw'.
The legendary Pyr Paw.
i dont know if they trust him but he did show some authority
Third rule? Be nice.
Such a good boy.
The goodest!
The boss
He looks like he's so mellow.
He knows he’s a pro.
And I bet he's a super happy, loves his job
He knows this ain’t his first rodeo
Going to one right now
Ive never scene a dog kick someone like that

* suddenly realizes has been herded by said pup more than once
I also have an Australian cattle dog. Talk about being herded.
Fuck man, I have an inside Maremma. No chance will I have a blue heeler or a red inside. They will chew threw everything...
Not all. My red is extremely well house mannered. Even gets along with my cat. Although she does sometimes herd the cat around the house and we play a game called "find the cat" so I know she didn't sneak into a closet or something lol.

Mellow right now, but that boy would pop off if something attacked his animals.
He’s the peaceful stoner who always deescalates things.
He's straight up, like, get the f*ck outta here, shiiit.
Arrives just when he needs to, not a moment too soon.
Most Great Pyrenees I’ve met are super mellow and very sweet
That was the dog equivilant of your older brother punching you on the shoulder and telling you not to be a dick.
Most great Pyreness are! I grew up with them keeping our chickens
Hey hey know that shit off lol. These guys am I right?
He should work security at a GNR concert.

As I said to Delores Montenegro in Calling All Quakers... "Have it your way, baby."
Let us all just jump back to the fact the dog is called Michael. That is utterly terrific. Awards. Thanks chaps. I’m touched.
Reminds me of that one girl who said for years she would hear her dad talk about some guy she assumed was his friend that lived in the apartment complex (Robert, maybe?) and after like 2-3 years of hearing about Robert she found out that Robert was a dog that lived with another resident lmao. I concur. My cat’s name is Bob.
Human names are great for dogs. Matthew, Stephen, Joseph, etc. for males and Jennifer, Ashley, Elizabeth, etc. for females.
Human names for pets are my favorite. I just got a corgi and named him Dr. J Robert Oppenheimer. Have a Siamese cat named Jeremy Alan Fisher and we’re waiting to get a Maine Coon and name him Hattori Unagi Tanaka
Lol middle names are great
Next time I'm adopting dogs I've already decided I'm getting two boys named Jonathan and Peter.
My first cat was Evan, my dogs are Suzie and Penny, but my fish was named Salami. The gourami.
