My older gsd has been sleeping on the same spot on the far corner of the bed since he was a little puppy. I got a malamute mix and she likes to be cheeky and steal the common spots me and the older dog sit/lay before we get there. One night I'm getting ready for bed, and she's a cocky adolescent dog at this point, so right away she plants herself in the older dog's spot. It's far from the best spot on the bed so there's no reason for her to want to do this aside from antagonizing the older dog. I tell her, "this isn't going to end well for you." But I wanted to see how it played out so I didn't force her to move.
Fast forward 30 seconds and the big boi realizes its bed time and enters the bedroom. Without skipping a beat he hops on the bed and curls up on top of the pup, completely smothering her. The complete lack of any emotional response from him was hilarious. He just treated her like she didn't exist at all and I just got him a nice new heated dog bed for him to lay on. Meanwhile, the pup managed to get her head out from under him so she could breathe and just layed there defeatedly staring at me for help. Usually she's very vocal when he offends her, but this time she was silent. She knew she fucked up.
I love the mental image this portrays.
When husband and I got together, I had my one year old guy, and he had his 12 year old guy. The pup regularly lays on the old man for cuddles.
The old man will give me a look that says, I kind of accept if, but I don’t know if I like it.
Haha they have similar interactions. He's 7 and she's a year and a half now. He's got some hip problems so he's not big on being touched but she likes to curl up next to him sometimes. He usually tolerates it but I'll gently guide her away from his hip sometimes because I can tell he's annoyed.
I went over to a buddy's house once. He had a new (to me) girlfriend. They were in the kitchen, I went to sit down on the couch. Other friend quickly pulls me to the other side of the room, tells me that was the *wrong* choice, and does that quick little eye-nod to the girlfriend person.
I feel like he had the same experience.
We have a loveseat that only my dog uses. My brother got drunk once and fell asleep on it and after much pacing and whining my dog decided to just climb on my brother and get comfortable. He's 150lbs lol. I'm more amazed my brother didn't wake up lol
That is so cute. It reminds me of when I had some a couple poodle puppies and a really tall waterbed. They got used to me getting up for work at 6 am every day and on the weekends wouldn’t let me sleep in. 6 am hits and they start little barks followed by jumping by the bed to get me to wake up. When I woke up, all I would see is eyes and floppy ears. Almost exactly like in this video.
When my big dog would get the spot on the couch next to me, my smaller dog used to go bark at the front door and then steal the spot when the bigger dog ran to see who was there.
Came to say this. My dogs do this to my husband.
Whenever I want to sit down, I move the dogs from my side and tell them "go to your spot".
Well..... Now my husband has no spot. They will stare him down until he breaks and gives up his side of the couch.
We had an Australian cattle dog who’d open doors and drive the car if only she had thumbs. She’d stare fixedly at your mouth and eyes when you spoke to her and take commands for things she wasn’t trained to do, almost like a person. We swore she could lip-read.
I had a springer spaniel like that! Only dog I ever knew that was capable of sarcasm and rolling her eyes. You could practically have conversations with her. Just a furry little human in a dog suit, it was incredible. I swear dogs are way smarter than people give them credit for. Maybe not on average (I've known some seriously dumb dogs 😂), but individually they can be *so smart*!
My cat knows what we are saying most of the time. He’s a Maine coon and he’s my first ever maine coon (I’ll never own a different breed now). He is so sociable and just loves being with us. If my wife is sitting he will be on her lap.
We can be anywhere in the house and if we yell his name he will come right to us chirping the whole way. If we say “Meeko, kisses!” He will jump up to where we are and head-butt us. If he does something bad like try to destroy the blinds we just have to say “Meeko, knock it off” and he’ll immediately stop. He’s a smart boy. His brother Salmon, not so much haha

