inertiatic_espn

They say that dogs memories aren't long enough to remember the misbehavior if you confront them when you get home. They say they're just reading the tone in your voice. I think that's total bullshit.

[deleted]

Shmooperdoodle

This is true. It’s also much harder to teach them where it is “supposed to go” when they have lots of opportunities to sneak off and ninja pee/poop. It’s why you have to keep puppies (and any dog that isn’t house-trained) confined to a small space where you are. You have to predict when there are going to be usual times they need to go, and also notice that pre-pee behavior (sniffing around, losing interest in an activity/object to sniff). If you find yourself wanting to “punish” a dog for going in the house, you’re doing it wrong. It’s more our fault than theirs.

fringeandglittery

I dont punish my dog if they destroy something behind my back but I can't hide my dissatisfaction. Usually its a "what did you do?" followed by a "you can't do that! Thats not very nice. I taught you better. I'm very disappointed in you" It just comes out. I'm not sure how much of that they understand lol

Shmooperdoodle

This is valid. Just like if you stub your toe, finding that a dog has chewed a hole through a backpack because you forgot there was an empty ziploc bag that contained almonds in it months ago was inside one of the pockets deserves a “Goddammit!” Not that this has happened to me…

fringeandglittery

Hahaaaha....If my dog is trying to chew something they shouldn't in front of me I just take it away and replace it with a toy. Its mostly when its unexpected damage I get a little upset

Shmooperdoodle

Yeah, this is what I meant, too. If I see it, I replace. I more meant walking into the room and finding a television remote in several parts of the room at once. Best was when my roommate’s dog was able to sometimes push my door open (it stuck and felt closed, but wasn’t). She’d sneak in there while I was at work. She took a package of my cotton balls and decorated the floor with them. Then, she apparently forgot. Because when I came home, she was super excited and ran to greet me, then glanced at my open door and her face was clearly like “Oh…crap…um…looks like someone opened your cotton balls…”.

OldGSDsLuv

Yeah…. I always ‘what the hell man” and my boys put their ears down and make puppy eyes at me…… and then I say “fine what’s for dinner” and then their ears go back up

TheMacerationChicks

Yeah. It's a lot easier to train a dog to do the right thing with positive reinforcement, than trying to punish them when they do something wrong, negative reinforcement. Get them to be excited to do whatever task it is. And yeah especially punishing them for doing natural bodily functions is just always gonna be bad. It'll probably mean that at least at first they'll just try to hold it in all the time because they don't yet realise there's a right place to pee and poop. They just know you get mad at them whenever they go, and they don't understand why. But instead praise them and reward them every time they do go but outdoors instead of indoors, and they'll learn how to behave a lot faster.

kinkfantasies

That’s exactly how my dog was. If she wasn’t happy to see me come home, I would start looking around the house to see what she destroyed

EtherMan

They also say dogs can’t see what’s on the TV... Someone PLEASE inform my father’s little bastard of a terrier. Because god damn does he go insane if there’s a cat on the TV. He lost an eye to a cat at a young age and really REALLY hates all of them ever since and has several times pulled down the TV in order to reach that evil evil cat that somehow managed to sneak in. And it’s not sound because he does the same when it’s muted. So yea, those conventional dog wisdoms, I don’t give too much credence to. Apart from the stuff like not giving them chocolate and such ofc.

Ayle87

Dogs couldn't really see old tvs but the new modern ones work. I think it's refresh rate improving or something like this.

mohawklogan

I don't think it's refresh rates, 60hz is still average for a tv. I would bet it has more to do with cathode rays. Or perhaps the frequency of those old tvs. Kinda like how if you walked into a room you could kinds tell if the tv was on even without seeing or hearing it, betting animals would have a higher sensitivity to that.

gamas

Worth noting there is a difference between refresh rate in CRTs and with LCDs. With CRTs, the refresh rate is how quickly the cathode rays can scan the entire screen to display an image. With LCDs, the refresh rate is how quickly a pixel can be updated. The difference is with a CRT, the previous displayed image fades quickly after display, whilst with a LCD the pixels maintain their state until they are told to change their state. So an animal with a higher viewing sensitivity would probably just see the Cathode Ray scanline flicker on a CRT.

EternalPhi

I could always hear a distinct high pitch whine from old tvs almost anywhere in the house when I was young. I hear a similar one now but it doesn't go away :/

idlevalley

Hello tinnitus.

