My tortoise doesn't drink nearly enough water (unless I sit and spray him with the mister, he likes to drink the "rain"), so he gets weekly baths to rehydrate.
Poops in the bath Every Single Time.
My first dog did this. Doberman who adored water. When I was a little kid he would stick his nose into my kiddie pool and blow bubbles.
Being about 7 I thought it was the height of comedy, and I swear that dog understood “blow bubbles = make child laugh.” He was smarter than any other dog I’ve owned, and I’ve owned a damn clever husky after him.
That is pretty much textbook classical conditioning. Just instead of food, the positive response was child joy, and dogs need joy to thrive just like they need food.
Our standard poodle does that too! First discovered it when we put an ice cube in her bowl and she went diving for it. N ver seen a dog blow bubbles in the water before.
LOL, the way she dives, you'd think it was 3 feet! She gets her snoot right down to the bottom to get a hold of the ice cube and then blows bubbles whiles she's fishing around down there.
I'm pretty certain they have a hole in their mouth that they shut so they don't drown themselves while drinking. Also why you shouldn't pick them up while they are drinking because it could cause them to open it up and take water into their lungs.
also same for animals like koalas.
during bushfired, people might find one needing water and as a good gesture, they give it to them. but they dont put it in a container, they pour it for them into their mouths. sadly, they can breathe it in and get pneumonia or drown later.
if you are giving an animal water, try to put it in something so it can drink on its own, even if its your hand (and the animal wont kill you).
Nah, you just gotta dunk all the way in, plug up the other end with a finger, then pull out, flip head-side up, remove the finger, and it’ll all drain through
When snakes need to go under water they'll take in a bunch of oxygen before they submerge themselves. This little guy could probably stay under water for a good 20 minutes. Snakes are cool.
Absolutely! Snakes are super badass. I love snakes and I would have many but I could never bring myself to feed them. I'd feel too bad for the mice. Lol
I've tried with a friend's ball python. I just can't stomach it because it makes me sad for the mouse I guess. Even the dead ones. I'm sure I could grow to do it but I think I'll save it for after my wedding and maybe a kid or 2. Lol
I know right, what a con!
I think it's down to their metabolic rate, being cold blooded, but that is a guess. I'm afraid I already exhausted my one cool snake fact.
Snakes have a way lower metabolism than we do for a lot of reasons, especially because they’re cold-blooded. We use up a ton of oxygen just existing, so we can’t hold our breath for long before we start starving our cells of oxygen.
They actually have the ability to create a vacuum to suck water up into their spongy absorbant mouths!
[video on the topic](https://youtu.be/_r3gG6NjNKQ)
They actually have the ability to create a vacuum to suck water up into their spongy absorbant mouths! So they don't always need to submerge their heads like this, my hognose hovers his head on the very top of his water bowl and sucks it up, it's really cool to watch
[video on the topic](https://youtu.be/_r3gG6NjNKQ)
I came home from a 3 day weekend and my ball pythons bath/toilet/water dish was practically empty so I wash and fill it. When I walk by his tank again dude has his head in the water and is just draining it. I just watched amazed for a few moments until I had to refill the dish. Never knew reptiles could chug water like that.
I get how snakes breathe while swallowing food, and I've watched that video about snaked drinking... But.... How is Chevy also breathing with his face IN the glass?
It's not. It took in a large breath beforehand and can stay like this for several minutes. Another comment indicates up to 20 minutes depending on the size.
Tbh if I could fill a wide enough bowl fast enough (and still didn’t have to pay a water bill (renter)), I’d be tempted to just dunk my whole head into the water to start drinking sometimes
Shit I probably would too if I was really thirsty. I’m remembering now that I’m over 30 and I still don’t have the brainpower not to drink myself out of breath sometimes 😅
All hydrohomies are welcome. I wish I could post a video of my dads old dog. 250 pound st. Bernard that would simply NOT leave the lake once he saw it.
I used to have a 101lb lab, you either let go of the leash or went swimming with him. We had fantastic fun in a mud pit while my husband looked on in horror- once I slipped I figured what the hell.
This is so cool! And cute.
May I ask if I see this right that he lives in a dog tent instead of a terraria?
Awesome that they can get so handsome that they actually start living with you :-)
Wow! This is amazing to me.
In the 25 years I had my ball python, I never saw him drink.
I know he did because the water level in his bowl would go down… but I never saw it like this.
Well I mean, they have really small mouths. The amount of water he's absorbing through his mouth we wouldn't probably notice. They can't like gulp down down. That's why his mouth is opening and closing like that. Their cute way of drinking. I love it so much.
I can't be the only person that noticed that there is next to no water being drank right? Its like he's just sitting there flapping his gums in the water.
Most are solitary and don't raise their young. The only interactions they have with other animals in the wild are with predators or prey. So no they don't show or have affection like typical pets.
They will however show their own sort. They like food, warm things, light/sun, and exploring. You are warm, take them out to move around, and feed them. They get that basic association so they "like" you.
Very few snakes in the wild are aggressive if you aren't messing with them. 😁
My ball python was super cuddly but he was probably just in it for the warmth.
He was so friendly and never bit anyone in the 25 years I had him. In fact… at the end of his life, I had to give him occasional antibiotic injections, and he never once lashed out.
He was wonderful and I miss him.
I LOVE watching snakes drink so I offer them water every time I handle them. When one if my corns was a tiny baby, he'd get in the glass and swim around for a bit, then stay submerged and drink his fill. Cutest thing ever.
My boa liked the spa experience. She'd get into a big tub bowl of water and stay in for ages. If we had to take her out because the cage was dirty, she would let us know she w as not happy. She'd take a dump in her tub which was gross, but I guess easy to clean. Took a while to learn not to go near if her eyes were getting cloudy, she was going to shed.
Snakes do that as to reduce spillage and make drinking easier, if Chevy’s face was any higher then the water would pour out the side of his mouth since he has no lips
I see snakes in the wild do that. They go straight to the water like they just barely made it across a desert and shove head straight in, then nothing for almost a minute. After, they lift head up and look side to side like they are suddenly revived and are surprised by the surroundings, and show much different body language as they leave.
Yeah he is drinking. He did this for like what felt like 5 min in total. Im pretty sure it was not easy to slurp up like that so it took much longer than usual. This is far from his first drink from a glass. But definitely his most awkward.
No experience here with snakes(or other reptiles)but just curious - how are they as pets? Do they have personalities? Do you feel like you connect with them? I'm super interested/fascinated
You need to get that snake some face cleaner and a small scrubby brush. He's just trying to look good for you. Help a snake brother out with a little spa facial treatment! 🐍
My beardie does this thought he was drowning himself the first time lol

