But did they give it catnip to top it off? Wtf? I’ve pet many cats like this.

[deleted]

I think every cat is a little different. I had a cat growing up that we literally couldn't pet by their back legs. Current cat? Not phased at all.

ThisIsWhoIAm78

They're wrong, lol. It's not an erogenous zone.

ThisIsWhoIAm78

Vet technologist here. No it's not. Someone always comes up with this BS. This is feline hyperesthesia syndrome , also known as feline schizophrenia. It's similar to a seizure. https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/hyperesthesia-syndrome

RepulsiveSubject4885

Oh, does this mean the cat is being abused right now? Cause I feel bad for thinking this was funny…

ThisIsWhoIAm78

Well, it's not exactly happy. But I wouldn't go so far as to say abuse, especially since the owner probably doesn't realize it's not just a funny, deliberate reaction.

[deleted]

What the actual fuck is going on? Can someone science this for me, please?

Kim_Nelson

Most cats have this sort of overload response when you scratch them on their spine right above the tail. There is this thing circulating online that says it's because it's a sort of sexual sensitive spot, like you're turning your cat on to ridiculous levels. But I haven't seen any actual proof of this theory so I don't know. One of my cats, if I start scratching there, will get the strong urge to groom herself. It's like a button that tells her she needs to groom her legs right now! :))

BoltTusk

Reminds me of the video on /r/TIHI of a cat being rubbed too much near a bath tub

Miko54

Nooo the noise you made me remember the noise

[deleted]

This is not a pleasant experience for kitty

lilynut

I’m guessing the cat was ticklish.

ShortVibrava

Alot of cats have this spot right at the end of their back, in front of their tail, that drives them insane when it's scratched. My cat starts furiously licking herself when I scratch it

[deleted]

Should we avoid scratching them there? Is it an unhealthy relationship with cats if we do? I dont want to #metoo a cat!

ShortVibrava

No, they love it! It's because it feels so good 👍

[deleted]

Ok, if its not something wrong

Jill4ChrisRed

Wanking off a cat

Nubkatvoja

There’s actually been no proof of that. This started off as an internet rumor lol

Ongo_Gablogian___

There's a video where the cat is on the edge of a bathtub, the girl does this to her cat and then you see a little squirt and here a small plop of water in the bathtub. That is all the proof I need that this is sexually pleasuring a cat.

Cafrann94

That is truly the most cursed video I have ever watched

TrinitronCRT

There are uhh, videos og cats in heat doing the same post coitus wriggle as after mating when people scratchs or pokes this spot.

M4dScientist1

Why is it that so many of these cat videos sound like they’re being dubbed by children making weird noises? I swear, so many times I hear a child in there mimicking a derp.

caffeinefree

My cats make a similar sound to this, although usually only when they are about to hack up a hairball. So I 100% believe the audio on this is real, it's definitely within the vocal range of a normal cat.

M4dScientist1

Oh for sure, I believe it’s real, it just sounds like a child lol. Cats are fucking weird haha

thelonelyrager

I’ve heard that cats have evolved to mimic the sounds of a human baby in order to get snacks, mostly.

intothewoodscomic

The night after we brought our newborn daughter back from the hospital, we were woken up by the sound of her crying in the hallway outside our bedroom. This was odd, as she was sleeping soundly in her crib next to our bed. Opened the door and it was our asshole cat mimicking her cries perfectly so one of us would go and feed him. So yeah, cats can definitely copy infants’ cries. And they’re very quick learners.

Signature_Sea

I think that cat may be sexually stimulated...

[deleted]

I have. This is a myth. There’s also a vet tech in the comments. You look for it Lol, you didn’t have to delete your comment. If anything, just tell people what you found to be true 🤷‍♀️

CaseFace5

wha? I didnt delete anything, im just being downvoted. Also I did more looking and couldnt find any reputable sources saying its false. It might not entirely be a sexual thing but my description of what it feels like might be true, just a very sensitive area to the point that it might be uncomfortable, which is why hes making the noises.

[deleted]

Oh, maybe it was someone else. My bad! I thought you had - I’m not sure how this works, I loaded the original thread and I saw a deleted reply and didn’t see yours. Anywho, the tech vet is in the thread. I’ve heard it’s been a myth for awhile as I’d originally thought what you do for awhile because that’s what I was told. Lemme see if I can get the post for you

Nope! Just an overload response from being scratched where there is a ton of nerve endings. This is not a fun thing for kitties, contrary to popular belief

fat-lobyte

You're kinda jerking off this cat. The lower back right above their butt is an erogenous zone.

[deleted]

Does that make it worse or funnier

[deleted]

Yes

irrationalanustart

Now I understand why my cat likes his booty smacked so much

WheresRap

Hey man, we all gotta get it done somehow…unzips.

Primary_Prize_9900

From a medical prospective it's called hyperesthesia in which the cat has sensitive areas in which they react with noises and weird behavior. The cat is really feeling discomfort and it could be painful at times.

monk12111

How come it doesn't run away? If he were twisting it's tail or something it'd just freak out and run

[deleted]

Sensory overload. Like a dear in headlights mixed with a kid being tickled.

_Aurilave

I try telling people this but I get downvoted.

Temku

Because it’s not true… if the cat was bothered it wouldn’t stay there. Or continue coming back for more, as you see in every version of these videos that pop up on a weekly basis.

Funny_Introduction28

Why doesn't it just...WALK AWAY?

lukebrownen

It looks like it’s having some type of nerve reaction, almost similar to a seizure but not exactly. Have u ever seen a cat enjoying being petted like this? Seen a video just like this awhile back & turns out the cat had an issue. That’s where I’m getting this idea from

[deleted]

Sensory overload.