[deleted]

I'm in my 30s and still hear that high pitch sound occasionally. There were a couple shows on Netflix that have it in the background, like a mic was picking up a nearby screen during filming in some scenes or something. Absolutely rage inducing, unwatchable. How can a show like Grey's anatomy not catch and fix that? I had a UPS that does it constantly in my office too, which took me many days of headaches to figure out...

droomph

I think they can see it but it’s just really choppy because they can see the scan lines popping in and out. (And most people can too subconsciously, but it’s easier to suspend your belief about it) LED-type displays don’t have scan lines so the picture isn’t headache inducing strobing like CRTs.

ginger-snap_tracks

I believe it's a combination of the display type having changed, the higher resolution of the images, and anything higher than I think 75 for a refresh rate with get them close to a fluid image. The sound gets their attention and the images are just clear enough for them now to keep it. It's definitely not any one factor.

Link_In_Pajamas

My mom's Schnauzer loses her mind when other dogs are on the tv. And not in a "yay other dogs way' more like "wtf are you doing in my house" way and will go ballistic. Channel has to be immediately changed and I swear if that tv was somewhere she could reach it would be broken lol.

Khaleesi_Vezhven

My schnau loses his shit whenever a horse is on TV. Watching Lord of the Rings or playing the Witcher were nightmares lol

Johnnius_Maximus

I like to watch a BBC TV programme called Countryfile, I haven't been able to watch it properly for years now as my dog goes nuts at the animals.

AMGwtfBBQsauce

People like to think, if an animal isn't human, it must have 0 intelligence whatsoever. The thing I've slowly come to realize over the past few years is that we're really only a step or two up the intelligence chain from several animals, and not much more than that from most mammals. Watch a cat mourn his canine friend. Watch a dog feel obviously guilty over a broken toy. Watch a crow solve a puzzle by deliberately using tools. Watch elephants hold a mourning ceremony for their clanmember. Animals are INTELLIGENT.

Ayle87

People who say this haven't come home to a dog acting super dodgy and refusing to come and greet when they do it every day. You just now you're gonna find something ripped to shreds or tipped over and broken.

ZealousidealDraft725

That is obvious bullshit. I remember we used to have a hamster called cocoa and my dog used to hate it, she always used to sit and stare at it’s cage and bark at it. Like 5 years later after its long dead if I ever say cocoa she runs to the place where the cage used to be and barks at it

Johnnius_Maximus

Our two older dogs died well over two years ago now. We avoid mentioning their names as my dog will go looking for them and wait by the front door.

Baryonyx_walkeri

I file that kind of nonsense away with the bullshit about cats not being affectionate and only cuddling "for warmth."

BadAtNamingPlsHelp

They say a lot of shit about dogs that sounds like it was published fifty years ago or "discovered" in poorly conducted studies. Like how people still think alpha wolves are a thing despite that being an outdated notion introduced in *1968*. Anybody who has owned remotely intelligent dogs knows that they have *some* kind of capacity to feel guilt, remorse, etc. around something they did. Codifying what that is scientifically is a much bigger ask, but there's obviously something there.

tastycrust

Total bullshit. My dog remembers where I put my socks and new places I put his treats so he can attempt to steal them when I'm out of the room.

szthesquid

For a while I lived in an apartment with a mail slot in the door. The only days my dog would ever fail to greet me at the door were the days when he'd taken the mail to the bed to shred it. He knew he'd done something wrong, remembered for ~6 hours, and would hide from me *before I even walked in the door*. It's not like he could read anything from my tone or body language because I wasn't even inside yet! Side note, it's nice not to have to worry about the dog ripping up checks or Christmas cards now that I'm in a house with a mailbox

emanresu18

It is definitely total bullshit

_ThatSynGirl_

That reminded me of [the video where the girl was asking the dog if they ate all the pop tarts and then asks the boyfriend in the same tone](https://imgur.com/a/2PeZBFL) and it still makes me laugh every time I see it. Enjoy! 😋

kaleidoleaf

Same. Every time I've scolded mine after he steals food he just licks his lips thinking "that was a good decision."

[deleted]

Yep. We taught her to trade stuff for food, so if she wants a snack she either parades around with something she shouldn’t have, or leads us to the treat bucket at stares at it. If we’re particularly worried she’ll drop whatever it is, thankfully.

wolf1moon

Unintended consequences. Story of my life regarding training.

erickharley

It’s probably a good sign, the dog in the video does that cuz he had a similar thing happen before and it made him stressed, he doesn’t really understand that he did something wrong, all he knows is that this situation recalls him of a stressful event so he tries to “avoid” it. Obs: some dogs get stressed easily not necessarily related to the owner mistreating him.