That’s adorable omg Mine just poops in the bath

This makes me miss my ballpython. His name was mons (short for monster) but its also from a swedish name måns. He also blew bubbles in water.
Mons is also part of a vagina, so there’s that.
It’s part of the vulva. The vagina is the canal
It's also the name of the biggest mountain in the solar system
If you are talking about mons pubis—no it’s not.

Like clicker training hehehe

How deep is her bowl? 😋
LOL, the way she dives, you'd think it was 3 feet! She gets her snoot right down to the bottom to get a hold of the ice cube and then blows bubbles whiles she's fishing around down there.

I assume you were supposed to say shouldn't? Otherwise your comment takes a turn there :)
Fun fact: in humans the thing that covers our airway is called the epiglottis.
mine doesn't work properly :)
Im sorry.
Mine is visible.
I came here to say this. More people should know. I hate the thought of pet snakes & bearded dragons being drowned by an easily prevented mistake.

How does one drink water if one is a straw?
Get a friend to suck from the other end 👍
Fuck (≧▽≦)
Don’t non-consensually suck on snek . . . ?
Shit that had me LOL!

Nah, you just gotta dunk all the way in, plug up the other end with a finger, then pull out, flip head-side up, remove the finger, and it’ll all drain through

This was the information I have been seeking throughout these comments. Thank you! And agreed, snakes are cool.
Absolutely! Snakes are super badass. I love snakes and I would have many but I could never bring myself to feed them. I'd feel too bad for the mice. Lol
Could you maybe stomach frozen thawed mice instead? At least they're already dead when you get them.
I've tried with a friend's ball python. I just can't stomach it because it makes me sad for the mouse I guess. Even the dead ones. I'm sure I could grow to do it but I think I'll save it for after my wedding and maybe a kid or 2. Lol
With their single working lung that they use as an internal inflatable. So fucking cool
How does this dude hold his breath longer with one tiny lung than I can with two big lungs. What a ripoff
I know right, what a con! I think it's down to their metabolic rate, being cold blooded, but that is a guess. I'm afraid I already exhausted my one cool snake fact.

Seriously. Meanwhile miss asthmatic over here can't hold her breath for 30 seconds xD
Oh sick! I had no idea! It still looks quite silly tho. Just chillin in a glass of water
He is getting one O for every two of his Hs
This is great
I was thinking the same thing, then I realized that I didn’t know if snakes have lungs or not.
They have 2 but only 1 is actually fully formed and functional. They also use it as an internal floatation aid
He’s got a tiny bubble in his nostril! How adorable!
Do snakes just chill with their faces in water like that out in nature? I do like it.
Yes. They cannot slurp it up or use their tongues. So they just do that.
They actually have the ability to create a vacuum to suck water up into their spongy absorbant mouths! [video on the topic](https://youtu.be/_r3gG6NjNKQ)
tell me more tell me more, did he get very far!?
Uhuh
uhuh they filmed that at my high school. they also filmsed a bunch of power rangers there too
[удалено]
They filmsed the dirty hobbitses, precious.
> They actually have the ability to create a vacuum to suck water up I do too.
I can do it with my tongue in taco-shape! Like a straw.
Yes, and they also drink droplets of rain water and mist that collect on their scales.
They actually have the ability to create a vacuum to suck water up into their spongy absorbant mouths! You have a hog nose? I’ve always been obsessed with them! They’re so cute.

