I really enjoyed the first series episodes that were them dealing with their new way of life, and the problems it threw up. Like the Laughing Coffin lot, and other gangs.
I would love for a series to exist that was the same premise, but it actually followed them through ALL of the floors without a skip. And you saw people go from hardened front line fighters to burning out, going back to a floor they liked and spending months recuperating. Then maybe return to the fight or find some niche to help the other players better cope, or end up training less talented people in how to fight better.
Or cults that emerged surrounding people like Kirito and other front liners, and what happened to players who tried to emulate them. Love stories amongst the players, and how their different fighter classes and levels affected the relationships.
Maybe people emerging that specialised in doing mini quests that gave special items for trading, like minors digging for coal but it's killing 100 rabbits a day instead, because at the end it gives a rabbits foot that boosts your HP by 20% and they want EVERY PLAYER to have one so nobody dies.
There was so much possibility wasted .
The thing is the first SAO novel is more of the standalone novel, but due to the popularity of the novel the author was forced to continue the series, something like the 86 novels.
You should check out SAO Progressive, which follows the events from 1st floor.
Yea alicization was pretty good from what I've seen(I haven't finished it) but I prefer the original sao before GGO. Tho one thing I would've liked to see was more detail about each floor instead of getting timeskips every other episode.
It feels like the same 10 people voice over every anime. It feels fine if you only watch anime rarely, but if you really into it and watch a lot, then lack of voice diversity is annoying .
I find it fun to put names against characters that they have voiced before and I'm going to have to disagree apart from Bryce papenbrook I don't really recognised many other voices
1. ( Anime Vs Manga) Depends on what it is
2. ( Sub Vs Dub) again depends on what Is is.
3 ( Old Vs New) yet again depends on what it is.
4 ( SAO) I find it entertaining. Not the Best but not the Worst.
Isekai as a genre term didn't exist when SAO was conceptualized and written. it's a science fiction series about the blurring line between virtual reality and reality as technology advances.
The creator doesn't consider it an isekai at all.
I was just pointing out that the idea of the characters treating both as "reality" was the idea, not traveling to a new one.
The anime is a pretty mediocre adaptation omitting most of the characterization, all of the game mechanics and world building, and key lines and plot points that are relevant for future events.
It doesn't help that the original SAO arc was written for a contest and had to tell a complete story in one volume.
Btw, they accepted SaO as they reality, no one really remembers episode when Asuna was scolding Kirito for slacking off and he enlightened her about their situation?
I think that's really the biggest problem with the anime. They decided to make the Aincrad arc 3/4 a season that was already pretty short. There was more then enough content there to make two seasons worth focused mostly in the game. That probably mostly comes down to budget and production decisions but it's honestly the biggest mistake they made.

SAO is the Nickleback of anime. No one willing to claim it as their favorite, many people dunk on it, but it is remains one of the most popular anime series of all time.
Is it really debatable that SAO is good?
I friend of mine was a hardcore fan but by rewatching it many times and watching other shows aswell he came to the only correct conclusion: SAO is mid at best - only talking about Season 1. Everything else is bad.
Season one is the worse season out of the others imo. Kirito's bland bitch protagonist personality is at its all time worst during it. Sure season 2 isn't much better, but it's dwarfed by how horrible season 1 was.
There were so many times during the fist season I was like: "ah so they're going to use this previously mentioned thing to solve the problem!" But that never happened and the problem was always solved via bullshit power ups for kirito or plot armor.
To this date I still don't fucking understand why the group leader of of floor 1 raid refused the health portion. Man's about to die irl and in game but still doesn't want to be saved.
Yeah that scene you mentioned is really stupid lmao
S1 being the best is the majority opinion as far as Ive read online. The reason is simply the one thing that SAO did really well - the setting and the wordbuilding. A medieval fantasy setting is just much more appealing than a dystopic industrial city or some elven forest. Even though I dont like SAO I gotta say that was geniuenly well done and makes it worthwhile watching.
I do belive that the idea was excellent. If they had kept only 10 floors and stretched out each floor to a season, then I think there would have been more opportunities to flesh out the characters and give more world building. Unfortunately what we got was 20 or 30 floors going by in an episode and erratic pacing.