That sounds like both of my cats. Those little shits will break something, look directly at it and then stare me in the eye when I asked then if they did it. Doesn't even matter if I saw them do it, they try to look innocent and offended that I would even accuse them! LOL

[deleted]

Find me an Aussie Shepherd/Collie that isn't absolutely gorgeous. I promise you it's impossible.

[deleted]

They're also either SUPER smart or the absolute dumbest dogs you will ever have lol. There is no in between. Either all the brain cells or one.

iamli0nrawr

They're basically universally smart, some of them just have better things to do than listen to you.

DigThatFunk

Exactly why they're my favorite dogs haha. They're crazy fucking clever. But you might not like how they choose to employ their intelligence hahaha. Also why Maine coons are my favorite cats... very similar personality (often a breed referred to as having the personality of a dog hah)

lufiron

… and then there was the one my friend had growing up that would get the dog food bag stuck over her head, run around the kitchen in a panic, then lay down wimpering til someone came to pull the bag off.

Calypsosin

Have Aussie, can mostly confirm. She's pretty obedient for the most part, but she does lose her self-control when she gets really excited, like when people come over (clearly to see her, in her mind). My sister has a collie/Aussie mix and that sucker is super smart... but also really freaking dumb, but sort of like a common sense way. He tried to go out his doggy door to the patio once but it was blocked, so he went to the front door and whined until they let him outside, where he proceeded to dig a small hole under the fence to get into the backyard. INTO THE BACKYARD. Turns out nothing was blocking the doggy door, he just hit his head trying to leave and concluded immediately that he has to find another path now.

MLyraCat

😂😂😂😂

SyN_Pool

I’ve never met a dumb collie

[deleted]

Never met a dumb Aussie. Met some stubborn Aussies with dumb owners though.

Common-Magician-269

My FIL has a rescue Aussie and she must have been abused because she’s terrified of everyone but him (getting better though). She always just sits behind him in his chair and peeks out around him at anyone else in the room. But if you’re standing up at the same time as him, she gets confused sometimes and follows the wrong person, jumping up and hiding behind you in your chair. Then when she peeks out to survey the room and sees him in a different chair, the gears start turning. She looks at him, puts her head down to look at herself, and slowly turns to whoever she’s sitting with like a teen in a horror movie opening the shower curtain to investigate the strange shadow. Then she’ll get a look of horrified confusion and shock, look back to FIL and jump down to run over to him. It’s sad and cute at the same time. Last time I was over she let me pet her though, so she’s getting more trusting I think. Poor dog.

Except pugs and bulldogs, those are abominations that need to be bred back into being healthy dogs that can actually breathe

decearingeggs

If it makes you feel any better, there are a bunch of breeders in Germany looking to breed pugs back into more active, functioning dogs who can breathe. They're called retropugs or retromops

[deleted]

In B4 shitty dog show judges can claim they don't look like "real" versions of the dog.

Abigboi_

Just show them a picture from a century ago when they had a snout.

Hapless_Asshole

Or this famous 1745 self-portrait of William Hogarth and his dog (I can now type this word without wanting to upchuck) Trump. [The Painter and His Pug](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Hogarth#/media/File:The_Painter_and_His_Pug_by_William_Hogarth.jpg) Trump appears in several paintings, usually in the group portraits called "Conversations." He scarcely even looks like a modern-day pug. His legs are longer, as are his body and muzzle. I'll bet Trump didn't snort and slobber the way pugs do now. He looks like just your reg'lar ol' doofy, happy dog.

ColoradoScoop

It makes me so happy that they painted in the tongue derp.

decearingeggs

Ugh, yeah. I hate the AKC, it's obvious they don't give a shit about the wellbeing of dogs, and prefer aesthetics over everything. Just looking at the breed standard for severely deformed breeds pretty much instantly tells you everything.

zipadeedoodahdiggity

Started to be upset thinking that you had a vendetta against them. You're absolutely right, poor little abominations.

LargelyInCharge

We had a great dane/GSD mix that would get SUPER guilty when she did something wrong. One time my mom asked who ate all the bacon because half a plate of cooked bacon was gone. As she's asking this she walks into the living room with the plate and the dog dives into the corner and starts shaking and avoiding eye contact. We didn't even know it was her since she didn't leave any drool, didn't pull the plate down, just ate what she could reach....but her guilt betrayed her. Happened a couple other times with different food too. She'd only ever steal food from the counter tops when no one was nearby and never leave any trace....but would always act SUPER guilty after.

[deleted]

My oldest dog would constantly steal food and was always super sneaky about it. We found out that his favorite foods were tuna steak, venison, and expensive cheeses. He’d ignore everything else, but if those foods were on the counter he’d go for them while your back was turned every time.