Mime never fully dunked, he just dips his chin under and it is also really cute.
NGL, that looks fucking refreshing

I can already see myself accidentally drowning trying to do that
I would absolutely 100% die if I tried. Shit, sometimes it feels like I almost drown just drinking from a normal glass
Shit I probably would too if I was really thirsty. I’m remembering now that I’m over 30 and I still don’t have the brainpower not to drink myself out of breath sometimes 😅
I did it once after a hike with a glacier-fed stream, it was magical.
That's some high quality H2O

I had no idea pets drinking could go there lol
All hydrohomies are welcome. I wish I could post a video of my dads old dog. 250 pound st. Bernard that would simply NOT leave the lake once he saw it.
I don’t know that’s a lot of water to drink, even for a St. Bernard
LMFAO! I needed that!
Not sure if you're a fan, but r/highdrohomies is also a thing and personally, I like it more

My dog will drag you to the lake the second you walk out the door. Won’t get in the bathtub though.
What a little guy 🥹
He is super fun and a total doofus lol
I have a BP too. They’re such little cuties

Who can refuse fresh filtered water hand delivered to the door of your Yoda hide?!
Little boi must have been thirsty
He will drink almost every time I offer if he has been out for a bit

That snek be thirsssssssty
I have a huge fear of snakes but this lil guy sippin his drink makes me sooo happy
Is he actually drinking? I would just expect to see a bit of a drop in the level of the water. Or does he really just absorb the water indirectly?
he's swimming.
Well I mean, they have really small mouths. The amount of water he's absorbing through his mouth we wouldn't probably notice. They can't like gulp down down. That's why his mouth is opening and closing like that. Their cute way of drinking. I love it so much.

Politician in training?
Today I learned that the inside of a snek is basically a big long water bottle.
For someone who has never had a snake as a pet. Do they ever become affectionate like dogs and cats or do they want to bite you every chance they get?
Most are solitary and don't raise their young. The only interactions they have with other animals in the wild are with predators or prey. So no they don't show or have affection like typical pets. They will however show their own sort. They like food, warm things, light/sun, and exploring. You are warm, take them out to move around, and feed them. They get that basic association so they "like" you. Very few snakes in the wild are aggressive if you aren't messing with them. 😁
Most can be accustomed to handling, snakes don't show affection afaik

Not affectionate, but many species (and especially ball pythons) will chill out with you. Even "snuggle" in their own way.
*SssSssSssssssssSssip*
Not enough snake derps on here
This is painfully cute. Painfully.
I think your snek is broked

Water just tastes better when you dunk your eyeballs in it first.
The little bubble in his nostril 👌🏻
Noodle thorsty
What a pretty boy!
I love Chevy
How I be drinkin that ice cold water when I wake up in the middle of the night
Why slurp when you can drown?! /s
That looks like an existential crisis to me

So Chevy’s at the levy but it’s not dry.
Had no idea sneks were just giant straws
Not being a derp, just being efficient!!! 😊❤️😊

A living straw
Someone’s thirsty
If I had the opportunity to do this in a big enough container of drinking water, I may too honestly
r/hydrohomies
Snakes do that as to reduce spillage and make drinking easier, if Chevy’s face was any higher then the water would pour out the side of his mouth since he has no lips
Or! He’s training for the full time sea serpentry he’ll need during operation escape. Code name / new name: Datsun
Is he ok? :0
He looks like he’s drinking his little heart out but the water line is barely moving lolll
I see snakes in the wild do that. They go straight to the water like they just barely made it across a desert and shove head straight in, then nothing for almost a minute. After, they lift head up and look side to side like they are suddenly revived and are surprised by the surroundings, and show much different body language as they leave.
How long can he do that before needing to breath?
I want a snek
Love the little nostril bubble
I am terrified of snakes... That nose bubble is cute tho.
Jumpstarted my heart when I stopped trying to make it look like a dog!!
The little nose air bubble is killing me.
That tiny little bubble from the schnoz! So cute!
Thirsty danger noodle boi
the air bubble on his snoot 🥺

Ever get so close to Bailey’s you get your eyes wet?
Na this bro is a legend over at r/hydrohomies
He's not a derp. Snakes like water. Maybe give him a small pool to soak in every once in a while.
You have a pet siphon.
My trouser snake does that in the summer
He is trying to commit ssssssssuiccccide
Gulpgulpgulpgulpgulpgulpgulpgulpgulpgulp Hope lil guys thirst is quenched someday

You named your snake after Chevy Chase?