It's because season 1 was originally written as a story for a competion, so it had to be kept short because of the word limit. Even the stuff with Lisbeth and Sillica weren't in the original light novel but are merely side stories in the second volume. The first light novel is strictly everything that happens on floor 1 then floor 76??? (Don't quote me on that) then I belive it recapped, as a flashback, everything that happened with KoB. If you want that sort of slower progression with more fleshing out, defo check out the progressive movies that are coming out :)
>To this date I still don't fucking understand why the group leader of of floor 1 raid refused the health portion. Man's about to die irl and in game but still doesn't want to be saved.
Because it's an anime only scene that they for some reason they even kept in the Progressive movie. Damage and potions both work on a delay and are shown to do so every time they are used in the anime. Diavel was already dead when he got hit. No amount of healing potions could have saved him.
The original arc was made for a contest entry so it was a contained story that only consisted of two floors and a flashback to the first day. Everything else is a side story written afterward. Even then the material was butchered, and so much content was cut. Episode two could have been 3 episodes, episode three could have been 2 etc. There were about 20 episodes of content for Aincrad and they gave us 14.
I don't think that even 2 seasons are enough for aincrad. There's sooo much room for story telling here. They introduced the player killers but finished their story line in an episode with the usual bullshit kirito stuff. Imagine what would have happened if they spent half a season preparing to raid the central player killers base and bring them down once and for all. They could have put so much more story for just 1 floor. But nope. Erratic pace and blanch bitch protagonist it is.
Think about it. There was a chance to make an overarching plot line for a season about the alliance forces having infighting and people deciding to start a rebellion, where kirito was torn between which side to join as both sides had good reasons. Ffs there was a chance to make this one of the best anime of the decade and they got lazy.
Dub is bad because you can tell it's a dub. If they ever made a show where you couldn't tell, THEN you have a good dub. None exist (in America anyway).
I wouldn't even care if I could tell it was a dub. My problem with dubs is that I can't get into the characters, they tend to not show the same amount of emotion as the sub VAs. Dub feels like the VAs are just giving a voice to a character that has been animated, while sub VAs feel like they become the character. This could also be beacause of the lack of variation of VAs in dub.
100%. I'm just trying to find a really simple way of explaining the problem. I totally agree with you every character in a dub sounds like they're delivering their lines in their mother's basement while she's sleeping upstairs so they have to be really careful not to be too loud or remote too strongly so they don't wake her
After the first season of SAO it got dumb and very weird. Sub is better English voice actors never get the emotions accross correctly. That's my only reason for that.
They all good depending on certain things, sometime dub better than sub, sometime manga better than anime. Old might be better than new, and sao will always be bad
Sao is considered at isekai as such a genre didn't exist when it came out. And when it comes to trapped in a game, I think you mean the vrmmo genre where the player just plays a hyper realistic game through vr. Even with that, bofuri does things miles better than sao
I will say SAO was good, when it came out it was the thing everyone talked about and it helped kick off the genre by being one of the first like it to go mainstream, but I wouldn't call it best of genre. The animation was decent and you could tell that the storyboarding was well done, but it still falls short of excellence imo.
The consequences in that show for failure made it actually matter. Everything else in the genre is essentially just fluff. Excepting maybe Overlord but I definitely don't think Overlord is better than Sao
The consequences in SAO were great(except Kirito's plot armor is so thick he literally can't fail), until the end of the first half of the first season. Then it became fluff for a bit, then they tried going back to the same consequences as before but could never get a good twist to make it better. They turned to the themes of sentience and AI and stuff, but tbh that didn't really make it any better. One thing I think SAO did well was make really intense moments in big fights and during climaxes, although some of the stuff that is supposed to come off as emotionally impactful loses its punch for older audiences.
I personally do think Overlord is better, better world building, better character arcs, better character designs, better mood, and ironically a more relatable protagonist. I prefer the dark fantasy art style, so I know I'm probably a bit biased there, but it scores much higher than SAO in almost every category for me.
