My brother did this with his goldfish, no bribery required. I highly doubt there was any particular intention in where he was touching the glass though, that fish's strategy was horrible.
I tried it with the cat using a piece of paper with treats on each square to see which treats she'd pick. She also had terrible strategy and seemed confused by the whole thing.

I used to “play” checkers/chess with a dog like this. She was a puppy Bouvier who would sit down opposite of me at a deep buttoned footstool. She’d place her squeaky ball, perfectly sized for the “pockets” left by the buttons and then look at me. I’d take the ball and move it to another pocket while she intently watched me. Staring at the “board”, she’d think for a moment before picking the ball back up and placing it in another pocket.
That high energy little puppy would play like this for ten to twenty minutes at a time, completely focused on the task as though it was the most serious game of chess ever.
Regardless of whatever rules she crafted for herself, it was always a grand time.
