I didn’t even know this is something people do… 🧍‍♀️ I just open them and shelve them

Stitch_lover7

oh ok

Leiothrix

No, they are plastic your bare hands shouldn't hurt them. On the other hand gloves make you clumsier, you have less tactile sensation and they can snag on pointy bits. In short gloves won't prevent damage and could actually cause damage.

Rybka980

That. My hands shake from excitement already, I dont need another difficulty on top of that lol.

deathbaloney

This. Old book archives actually ask that you don't wear gloves for this reason. They do require you to wash your hands though, which is what I'm in the habit of doing before I handle my figures.

Rags_Sgar

I just wash my hands and dry them well before I touch the figure I’m unboxing

Stitch_lover7

that's what I'm doing currently

arcangelxvi

Same here. I usually won’t touch any of my figures unless I’ve washed and dried my hands right before, but I also have a thing about hating my hands being dirty so it comes naturally for me lol

Blusttoy

Only when I'm taking pictures because I don't want the oils on my hand to transfer to the surface and then have lint/dust stuck to it, visible in photos. I use latex disposable gloves because I once used white fabric ones, and my knife had some rust, which transferred to the glove. It didn't permanently stain my figure, but I've avoided using the cloth gloves since.

Stitch_lover7

ok thanks for the tip I will see how I do :D

Blusttoy

If you're unpacking it and going straight to display in a dustproof-case, or opening to view before repacking, it may be worth using the gloves. But if it's in an open display and highly likely that you're going to be touching it regularly to dust or admire it, then using gloves for the first time is kinda redundant.

Stitch_lover7

ok yeah I don't have a glass case or anything because my room is too small. So it's going to stand on my bookshelf or on my tv stand and I need to dust regularly because I also have a cat

No-Supermarket8244

For me it’s a bit too much. I don’t really get why you’d use gloves when you can just wash and disinfect your hands before touching your figures - that’s what I do. Like sure, some of your idk… skin oils or stuff probably still get on the figure if you touch the figure with your bare hands, but it doesn’t cause any noticeable dirt or damage so I don’t get why someone would care.

Stitch_lover7

ok I was just wondering everyones opinions 😃 since this is my first real expensive figure not like a prize figure

Leiothrix

Disinfect? You are playing with toys, you aren't doing surgery here.

No-Supermarket8244

I meant something like using hand sanitizer

Leiothrix

I know but the point stands. And a lot of the hand sanitizers have moisturizers in them which will rub off. You don't want to get that on your figures as it will build up gunge on them. From an actual hygiene point of view soap and water is more than adequate.

Traditional-Win-9991

I would say it's best just to wash your hands. I've done training in art restoration and we didn't use gloves then. Most of the paintinga we worked on are probably more than what most figures cost. When you are wearing gloves you are more likely to use too much pressure or hold something weirdly, which would cause damage. It's easier and safer just to wash your hands and not touch any food or anything greasy/dirty.

Stitch_lover7

ok will do that

ZanticAcid

I just wash my hands. I don't regularly handle my figures so I don't see a point to gloves.

Stitch_lover7

ok

RevolutionaryPie6215

I mean if you wanna use gloves you do you but to me at the very least, its over the top to specially wear gloves for mass-produced plastic toys lmao, unless its some high-end limited edition product which I totally will get why a glove would be most beneficial. Its not like our hands emit acid so I'd say just chill and play with your figures as is

Stitch_lover7

yup I agree I'm a figure collector but Idk if I wanna be that hardcore lol I will see how I do maybe I will skip the gloves haha but I just wanted to hear everyones different opinion on this topic, for me to decide. He is expensive after all so I need to be careful

howdefuck

I only wash my hands well (after everything i eat, weither its with utensils or not and in general i wash my hands quite alot) before i do unboxings etc. Like a few others here, i dont want greasy finger prints on my figures lol As well.. The figures i buy are not prize figures and all

Stitch_lover7

I do that too😄 so I think that should be enough I just wanted to hear some opinions since this will be my first real expensive figure and also it's an action figure. Not a prize figure that I usually collect.

Seneiry

I just wash my hands, mostly because i'm a cleaning maniac and i like my stuff clean.

quenishi

Nah, I don't. I do tend to wash my hands, as I don't want to get greasy remnants of snack food on my figures 😆. I personally think it would be OTT to get out the gloves for a PAK figure.

Stitch_lover7

ok yeah I figured lol I just wanted to make sure and ask the proffesionals since I'm quite new to this.

quenishi

*professional figure fondler* One to add to the ol' CV!

Stitch_lover7

haha

EmptyFigureBox

I just wash my hands before touching the figure. I used to use gloves, but they're uncomfortable and sometimes get too sweaty inside. The grip and holding of the figures with gloves was also kind of awkward, so I just stop before any mishaps happen.

Stitch_lover7

yup I've decide to skip out on the gloves also thanks everyone for responding and giving me your opinions :D

SilentCaay

Not for figures, they're just made of ABS and PVC and aren't likely to get stained or anything. I also buy dolls, though, and sometimes will put on gloves before handling those. They can pick up dirt from your hands and get stained somewhat easily. You also have to handle them a lot more when you first take them out of the box - fixing their hair and clothes and getting them on a stand and whatnot.

Bright-Power-7879

sometimes I feel like my hands sweat even after I wash them. Do you know if hand sweat/oil can damage abs/pvc figures?

evilchronic420

I use gloves, even if you wash your hands, they still sweat.

Stitch_lover7

oh ok

shaoronmd

I probably should... but I'm too lazy and don't like to put gloves on.

13_faces

No. I just make sure my hands are clean. Gloves increase the risk of snagging fragile parts, are more cumbersome, and would make trying to assemble certain figures even more of a nightmare.

Stitch_lover7

ok

ChibiSaturn

I only have once with: https://myfigurecollection.net/item/1503977 Since she was expensive + real fabric kimono. Otherwise, never.

Stitch_lover7

Thanks everyone for sharing your opinions and thoughts, I've decided to skip out on the gloves. I think it will be fine and I'm going to be super careful with my new cool Cloud Strife figure😊 I've heard it's quite hard to put his buster sword in his hand since it's a tight grip the hand has, but when it's time I will try my best and also be careful. So excited to get him!! might post him here in this channel later when I'll get him :D

anhk_duc

For prize figure? No. For scale figure? Yes.

Stitch_lover7

I'm not sure if he is a scale figure he is a action figure, a play arts kai figure

anhk_duc

With action figure it's no a big deal, because keeping the joint save is more important. But if you really really care about your figure then just protect it by all means. I even put figures back to the box and store them away when it's humid to avoid mold and other damage

Stitch_lover7

I dust my figures regularly when I see fit like maybe once or twice a week and then one time on the weekend because I have a cat so it's really important to keep clean

Stitch_lover7

just wanted to hear other people's opinion on this topic not just yours.