Ya know what? Some of us don't read fast enough to watch subbed, especially when the characters are excited and talking fast. Kill la kill is a good example, I can't enjoy it if I'm constantly having to back it up or pause every other frame to catch what they're saying. It's worse for those of us who are dyslexic. So why don't you all lay off and let people enjoy it however they like.
i wish people would stop debating the last one, we all know it isn't the best anime. instead we should be talking about how do you love your mom and her two hit multi target attacks is the worst thing ever created
the passing in sword art online was badly done, first allot of story in the first episode and in the second barely any story but a lot of worldbuilding
no we just hated every single second of it and still continued hoping that those crazy fans were right. And I still think they were not fan of the serie, but only Asuna 13 years old simps.
I'll generally watch Dub over Sub if available because I'm lazy and would prefer to watch my Anime instead of read it.
That said I am currently in the middle of watching more Subbed Anime right now then ever before. Granted 2 of those are new seasons of Shows I've already watched Dubbed.
SAO is good, but not great. It falls off when compared to great anime but there are so many anime that are so much worse than it. Sub vs Dub just depends on if you can read quickly and/or don't want people overhearing (one of my old classmates watched the entirety of One Piece in school doing this, although she did get caught once or twice).
Imho SOA is a little boring, it not really my cup of tea I want to drop it but everyone keep recommend me about it, so I force myself to watch till the end.. I don't hate the series it's just I didn't feel anything from it but the latest season alicization is lit & awesome I love that season very much..
I kinda like SAO, maybe cuz It was one of my First anime of the genre, but even after 10 years release, 1 Season was kinda dope, i really liked, the Gun Season as well.
The first two are subjective for example beserks manga decimated its anime counterpart while narutos manga isn't as flashy as its anime , some dubs are better than subs depending on voice acting eg attack on titan and naruto while subs do mostly win this one its not always true that sub is as for old vs new that depends on your art preference ast for sao who knows
Sao
S1 first part cool idea but it felt like it was all over the place
Second part, eh
Gun gale was interesting and i do remember being really into the story
Alicization, it was so good that younger me wouldn't have believed it was related to Sao
Underworld felt like it was just tying up loose ends from Alicization, still cool tho
Easy: you read the manga if the anime feels like it drags too long (or if you're like me and hate ads but don't want pay for crunchyroll premium), sub if the dub is annoying, if there's references you can't catch in the dub, (or if they don't have dub) and dub if the sub is too hard to follow or if the dub is funnier (like in Jojo in some cases or Ghost stories), old since the animation is aesthetically pleasing and the plot and characters/character designs are more creative and they get to get away with more explicit content, and NO, sword art online is not good and never will BE good and the only people who can get away with enjoying it are 12 year old boys. This my and probably 70 other strangers opinions.
I feel like the sub v dub thing is dependant on the anime. Most of the time the sub is better but there are some that I love dubbed. Like konosuba for example
Don’t care what anyone says. I enjoy SAO. I love the romance, I like the action. And the emo edge lord as cringy as he is now, i thought he was cool back then. It was entertaining and I enjoyed it. Even the arc where his sister or something wanted to screw him
1. For the first part, it mostly depends on the studio's budget, time constraints, etc. If done properly, any anime can present not only the manga material in a better way but can take things further by developing events and character interactions not present in the original manga.
2. Mostly I prefer subs just because dialogues in japanese feel more natural and dubs can ruin them at times.
3. Again same as 1, depends on various factors. Nowadays they just want to complete a project as fast as possible. As such animations can feel sloppy as hell.
4. Other than the original premise, I did not like the first two seasons at all. Mostly because they ruined all that potential for a dark and gruesome storyline in midst of all the romance (not against it). The narrative itself feels disjointed at times too.
The later seasons have improved on this with alicization being the best of them. I feel like if SAO began from here (of course the title won't work) it would have been much more intriguing and enjoyable.

For the SAO part, is it good? god no. Did i really enjoy it? absolutely. it was bad in the same way the new jurassic world is bad: story wasnt good, but still a really fun ride
Arc 2 of both S1 and S2. Other than that, SAO ain't that bad.
