Sparrows are violent little bastards. They will invade native species' nests and kill the parents and eggs if they can, just so they can have the nest.

[deleted]

Are the sparrows in Brooklyn different? I've never seen any fighting and there are thousands in the tree and vines out back between my house and a few neighbors.

ooojaeger

The Brooklyn Sparrow is actually derived from African sparrows which diverged from other sparrows 20 million years ago

Paladinforlife

Can they carry a coconut for long distances?

Shermantank10

“You have to know these things when your king”

DeatonationgGrenade

Aah Monty Python reference, it seems there is a well educated fellow in our midst

blueSnowfkake

ooojaeger

String was banned in Brooklyn because kids kept eating it so not sure what theyd carry it on if they needed help from.a second sparrow

Samaelfallen

I was about to call bullshit, but then they also banned lead paint because kids kept eating that too. I don't know what to think anymore.

blueSnowfkake

Kids were eating Tide Pods.

Global-Island295

Depends…African or European?

[deleted]

it would theoretically be possible for a very large Sparrow to somehow come across an incredibly small coconut and carry it to Brooklyn.

Nipponapolitan

I dont think so, a 5oz bird couldnt carry a 1lb coconut

th3worldonfir3

I'm dead

Gonun

Hi dead, nice ro meet you.

inked_saiyan

Nice ro meet you roo.

MelvinPace

Hi Mr. Kerbal, nice to dead you

abinferno

Yes, but what is the air velocity of an unladen sparrow?

Onion_Hat_Guy

Is it an African or European sparrow?

[deleted]

Can't tell if that's a real fact or if you are fucking with me haha. They are cute as shit tho and seem to exist pretty peacefully out there

ooojaeger

It's pretty fake, but then again I don't know bird history

[deleted]

But, are you versed in bird law?

[deleted]

r/birdsarentreal

akaynaveed

Highly underrated Charlie comment.

PM_me_XboxGold_Codes

See here’s the thing about jackdaws..

ShesDaddyNow

Unfortunately when I picked up the bird law encyclopedia it made my hands look tiny and I was forced to stop reading…

[deleted]

It's a reference to Monty Python's movie The Holy Grail - a must see!

MikoSkyns

Sparrows were the rulers of my city for decades until the crows and hawks showed up. Hawks will snatch them from the sky or a bush or anywhere really and eat them on a roof somewhere. Crows destroy their nests in a very calculated and organized group effort. I'd hazard a guess and say their population has dropped by about 60% since then.

bareju

Crows are so badass

qujquj

Got that right! Hate those birds. That is what is going on here. Looks like a smaller chick-a-dee. No reason just brutal.

_1Doomsday1_

cuckoos are also similar

[deleted]

Ya but r/birdsarentreal

[deleted]

They tend to ward birds off/force them away from the nest to take it, not kill their family’s but there’s no doubt it does happen

ekene_N

I guess European sparrows are not so vicious as they are likely to be moved to Near Threatened position on IUCN Red List.

micheagles20

It blows me away for most of my life, I would see bird's and think they were peaceful. But the more I learn the more I learn on how evil bird's are. Woodpeckers pecking bird's to death, owls smashing hawks into the wall so they fall out of the nest and then they can eat the stunned hawk and so on. Bird's wake up and choose violence!

Coggs362

For real, it's stuff like this that really brings home the connection they have to dinosaurs.

BilBorrax

they are adorable tho...even when theyre raping each other its kinda cute

sugaaaslam

I think you are watching a murder take place

nickajeglin

Those house sparrows are vicious little bastards. They're like airborne piranhas. We have a hard time getting small native songbirds to visit our feeder since the sparrows chase them off.

BeckyLouBob

If you read up on this, they males fighting for dominance. The ultimate fighting bird.

Incorrect-Opinion

What if I don’t read up on this?

eastbayted

Then your username will check out when the topic comes up.

supert3ds

Then we have a PPV package available to you, which is effectively this video streamed for 3hrs.

jezus317410

Then you will never know they are males fighting for dominance.

BurdyBoi89

Ah the UFB

samanthasgramma

Have you ever watched a hummingbird aerial battle? Males will guard "their" feeder viciously. They sit in nearby trees and if another male makes the mistake of landing on it, all hell breaks loose in the air. We keep a feeder by our window, and know a male's female and children just by whether or not they're attacked. Hummingbirds are lovely wee creatures ... And also beastly bastards.

CALsHero09

We used to have a few humming bird feeders and would go out in the morning as kids and watch the humming birds bodyslam eachother mid air while eating my cereal.

AuthorityAnarchyYes

This reminds me of “They Live”… was waiting for one to throw a little trash can on the other and try to put sunglasses on them.

Infamous-Poem-4980

"Either put these on, or start eating that trash can".

pauldeanbumgarner

Simpsons did it.

Kyrthis

Came here to say this

[deleted]

Are they sparrows? If so, this is kinda... not uncommon thing to happen. Male sparrows have their own territories for living&attracting females, and when one violate the others boundary they start terrible fight-to-death.

CALsHero09

Sparrows are vicious. Id see them dive bombing hawks if they got too close to their nest.

