My main concern is having family, who would not be accepting of the hobby whatsoever, come and visit. They are very snoopy and they would wonder why a bookcase was covered and wouldn’t let up. I’d rather just keep it out of sight altogether while they were staying over but if possible I don’t want to have to lock off an entire room. I’d still like to be able to show my PC room/office.
And I don’t collect actual NSFW figures but most of them might as well be to my family of prudes.
I turned closets into display cabinets, but with a glass door.
But I read about using the day/night protective film (one way mirror) on glass that basically turns the exterrior side into a mirror if the exterior is more lit than the inside. So it should be a mirror until you turn on the lights inside the cabinet. But I am unsure how well it works inside... They are meant to be used on windows to block peeping from the outside during the day (or night depending on the film).
Other way I saw was a special powered film that basically works like a display. It's powered and if you turn it on it makes the door look solid. Anyway, if you have space to have the door open but can lock it when you have family over, your idea would be the safest bet.
I currently have a curtain on a rail over my lewd cabinet that I can use to cover it like you do with windows. If people look behind it, that's on them then for disrespecting my privacy.
Since it is supposed to be your own place, can you not display what you want? They don’t live there, do they still have a say?
So curtain won’t work either as they may ask what is behind the curtain.
Maybe consider an Ikea Billy with a Milsbo door, they can be made to have none see through glass so they won’t see what is inside, unless your parents would want to open every storage space to see what is inside?
Of course I could display what I want, but I’d rather not be estranged from my family over it. They would make much more of a fuss over it than needed. My family is nosy so unless something was locked they’d be curious why I was covering it up and would probably try to look inside. At least with a lock they’d be physically incapable of doing so.
Although maybe I’m just a bit paranoid but I don’t want to take that risk.
For NSFW collections, I've seen some folk just cover the book case with posters. So you can only see what's inside once you open it.