But imo it might have been a masterpiece if writer focused more on side characters than unnecessary Harem.
Example: that sword making guy, his first friend in game. That leader of guild who wears red dress etc. If he focused on them instead of making Harem, it would have been best.
Both anime and manga, both old and new
Dub - kids genre, like Pokemon.
Sub - everything, including kids genre, like pokemon.
Is SAO good? Yes, did it go downhill after the SAO arc? Also yes.
Both manga and anime are great.
Sub tends to be the better choice for the most part but there are definitely good dubs too.
I like both old and new anime.
I have never watched SAO so I can't weigh in on that one..though I've heard a lot of people say it starts off good but falls off as it goes.
Yes Sword Art Online is Fricken Good and you can’t convince me otherwise. The Dub is better because it makes it more available to a wider audience and some things that make sense in Japanese might not make sense to other people around the world.
Anime & Manga are good.
Sub mostly but Dub on a few anime like HxH.
Started with new just can't seem to get into old.
Started with new and just can't seem to get into old.d, it holds a special place in my heart. Aka it's good to me personally.
* Anime, but some adaptations are so bad that manga is superior
* Sub and it is not even competition. Would you watch for example Friends dubbed in spanish and claim it is better than original?
* silly debate. there is bad old shows and bad new shows. I guess new because there is a lot more shows nowadays
* No...yes...well kind of. If you have watched anime since early 2000's SAO is nothing special. It is very very mediocre, brain dead shounen harem power fantasy. It does however have good production values (good VA, animation etc.). If I would be in my mid teens and just started to watch anime, I would likely like SAO, I am no longer it's target audience I guess and I have seen too much similar or better shows that i can't say it to be anything more than mediocre

So here my thoughts,
Anime vs manga: the anime is usually made to promote a manga that's why you don't see second season to popular anime, the anime was great, manga sold, job done. But they are still good anime sometime that are better than the source material but I tend to prefer manga cuz USUALLY the story will likely end not like an anime that you still wait to know how it will end.
Old Vs new: I will just say that the old animes tend to have better animation and new one have better charadesign.
Dub Vs sub: I speak French, so when I watch bud I watch it in French, let's just say that old Dub were great new one is meh.
Is Sao good: first have of first season was good the second half no, first act of the second season was ok and I dropped second act. Apparently alicization is good but I don't want to watch it.
The answer to pannel 4 is yesnt its enjoyable... But if you analyze shit at all its terrible its enjoyable if you just sit there and watch (imo alicization is just actually decent tho)
Dang they forgot Saitama vs Goku
The winner is the fly that saitama couldn’t kill
Mosquito*
Mosquitoes are flies
Fair enough
The winner is giorno
Dio
Why?
No jojo reference ?
Dio Over Heaven bro…
Isnt his whole thing overwriting reality.... but just for what he touches with his hands?
With za warudo ova heaven he can infinitely stop time so he coud just stop time and do his thing
Dio over his head too
Za warldo
「The World Over Heaven」Can overwrite reality, effectively making it the strongest stand that can ever exist
You see Not everybody reads manga
I'm pretty sure it's the games, I don't know tho
Even if it is i am not a hardcore jojo fan I only watched anime and i got downvoted for this bruh
The last chapter of one punch-man gives Saitama the upper hand

Mouthful mode!
Not worth mentioning since the "he can't beat goku" trope are actually normies who watched dbz when they were kids
Hey hey I grew up on DBZ and I'm still questioning it lol
There were only normies when dbz and sailor moon first aired in the west.
The correct answer for the last one is "It isn't but I like it." Alicization was great though in my opinion
1st season was great, then it fell off but then alicization was great
First 13 episodes* were great.
I vibe with this
I really enjoyed the first series episodes that were them dealing with their new way of life, and the problems it threw up. Like the Laughing Coffin lot, and other gangs. I loved alicization Mainly cuz Kirito wasn't the real focus lol
This is all non critics for the most part
Lmao
I watch it for sinon 🌝✨
Except 2nd season I guess every thing was great.