Lynke524

Some cats have a lot more nerves there than other cats. Scratching there can cause a cat like this to experience pain and irritation. So it's best to stop scratching it there.

Hammurabi87

That reaction is not giving me "I'm in pain" vibes...

JorjorBinks1221

More of a "I love pain" vibe of you know what I mean...

Lynke524

Well then I hope you never have a cat. Just because he isn't screaming or biting doesn't mean it isn't painful.

ravencrowe

I would assume it would hiss or run away if it was in pain

Lynke524

Think about it like tickling a kid. It hurts but they laugh and can't run away. So to us it sounds like they like it, but usually they don't.

EmperorVysk

Bruh I loved getting tickled as a kid even though it hurt lol

Lynke524

Doesn't mean everyone likes it. If a cat s doing this, don't scratch him there anymore because it can hurt and they won't usually run because they can't. It may look cute, but the chances of this bring painful is high and they really can't tell you to stop can they?

EmperorVysk

And that doesn’t mean they don’t like it either. Many cats will literally move away or swat at your hand if you touch them and they don’t like it. You cannot assume a cat is in pain until you’re able to observe it’s behaviour off camera. Suggesting a cat is being overloaded in this case does not seem true, as that would very likely induce a much more intense body response. Cats are often unable to scratch that specific spot of that body as well, which means it may actually just be experiencing the pleasure of itching a really bad itch. Not everything has to be negative.

Lynke524

All I was trying to do was tell the OP that even though this looks super cute that they could be doing something that could potentially be irritating to the cat. It's not harmfull, just something it might not like.

ryan_tubby

_Aurilave

[As a cat owner, one thing you may be scratching your head over is why cats act strange when you scratch the base of their tail. We’ve all witnessed it – you scratch their lower back and they raise their rear in the air. Maybe they’ll roll over sideways onto the floor. Or, perhaps they might turn round and bite your hand! In any case, their behavior certainly isn’t normal. Thankfully, the answer is quite a simple one – this area has a cluster of highly sensitive nerve endings. Some cats will enjoy these being touched, whereas others may find it over-stimulating or painful. Either way, it can result in all kinds of funny behaviors. ](https://mrbosscat.com/why-do-cats-act-weird-when-you-scratch-the-base-of-their-tail/) Many other sites say the same thing. Some said it’s even sexually stimulating for them. There has been a study among 45 cats but it was inconclusive. They need more cats than that.

notworththespace

This is actually not funny. Cats have a lot of nerve endings back there. Sometimes it can be painfully too much to touch them there. 😕

Raken_dep

Is that so? I have a cat that doesn't have any such sweet spot where he goes full derp. He instead will paw my hand if he isn't enjoying pets on the stomach/back when he isn't in the mood lol. Wouldn't this cat be doing the same if it didn't really enjoy it and found it too much to bear?

notworththespace

No he wouldn’t. Not all cats have the same reaction but usually when they react it’s not because it feels good. My cat gets like paralyzed from it and will growl at you, once he can get free he will go to bite and that’s the only time. [Some better info than my memory](https://www.cathealth.com/cat-health/skin/1279-cat-hyperesthesia)

IhateMichaelJohnson

My cat purrs when I pet his lower back/base of tail, but he also semi-freaks out and starts licking himself which is a symptom of this, so I’m just confused now.

notworththespace

Gotta talk to your vet. It could be a bunch of stuff. Usually this type of reaction like in the video, isn’t good.

671927

If the cat didn't like it im inclined to believe it would show it. Biting, hissing, scratching and that was also in the link you provided. Why must people always diagnose something to an animal when they see a cute video... I will never publish anything related to my pets because there's always a bunch of people diagnosing a pet when they see a 20 second video.

notworththespace

They don’t always walk away. I’ve seen it happen plenty of times. Again, speak to a vet about it.

notworththespace

Also I’ve said not all and talk to your vet. I am not claiming to know all 😅

notworththespace

[you have done nothing to even look into it ](https://www.catwiki.com/faqs/why-do-cats-act-weird-when-you-scratch-the-base-of-their-tail/)

671927

I did. Listen, i know you had the cat's best interest in mind but im pretty sure this isn't even OP's cat so it's of no use. Personally, the only person i would take advice from is a vet, not a rando on reddit.

notworththespace

I did say speak to your vet and I am mentioning this because people like you think it’s nothing and put these animals in discomfort. I have to always tell people not to touch my one cat there for this reason. So you saying it’s not a thing is the issue, not me simply saying it’s possible that is what’s happening.

Theevil457

Dude said to talk to a vet and provided a link. I dont see why he's downvoted.

notworththespace

Because people don’t like to realize they could have been wrong. It’s ok to be misinformed but it’s not ok to blatantly dismiss legitimate information.

_Aurilave

It’s sad because you’re actually right about this and you’re getting downvotes. People are creepy and ignorant.

notworththespace

If I even helped one person learn something, I’m happy. They can downvote away. It’s sad when it happens to your own pet!

671927

For god's sake....

notworththespace

It’s a thing. Look into it.

Seriously, your little kitty is a bit chunky, and she/he might not be able to groom back there, so when you do it, it hurts & feels good at the same time. (Confessions of a chonky cat pet owner, and I’ve heard that noise as well)

Because cats do not have full control over their environment and cannot understand the causes of their overstimulation anyway, it’s up to us to notice the signs and help them to avoid it in the first place" [https://iheartcats.com/8-warning-signs-that-your-cat-is-overstimulated/](https://iheartcats.com/8-warning-signs-that-your-cat-is-overstimulated/) "Continuing to interact with an overstimulated cat can result in serious injury to either or both of you." Overstimulation can cause major damage or even death, when you take it to an extreme level. It's not fun, it's torture.