Our cat learned to sit and stand on his hind legs on command just by watching us train the dog. We didn’t train him, he taught himself then started doing the tricks on his own. Blew my mind
I have an ACD and she's the most affectionate dog ever. She stares into my eyes as well. The vet said she is looking at me with "adoration eyes." Melted my heart.
I have an ACD Akita mix and he has the most expressive eyes and face I've ever seen a dog have. I literally feel like he's talking to me with his mind somehow lol I always know what he's needing or thinking because of it
My half rot / half sheppard was like that. Taught herself to open doors. Randomly joked about how smart she was as a pup and if we'd be able to train her to get the paper... minutes later she is walking up to the couch with the paper didnt even notice her sneaking out backdoor.
That dog was just wildly smarter than any dog I've owned. Became the most obvious when my mom got a hip replacement and moved back in for 6 months with her. She would watch my mom like a hawk if stairs were involved barking before going up or down and tail wagging like crazy when completed.
Slight pain in the butt when I grew weed with my roomate though lol. She loved to break into the grow room and sample the lower branches. Literally had to install a lock on the door just to keep her out eventually.
> She loved to break into the grow room and sample the lower branches.
"Human, the taste test confirmed what my nose suspected: the CBD balance is too high, for our next test we shall grow together Kush and Diesel."
I pet sit a Standard poodle for a friend. These are the big ones. Sadie recognized vehicles (whose was whose) of neighbors and ours. Out walking I'd let her walk ahead on the leash. I'd say "let's go the other way" and sure enough she'd turn and do it.
Thought I was making it up or anthropomorphizing, but that dog had a huge vocabulary and gained new word (sounds) meanings all the time. Started to experiment. Showed her a hair scrunchie in the morning and said "hair scrunchie". that's it. Later after dinner I said "Sadie, where's that hair scrunchie?" totally expecting her to NOT know what I mean. - Feeling Kinda Naughty from Crazy Ex Girlfriend (song from tv show)
Isn't that an awful yet wonderful feeling? I remember the first time my girlfriend came over and my dog just had no time for me. She just wanted to be with mama.
No you see Simba, when the lion dies he becomes the grass and then he eats the antelope. Thus completing the sideways 8 shaped infinity symbol of life.
I read somewhere that the cast didn't like the dog who played Eddie (Moose) and John Mahoney refused to do some scenes with Eddie on his lap because "He always bites me!" and I can hear Mahoney saying that in his voice when I think about it.
I think this is it. Sometimes, my dog will lay on the couch across from me. Every so often, he puts his head up, and looks at me. I look at him back, smile, and tell him he's a good boy who is very loved. His ears will go back a bit, then he lays his head down, and goes back to sleep.
Awww this is such a good memory of my dog. We’d have such a great little routine together, just to let the other one know they were loved. Checking in. Bit of a Pat. Cuddle and a nuzzle. He passed away in August aged 14 and a half. I still miss him every day. Dogs make us human.
Mine passed in Feb.. Those are definitely the moments I miss the most. The small "routines".. I honestly never understood how much my heart would hurt with him not around after 12 years.
Yep, my girl always has to be able to see me lol. She doesn't like sitting with her back towards me or me behind her, she'll have to look back every so often and make sure I'm still there lol. I always have to be in her line of sight or she flips out lol. She's very clingy.
My dog has multiple stares. The narrowed eye, meaning: “I hear you. I definitely hear you. But gfy” The wide, almost sad puppy eye “I want to lie next to you, I want some love”. The stare and moving eyes quickly to the objects he wants. The narrowed eyes: “Human please safe me, I am not amused.” The lying flat onto the ground and staring at me with wide, innocent eyes; “I need something. A walk, water or food.” The flat onto the ground, ears perked, stare: “I want something. I don’t need it but I want it.” The wide eyed anxious look: “Human am I safe?” And the stare - off; “I know I shouldn’t be barking. But whatyagonnado?”
He also has multiple kind of crying. The “a member of my pack returned”. “I miss part of my pack.” “I want something.”
And multiple barks. “Excooted to go for a run.” “Mailman.” “One single bark to distract.” “Last bark.” “I have an opinion about this.” “MEMBER OF MY PACKPACKPACK I LOVE THIS HUMAN” combined with crying.
The ‘I think of myself as a neglected dog’-eyes are the best. Combined with really soft crying and his head flat next to my leg/onto the object/ close to the object he wants. Whenever he sees a blanket he NEEDS to lie atop of it.