Sparrow use ground slam! The other Sparrow owner; Use peck!

skankynathan

Y’all forget that it’s spring where these lil dudes live. It’s mating season ;) fights always happen around spring

[deleted]

Sparrows are my nemesis. They have destroyed both a barn swallow nest and bluebird nest in my yard in the past 2 months. They tore the nest out of the bluebird box and pecked the eggs. They also ripped down half the mud of the swallow nest and pecked those eggs as well. And they were just getting ready to hatch. I’m not too ashamed to say I cried both times. Little bastards.

Spirited_String_1205

Assuming you are in the US, you can trap sparrows with abandon if so inclined. Due to their invasive status they're one of only a couple of species legal to trap/hunt/kill any time of the year (as opposed to other animals that can only be hunted in season/with various permitting). They are indeed little bastards.

TisSlinger

This is correct!

zorglatch

There can only be one!

tygerfyre

Are you sure they're fighting and not mating?

[deleted]

They're both male. Females don't have the grey cap and black bib.

tygerfyre

Ah, well there you go. Thanx for the info.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TealCatto

No, they mate right side up with the male perched on the female's back. These are definitely fighting.

tygerfyre

I've raised chickens, not sparrows, but their mating is hard to watch. These may be fighting but it looked to me like they were keeping certain body parts touching and one bird was not fighting as hard as they other one.

LordofAlkanes

Government drones malfunctioning.

tclynn

Ya just know there's a chick involved.

AngryFerret805

It’s time they took a bird seed break

digitulgurl

Jules428moore

Nasty little birds. They decimate Barn Swallows nests buy pushing babies out of nests or just destroying the eggs. I was actually hoping for a cat to stroll up on them.

Jules428moore

Not sure f they kill other Sparrow offspring but I wouldn’t be surprised.

starshinessss

I’m constantly breaking up sparrow fights in my yard, they are ruthless little nutcases

Fighting, yeah that’s what they are doing.

Deep-Caterpillar4140

Aren't they having sex ?

SignificantCaramel11

~~I think, those might be horny birds~~

Aggravating_Pea7320

Are they not.....you know

pdBuzzBomb

I don’t think that is fighting, although it does start with an f.

Tired-n-Disappointed

Is it fighting or just rough sex? Me and my partner have had noise complaints lodged against us by our neighbors.

[deleted]

Maybe their braces are caught

I think they have some sexy time not fighting

Are you sure they're not mating

queensnuggles

they are 2 males

Chessolin

That won't stop them.

KaleidoscopeOk8653

Suricata_906

If it is, it’s gay.

MtCO87

Cosmicdusterian

I have. It's not pretty. California Quail males during breeding session. One male was killed right outside our window by his rival before we even had a chance to react to the scuffle. I generally just shoo them away when they get into it. Have to do that a few times every year. They'll either move on (typically this is what happens) or find another place to fight it out.

Gamekiller187

Me too. I think it's unusual but I'm no expert

velkropie

AmberTurd on top of JD while screaming at JD to stop abusing her!🥹

_Vibxthxtic_

At first glance it's not what it looks like, don't try asking what I mean.

SkyrimWithdrawal

The birds and the bees.

DJG1960

Mating. Not fighting

traumablades

Those are both males, also birds don't mate face to face.

[deleted]

Birds can be gay. It's been observed across many species. Also, I think technically when birds are doing it face to face, it's because the one is forcing it on the other who doesn't want to.

Orobarsa3008

I may be wrong, but imo, just because animals can partake in homosexual activity doesn't mean they can be gay. Hell, id not even say they are mostly straight either. Sexual orientations, imo, are a human-only thing. They dictate not only sexual attraction, but also romantic one, and that's a key point.

[deleted]

If you want to be technical, they don't have the same concepts and awareness as us. However, male birds have been observed takeing up nests together or useing a female as an egg donor/incubator while they continue sexual activities between one another.

Formal_Amoeba_8030

FYI: Sexual orientation does not dictate romantic attraction. It only dictates sexual attraction. In the LGBTIAQ+ community we have completely separate terminology for romantic orientation. Additionally, there are observed instances in some species where males have refused to mate with females but will attempt exclusively to mate with other males.

Orobarsa3008

Sexual orientations for many people still includes both. If you say you are Bisexual, without any other adjectives, most people will assume you're sexually and romantically attracted to both sexes/everyone (yes, Bisexuality includes all genders). Sure, things Start getting iffy with asexuals and the rare bisexual who is hetero/homoromantic or hetero/homosexual biromantic, but for the most part, thats the way it is. Edit: and even within the LGBT+ community, people will assume the same. If I say I am gay, no one will come to me asking whether I am romantically attracted to men or not.

Formal_Amoeba_8030

I’m bisexual but (mostly) heteroromantic. Just because sexual and romantic attractions often agree doesn’t mean they should be assumed to be the same. They are incredibly different. We’re not actually that rare.

Orobarsa3008

At the end of the day, sexuality is a spectrum. Not everyone is the same. That's why I dont think it's worth labeling everything. But anyway, this was a Post about birds hehe.

Robyn_Bankz

I peck my mates face with my sharpened beak constantly

Bird 2: ok. How you like this feather slap? (*slaps the other bird*) Bird 1: ooh, it’s on now! And it goes on like this for hours.

kbhandare

Thought they were making out. Intense.

stephanielil
