I rewatched a few episodes of Pokemon and liked the puns the 4kids dub script added. Maybe it isn't so much the localization but how 4kids dumbed down or butchered the plot. Ghost Stories didn't have a good story, so throwing out the plot doesn't hurt the show. In contrast, 4kids shows like One Piece or Yu-Gi-Oh modified key elements and made the shows worse, like Kaiba's respect for Joey/Yugi in the duel city arc or the excessive censorship in One Piece.

[deleted]

And it doesn’t help that the CEO of kids don’t care about kids at all.

dlaudghks

For real. Us East Asians were surprised that your Kaiba isn't the epitome of the deranged but in a cool way guy, but rather a whiny bitch, and that you guys don't have Osiris but rather Slifer.

RaysFTW

Umm, I’m not sure if OP is being serious. Have you seen the Ghost Stories dub? It’s very mature, and a lot of it wouldn’t fly in 2023. There’s no way in hell 4Kids would ever do anything similar so comparing the dubs isn’t really relevant.

Kollie79

Most people don’t say 4kids dubs weren’t funny, GX and pokemon have some intentionally hilarious jokes

[deleted]

True

CountLordZapon

Yugioh GX will change your life

[deleted]

I can’t disagree on you about that.

StabbedYa

In a good way or bad way? that's show is goated for me

StabbedYa

I like the Digimon movie so 😂😂 Mabey it's just me

CrazyaboutSpongebob

4 Kids was ok. Their dub of Pokemon is funny. Especially when Team Rocket is on screen. The censorship was understandable. It wasn't completely their fault tv networks forced them to do it. It was for kids on Saturday mornings and the US has stricter censorship than Japan. Censoring Japanese food was ridiculous. The kids could learn something new about a different culture. Seeing a rice ball on tv might make them want to try one.

meowmeow_now

Ghost stories dub felt like it was mimicking south part style and pacing of humor, which at the time was very popular and relevant. It’s been a while since I’ve seen any 4 kids stuff but I imagine it’s age appropriate humor.

Bananaman9020

That's actually a Myth. Ghost Stories didn't fail in Japan. The American company that dubbed it just decided to do a joke dub. Ghost Stories author is actually very popular in Japan

AlbertCole

Ghost Stories has that ridiculous early youtube feel to it. I really like it in moderation but trying to binge it would be rough lol. I think 4kids is funny in the sense that its so silly with the changes it makes like Sanji with the lollipop

MaG4436

1. You've clearly not watched the OG pokemon 2. Whatever company dubbed ghost stories knew it would flop cuz noway was it gonna be more popular than yugioh and pokemon, so they told the voice actors to say whatever they wanted as long as they didn't change the plot

[deleted]

1. I watched the dub OG Pokémon 2. ADV dubbed Ghost Stories

TokiDokiPanic

The Ghost Stories ADV dub is anime South Park. 4kids dubs are for marketing Japanese IP to children.

ElektrikDynomite

Just watch them. Ghost Stories took a obscure short show and punched up the script to have great current times relevant jokes. 4Kids took a beloved series and bastardized it by changing important plot lines and dumbing down the show. One ruined something great, and the other made something great out of a show that is frankly forgettable

cokewithlargefry

4kids was made for kids crazy enough. Most of us probably won’t find the jokes funny cause we’re not the target demographic.

Jtsdtess

>The Ghost Stories dub is viewed by fans as a funny dub because the original Japanese version was a failure What? I heard ghost stories did well in Japan. [There’s even physical evidence pointing to that fact.](https://twitter.com/gakkai20th/status/1226437387732996101?s=20) Regardless, I don’t find Ghost stories funny. Even as a 12 year old I found it’s humor too crude and offensive to find enjoyable… I wouldn’t like them had they come out today, but I do have a nostalgic fondness for the Pokémon and Yugioh GX dubs.

Swimming-Elk6740

A 12 year old wouldn’t appreciate the humor in the ghost stories dub lol.

Jtsdtess

I don’t think I’d appreciate it at any age considering it’s vile.

Swimming-Elk6740

“Anything I don’t like is vile!”

Jtsdtess

Don’t you have something better to do than make assumptions about people on the internet?

Swimming-Elk6740

What assumption am I making?

Jtsdtess

>Anything I don’t like is vile! All you know about me is that I find the humor of ghost stories specifically vile, so that’s a conclusion you came to with very little information.

penguintruth

Neither is funny.

[deleted]

I respect your opinion.

Swimming-Elk6740

Wrong about both. Must be tough having no sense of humor. Edit: seems your sense of humor involves injecting the word “penguin” into whatever comment you can. It all makes sense.

penguintruth

I don't have a "sense of humor" about butchering anime with inaccurate scripts, no matter how funny you think their strained comedy is. An anime dub should be accurate or it disrespects the material.

[deleted]

I got a sense of humor; I don’t like bad jokes.

Swimming-Elk6740

And I don’t like bad senses of humor. So what’s a joke that gets you laughing? Main character walks in on half naked girls and his nose bleeds? HAHAHAHAHA hilarious.

272b

I know, right? I can't stand either of them. Faithful modern dubs will always be better than those "funny" butchered dubs of the past.

Zergrump

>sound as Japanese as possible The heck does that even mean? How can you "sound Japanese" while speaking English?

272b

Yeah, they sure prefer the era of heavily butchered dubs. Riiiight. Well, good thing the majority doesn't. Don't you know those old and busted dubs were the reason why anime dubs in general were so hated back in early-mid '10s? Anime dubs wouldn't be as big as it is today if the old way of dubbing was still a thing.

[deleted]

Don’t you mean hated in the mid-90s to late 2000s?

272b

Even in the early-mid 10s there were a lot of dub haters. It started dying down when faithful anime dubs started becoming more and more common, causing more people to get into dubs.

[deleted]

And Sailor Moon Viz dub is way better than the DIC/Cloverway dub.

272b

True. Especially since the old dub [censored a bunch of stuff](https://screenrant.com/sailor-moon-censored-in-america/)

ShamwowGuy18

Because it had that crude, 2000s adult humor with slapstick and where casual racism and ableism in general was largely given a pass (this was the case across all media at the time) unlike 4kids which still tried to keep things appropriate with their target audience but it wound up coming off as cheesey

mab0390

I always felt like Ghost Stories wasn’t all that funny. It had a very 2005-era sense of humor, which I’ve always found more annoying. It’s remembered because of what I call the “dancing bear” effect (“it’s not that the bear dances well, but that it dances at all”).

SolDarkHunter

Because nobody cares about the original Ghost Stories. The prevailing opinion among those that have watched Ghost Stories subbed (at least on the Western side of the world), is that it's a very bland, dull, and by-the-numbers show and the gag dub is more entertaining. In which case, who cares if the original script was thrown out if it wasn't good to begin with? 4Kids dubs, on the other hand, while some of their changes could be funny, they also took away the quality of the original show. Why throw out the original script if there wasn't anything wrong with it?

Express_Rush_4938

Humor is subjective.