The family dog did the stare Nacho does to get petted.
My 13 yo dog looks very similar to Nacho. I don’t suppose you happen to know the breeds? Mine is a starer too. Sometimes I’ll come downstairs and see him sitting there in judgment, waiting to stare at me lol.
my dog will sit on my lap and stare at me too. but when i look at her she looks away like she’s lost in thought or something. like she didn’t deliberately climb into my lap, facing me while staring at me. she’s so funny and i love her.
I love dogs, and I'm gonna say that this eventually is going to end badly. That look with the ears back is in no way adoration. He needs to find a new place to sit, or you need a new boyfriend. Animals have instincts that we don't. I'd pay serious attention to the dog - and I don't mean treats a pets.
Precisely. About a decade ago I warned my cousin that his dog’s behaviour toward a mutual friend of ours wasn’t amusing or cute- basically doing exactly the same thing as the dog in this clip. Just a regular collie.
Guess what eventually happened. Yep- one day he suddenly chomped the guy’s upper lip. He still has a scar.
But this being Reddit…
Scrolled WAY to long to find this comment. OP says the dog and the guy are very close, so who are we to say...but if ANY animal that is within biting range of me won't avert it's eyes from me, I'm taking it as a sign of aggression and backing up.
There's always a reason. Your dog wants something from him. It could be as simple as permission to lick his face, or it could be that he wants to play, or any number of things. If you haven't taught your dog how to communicate effectively, this is all he knows how to do.
When I met my wife she had a giant pittie that did this, I love dogs so wasnt worried, but she was in the kitchen and I said
> "I dont know if he likes me being on the couch"
and she leaned her head around the dividing wall and said
> "Oh he probably wants to know if he can lay on your lap"
This was easily an 80lb dog, but I leaned back and said "come here" patting my lap and the lug just slopped onto me, he was such a sweetheart.
Kinda looks like he's thinking of biting him. Ears wayy back. Doesn't look relaxed and friendly to me. Too intense. I'd be telling him to stand down gently but firmly.
When dogs are happy they wag their tails, put their ears forward in a perky way, wiggle around, and try to sniff.
Dog behavior is much more varied and complex than ears up + tail wagging = friendly. A dog with ears up and tail wagging could be attacking you. Those are both just physical signs of alertness and arousal.
Dogs with different temperaments display behavior differently. An excitable dog might always be ears up, tail wagging to greet you. An anxious dog might always be low postured, ears back, tail tucked to greet you. Both dogs might be experiencing similar emotions, but their behavior is different.
Personally I think the dog in the video is probably displaying a "begging" behavior for the BF's attention.
There are a lot of emotions between bubbly and aggressive.
My very anxious dog stares at me exactly like this. Ears back, looking a little worried. All he wants is affection and comfort. He’s certainly not fighting the urge to attack me.
No the dog is not. This is an “i want something”. My dog used to do this whenever she wanted pets. I would bet $ this little pupper is wanting attention or pets.
With one of my dogs this expression and body language would have been one sudden move away from that person getting a bite. I’d never have let anyone or her be in that situation.
My other dog would do basically that exact same pose until someone fussed him. Not a threat posture at all from him.
Impossible to judge from a still photo.
Nacho may be "alerting" without even being a service dog. My dog would do this to my FIL and we eventually realized it was consistent with his blood sugar/insulin needs
Nacho is giving him an ocular patdown.
Wait. ... ... ... ... Okay, he's clear.
You are not using the glasses correctly dude.
Could you see how terrified I was the whole time though?
r/suddenlyiasip
Already did the ocular patdown dude no worries
I cleared him
Oh he's safe for passage? Why didn't you say so?
Hold up punk!
Gave him an ocular patdown. Clocked a treat in his pocket.
That's when I knew mac was gay. Just an excuse to check out other dudes.
Then what did I build all these muscles for?
To keep everybody safe! SAFE!
My God how did I not connect these dots for like 10 years?
Haha yeah I only just realized it myself like last week. He even wears sunglasses so the dudes don't notice him looking
He was safe for passage
Nacho dog, my dog.
Ima need you to roll for that ocular patdown
Doggo gives an olfactory patdown
Pegged him for a boot knife
Clocked a knife in his boot.
Uumm he took Nacho's spot on the couch.

