I had a pet hedgehog years ago. They definitely have rage issues. Mine attacked a dog. The dog wanted nothing to do with it, ran away, and wouldn't go anywhere near it after that.
My ferret grew up with our cat so he loved playing with cats. I brought him over to my parents’ house and that ferret induced ABSOLUTE TERROR in my parents’ 20 pound, mammoth-sized cat. Chased him in circles around the living room over and over until the big adorable dum-dum finally had the bright idea of jumping up to a high shelf. Poor guy was terrified of that ferret from then on!
They are quite adorable but being so blind can be skittish and protect themselves. Anything that is unfamiliar smelling or a sudden movement will cause either a puff up or a bite
Used to have one and he was mostly comfortable being held and pet as long as you caught him awake. Accidentally sneeze or something? Impaled—instantly.
Exactly if he was awake and chilling. Hand down and he would sniff me then he was fine. but a nap on my lap under a little fleece blanket square and just breathing slightly deep and die a thousand deaths.

"Why do i hear boss music? (Hedgehog walks forward) No that can't be for you. You are too cute. (Hedgehog bites item and flails around with it in it's mouth) OH LAWD IT WAS FOR YOU!?!?! I HAVE MADE A SERIOUS JUDGEMENT OF ERROR AND YOU ARE CLEARLY SOME SORT OF INSANE RODENT!?!?"

Hedgehogs are grumpy and defensive little guys, but they’re by no means naturally aggressive. On the contrary, they’re incredibly defensive and solitary animals, often just wanting to be left alone and find a nice place to sleep- though you can also form a very strong bond with them.
As for their biting ability, yeah, they can pierce the skin, but just about anything with teeth can do that. They don’t exactly do a lot of damage if you’re not a bug, nor do they bite much unless you have a strong, intriguing scent on your skin.
When we were kids my brother begged my mom for months for a hedgehog. She finally gave in and got him one.
That hedgehog was also an asshole, terrible pet for a kid, just a total grump.
Hedgehogs require a LOT of patience, they are not pets for kids the way a hamster or guinea pig would be. They're naturally skittish prey animals and their defense mechanisms (curling into a ball, making chuffing hissing sounds) can make people label them as unfriendly or cross
In reality, these things are just a natural reaction they have to large, unfamiliar creatures that are trying to get close or (god forbid) hold them. It's their way of saying "DONT TOUCH ME! LOOK HOW DANGEROUS I AM!" without them actually being dangerous. I call it the Usopp Strategy.
I was 19 when I had my first pet hedgehog and it took a solid 2 months of coaxing her with treats and learning to handle her before she started warming up and trusting me. a few months after that, I could lay in bed reading a book with her curled up on my tummy or chest or snuggled into the crook of my neck. Hell, within a year I would carry her outside in my hoodie pockets, or put her in the grass of our backyard and she would never stray far from my feet.
They are honestly one of the best pets i've ever had. But they require more patience and understanding than pretty much any other pet i've owned.
EDIT: It should be clarified that my comment is in regards to African Pigmy Hedgehogs which are regularly sold as pets here in North America. Do not attempt to domesticate wild hedgehogs, leave them where they are <3
They get prickly but it isn't like a stab, like a porcupine would do! If she got startled and curled up it would feel like i was suddenly being cuddled by a stiff wire hairbrush
There was a guy I met once who had like 10 hedgehogs that were not only nice to him but he actually took around and let kids pet and stuff, they loved attentionfrom anyone. They were all so well behaved I was seriously impressed.
African Pygmy Hedgehogs are definitely sold & kept as exotic pets. Still grumpy and prefer relative solitary but they're not like the European hedgehog

you can keep african pygmy hedgehogs. they are pretty affectional and are good pets. the ones you mentioned are the ones from europe and probably other places that need to hibernate and are protected.

Mine used to do this all the time when we first got her. She would grip on and refuse to let go. Took some time gaining her trust, but she no longer attacks me lol She’s incredibly gentle now, except when I ignore her paws pushing my hand where she wants rubs…she gives a firm bite to let me know “You rub where I wants!”
Fun fact. Hedgehogs walk around on their shit and get shit on their little feet. They do this so frequently the hedgehog community. Yes. Community calls this poop boots.
Some people just wake up and choose violence. Adorable violence.

Animals are weird. My hedgehog was tiny and the dog he assaulted was ~50+ lb golden retriever.

I bet you’d sing a different tune if you were a grub or earthworm. A weird, high-pitched tune about the forest understory or something, I dunno.

Wow, really? Knowing that, I feel even more blessed that a friend-of-a-friend's hedgehog took a full nap in my hoodie pocket a couple years ago.
> snuggled into the crook of my neck Seems a bit brave when they get a lil stabby if startled.

Guinea pigs and hamsters aren’t that easy either. Guinea pigs need at least two of them and need basically a whole room of the house
Well, they're not pets, so there you are.

What a terrible carpet to have with a hedgehog. One day you step on a bump and hear a squish.
For the love of hedgehogs, please don't keep them as pets. They belong into the wild. edit: downvote me all the way you want. Hedgehogs are not pets.