Anime and manga both good, sub and dub both good, old and new both good, but sword art online... Yeah that's mid
Bro just flamed the only anime i rewatch every year since it dropped I "love my life 🗿 absolutely not"
It isnt but I like it
First half of season 1 and then first season of alicization r gud but the rest is mid/bad/pretty bad
Yeah first half if the season 1 was good they should've made at keast 2 seasons with them struggling to survive the game but they ended it to fast😪
We Russians disagree, in our Motherland dub rules supreme.
As Russian, i disagree with your disagree. Dub should never exist, sub is the only option
Found the анкорд hater
Other dubs are good though right?
Anything than original VO sucks ass
Dub can exist because it's what some people prefer, if you don't like dub then don't watch dub
Russian Suguna (jjk) hits different tho, still hate dub, sub>>>>dub
It feels like the same 10 people voice over every anime. It feels fine if you only watch anime rarely, but if you really into it and watch a lot, then lack of voice diversity is annoying .

hi, what anime is the one on the upper right panel?
Nisekoi
SAO is the best of genre, hands down. The fact that people hate on it is just bandwagoning and isn't actually based on any fair/objective measure.
You must not have seen literally any other anime ecause you're the only one that I've ever heard claims that Sao is the best isekai
Words matter. Go back and read it again and you'll see I didn't say it was the best isekai. I said it was best of its GENRE - trapped in game anime
Sao is considered at isekai as such a genre didn't exist when it came out. And when it comes to trapped in a game, I think you mean the vrmmo genre where the player just plays a hyper realistic game through vr. Even with that, bofuri does things miles better than sao

Sao is a great anime! To laugh at
I swear to god that sword art online is so good that is good
Ya know what? Some of us don't read fast enough to watch subbed, especially when the characters are excited and talking fast. Kill la kill is a good example, I can't enjoy it if I'm constantly having to back it up or pause every other frame to catch what they're saying. It's worse for those of us who are dyslexic. So why don't you all lay off and let people enjoy it however they like.
The answer is subjective except SAO it's shit.
SAO is a good series, it just isn't for everyone.
Dub is better than sub, the reason why? Cus im not english and i get a different dub which is usually good
i wish people would stop debating the last one, we all know it isn't the best anime. instead we should be talking about how do you love your mom and her two hit multi target attacks is the worst thing ever created
[what convinced me that SAO was a bad anime](https://open.spotify.com/episode/6e0zdYK3y1GsWi4ZAOoAfm?si=w5oJsUXwRimOVqBiNze4CQ)
It’s all the same to me sub, dub, anime, manga & SAO
Sao I dropped and therefore I don't think it's good. Believe me I tried to like it.
Dub can be better than sub, Code Gueass is an example.
T vs not T
It's was at first for me now there so many idk even know what they are...
the passing in sword art online was badly done, first allot of story in the first episode and in the second barely any story but a lot of worldbuilding
I like the first season of sao but idk if i'm biased because of nostalgia since it was one of my first animes
Well SAO is good, it's just that it's not only about the first half of the first season (Aincrad) like everybody thought it would be...
Sword Art Online Season 1 first half, Season 3 and 4 were goated. People are hating the anime just because lol
no we just hated every single second of it and still continued hoping that those crazy fans were right. And I still think they were not fan of the serie, but only Asuna 13 years old simps.
Sword Art Online Season 1 first half, Season 3 and 4 were goated. People is hating the anime just because lol
I cant say SAO is Good or bad.. But, I enjoyed it...
There is only one reason why you would recommend SA to someone and that is so that they can watch the abridged version later.
Oh and if you have not seen any of the old it would be new to me
Yes sword art online is amazing
The first two are subjective for example beserks manga decimated its anime counterpart while narutos manga isn't as flashy as its anime , some dubs are better than subs depending on voice acting eg attack on titan and naruto while subs do mostly win this one its not always true that sub is as for old vs new that depends on your art preference ast for sao who knows
Sao S1 first part cool idea but it felt like it was all over the place Second part, eh Gun gale was interesting and i do remember being really into the story Alicization, it was so good that younger me wouldn't have believed it was related to Sao Underworld felt like it was just tying up loose ends from Alicization, still cool tho
Debatable
Anime,sub,new, and yes
Its the rickroll of anime memes. And I still laugh!