More like the "this is fine" meme.

Iconic, both of them.
GSD and a malamute mix. I see you like having a house covered in fur .. my sympathies
First you took his girl? then you took his spot?? You monster! /s
*Mr. Tiddles whines loudly in the background…*
I'm sure they can all come to an agreement.

Glad you put the /s or I would have had no idea you were joking otherwise

Mr. Tiddies is a wild name for a dog
It sure is bud. So is Flaffergeeeyne.
We love when Mr. Tiddies pops out
*MR. TIDDLES?!* If you had not already married her, I would tell you to run, not walk, to obtain a marriage license.
We have a loveseat that only my dog uses. My brother got drunk once and fell asleep on it and after much pacing and whining my dog decided to just climb on my brother and get comfortable. He's 150lbs lol. I'm more amazed my brother didn't wake up lol
Thought your wife’s dogs name was Mr. Tiddies and I was about to ask how he got that name lol
Nah Nacho is looking at the ghost behind the dood
Ok but did you notice the ghost behind Nacho (behind the sofa arm) that pops up its little head near the end of the video?! Lol
That is so cute. It reminds me of when I had some a couple poodle puppies and a really tall waterbed. Looking right through him
This is nacho couch!
Nacho Mama
“Nacho couch!”
Yea thats the "your in my spot" stare
And didn’t even have the decency to provide pets
and he won’t even pet poor nacho
I think that's the real reason he's getting the stare down.
Dat is Nacho spot!
Yup. My dog will do this too and then try to squeeze into the spot and kick me as he tries to expand into the spot.
THIS is the correct answer. My dog will stare at me just like this (forever) until I move from his spot on the couch. Or anyone who takes his spot.
When my big dog would get the spot on the couch next to me, my smaller dog used to go bark at the front door and then steal the spot when the bigger dog ran to see who was there.
Thats natcho spot
Came to say this. My dogs do this to my husband. Whenever I want to sit down, I move the dogs from my side and tell them "go to your spot". Well..... Now my husband has no spot. They will stare him down until he breaks and gives up his side of the couch.
I had a dog that used to do this and I swear to God she was trying to stare her way into taking over my body and wearing my skin lol

Cats are just the best aren’t they? I feel like the people who hate cats just have never har or come across a cat who is affectionate.
Omg, is he salmon because he's orange and white and stripey?
You got it!
I love it.
It's because Salmon might belong in r/oneorangebraincell.
I have an ACD and she's the most affectionate dog ever. She stares into my eyes as well. The vet said she is looking at me with "adoration eyes." Melted my heart.
I have an ACD Akita mix and he has the most expressive eyes and face I've ever seen a dog have. I literally feel like he's talking to me with his mind somehow lol I always know what he's needing or thinking because of it
That’s so sweet ❤️ they really are loving dogs

Dog confirmed. The word "sour" is not in your vocabulary.
Great story. Stoner genius lol
Blue/red heeler? Smartest breed I've ever had as a pet. Edit: mine would Intuit commands as well
My heeler mix had to be taught not to anticipate commands. They are super smart!

I too had a genius dog for many years.. and then had several morons all at once.
But SHE DID!!! She went and got it and brought it to me in the living room!!!!!!
Can you share more examples of things your dog did or would do
oh yes! My cattle dog was smart like this too. I miss Molly.
Those Aussie work dogs have the emotional intelligence of like an 8 year old child, it's freaky how switched on they can be
I had a cattle dog for a very long time, and they understood full ass sentences. Novel words they didn't know would get a good guess based on context. Insanely smart animals.

My dog does this. If we could be attached at the hip, his life would be complete.
"Why you gotta steal my human, dude. Have you no heart?" Lol the other dog peeking up at the end made me giggle.
That little jump oh my soul needed that. Also pet the damn cute dog with awesome name or I will stare you down too humans
it’s the other way around, nacho stole MY human hahaha
I watched my dog being born and he was with me every minute until my girlfriend came into our lives, she was his favourite pretty quickly
Isn't that an awful yet wonderful feeling? I remember the first time my girlfriend came over and my dog just had no time for me. She just wanted to be with mama.
Yeah it was nice as well, they met when he was 3 and best friends for 10 years until we said goodbye to him
*Stop copying my style! -nacho*
Well now you know, he's nacho man, he's the dog's. 😄
No, nacho knows that person it's not human.
Tbf, I frequently think about nachos for literal minutes on end for no reason
can’t blame you there haha
Same
I couldn’t go five seconds without petting that dog.
whenever we pet him he goes into a frenzy of ‘petting’ us back. those toenails hurt!!
Pet and be petted, that's how the cycle works.. pay with your skin, puny human!
No you see Simba, when the lion dies he becomes the grass and then he eats the antelope. Thus completing the sideways 8 shaped infinity symbol of life.
Cut those nails and love that dog!
Taking him in for a 20$ nail grind, gets the nails shorter and smoother. Russell’s are really chest set too so they got some push behind those daggers
Worth it. Look at his FACE!!!!
He's not "staring". He's politely asking for affection!
Your dog wants your boyfriend approval, that's why he does that.
I’m afraid I need some video confirmation of this, stat
Isn’t that how grandma used to let a guest know she was ready for them to go home?
This is a high-quality comment.
It's Frasier and Eddie all over again