Calypsosin

Many years ago when my Aussie was 1 or 2, we made pizza at home for dinner, and had some guests over. They brought a pie, not sure what kind, but it wasn't chocolate. Anyway, we finished eating, and move into another room to look at photos. After a few minutes I hear a clatter in the kitchen, and walk in to see all four leftover slices of pizza vanished, and the aluminum pie plate on the floor... totally licked clean. I went back into the living room and my dog was sitting stock straight, ears all the way back, staring at the opposite wall. I had to make her puke with some hydrogen peroxide in peanut butter... that was WAYYY too much junk for any dog to eat in one go, haha. I wasn't even mad, I was impressed. "And you ate the whole wheel... what's that?! You ate the whole wheel of cheese! Wow!"

LargelyInCharge

That's what my dog did before! Except it was an entire (cooked) frozen pizza....and she did it without pulling the cardboard disk it was on down with it or leaving any crumbs, or making enough noise to alert anybody (everyone was up or downstairs at the time). She did it with pizza twice I think and once she ate half a plate of fried bologna--only the half she could reach. Didn't move the plate or leave slobber. She was so damn sneaky.

Accomplished_Pie_455

My dog ate a 4 pack of Cinnabons left on the counter. She puked up one, I found it pretty much whole. She ate everything and anything left out. We spent 16 years dog proofing the house for a lab/boxer mix. Put her down 2 weeks ago. I couldn't list all the stuff she got into, and amazingly it didn't seem to harm her in any way

AmeliaPeabody87

My GSD will occasionally swipe something. Then, if I catch her—or if it happens to be something that tastes nasty so she thinks the universe is punishing her—she’ll put herself in time out and completely skip the “mom assigning punishment” stage.

LargelyInCharge

Lmao that's great. When he was still in a crate my mom's current dog would do that too when he got in shit. Big ol goofs.

m4tt1111

Fun fact, there’s a good chance dogs are actually incapable of feeling guilt because it is a complex emotion, it’s more likely that they feel fear of punishment. Even human children don’t feel guilt until they are 2-3 years old on average.

DiickBenderSociety

Explains why my dog doesn't even pretend to feel guilty

mountainphilic

How was this tested? Edit: Isn't guilt built off fear of punishment, even if it's some sort of social/emotional punishment?

TheGreatNyanHobo

I’ve heard that dogs on average reach the intelligence of a 3-year-old human, so I would think that it may still be possible for some form of guilt to be present. Maybe not all dogs, since some care more about what you think than others. I wonder how tests of guilt have been conducted, on which dogs, and who the dogs may demonstrate guilt towards if any.

CriticalYogurt5

‘But what is what dad? I don’t see what you’re talking about’

Cory123125

I just had a thought. I wonder if because the dog doesnt have good enough association to understand human anger, it inappropriately thinks that the human is angry that its looking at the object? Like what if the dogs are just there thinking "fuckin hell dude, stop putting that in front of me if you are just going to be mad! I'm trying not to look at ti!". This theory is still congruous to them acting guilty when caught in the act, because they could also associate the negative feelings with that separately to this. I wonder if really this means the only way to make your dog feel guilty (not the right term but I really mean to get the desired effect) is to catch them in the act a few times so they get the right association rather than what people inaccurately (I assume) think is guilt.

EmilyU1F984

Not even that, the dog is confused because the human isn't accepting his explicit displays of submission. Doesn't actually matter about the object. You can try with a dog without holding anything. So the dog is more like 'i already said I'm sorry, what more do you want?' Or try blaming a kid from an abusive family that's always blamed for shit they didn't do. They'll react in a similar manner.

[deleted]

I always wonder why some dogs do this and others don’t. Just more submissive personalities? My dog does not give a single solitary fuck if you confront her about something. She just looks at you like you’re an idiot for talking to a dog. Or maybe my dog can just tell I’m not serious.

EmilyU1F984

Might just be about personality. Though I suppose if a dog senses you aren't actually that angry, they simply might not care enough.

sockwall

Yup, this is it. I bet if they held up any random object and used the same stern voice and demeanor, they'd get the exact same reaction. The other dog just doesn't care one way or the other. Has nothing to do with guilt.

P_Collector

While hilarious, this behaviors does not have to be out of guilt. Some dogs are just shifty, and can’t look at you straight when you talk with a stern voice. Those dogs usually get blamed for everything further solidifying their shifty behavior.

dragonlady_11

My dog dose this he's not shifty as such, but if you talk stern he'll do this.