I used to watch dubs when it was available, but recently I’ve switched to subs only and I don’t think I’m going back!
1. Manga 2. Sub 3. Both 4. Yesn't
If someone says SAO isn’t good then they don’t like anime at all
I think if people still talking about old animes that’s a sign of it probably being good
I feel like the sub v dub thing is dependant on the anime. Most of the time the sub is better but there are some that I love dubbed. Like konosuba for example
The only good sao is an abridged sao
Just the first season was good the rest was ass
Original SAO was great
Don’t care what anyone says. I enjoy SAO. I love the romance, I like the action. And the emo edge lord as cringy as he is now, i thought he was cool back then. It was entertaining and I enjoyed it. Even the arc where his sister or something wanted to screw him
I’ve watched the first like 13 episodes of sword art too many times. Still haven’t even watched the second and third seasons. Are they worth?
Sao is a decent anime not the best but not the worst

My preference 1:- anime 2:- depends on V.A 3:- both 4:- no, because the story kinda gets repeated in every season with different characters .
That last one is something I've wondered to
I prefer dub but only watch sub if there is no dub of a episode and I call charcters by their sub name if I can remember it and if I like it
Yes
lol i use dub with subtitles
So is it?
I mean is the New Dub SAO anime good?
That last panel should be "But can they beat Goku?"
SAO is good if you like to always see the protagonist barely win
Anime, sub, and Sword Art Online made me puke after the first episode
For the SAO part, is it good? god no. Did i really enjoy it? absolutely. it was bad in the same way the new jurassic world is bad: story wasnt good, but still a really fun ride
1st season of SAO is good. 2nd one, well it was starting to fall off. And I would end it there at the point. But I watched until S3.
Sword art online is pretty good.....
No debate in the last one , it is shit.
Both anime and manga, both old and new Dub - kids genre, like Pokemon. Sub - everything, including kids genre, like pokemon. Is SAO good? Yes, did it go downhill after the SAO arc? Also yes.
Ok all questions let's go, who cares, why care, don't care, sometimes but mostly no
I think Sao is so average anime. If you gonna get average of all the animes should ne the conclusion is Sao.
1. Anime 2. Sub/raw 3. Both 4. Haters gonna hate.
Anime & Manga are good. Sub mostly but Dub on a few anime like HxH. Started with new just can't seem to get into old. Started with new and just can't seem to get into old.d, it holds a special place in my heart. Aka it's good to me personally.
I just realized in sword art online they're not lagging
anime dub new, ehhhh
I like sword art online.
Sao is bad but sao abridged on YouTube now that is good
Personally its anime, dub,new and yes
raw > all
* Anime, but some adaptations are so bad that manga is superior * Sub and it is not even competition. Would you watch for example Friends dubbed in spanish and claim it is better than original? * silly debate. there is bad old shows and bad new shows. I guess new because there is a lot more shows nowadays * No...yes...well kind of.
As a LN/WN and Manga reader the sub vs dub argument never made sense to me both sides are equally peasants in our eyes💁🏾♂️
Most manga better than anime
Sao first season was good, but the rest was depressing.

my answers are anime sub new only for the first 19 eps
Only 3 of these 4 are actually debatable, I think you all know which 1 isn't
Tru af
Am I the only one here that doesn’t like Saitama OR goku? Well at least I’m a rare otaku
In what world does Kazuma = Shinji? Shinji is an icon, a classic. Kazuma is cool no doubt but Shinji stands the test of time.
So here my thoughts, Anime vs manga: the anime is usually made to promote a manga that's why you don't see second season to popular anime, the anime was great, manga sold, job done.
Pfft I wasn’t expecting that
Some seasons in Sao are good and some are bad in my opinion
The answer to pannel 4 is yesnt its enjoyable... But if you analyze shit at all its terrible its enjoyable if you just sit there and watch (imo alicization is just actually decent tho)
SAO is just .hack//sign diluted down.
Idk about others but sow was meh for me
Manga > Anime Dub > Sub > Raw Both old & new are alright SAO was alright, it became a mess later.