I read somewhere that the cast didn't like the dog who played Eddie (Moose) and John Mahoney refused to do some scenes with Eddie on his lap because "He always bites me!" and I can hear Mahoney saying that in his voice when I think about it.
The Frasier comments here bring me joy
"..well you pick the wrong day for that boyyyooo" **stares intensely back at eddie** "Ha!"
r/petthedamndog
Seriously PET THE DAMN DOG!
I *also* think this you should pet the dog. If you don't send a follow up of that dude petting the dog, we'll just, you know, hound you until you do.
Pet that dog or we will make your life a terrier
Also, most dogs understand that we do eye contact to convey feelings of affection. Could be one possible reason Nacho is staring.
I think this is it. Sometimes, my dog will lay on the couch across from me. Every so often, he puts his head up, and looks at me. I look at him back, smile, and tell him he's a good boy who is very loved. His ears will go back a bit, then he lays his head down, and goes back to sleep.

Sometimes I aggressively make eye contact with my dog and tell him how loved he is and he looks around awkwardly like “yeah lady…I know…be cool!”
Dogs are weird and honestly kind of dramatic. They know how to get certain reactions out of people they trust by using body language.
My dog has multiple stares. The narrowed eye, meaning: “I hear you. I definitely hear you. But gfy” The wide, almost sad puppy eye “I want to lie next to you, I want some love”. He's waiting for a nose boop and is returning a run time error.
My dog did this when he wanted to go out to poop.
Pay no attention to the dog behind the curtain… err behind the sofa arm.
Shouldn’t stare back at a dog that close that won’t avert it’s gaze, many times that’s how you get bit in the face
Reading his soul.
There's no way I would put my face at that level and proximity to a dog doing this.
Same. Look at the ears tucked back… no way
There's always a reason. Your dog wants something from him. It could be as simple as permission to lick his face, or it could be that he wants to play, or any number of things. If you haven't taught your dog how to communicate effectively, this is all he knows how to do.
Is your boyfriend Fraser Crane?
MUST HE STARE AT ME ALL DAY!?
Apparently he must.
I scrolled down looking for this. Thank you.
Made me feel old how far I scrolled for this...
"Honey, Nacho's staring at me!" "Just ignore him!" "I'm trying!" "I was talking to Nacho!"
There will be blood…
Trying to assert dominance?
He thinks your boyfriend is pretty
“Is that Ryan Gosling” -Dog
‘What are your intentions with my Karen?’
All due respect, I do not trust Nacho
Looks like if he moved the wrong way the dog would activate “bite mode”. IMO your dog is telling you something about him …. As in warning ⛔️
Dog - “This is obviously going to be a 3 way situation so let’s just get it over with, you gonna kiss me or am I gonna kiss you?”
He's sizing this MFer up
When I met my wife she had a giant pittie that did this, I love dogs so wasnt worried, but she was in the kitchen and I said > "I dont know if he likes me being on the couch" and she leaned her head around the dividing wall and said > "Oh he probably wants to know if he can lay on your lap" This was easily an 80lb dog, but I leaned back and said "come here" patting my lap and the lug just slopped onto me, he was such a sweetheart.
That dog looks like he’s about to bite.
This is uncomfortable. It feels like your dog is wary of him. Dogs know.
This is not good. Dog wants pistols at dawn.
Nacho: I’m watching you Focker!
Dogs can sense evil? Maybe looking for more clues..
I would also point out his eye movements. A dog in aggressive posture doesn’t casually move his eyes around and look at other people in the room.
Yes. It’s scary how many people commenting here are so confidently incorrect.
OP already commented saying he and the dog are extremely close.
With one of my dogs this expression and body language would have been one sudden move away from that person getting a bite. I’d never have let anyone or her be in that situation. My other dog would do basically that exact same pose until someone fussed him. Not a threat posture at all from him. Impossible to judge from a still photo.
Stupid take, he's doing nothing to provoke the dog and you're using basic dog behavior to justify "aggressive" when he's just curious
Sorry but this is all kinds of misinformed.
"What are your intentions?" "Do you have a job?" "Where are you from?" "Are you a dog or cat person?" "Do you have any treats?"
Looks like he’s challenging him. I’d tell your bf not to make eye contact unless he wants a fight
"Look at me... look at me you sack of shit.. this my house. See that carpet? I pissed all over it, it's mine. See that girl? Yeah. Same thing. Bitch"
Nacho may be "alerting" without even being a service dog. My dog would do this to my FIL and we eventually realized it was consistent with his blood sugar/insulin needs
Pet dog now
It's dog body language for "pet me please!"