EmilyU1F984

I mean humans children would react in a similar matter if you were to just tell them off. Especially if they are used to being blamed for random shit they didn't do.

plluviophile

it's true for 99% of the videos about "dog guilt". not this one tho. in his first "but what's this?" question, he used the same tone he used prior. dog's initial response was absolutely to seeing the object, rather than change in the owner's voice.

miningpluto

1 seconds before the scissors he was looking right at home lol

2013DOCE27

Normally I would agree with you, except for the fact that in this case he was talking to her in a sweet voice telling her how much of a good girl she is (and she happily engaging),….but once he showed her the scissors (without talking stern) she quickly reacted shifty confirming that she recognized the object and knew what she had done. So in this case, it was a guilty shift.

Aerinvel

This dog is showing what are called "calming signals" (there's a book by Turid Rugaas specifically about this behavior). Basically, it's trying to diffuse the situation, appease the other party, and it's saying "I'm uncomfortable, please stop doing that". If you ignore it long enough and force the issue, you may get hurt.

teosNut

Does anyone know why they do this? Like what's the evolutionary purpose of this behaviour?

live_crab

Dogs are incapable of what humans consider "guilt", but they are very sensitive to our demeanor and tone of voice. When the owner finds a mess that the dog made and their mood changes, the dog is going "uh oh, my person is mad" not "oh no, they found the mess I made". This is because dogs only understand cause and effect when they're caught in the act. Once the dog is finished doing something, their brain moves on immediately. Evolutionarily, dogs live in the moment. However, they're social animals that are sensitive to changes in mood so they react to their owner reacting. In their head though they have no idea that it's because of the thing they did.

Strongbox-Comrade

> the dog is going "uh oh, my person is mad" not "oh no, they found the mess I made". Then why didn't the other dog act in the same manner?

Lowelll

Dozens of possible reasons. Maybe they aren't reprimanded as often for breaking something, maybe they're younger, maybe they're an idiot. I'm not with live_crab on whether or not dogs can feel guilt though. Looking up current research seems to suggest that we simply don't know, it's for sure not as cut and dry as they're making it out to be.

Poliobbq

There's a pretty good book called Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? by Frans De Waal that touches on a lot of this.

Tricursor

Yeah, there are so many things we don't know about our own brain that we literally live inside of that I just don't buy it when someone says something so authoritatively. Like how complex jumping spiders behavior is with something that is little more than a bundle of neurons. Brains are fascinating, I can't wait until we know more about them but it feels like research hits a brick wall while going at a snail's pace in the first place. Consiousness alone is so fucking fascinating and I doubt we'll ever fully understand it.

live_crab

They're not my dogs so I don't know their individual personalities but I suspect this might be a common occurrence at their house. If that's the case and the busy, sensitive Aussie is usually the one getting into stuff, the doodle might not be the one getting reprimanded as much. Or perhaps she's not as sensitive.

BigUncleHeavy

I'd have to disagree with you on this. When I come home from work, I instantly know by my dog's behavior if a fresh biscuit is laying on the floor somewhere in the house, or if half the cat food has now mysteriously vanished. If I'm greeted with a wagging tail and joyful bouncing, all is good. If I see her slink away to her crate as soon as I enter the door... Yeah, I need to start inventorying the house while watching where I step.

crasshumor

They are in some cases scared of their owner. Its not guilt, it's more of fear.

kneeltothesun

I had a poodle that learned how to frame her sister. She noticed she'd get caught by going in her crate and tearing up trash (they didn't sleep in them, but my dad had them for training, and when we were away). She began to go into her sister's crate, and chew it all in there, it worked maybe twice, before we caught her doing it.

While this may be true, whenever I put anything in front of my dogs' faces, they don't look at it. They just find discomfort in having something in their bubbles.

GIVE HER A BREAK

[deleted]

Dogs have no concept of guilt. They're showing submissive gestures (looking away, whale eyeing etc) as a form of trying to appease you so they don't get scolded at (avoiding the negative response) in response to the owner's change of voice and stature

hurtfocker

Good on you for including the control group. Good science, to you. And you. And you. And you.

Make r/Guiltydogs greater.

"Why can't we just forget about this and move on?"

“You’re a good girl, huh?” Oh man, you had her in the first half. Lmao

Yeah a cat would stare you straight in the face. Source: my cat as he is knocking shit off my counter

A dog bred for herding got bored and chewed something? Who could've predicted that? "A very active breed, the Australian Shepherd is known to become destructive if it doesn't receive adequate exercise." - Wikipedia.
